I would really like to see more black animated series centered around girlhood/womanhood
P.S. someone needs to cast me for a main voice role. 🤧
You would be a good narrator.
You have a great speaking voice!
YES! DEFINITELY!
I like Black🖤cartoons 90s😎 & 2000s 😎💖🌟💪🏾💖✨
You should know that the P.J.'s came out in 1999 not 1992.
I surely remember the Class Of 3000, The PJ’s, Black Dynamite, and Hey Monie. Fun Fact: This show (Class Of 3000) was created by the EP who created the Romeo show. I may be 22, but I surely remember watching these shows.
Yup I’m 22 also and class of 3000 was my shit lol
Same I'm 23
To Ed
Class of 3000 was my shit too! Used to play the game on cartoon network too!
45 and never seen the shit
Cree summer was the cartoon goat. ANYTIME they had a black female character In a cartoon it was always Cree❤ I remember all of these shows. My favorites was waynehead and the PJs
Cree was Number 5 Girl on Code Name Kids Next Door.
@@jabril4real637 And Susie Carmichael on Rugrats 😊
Cree is the queen of black cartoon voice acting
She was also the voice of Penny on Inspector Gadget
I was about to say the saaame thing. That woman be workin’
I know this is more of a well known black cartoon, but Static Shock definitely held a spot in my heart. They had a couple of episodes touching on topics like racism, school violence, etc. Although my man Virgil was just a teen, the responsibility of being a hero and role model at the same time made me look up to him as a kid. Not to mention, the theme song the best song in Lil Romeo’s career 💀
Yes, static shock was my show
*Still is my favorite show & what about ICDC ? that's a classic lol*
I didn't know Static Shock wasn't well known! I loved that show!
@@ClaireHaire ICDC? never heard of it, based off the acronym
I feel like the show wasn’t talked about enough almost as if it was forgotten. You most definitely unlocked a memory and I didn’t know Lil Romeo sang that song😂
I love that you bring these cultural gems back to life. I haven’t seen these shows since my childhood 💜
Agreed
EDDIE MURPHY WAS AT LEGEND STATUS AND OUT OF NOWHERE HE CAME WITH PJS IN THE PROJECTS. I ALWAYS THOUGHT THAT THAT WAS SO COOL
I will never get over Class of 3000 being cancelled. One of the best shows ever from my childhood.
The hurt I felt🙈😭
And the music was lit 🔥.
I never saw that cartoon
The theme song still hasn't left my head.
It came on cartoon network
Boondocks and Black Dynamite are classics! I hadn't heard of some of these shows. Great presentation!
She didn’t mention the boondocks because it’s not really a forgotten show. It’s still talked about.
Those were great shows. How many people do you see in real life that are represented on the Boondocks?
@@dmp04 Huey was a realistic intellectual, critiques adults, society, political figures - Aaron McGruder in cartoon form. Corporate media doesn't know how to handle this.
Jasmine was probably the closest thing to a real person, voiced by an actual pre-teen/teen girl.
@@melreslor2114 I agree. They would prefer to see him shucking and jiving.
@@melreslor2114 Lol, I'd say Jasmine's father Tom was a pretty accurate representation of some peole I've met as well.
The Class of 3000 is so underrated. I never hear people talking about it and I’m glad you brought it up. 🔥
I haven’t forgotten about the show at all. I still talk about it.
i used to love that show!! whenever i talk about it to my friends they have no idea what i’m talking about 😭
It was a nice thought, but i couldnt get that into it. There was so many other amazing shows that were way better that was on that it didnt stand a chance.
Black Dynamite was hilarious, and criminally under appreciated. That show should have went another two seasons. The show was funnier than the movie.
Yeah I haven't seen a black cartoon show that funny since the first two seasons of The boondocks.
Thats one of my husband's favorite shows and he's always quoting it!
