This video saved me! I was locked out with dead battery and malfunctioning lock after being gone for three weeks and car sitting the whole time, and could not get the hood open until I found this video! It took me forever but I finally got the hood to release after spending about 3 hours trying! I also had to create my own tool by bending a small rod to get up under the piece that releases it. Thank you Nathan!! 🙏🏼
Don Wijesinghe how did you go? Do you have any tips please? My battery is completely dead, I can’t get into my boot or into the car. So my only option I think, is to pop the bonnet, then jump start it, so then I can have power to open the car doors.
Lol! Two dirty little holes! Ha-ha! Thanks for the video Nathan! I just sent it to my friend who's hood cable broke as he is trying to bring his e46 across the country! Hopefully he gets it open somehow, cause I couldn't explain it better, much less show him anything right now. Always appreciate your expert advice!
Thanks for the video. I could not open the hood as I could not get access to the part I had to move. I do now have an understanding of what has to be done and will keep on trying.
I’d just like to add that anyone watching - make sure you’re certain you the boot lid is trapped by the posts & not the secondary latch @0:51 This is where my problem is - so is worth checking firstly before the bigger hassle of a job being the pins that you explain how to fix. I pulled the grill out where the lever protrudes through (although I’ll check later if one needs to). The secondary latch doesn’t fully release - but it’s not a massive problem as you can use your finger to push the rear of this latch to release. It’s a bit diff to explain but worth fiddling about in that location Maybe you can film/add this to your TH-cam’s?! Cheers for the explanation / video on the problems associated with the pins - very informative 👍 Ah - just found TH-cam on what I was explaining - it’s on How To Automotive channel - they use a pick tool to release - it’s not how I release but I’ve the grill off & can use hands to push rear part off to rehearse - they don’t remove the grill
Nathan’s Bmw thanx for the video. We literally struggled for a day to open the hood till I watched your video and did in even less that 5 minutes . We had to put the oil in the car and we did it successfully. Thanx for the video 😃
You sir are a genius! Did the shaving the plastic, manually push actuator with screwdriver thing, and after about 20 mins of really not believing it would work it did! Thank you so much
Greetings from Germany here! My hood is stuck on mine aswell. I shaved off basicly all the plastic around it and i cant even feel the actuator with my fingers. Is there a way it broke off? What do i do if it broke of?
@@jakubmarincic7543 i gave it to a mechanic after some more attempts. He managed to open it pretty quickly but dont really know how and replaced the broken cable
To save y'all some time here's what worked for me. I work on bmws Dailey and this one kicked my ass but once I figured it out I was like well now I know.... Remove driver side fender liner and if you look up above the lower radiator hose you can see the hood cable (look hard I missed it at first) give the cable a good pull towards the rear of the vehicle and if you're lucky like me the tension is enough to disengage the hood latches
Hey Nathan..my BMW is a right handed..so I managed to open the passenger side coz the cable is still attached but the driver side I can't seem to find the cable
Another way to open hood Pop out both kidney grills break them if you have too you can get those grills out without breaking them I’ve done it. Kidney grills aren’t that expensive Amazon Once those grills are out You’ll be able to see both pins and springs on the pins stick a screwdriver in lift the spring stick another screwdriver under the rubber that’s just below the spring lift the rubber up stick a pic hook in there there is a wire that holds the pins in in the drivers side on both pins Stick the pic in their stick it down and move it around and pop that wire Have someone hold that side of the hood up slightly so it doesn’t lock again Now do the same to the other side bang it’s open
Appreciate the effort. But This is a poor explanation of what to do. Theres no way for me to get to that release latch. Ive cut plastic away. You still have to get to the opposite side of the piece. How the hell do i get my damn hood open?
Quick question as not sure my problem is 100% like this, when I pop the hood from inside the car - it pops up fine. But then when I go to use the lever to lift the final bit up and the hood fully... it's stuck. Any ideas?
saved my life!!! my battery died, with the car locked, and the driver door froze shut so I ended up breaking the handle. the only wait to go in was to take the battery out, recharge, and open some other door to be able to drive and heat up the whole car to unfreeze the door... cool, right?
My e90 is having a similar problem, except the release latch is functioning, however the latch that actually holds the hood down is too gummed/corroded up to spring up when the release is pulled. I have to hold the release lever and then have someone pull up on the hood to get the hold down latch to pivot enough to let go of the hood. Any thoughts on how to free that up?
I love these videos .. Very well explained along with thr footage. Any chance you have a video of a E53 broken hood cable? I had already replaced mine but this time it aparently broke off where the first cable meets the second cable. Any suggestion? And keep up the good work.
Dude my driverside cable broke off at the pin latch .easy to open the passanger side but the driverside wasnt going well but then bam Nate gonna know i bet an sure shit another easy to follow how-to . I've thanked you before an will do every time you save my ass. Thank you
If none of these methods work like in my case I had to cut the factory hood pins with a SawZaw I removed the kidney grills and stuck the sawzaw blade onto the pins at let it rip till it cut threw
This guy has no clue, useless video for views...dont butcher your grill and fan shroud, that cable is never going to release the hood by just "pulling on it with your hand" hence you actually dont see him do anything practical apart showing us upside module from an e36.
Easier Method- 1. Use screwdriver to take our kidney grilled and hope you don’t break too many plastic tabs. 2. Get reciprocating/buzz saw and cut through the pins (in the centre of the springs). 2 mins and the hood is open. 3. Fit new locks, pins, latches and cables.
I just smashed out both my grills then used a sawzall to cut the pins. I fing hate deadbolted hoods! It's like the biggest middle finger sandpaper dildo to a mechanic.

