Wikipedia lays it out quite clearly
Loose terminology may also be used to suggest meaning that a dichotomy exists when it does not, e.g., the use of the expressions "Western medicine" and "Eastern medicine" to suggest that the difference is a cultural difference between the Asiatic east and the European west, rather than that the difference is between evidence-based medicine and treatments that do not work.[9]

I think that alternative medicine is so popular because it requires some sort of input from the patient.
When all the patient has to do is take a pill and wait, it turns them into a passive participant. People tend to want some kind of role in treatment. They want to be involved.
A personal example is infertility treatments. My job was to show up at the clinic. People took blood, gave shots, and performed tests. I didn't even have to have relations with my husband. They performed IUIs.
It made me feel helpless. I had no part in this. I tried to gain some control over the situation. I wanted to participate in the process. I tried special diets. I took royal bee jelly. Acupuncture. Yoga.
Did they help? Yes. But not in the way you may think. All they did was make me feel like I was doing something. It wasn't real. They did nothing. But at least I didn't feel helpless anymore.

@@BentDoorFrame Very well. Here is the list between pseudoskeptics and skeptics:
      True Skeptics / Open-Minded Skeptics
: Questions everything and takes nothing on faith, even from cherished established institutions. Asks questions to try to understand new things and are open to learning about them. Applies critical examination and inquiry to all sides, including their own. Withholds judgment and does not jump to rash conclusions. Seeks the truth and considers it the highest aim. Thinks in terms of possibilities rather than in preserving fixed views. Fairly and objectively weighs evidence on all sides. Acknowledges valid convincing evidence rather than ignoring or denying it. Possess solid sharp common sense and reason. Are able to adapt their paradigms to new evidence and update their hypothesis to fit the data. When all conventional explanations for a phenomenon are ruled out, are able to accept paranormal ones. Accepts that there are mysteries and revels in trying to understand them. Views science as a tool and methodology, not as a religion or authority to be obeyed. Understands the difference between the scientific process and the scientific establishment. Acknowledges that the scientific establishment is subject to politics, corruption, control, censorship and suppression, as all human based institutions are - and therefore must be critically examined and scrutinized, rather than taken on faith, especially in the light of contrary evidence to their claims. Will admit they are wrong when the evidence calls for it.
Pseudoskeptics such as sciencebasedmedicine such as Steven novella and all the other so-called skeptics: Does not question anything from established non-religious institutions, but takes whatever they say on faith and demands that others do the same. Does not ask questions to try to understand new things, but judges them by whether they fit into orthodoxy. Applies "critical thinking" only to that which opposes orthodoxy or materialism, but never to the status quo itself. Immediately judges as false and debunks anything that contradicts their paradigm. Are not interested in truth, evidence or facts, only in defending their views. Cannot think in terms of possibilities, but sees their paradigms as fixed and constant. Are willing to lie and deceive to discredit their opponents. Automatically dismisses and denies all data that contradicts materialism and orthodoxy. Are judgmental and quick to draw conclusions about things they know little or nothing about. Scoffs and ridicules what they oppose instead of using objective analysis and examination. When faced with evidence or facts they can't refute, uses semantics, word games and denial to try to obfuscate the issue. Unable to adapt their paradigms to new evidence, and denies data which doesn't fit into them. When all conventional explanations for an unexplainable phenomenon are ruled out, are still not able to accept paranormal ones. Dislikes mystery and uncertainty, and insist that all unknown phenomena must have a mundane explanation. Views the scientific establishment as a religion and authority to be taken on faith and never questioned or challenged. Does not understand the difference between the scientific process/methodology and the scientific establishment institution. Assumes that the scientific establishment is objective and unbiased, and free of politics, corruption, control, censorship and suppression for no other reason than blind faith in authority. Will never admit that they are wrong no matter what, regardless of evidence.