Exactly
Since it was cancelled without giving us an explanation, I guess when it came time to do budget cuts so they could fill the execs' pockets more, they decided to axe the "expendable" black show. SMH
My favorite episode is the one of Michael Jackson
I will never forget how hyped up me and my brother were when Class of 3000 first aired back in 2006. 7 year old me was LIT TF UP! I loved the lessons that the show taught, and I loved how diverse the characters were. I was saddened that the show got cancelled because it was ahead of its time.
It's so incredibly sad HOW!!! Andre's ventures never were appreciated for how genius they all were. His fashion line was absolutely stunning and ahead of its time , and his cartoon was great! And it's should have lasted
I remember “Happily Ever After” it was popular fairy tales redone by black cast and black animation.
And other cultures as well. I currently let my students watch it during their break. All the episodes are on HBO Max.
Yeah, the brother Bruce W. Smith did that series along with Bebe's Kids & The Proud Family.
yesss i loved watching that on hbo
I loved that cartoon
Yes! It is the only version of fairy tales that I allow my kids to watch. Just a few weeks ago, my 10 yr old daughter asked me why haven't we watched any of the Disney princess movies (expect Princess & the Frog)
Hey Monie is funny and relatable. I miss that show. I also liked how Bet used a cartoon character (cita) to host music videos countdown😄
Ms. Cita! lol
@@KidaDynamite22 yeah her. Close enough 🤣🤣🤣
@@brebre23461 😂🤣
I remember Cita, flashback.
Ms. Cita was my girl!
I grew up getting up early on Saturday mornings to watch cartoons like The Harlem Globetrotters and Jackson Five…they were so dynamic and entertaining for their time, in the seventies, and to us they were crazy entertaining. The voices, stories, visuals and possibilities were so exciting for our boring kid lives, before the internet when there were only 3 or 4 channels on TV.
Black representation in cartoons is and was so important and the positive was really positive…thanks for the great reminders of the nineties stuff, Bebe’s Kids is still a cultural moment. Love your channel. 👑♥️
Miss Best Week Ever!
The fact that I watch 95% of these shows as a kid 🤦🏾♀️ I am getting old lol Thank you for reminding of my childhood.
I remember the "PJ's," "Kid n' Play," "Hammerman," and "Hey Monie"! When I was a child, I made it my mission to watch "Kid n' Play" and "Hammerman" every Saturday morning! I was heartbroken when they took those cartoons off air! 😢
There's another little known black animated series you left off. It's called "Sistas n' the City," and the series was made up of 10 minute shorts about a group of best friends trying to navigate through their relationships and careers. The show wasn't for children, and it aired on Showtime after "Soul Food: The Series" circa 2003-2004.
Hey Monie is funny AF! It would thrive if it were released today.
I remember every single one of these! And talk about how black cartoons never got the respect they deserved! Most of them only having 1 season
It's crazy that these shows(except for the Friday animated series) have good reviews, but are always canceled for budgetary and/or rating reasons simply because it's a black series. Hopefully, things will improve in the television landscape in the age of streaming and in light of everything that happened with black lives. On another note, I would love a list similar to this but with the black coming of age movies where it's not about black trauma or struggle.
That part! I'm over the trauma/struggle trope show us fabulous & thriving more in media!!
"simply because it's a black series"
No need to lie. These shows regardless of reviews, just didn't catch a big enough audience and probably not with the times. That's with any show regardless of race. A lot of shows get cancelled, but the most important part is that they existed.
boondocks sucked ass.
Idk if it was simply because they were black tv shows. At the end of the day these networks follow the money regardless of race. Static Shock was super popular because it had a wider audience of people it reached and viewers that watched it at consistently high numbers. Then there are shows that are good but last a second because not as many people watch it. Another example is Bebé’s kids. Idk too many black people and ESPECIALLY white people that have seen that show, let alone resonate with those characters. I was say that race does play a part to a certain extent though. Like, not a lot of white people (who are a majority of American population) are going to watch some of the other black animated shows. Standout shows that do have a white audience do a better job of telling a story that reaches out to the black audience but keeps the white audience locked in as well with the same stories. In those cases, like black dynamite, it’s hard to see why those shows are cancelled.
