if we linked it to iu's personal story, how she raised by granma in poor condition at early age bc financial issue i assume at that time how she feels abandoned, feel rage & hatred as portrayed by tangwei but in the end she acknowledge her mom did try her best. At the end of the mv we return to the past of IU's mother and grandmother, since the relationships of mothers and daughters are a historically repeated loop. indicated at their resemblance, not only physically but also mental state. how the mother saw the daughter and could tell she was feeling exactly like she were feeling towards her mother, the intense emotion that full of various emotions. its a loop Her name is #Shh... In SK's context, a mum immediately 'loses' her name once her child is born. She wld b known as xxx's omma. Also, it's v common for a young child to think their mum's name is Mummy. Will a mother's name be forgotten? shh = she hid her(?) its not abt f (friendship) is not about l (love) we got smtg else = mother daughter bond that way beyond that (but its also all abt friendship & love actually) iu (s) = she (as the subject of the story aka mom) tangwei (h) = her (as the object aka daughter) Tang wei :playing as the daughter shows how we can carry painful words/experiences caused by our moms until we're older. Later on in life, esp when we became mothers ourselves, realizing that they only did or said those just out of love . #IU"Shh..." is about relationships between women, between mothers and daughters. Women who remain enigmas. A mother was also once a daughter. A cycle that continues around the world. Her name is "Shh.." since we can replace it with any woman's name. "Shh..." is poetry ❤️
For everyone trying to understand the video, search for translations of Tang Wei's letter to IU describing the filming of the MV and how the song and story impacted her personally. It explains, contextualizes, and solidifies both the MV's story and how it resonated with its lead actress. Reading the letter and then rewatching the MV makes it even more impactful.
IU said “Shh.' contains the voices of female vocalists from each generation. The lyrics are about important women in our lives. I'm singing about my mom, HYEIN is singing about her first friend. WONSUN JOE sings about the complicated emotions towards one's role model. It's a song about women sharing their complicated emotions that can't be summarized simply as either love, friendship, obsession or something else.” Plus, the participating singers, directors, actors, and narrators are all women. Although (maybe) the main story is about a mother and daughter, because that’s the first and the most important relationship between women and it seems like IU was first inspired by mother-daughter relationship, It’s not only about that, It’s about the diverse and complex relationships between different women and the respect we have for them. The song is about female solidarity through generations that all women can relate to!!!
It's a story of mother daughter relationship .View it through the lens of the 'Mobius strip" referenced on the top of the doorway in the beginning and end of the MV
And I read somewhere that because möbius strip has no beginning nor end, that Tang Wei and IU are taking on role of mother AND grandmother and child(?)… generations that repeat without end… I think you’re close to figuring this out
That’s what I’m thinking. My closing reaction theory wig IU being the mom and some sort on time traveling going on but I don’t know the Mobius Strip so I’ll have to look that up. I do remember the sign you’re mentioning! Still the whaaaaa
In the video I think tang wei is the girl in the photo all grown up and that IU is her mother. I personally don't think IU is actually there but that tang wei is just thinking about her mom and her image of her mom is still from when tang wei was a teen or possibly before tang wei was even born. The two had a complicated possibly estranged relationship in tang wei's teen years and adulthold. We actually do see what's underneath the hatch door on the floor and it's that scene were IU and the little girl (tang wei) are relaxing on all those sheets and looking at each other. It reminded tang wei that she did once have a good relationship with her mom (IU) and that at the end of the day her mother does love her. I think at the very end during Patti Kim's narration, tang wei decided to let go and forgive her mother for the way she's treated her over the years cause she's realized as a human and a woman her mother went through her own struggles as well. I'm not sure who the two ladies at the very end during the credits were but I personally think itnwas the mother (IU) as a young person and her own mother, showing that mother-daughter relationships are a story as old as time. There will always be mothers and daughters
Ive seen many theories talking about an estranged relationship with ones mother but i think it also applies to the average mother-daughter relationship. Sometimes you just dont see eye to eye with them or dont understand where they are coming from but when you reach that age or become a mother yourself you finally see things from their perspective which is why i think they chose to have iu & tang wei around similar ages in the video.
😂 Confused is an understatement. I had to look it up everywhere to find some explanation basically saying mother&daughter relationship also mentioned about time and space kinda like IU other song "Above the Time" but completely different story
What was vexing for me was not all the misting eyes, but that curious, almost sinister smile by Tang Wei when IU was in driver seat… creepy or mysterious?
The mv and lyrics felt complex right? Exactly what IU intented but once you get the message, you can actually appreciate why and how it was made that way.

Felt like a kind of delirious emotion to me!
