This is one of the songs that could equal anything the rest of the world had to offer at the time in the same genre....too bad no one outside of Australia and perhaps NZ could hear it at the time. Maybe at the time they would have pressed up 500 singles to meet demand. 20, 30, 40 years later the rest of the world discovers them and these 500 singles are worth a goldmine if anyone can find a copy. A big thank you to those people who have shared these rare tracks with the rest of the world :)
The Black Diamonds came from Lithgow, in the Blue Mountains 94 miles west of Sydney. I was a friend of the drummer Col McCauley. They were regarded as a great band locally & it was never understood why they were not successful nationally. I bought the 45 vinyl after its release -now gone! They played phenomenal dance gigs at the local town hall. Sad to hear of passing of great musos.
tomtokenator, another incredible find. This 45is one of the holy grails of Oz garage collecting, an absolute monster. In fact, I've never seen a copy in the flesh. These boys came from Lithgow, a coal town nowhere near the beach. But what a killer!!!
I've Played this Black Diamond's video so much the damn computer is going to freaking blow, baby. I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!! They are simply great. I also like the intro with the girl saying "It's the Black Diamonds and they're on the beach having a ball." GREAT, DAMN GREAT. CRL
I love this song, it's a shame today that some bands can't get this kind of energy into their songs. It has a great sound too, forget all that over produced crap, this is the stuff.
Most incredible music and video. The ocean, everythying. The vocalist--just fantastic, shades on upside-down with such powerful yet meaningful lyrics of a young man yearning for his love, no matter what. Hearing "I Want You, I Need You," reminds me of when our family went to the beach. I was only 6 years old, our dad had rented a cottage. At night I took his 5-band transistor radio and I heard The Yardbird's "Over, Under, Sideways, Down." I knew not about rock but the "Hey" chant with Beck.
WHAT THE HELL! have i stumbled upon!...... this band is FANTASTIC! How many albums did they release? and WHY werent they up there with the Stones at the time?
WOW...OK CAMPERS, HERE'S A BIG TIP. Look at the intro. This was taken from an ABC show about Oz rock...and the girl in the pic is Oscar Nominee from Underbelly...JACKIE WEAVER.
LEWELTAM : G'day , this is TIM Tam. I'M KIDDING. One of the reasons this did'nt turn up on the Nuggets 2 box set was because the tracks were chosen by a panel , and they had to reach some kind of agreement. "Friday on My Mind" is still a great song , but ,it seems they could have kept "Sorry" and lost "Friday" , bringing THIS song in.......But they agreed to narrow it down to a couple of US hit songs ("Friday" and "Pictures of Matchstick Men") in order to drum up interest here in the states , when the music should stand on it's own.
@gemear2 G'day mate, I was wondering if I get a copy of this aswell please. Great band. What a true travisty that they never got the recognition they obviously deserved. Cheers.
It's something that I've never heard of before. Did you notice that during the entire 1960s, we, fellow Americans, weren't very big on action figures? Not like the way we were back then during the entire 1980s. We definitely were. Were there any dolls or action figures of this Australian teen rock group? Were there any toy vehicles being manufactured for this Australian teen rock group? 🪨
My my, isn't Jackie juvenile! Getting old just sucks so much...another great Aussie band I never heard of...These Black Diamond guys remind me a little of the Master's Apprentices.
@KoivuTheHab While the style itself isn't making a comeback there are more than a few tributes to it. Kesha did an iggy pop tribute with the song Dirty Love and even the Japanese band, Scandal did a garage rock song on their latest album called Standard. Heck, Shonen Knife is still around and they occasionally do garage rock albums.
@456japan youtube - mp3 dot org you just put the link in and download the mp3... people may argue the "downloading" thing but in the case of this song, theres really no other way cheers
This song was the "B" side of their single "See The Way" but was a far better track. I remember reading that Alan Oloman had died sometime in the last few months. Sad
HOLY MOTHER OF GOD! wow-what the hell was going on in Australia way back when? This is fantastic.....wtf- don't they lick those psychedelic toads down there ? WILD !!!
G'day mate, my uncle Colin McAulay was the drummer of the Black Diamonds. Unfortunately he passed away on Sunday morning 13/10/2019. My mum who is Colin's Older sister & I would appreciate if you could make us a copy of any music you may have of the Black Diamonds. Thanks in advance.👍🇦🇺👍😎

@tonfan WTF as if lame toads had anything to do with how great mid - late 60's aussie rock bands were??..Aussies were playing Kick A Rock 'n' Roll is the only explanation..Like the stuff on this channel..We must agree with sentiments expressed though!

Wow...I been collecting garage since the 80's but never heard this classic...a video as well.. Wow..
CRL
We played in a band with Neil Oloman on the Darling Downs for many years. Meet Alan a few times also. Great muzos.
Amazing.....one of the best 60's garage trax I've ever heard!
I believe that's a young Jackie Weaver doing the intro.
I love this song, it's a shame today that some bands can't get this kind of energy into their songs. It has a great sound too, forget all that over produced crap, this is the stuff.
This is why I love this kind of music since I started listening back in 1965. These guys are stellar!
The greatest double sided Oz 60's garage/freakbeat single ever IMO. Original copy just went for $1400. on ebay. Oh for a 45 reissue.
Wow, I gonna wear my shades upside down!

This is SO tuff!!! Wish I had the record, on the other hand I'd probably play it to shreds if sucha thing is possible... Fave rave!!
They've been down on the beach all day having a ball !!!! So fresh and the cut is sooooo in the pocket, sickly
Way ahead of it's time!
that fuzz lick sounds like what cream put on that disraeli gears track with a few extra beats
WHAT THE HELL! have i stumbled upon!...... this band is FANTASTIC! How many albums did they release? and WHY werent they up there with the Stones at the time?
A monster of a 60's garage rocker. What a find. Thx
WOW...OK CAMPERS, HERE'S A BIG TIP. Look at the intro. This was taken from an ABC show about Oz rock...and the girl in the pic is Oscar Nominee from Underbelly...JACKIE WEAVER.
I thought it was Jackie Weaver. What show was that?
My uncle is the bass player i love there songs :D
One of the coolest Garage Punk songs of the 60s, listen to that fuzz guitar!
this is certainly my favourite aussie track from the 60s,thanks for putting this video up.
Could've come out yesterday! What a monster...
This is AMAZING!!!!!!! Who were these guys. Progressive - great sound - excellent!
it was a lot of things the passion, the acid n the soul no one's got it like then but its makin a come back for sure

THE YARDBIRDS IF THEY HAD STAYED TOGETHER AND NOT LAPSED INTO LED ZEP
Singer looks like he could be in the Jesus and Mary Chain.
tbh looks a bit like an 80s indie vid playing on the beach, in a field etc :D
WOW
thanks tomtokenator-I've added it to my playlist!
LOVE IT! Does anyone know what beach this is shot at and who shot it?
upside-down shades. cool.
The best that ever happened/will ever happen to Lithgow.
Edgar Winter's sitting on the beach, taking in the Black Diamonds' performance...
great++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Anyone have any idea what bass guitar that is? It's not a Hofner, could be a Maton?
this is such an amazing song!... but is it me or is the lead singer wearing his sunnies upside down?
I think these guys came from lithgow also recorded as another name.
My my, isn't Jackie juvenile! Getting old just sucks so much...another great Aussie band I never heard of...These Black Diamond guys remind me a little of the Master's Apprentices.

Only released two singles. Get hold of the Ugly Things comps for more great Aust. pun/garage/freakbeat stuff.
Thanks for the lead