I grew up on70’s Ali, Fat Albert , Jackson 5, and Harelm Global Trotter, other show in the 80 ’s, 90’s,00’s and these shows had messages for kids which isn’t seen in this day and time.
Yes! They were great shows, nothing like that now.
Exactly 👏🏼👏🏼👍🏼
After hammer man and house party I don't remember any of those cartoons...was born in 1980
Remember Rickety Rocket or The Gary Coleman show?
Wow! I remember a majority of these shows growing up as an imaginative African American growing up. I am still inspired by all of these black cartoons to create ideas where African American culture and influence is ever present! (I'll keep this channel in mind for voice actors!)
I hope to find more people who remember the cartoon Carduroy. Wich was about a jamaican-american girl and her talking bear plush
Yes
I remember it. Used to come on the family channel (canadian version of disney channel). I found it boring, but now that im older looking back, it must have felt good for Jamaicans to see someone like themselves on screen.
I loved this one! It was also a book. I wanted the Teddy so bad as a kid 😩
I read the book and saw the animated movie in school!
I never knew the girl was Jamaican and thought the bear was more or the main character
THIS is why I subscribed!!!! Unique content!!! You go girl!!!! 😂 - Martin
Thank you for mentioning Mike Tyson Mysteries! It's one of my all time favorite shows and barely anyone knows it when I reference it.
It’s the plugs for me 😂 period sis, self promotion! You do great videos and research. Could you think about doing one on black child sitcoms like Romeo, Just Jordan, and Cousin Skeeter? I miss shows like that.
Yess!!
Gullah Gullah Island, My Brother and Me, Me and The Boys
Hey monie was everything!! I wish I got to see more seasons.
I can't explain how much I genuinely enjoy your content. You always keep me on my toes cause no video is like the last (unless its a series) and it's always so well researched and fun, please please never stop making videos!!
Black dynamite Michael Jackson episode hands down had me in tears i loved the 1st season and also Black Sands is a black TH-cam animated series it needs support
I’m mad about the intro change again but I love the growth of this channel!!! Please Keep making these great videos❤️❤️❤️❤️
I definitely remember Class of 3000, Proud Family, Black Dynamite, Bebe's Kids, CJ & Jamal, Static Shock & The PJs.
today. Craig of the Creek is a fantastic show. even though it's not a black cartoon. Lazor Wulf had a good black cast. plus, The Jellies & Mike Tyson Mysteries.
[as] is basically still the only network/block that brings black cartoon on a regular basis.
Yeah, Lazor Wulf & The Jellies are really forgotten.
The hurt I felt when Class of 3000 ended😭 I'll never get over it. Waynehead was a favorite for me as well. Boondocks is a classic that I should've appreciated more.
The PJs was my ish! You can still catch it on tv every once in a while. Waynehead was also good, I love Damon’s crazy self lol. Also, Cree Summer is in almost every cartoon ever 🤣
Shes one of the goat voice actors
I luv'd "Waynehead"!! "The PJ's" is on Tubi for free now
I hadn't heard about the Friday series. I forgot about Hey Monie and the Kid n Play and Hammerman joints were tough to watch. Didn't realize Kid n Play had comics either. Thanks for this video.
It's great to know the opportunity for black animation is greater today than it was back during the time of these earlier efforts. I'm sad to hear Boondocks and Black Dynamite are done, I enjoyed those immensely
I am here for it. 💙 I wish there was more black cartoons when I was growing up.
Same here
You just sent me back into the time machine. I'm going to have rewatch this video, so I can write down all the shows and look them I know they are streaming somewhere. Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into this video.
You can watch The PJs on TH-cam
@@MsTeo91 Thanks
You’re welcome ☺️
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who remembers Black Dynamite, it seriously doesn’t get as much love as it deserves😭
I love The PJs, Static Shock, Class of 3000, Black Dynamite, and Mike Tyson Mysteries growing up!!! These shows had a special place in my heart! 😍
I need this! Your voice over any video is so soothing. I’m about to enjoy lol 😂
Great video! The amount of research and quality editing is really apparent. Thanks girl!
