Homeless Since Age 9

  • It's easy to judge another person without having lived through their experiences. It's easy to think that you'd have made different choices, but the truth is, we are all different, and we all react to life differently.
Every time a person shares they ended up homeless at a very young age, my heart breaks. I cannot imagine a child growing up outside on the streets. I used to work as a family case manager. I know many people like to cast blame that homelessness is a choice, but when a child feels safer outside than with their family, I do not believe they can make a choice other than to survive. Besides, if homelessness was a punishment for bad decisions, we'd all be homeless.
Robert lives in a shack made of tarps and other materials they could find. The shack provides some privacy, but it's not much protection from the heavy that hit Los Angeles last week. When I first met Robert, he lived with his partner in a tent on a hill nearby. Caltrans came and swept the area but didn't clean anything; they just displaced homeless people out from where they were living. It really makes no sense that Caltrans would make life harder for Robert and his partner, but that's only the start of their problems.
Robert holds a posted sign for Los Angeles Municipal Code Section 41.18, otherwise known as a "sit and lie" law meant to criminalize homelessness. 41.18 defines that “nobody can sit, lie, or sleep on a street, sidewalk, or any other public location.” As a result, on January 10th, homelessness will be illegal in the area where Robert and hundreds of other homeless people live.
Several hundred enforcement zones around Los Angeles will soon make homelessness illegal, yet Los Angeles is not providing support for homeless people to get off the streets. Moreover, making homelessness illegal in large sections of the city reduces the places homeless people can live all at a time when homelessness is growing. This is cruel and insane, and it will make homelessness even worse!
Robert is the caregiver to his partner. She is HIV+ and suffers from mental illness. Because they are not married, service providers want to split them up. In just a few days, homelessness will be illegal where they live, and they have no place to go.

    About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

I've watched many of your videos and this is the first time I've left a comment. The young man in this video has touched my heart and made me realize the strength and resilience that so many of the "invisible" people in our society have inside of them. Although I've had my own struggles, I think I would retreat into myself or be so consumed with anger if I had (as this young man said) to live in a situation like this for even a day. The huge difference would always be though ~ that simply knowing it was only a day and that my privileged life was waiting for me ~ would make the whole experience very fake. It would be hard, yet still fake. So many of the people who you have interviewed are genuine and true souls and continue to survive where many would simply give up. I wish they could see just how amazing their spirits are. The whole situation around homelessness is overwhelming, unfair, and reflects so badly on our society. I mean it is wonderful that people are building tiny homes for the homeless, but why should they have to live in a tiny home? It's like when people give away old cans of food (like Lima Beans ~ sorry to anyone who likes Lima Beans) to their local food bank with the attitude that, "if you are hungry, you'll eat anything" or worse yet "Beggars can't be choosers". Why kind of reverse logic is this? Food is one of the easiest comforts we can provide for someone ~ why would anyone offer food with such a negative (bordering on cruel) attitude connected to it? I could go on and on. Mark, you are one of the special people on this earth. You are making a difference in the lives of people. Make sure you look after yourself too! And congrats of 26 years of sober living. That is a huge accomplishment.

@@pakliv3243 I think they meant that SHELTER shouldn’t be limited to people who can shell out THOUSANDS of dollars a month for rent or a mortgage, esp. since you’ll have nothing to show for your investment. 💸
If there are people getting rich off of collecting rent, there’s something wrong w/ that financial model. The money’s not going back into the community, in most cases, and it’s not like landlords usually care about upkeep of the property.
Shelter rates should be tied to the incomes of “regular “ folks, not those who got lucky in their lot in life, and have more money than they will ever need (yet feel like too much is still never enough). Inflation goes up, while incomes have remained stagnant. Also, keep in mind that there are lots of smart & talented people who never got to discover or develop their gifts, due simply to the family, culture, community, etc. that they were born into.. That’s also a key determinant of income potential. There are wage slaves who could actually be leaders and never have to worry about being able to pay for anything, if only even one person could see what they’re capable of.
Taking an unhoused person into one’s home isn’t the only solution. There are plenty of people we wouldn’t want to share a household with, regardless of their ability to pay.

If he has been without stabled housing since 9, I question his mothers lifestyle and choices. He should at least have been protected until he was a teenager. It also tells me that the system in Arizona is not doing enough to protect vulnerable kids. The teachers should have noticed and informed the authorities about sheltering him. I’ve seen young kids his age walking alone, going to the corner store to buy stuff. I’ve asked them where they’re parents are. Sometimes they had pretty decent answers, other times they would run. I’ve never seen kids out on the street at night hours by themselves where I lived in South Florida.

We must be watching a different video!
He’s filming, the man he’s interviewing stalled and keeps stalling in a search for words lost ( maybe it’s the weed that affected his brain development, he says he’s been smoking weed since childhood) in his thoughts so Mark was trying to connect to help him along to keep the interview moving, like you have to do when filming. Mark BRIEFLY mentions his homeless experience , again to keep the narrative moving but he doesn’t dwell on his life experience so stop it already!
This most disheartening part of watching these videos is how people are so invested in being a victim, I get it your childhood was just awful, but the victim consciousness, feeling sorry for yourself never worked from me. My dad was an alcoholic, my mom was always attention seeking so 2 immature adults that should have never had children.

What is sobriety? It's to be in a state of liberty and power in which we are not manipulated, coerced, dominated by fear or other social and emotional pressures. Seeing in that light, sobriety is altogether a rare thing. Mark is sober from street drugs and other traditional substances, but it doesn't mean he is free. He still has ways of thinking that were embedded in him. It's interestint and many would not see this as a problem and it isn't necessarily one, but the way Mark behaves, immediately you can tell he is your average american. An average italian, french, german will all act vastly different. Their social systems control their behavior, as well as ours. Hence, Robert's question of what it meants to be sober pertinent. Perhaps... no one on the planet is truly sober besides saints and transcendent masters if you believe in this. It's a way of thinking.

    • @AlvorecerDaAlma
      @AlvorecerDaAlma ปีที่แล้ว

Just being clear. Me and probably Robert are tackling this from a perspective greater than just chemical. It's not because we are not on drugs that our minds are clean and our perceptions uncorrupted. I am also very impressed about the intellect that these homeless friends have. I don't know if it's coincidence or not, but usually, nearly all that appear on the videos seem to have a higher than average perception. They are kinder, wiser. It surprised me and also opened my eyes.

Mark dang dude homelessness has hit Baltimore, Maryland big time. For the longest time Baltimore was immune to BIG City homelessness because housing costs were reasonable for MOST people. NOW in 2024, Housing in Baltimore is sick expensive. Ugly nasty little houses in the ghetto were $100,000 now sell for $250K. Nicer small houses in the suburbs that sold for $250K now sell for $500K. A starter home costs $199K. Real life example my first house 2 bedroom, 1 bath, 625 square feet. I sold it for $129 and today its worth $201K. Cheap nasty county ghetto 1 bedroom condo's cost $100K. I can't afford a $500K house. Just to live near me you must make $80K a year to buy something cheap. It's insane!