Soulfire Evolution I’m currently in the same situation as you were man. Is there any tips you can give me to help open the hood ?

It's not easy to get into the hood with a broken cable, video like Nathan's is a great thing to have in this situation
His is talk about how to open hood, but on his video hood is always opeden LOL
Exactly .... doesn't make sense
A lot of thanks man. You helped. And the voiceover was the key once for me. And the visuals helped rhe first time!!! Life saver. Thanks!!! 🤪

Greatly appreciate Heavenly sent people like you. Willing to go extra mile teaching us!! God bless the work of your hands.

what the hell is this ????? can you show me the moment in this video when you open the hood ???? thats what the title said, unfreaking real
Great video, got the same problem! Keep them coming.....
Legend, thank you
On right had drive you can pull the connecting cabal to open the near side but for the off side you will need to hack saw through the pin 🙈
What about when its locked and closed!?
Exactly done but with 1 problem this only works on left hand drive . On right hand drive it’s all upside down and back to front 🙈
Thank you sir
Mine just broke. But I THINK its inside the cabin where it broke. Temp Fix is a Phillips and a needle nose vice grip.
Hi, how i open a hood from bmw 540i v8, with broken cable ?

nothing is broken on my hood. but i have a flashlight stuck under the hood right above the driver haad lights and i cant get it open.
How to open trank ?

Thanks for the video but instead of explaining you should be doing it there we can better understand
Thank You
The hood is already open. Good video but my hood it stuck shut.
Did you actually watch the video?
The hood's open so that you can see what to do and not just stab randomly in the dark with a screwdriver
I know he didn’t show actual when his car need to be open

Just remember UK models are reverse to this
My actuator won’t release It is 100% stuck
I’ve tried but the little latch will not move at all
Yes pretty useless video, only logical method is to release the 4 torx screws on the slam panels with a micro ratchet and low profile torx bit.
So basically I cant get it open without breaking the grill two second video.
I just smashed out both my grills then used a sawzall to cut the pins. I fing hate deadbolted hoods! It's like the biggest middle finger sandpaper dildo to a mechanic.
Three-and-a-half minutes just to get to the main point. But there's not even truly show how to do it. 🤦
This method is literally impossible
