Love these shows. Time capsules. I'm a 1973 graduate like Delilah and neat to see a 17 year old 1973 young lady again in real time, not a movie, even though 1973 movies, many are excellent reflections of that time.
I'm always amazed at how well-spoken and articulate Delilah was when she was only 17. Fast forward to 2023 and most 17 year-old girls I've encountered can't even string together a coherent sentence.
As a kid, I found them incredibly glamorous and good looking. My family and the media said they were strange, so I probably bought into that, but secretly I thought they were very very cool, and the mom was beautiful. I loved how they seemed to be able to be themselves in their family.
THANK YOU. I remember the buzz about this, but was only 11?, If older, I would have been so engrossed and followed the films and futire family updates. Can I find the HBO reunion or PBS film about the HONEST, dear, sweet dreamer Lance and his passing for purchase? I grew up in NYC and was always aware of media, pop culture music and was later out in every club etc., but always wish I had been @ 5 years older as i was too young and missed enjoying a good part of the 70's.. RIP Lance and your free spirit. Thank you for sharing this/these videos.
Um, Miketheprofessor, if you look at pictures of Robin Williams and many others in the late 70's - Magnum P.I., etc. they all wore the Hawaiin shirts, jeans, sport coats..I'm a gal and I notice fashion.
The show about the Loud family was the first time I heard the term “gay” referring to Lance. Isn’t that odd, before their show it was never mentioned on TV.
These kids: "I wish I had something to say", "Please say something intelligent." Today's kids, meanwhile, won't shut up and have absolutely zero filter.
Today's 'Reality Shows' has the producers and directors guiding the main characters into creating drama. This '70s series was shown, as it is, which PBS, along with CSPAN, allows the viewers to interpret what they watch for themselves.
I don't know what year this was filmed, or how old gaykid is..but fashions change gradually, not, Oh! it's 1980, everything changes immediately. Lance's outfit is very Mork of Mork and Mindy, which aired in 1978.
This interview was in 1973, so I guess you're saying Lance was 5 years ahead of his time! I was just coming out at this time, my name is Lance, and this was my introduction to Lance Loud and his family (I was 15). I immediately started parting my hair in the middle, wearing two different (florescent) color socks, and throwing around catch phrases I'd heard from Lance. He was possibly the greatest (gay) influence on my life for many years, until I finally met other gay people in college. He was/ IS truly my idol!
Lance was made out by the media to be the star of the series. He wasnt it was Grant... Lance was the first out gay on TV, but I thought he was playing to the camera..
Grant probably had the most screen time of any of the kids. His dilemmas and behavior were probably closest to his contemporaries across the USA. There was a pathos and ironic humor to Grant. He was the most self-aware member of the family, wise beyond his years. I was rooting for him even though in rewatching the series he's lazy. Come to think of it, not much different than most 16-year olds in 1971.
+wheelinthesky300 It was a great show. MTV tried to copy it with their reality shows in the 80s. But, what always happens- which didnt in 'An American Family'- is everyone played to the camera too much.
@@Twentythousandlps And yet "opinion" can be so easily dismissed.. Cause only the braindamaged can deny the obviousness of what is NATURAL and GOES TOGETHER and brings forth FRUIT/LIFE as created by GOD?... And instead endorse what obviously does not go together or bring forth fruit/life, but actually brings death and all manner of degradation and harm to society and individuals..

