Saw her live in St Louis back in the 90's, needless to say she is the quintessential artist in every way. She could just touch her bass guitar and cool, fly ass notes would just pour out! She was ahead of her time if you ask me. I don't think mainstream R&B fans were willing to completely accept an openly gay black R&B/NeoSoul woman, even though her artistry and musicianship was/is undeniable. She definitely should've been more of a mainstream star. But she's obviously got some long-time fans like myself and other folks showing her love.
@@vaporentertainment saw Me'Shell in Atlanta, at the Variety Playhouse, early 2000s. It's a somewhat small venue, but just perfect to feel her bass dig deep into your soul. Her set seemed kind of short to me, then she just quickly walked off. When I tell you people started stomping their feet, clapping, screaming out her name to come back out for an encore. We in fact yelled, "ENCORE!" She came back on stage and did "Leviticus: Fagg*t." The crowd went absolutely crazy!!! Probably one of the best concerts I've ever been to. Love her!
This sister right here is something else. I remember when the Higher Learning soundtrack came out, and all I kept listening to was this track. #killigthatbass
Whose listening in 2023....I Bought the Soundtrack to Higher Learner I Was So Disappointed She Didn't Release It On Her Album.....She's One Helluva BASS PLAYER 🎸
This sistah is as equally talented a d authentic as Badu, Scott, Arie, and any other of those worthy Neo Souk sistahs. She was just not as popular as then and it was probably b/c of her “eccentric” appearance. But she was vicious w/her higher conscious lyrics. A straight lyrical savage
Worse, Doc- she's the START of neo-soul. I remember when Me'Shell's first album came out, 'Plantation Lullabies and Vibe magazine, while doing an album review of it, struggled to come up with a name for her style of r&b. The article was one of many that started to call it neo-soul. Oh yeah, we blacks sometimes talk about how white people mis-appropriate black sounds and ideas into their music, make the loot from doing that (Elvis?), then bounce. Well Madonna didn't do that-MeShell Ndegeocello was Madonna's first signing to her boutique record label, Maverick. Real gift to us from Madonna. From MeShell, you get Erykah, Joi, Jill, DeAngelo,Angie, Kindred and on. Real gift..
I remember back in the days when I used to visit my cousin in his drom room at Hampton university, all he would play is this. This make me think about the good old times at Hampton university, over there looking it all of them beautiful black sisters,I loved me some Hampton university back than.
Me and you both, I was there from 1980-86, and yes of course they were beautiful , miss my Home By the Sea...back then we did not have anyone comparable to Me'Shell
17 thumbs down huh? I'll bet they're all together in some basement playing pin the needle on the dope fiend. This song is the essence of beautiful music
