I'm a bassoonist and I hand scraped a clarinet reed from tube cane today and it was not anywhere near the worst reed you'd get in a box you buy. Was no where close to the best either. Going to try and get access to a clarinet reed profiler to see if I can further experiment.
I'm interested in reed making for perhaps an unusual reason: I'm working at a band/orchestra repair shop. I know plenty about string and percussion repairs but brass/woodwinds are totally new to me both as a player and a repairman. Learning to make reeds is giving me really good insight into how a wind player thinks while I refine my craftsmanship skills.
I've made my own reeds for years and the key is can quality. Much of cane used in commercial reeds is too "young." Reed making gives the player so much more control. That said, I'm now retiring and have reed-making tools available for sale. Please write me a note if interested in purchasing the equipment.
Now that you have started making some reeds you really like, will you be regularly making your own? Or will you continue treating it as a hobby / tinkering activity?
Hey Javan, that’s a good question! I’m not exactly sure right now to be honest. I will probably continue to make my reeds for the moment, since I have the time to do so. But, I acknowledge that it will probably be one of the first things I stop doing if I run out of time in the future.
I wish I had a good answer for this. I know a lot of people use Rigotti cane and there are quite a few places where you can get that, including directly from Rigotti. I would also look into the cane Reeds' n Stuff stocks and Innoledy in NYC seems to have a wide range of tube cane as well! But I cannot attest to the quality of the cane from any of these places as it depends on each individual batch! Sorry I can't be of more help!

With the amount of time required to make them, the individual reed testing you would have to do, the customer service you would have to provide, and the sanitation factor, I really don’t think it would be time or cost effective. You would have to charge quite a bit of money to make it worth it and ultimately you would probably price yourself out of the market. But I’m sure some people do it! I just don’t think it would be worth it for me.