Thank you for showcasing this! I remember seeing most of the shows presented at some point in my life. I didn't care about the quality of said show or what the "ratings" said, I watched the shows because it was one of the very few times I could see the "black experience" portrayed in a way that felt authentic and diverse.
Wow I remember watching some of these amazing black shows growing up. Even tho I'm unfortunately not a 90s/80s kid nor black I still remember a lot of these shows distinctively and I absolutely loved them. These black cartoons/sitcoms are the epitome of childhood nostalgia and it's such a shame that many of them were short-lived. I really hope that in this new 2020 decade there will be a brand new renaissance of black TV shows for the next generations of black kids especially. Thank you so much for this Ms.Black Femininity TV and have a lovely day. ❤️
37 years old and I’ve watched all these cartoons.. who cares what a critic says these shows were pivotal to our childhood
Great vid I grew up watching all these cartoons through TV and home video, I just wanna mention Static Shock also being one of the more successful black animation shows along with Proud Family, and Boondocks. I would also love to see a full video about black animation movies like Bebe’s Kids and particularly Osmosis Jones because that is a black film that was made without making it too obvious. Because damn near every character in that film is black besides Drix , the mayor, and the live action characters plus Chris Rock, Brandy and, Laurence Fishburne made their characters so memorable.
Thank you for this. I always gravitated towards black cartoons, more over... AMERICAN cartoons because we are the most American people ever. We deserve to be represented. Without us, there is no America💯💯💯💯
Andre 3000 have always been ahead of time - from his clothing line to his show
We also loved the Mike Tyson Mystery show. It was literally hilarious 🤣🤣🤣 I mean the humor was dark, but it was excellent.
Its,still going actually 😊 they brought it back
The bird 🐦 is so awesomely terrible 😅
Thank u for doing this I’m planning to rewatch all of these i can find. And i agree u have an excellent voice over voice, would love to hear u on an animated character.
The premiere of Class of 3000 on November 3rd, 2006 was one of the most exciting nights of my childhood!!! I just knew the show was gonna be lit and it was and Chris Brown was there!!! Back then I was obsessed with him almost lmao and at the time I was obsessed with Cartoon Network in general so you put the two together and ayyyye!!!! I haven't seen nor heard anything about that night since it premiered all of those years ago. Black Femininity TV where on EARTH did you find that footage!???? Thank you for this video from the bottom of my heart!!!!
Still don't understand why the princess had to be a FROG?
Throughout the whole movie at that !!
it's Disney channel they have talking fishes and dogs so it wouldn't be a surprise if the princess was a frog she turned into a frog after she kissed the prince he also was a frog and I've noticed with Disney channel they have these characters go and become all types of things and go on an adventure and in the end they end up in love
In the original princess in the frog also from the 90s she was also a frog so they might've taken from that
They took away her melanin… just like they are erasing us from our own black history and black excellence
I really need to watch more Hey Monie, I watch a couple of episodes but stopped when BET stopped airing them. I watched all of the cartoons that you posted. Here are some forgotten ones that wasn't on the list:
1) Legends of Chamberlain Heights: 2 seasons, the majority was a black cast (even though some white guy voiced the fat black main one) & Carl Jones also produced this series as well. It just was ok...
2) Avengers Assemble: Black Panther's Quest-Secret Avenger: The last season was all about Black Panther........and it was great.
3) DC's Vixen (web series): I enjoy it alot but it was too short like 3 episodes or something.
4) Freaknik: The Musical: Another Carl Jones produced cartoon and I just love this silly movie.
A Cool Like That Christmas & The Night B4 Christmas: 2 Xmas specials that I barely remember....I think I watch them.
Ahh that all I can think of for now. Jamal The Funny Frog don't count since those were just a bunch of pilot episodes. Spawn & BET's Black Panther are still the GOATS.