Compare this with a dentist , you go to a dentist with a tooth ache and you go away cured so dentistry is more pure science that many aspects of medical practice where patients don't always get a cure from a medical consultation

Two other dentists said I didn't, that it was a regular cavity and could be filled.. So I didn't get the root canal, i got a filling.
She kept calling my house, for YEARS, bugging me to "come and get it done because insurance has already approved of it."

A homework for fans of evidence-based medicine: When you come across any "robust evidence", don't forget to check who supported the study financially.. Also check whether there was any contrary "less robust" evidence reported recenty.. After doing this homework for 10 years, one may question trustworthiness of "scientific evidence" in medicine.. Prevalence of "financial evidence" is much higher than at least what we are taught in medical school.. Don't think only about pharma industry, one has to consider publication n education industries as well.. In my opinion, a doctor must use his/her own brain n experience while deciding why a patient got a disease n what could be the best drug for the patient rather than chasing "recent evidence" blindly... By the way, I am an MD doctor trained in allopathy n I have already done my homework... 😊

Supplement companies don’t have to prove anything at all, they can market and sell products in a completely unregulated market, unless a bunch of people die from their products they can do as they please. Alternative medicine practitioners operate in a similarly unlicensed and unregulated way in much of the US. 30 different US states do not license or regulate naturopaths AT ALL. Any random person could hang out a shingle declaring themself a naturopath in one of those states, and as long as nobody complained and he didn’t kill anybody, he could get away with it and rake in the dollars for many years.

The mistrust in “science” and medicine didn’t correct from nothing. Innumerable reports of mistreatment, abuse and downright malpractice is the reason why alternative medicine is becoming more attractive. In life, whoever tries to monopolize an issue is usually the one with more vested interest. Biggest question here is that why don’t we integrate these alternative treatments instead of alienate them. Most of the time physicians send patients out to different specialists after another trying to find a diagnosis let alone a cure. Since people do get results from alternative medicine why not incorporate them into mainstream?

    • @MortyCJ

Rather idiotic and simple minded approach, while big pharma focuses on instant treatment in order for quick cash, US doctors have been pushed to do research on artificial drugs in order to treat things in the short run(the easy route) while the true route should be towards cell therapy in order to give a more natural result which doesn’t affect health in the long run rather create a stronger , labeling alternative medicine as only acupuncture or naturalists is untrue and false as alternative medicine in today’s world is greatly expanding looking towards individual signaling cascades in order to treat things from the source, sadly the US is not interested and will never be as long as big pharma reigns supreme we should learn from our eastern neighbors in Asia and Europe instead

What a ridiculous thing to say. Firstly, there’s less money in making healthy people healthy. And secondly, there are drugs which do that. It’s that the possible margin of improvement are small compared with risks. Also it depends on what you mean by keeping you “healthy”. Preventive medicine? People take a daily aspirin all the time to reduce any possible future heart conditions. There a whole class of drugs called nootropics.

lauchzwiebel Intelligence & knowledge equals "huge ego"? With increasing belief in psedoscience treatments & scams, Dr. Novella stands up against famous pseudoscience promoters like Deepak, Dr. Oz, & Oprah. That's heroic to me. Science Based humanists are in the minority. Why? Because it's difficult to learn, however, it saves lives. Dr. Novella goes out of his way to help provide accurate science-based medicine to the public, teach medical students, practices medicine, organizes science podcast, started the only science-based medicine blog, & more. Not for money & fame, but, because critical thinking is lacking & he cares as a humanist. Especially with the lesser educated most at risk. It's how Trump became president. Dr. Steve has helped me get accurate diagnoses & improved my quality of life. Before I fell for pseudoscientific treatments & scams that has caused severe permanent nerve damage leaving me dependant upon a caregiver rest of my life. All bc I fell for those scams & believed there was evidence for "alt med" & it was harmless. I was wrong. We need more like him willing to speak up for science. Just because someone speaks well, doesn't mean they have an ego. I see it as someone to learn from.