I wouldn't say Lance's style was already in "the 80s", but he certainly didn't fit in 1973 as well. I think he was in a long buffering period between the mid-70s to the early 80s, lol. His hairstyle certainly wouldn't be popular until some five years ahead (starting around '78), and his blazer and shirt combination surely had a 1979-80 New Wave-ish vibe, but still, those pants and shoes didn't match those times, nor does it match 1973.
@gaykid80 I agree with you, I think he knew alot about newest fashion because he was gay (not that there's anything wrong with that) Still for 1973 he had MTV look witch didn't start til 1980
I'll take their "sniveling whining voices" to today's women who seem to all copy the same valley girl/ daddies princess persona with all the studied moves they have perfected in front of a mirror or each other since their 3rd grade fascination with Paris Hilton and the Olsen twins.They see themselves as sleepy eyed enchantresses with all the wisdom of the ages, there is nothing they haven't seen or done and it's all"like" so boring...humility or even a glimpse of vulnerability are so uncool..

i absolutely loved this series in the 70's. it truly was the first ( unscripted ) reality t.v. show.
The Clothes! WOW
I always thought Grant was so cute. We both live in Santa Barbara,CA born and raised in Santa Barbara.
I'm always amazed at how well-spoken and articulate Delilah was when she was only 17.

What a great show and a beautiful family. Kevin is looking very much like Nick Drake here
This so "real" and unscripted, which why it would not fly on present day T.V. This was actually a cutting edge show in it's day...
Um,yeah.

Grant’s outfit, tho! It’s great!
And was Lance really involved with Candy Darling? 🤷♀️
what year was the interview done it? Kind of important... look at the beauty and maturity of Americans in the 70s.
1973

it's a direct influence of his move to Manhatten. Total NY style mid 70's.

I saw the original show in the day. They seem so young now, especially lance and the girls.
i just heard about this show.... but its not streaming anywhere!!!! anyone know where i can stream it?

Alan Raymond has made the point that this
was not Reality Television as we know it today, but a documentary.
+wheelinthesky300 It also could be because reality TV sucks. This show didnt. It was very good. Hah!
I went to school SBHS with Delilah & we went to the same dance school. Big wow 🙄
Love the clothing. They really are an interesting family.
Bill Loud will be 96 years old in four days (22 January 2017).
@Mrs T He died in 2018, age 97.
Where can I see any of their documentaries, like an american family and the one from lance's finals days? PLEASE HELP!
I shouldn't think what I'm thinking, because Delilah is a year short of 18.
But I mean
-hubba hubba.
girls were naturally pretty back then.
Agreed❤.
I don't remember them at all?!?!
"An American Family" (1973) TV series - www.imdb.com/title/tt0211195/ = Documentary, Music, Reality-TV
Does anyone know if the entire families appearance exists?
This appearance showed an out gay man with the rest of his family, who accepted it. Quite uncommon in 1973.
Soo...
Thats good?
@AMEER-114- Some think so, others do not.

Lance needed a job.
Didn't hear from Michelle though?
That was pretty much the case on the show, too.
Now I remember why I didn't watch this show.
coz you had bitch class to get to?
@gaykid80 I agree with you, I think he knew alot about newest fashion because he was gay (not that there's anything wrong with that) Still for 1973 he had MTV look witch didn't start til 1980
Actually, MTV didn’t debut until August 1, 1981
...and MTV (incorrectly) called their "Real World" the first reality TV series. The Louds beat 'em by more than a decade!
@@lancerayburn4652 almost 2 decades actually.
I prefer Lance with long hair
I wonder if I'm related...
Are we sure Grant isn't the gay guy? And Delilah isn't a lesbian?
@OnlyMORMONsGo2Heaven are you one too?
An American Family was The Loud House...before there was The Loud House
Lance fronted 'the Mumps' band in the later 70s. They were ok, not particularly great.
@gaykid80 Wow...you're not kidding.
There funny :)

Plus, every other word is like...
@madmenfan1965
It’s funny how much more assertive the boys were than the girls. Definitely different today.
@MrLemmy2000 also he was in a punk band witch didn't care for the hippie look
Which, ffs
Ladies and Gentlemen..
The Dork family...
No, they were a group of nice kids. They cared for each other and accepted each other for who they were.
All of the guys are extremely effeminate and I don't know about Michelle because she didn't talk but Delilah seems the most masculine of the group.
Boring as heck.