I grew up watching Class of 3000 and now a decade and then some later, my son can’t get enough of that show and soundtrack 🔥❣️
Please don't mess with my childhood memories by revamping these beautiful classics and making them "Louder & PROUDER" 😤😂
Wait why is no one talking about Mike Tyson Mysteries? That series was hilarious! The sheer absurdity of the plot made all the short episodes so entertaining.
Really enjoyed this walk down Memory Ln. Great job on the back stories for each cartoon. You were absolutely right. There were a few that I have never heard of, much less seen. However, there were a few I wish you would have included. I would have liked to learn more about the them as well. A few I remember:
1). Rickety Rocket;
2). Mighty Man and his dog Yukk;
3). Super Stretch and Micro Woman ( part of the Tarzan and the Super 7 line up);
4). Super Globetrotters ( the second iteration to this basketball sensation);
5). Static Shock, ( my all time favorite);
6). Afro Samurai (wasn't a big fan of this one, so it's cool).
Keep up the GOOD WORK 👍🏼💯!!!
A lot of people forget that Martin Lawrence, Tommy Davidson, Cree Summer and Dawnn Lewis all did voices for "Kid n' Play."
Btw OUTKAST clothing line was nowhere near a failure! I noticed people from different generations have skewed perspectives! I can speak because I was there. OutKast clothing is now a vintage clothing line
I loved The Mr. T cartoon and Hammerman, The Proud Family and The Bomdocks. 💖
Thanks for doing this.💖💖💖💖💖
"Spartakus and the Sun Beneath the Sea" aired on Nickelodeon from 1985-1987 then in re-runs until 1991. Well-forgotten show with black protagonists.
Two other shows that I want to mention but you forgot was Fatherhood from Nick@Nite (2004-05) from the mind of Bill Cosby, and the Disney cartoon Filmore! (2002-04). That episode of Filmore when his girl played him and he broke up with her and flamed her for cooking him dry chicken lives in my head 😂
I loved Fatherhood cartoon.
Have you ever looked into The Blackstones? The cancelled Flintstones spin-off? Quite an interesting story there!
I use to watch hey Monie all the time lol it’s like every other year I think about it and find it
Thank you for this video. Your contributions are needed. Keep up the great work!
Excellent channel/content/commentary!
Don't forget Static Shock
Yes
Loved that cartoon
I was just about to post this.
I never knew of a lot of these cartoons and this was my era 😭
One of my favorite black cartoon characters was a married superhero couple named Stretchman and Microwoman, they where part of team called( Tarzan and the Super Seven ) by Filmation who animated Fat Albert and the original He-man.
So glad you mentioned them! Yes!
I love Class of 2000. Such an underrated masterpiece. Along with Disney's Jett Jackson.
10-14 years ago a lot of these cartoons mentioned were all on TH-cam I miss that era sooo much GAWD what good times
Loooong time ago (2013-2015) I used to work at a daycare. And let me tell y’all when I played the full album soundtrack to Class of 3000 for free playtime, we were ALL in my class getting to it! Great soundtrack with 0 skips
Cree Summer was also the voice of Elmira Fudd of the Anamaniacs!!
Being a 80s baby and a 90s kid, I watched all these shows. Great memories
1982 fa sho
Yep I was born in 84 remember a good amount of these shows
@Love Melanin adult in the 2000's 🥰. Oh man I’m a 2000s baby 🤣🤣
Saw the title and almost screamed lol great video idea!!
Someone really does need to cast you as a voice actress, because you're voice is so pretty and perfect for it! ♡
I literally click your video as soon as it hit I absolutely love love your voice it’s absolutely amazingly soothing
And Class of 3000 was a GREAT cartoon. That shit was funky and an excellent extension of the OutKast brand...I'm from Atlanta so I might be a bit biased, but that was a good cartoon💯💯💯
Bro i remember being so sad at 7 yrs old waiting for another season of Class of 3000…
i love that your content takes me back to my childhood. I forgot all about these shows!!!
What about Filmore? 😩I loved that show! A black kid solving mysteries.
You remember his partner Ingrid?
HUGE FAN OF HEY MONIE RIGHT HERE!!! Was there from jump at a young age man. I loved that it was like black Home Movies. I think Home Movies debuted after this tho.
Proud graduate of Class of 3000. Supported every week. Black Dynamite was awesome!!
Can we all just take the time to appreciate BLACK EXCELLENCE ❤🎉👏🏽🙌🏽✊🏾🖖🏾 we rap dance sing produce act and etc….
The fact that used say something as background music made me so happy
I forgot all about C Bear and Jamal. So basically the movie Ted with Mark Wahlberg in it came from C Bear and Jamal
I love your channel, and am so shocked that you didn't give any shine to Doc mcstuffins!😂
I didn't forget about any of these, but growing up I only watched Class of 3000 and The PJs. C-Bear and Jamal was cute and should've lasted longer, and I wish I could've got to see Waynehead
even tho I didn't watch Hey Monie, I think BET should make some more animated shows
When I think about most cartoons from my childhood.... I always hear Cree Summers voice!! 🥰
PJ's and Black Dynamite are my absolute favorites 😍
I love the aesthetic of your channel. Your documentary style videos you’re just soooo dope!
Class of 3000 was IT! I loved watching it as a kid.
Same
This was an awesome trip down memory lane as well as what is to come. As an executive producer of our own animated shows, this was both entertaining and thought provoking. I hope that black animated shows continue to develop and eventually get their well deserved shine. I personally plan to continue to keep the torch lit. #BayworldUnlimited
Not forgotten. Just main networks pulled them and we didnt have our thing anymore. Last shows when i was a kid to play before it was a downfall was raven and the proud family. But a 90 baby here i loved all these. Good job on video
This was a GREAT walk down memory lane. Thanks loved one. JP
This is so crazy! My boyfriend just brought up Class of 3000 earlier today and then boom you have a whole video!
These cartoons should be played today!!!
Thanking you for highlighting on us💜. I was searching fir more content. I saw the J5 show pop up again because Marlon’s birthday was March 12.
These brings back so many memories of just greatness.. We need 2 bring this back.
In the mid 70's a pitch was made for an all black cast version of "The Flintstones" called "The Blackstones". Pre-production art from it is available on the net, but it was never picked up.
One of the images I have of black people in animation comes from the Godzilla animated series by Hanna Barbera [1978].
One of the "Central" characters was Brock Borden, a lab assistant, and Black Man.
What was glaringly obvious very quickly was how little respect this character received from his employer, He was a skilled lab tech, but was often given the most menial, and humiliating tasks on board the research ship, and was often "Punished' like a small child when he "Messed up".
I once sat with friends, watching this show, as we analyzed the character interplay it became obvious that the character was being treated with extreme disrespect, and the fact that he was the only black adult on the show, made his treatment all the more egregious.
When you compare his treatment to the treatment of Valarie in the "Josie and the Pussycats" series in 1971-72 the difference is night and day. Valarie, was the intelligent one of the group, Calm and level-headed, Most often the voice of reason when all the white characters around her were falling all over themselves in panic; and this cartoon was made seven years EARLIER than the Godzilla series.
Valarie was an extremely positive portrayal of a black person as "One of the team", capable, confident, and if not a leader, then an exceptionally good "Lancer" back-up to Josie.
Hanna-Barbera was a leader in getting black faces in children's entertainment in the 70's, so I'm not 100% sure that the portrayal of Brock was intended to be racist, or if he just drew the "Comedy relief" card for that particular show, and sensitivity over previous portrayals of people of colour made the portrayal seem intentionally denigrating.
Still, the character and his treatment makes me cringe more than the irritating baby Godzilla in the show.
The PJs was everything. I remember watching that show as a family, right after the Simpsons :)
Your channel gives me such an appreciation for my upbringing
You forgot to add Doc McStuffins. I was a pre-teen/teen when it came out but I used to watch it here and there.
