it's been 2 years, that's why i'm writing :-) are you still happy with the amp? I also really like the design, I don't like the Denon and Onkyo designs so much at the moment. Only the LCD could be higher resolution, I find it too retro...

The great thing about your review is how good the new wave of Onkyo receivers are. Having been a longtime Onkyo supporter since the early 90s, it’s amazing where the brand is now and where it almost was not long ago.

The Integra matchup to the Onkyo RZ 50 is the DRX 5.4. MSRP $2000. I wish Integra sent you one of those. Integra claims that they use better DAC's and power supply's for the DRX 5.4 then Onkyo on the RZ50. I would have like your take on that..

After waiting like 6 months for an rz50, I finally had the chance to grab a 5.4 integra, zero disappointment. It's excellent in every way. Running it with a 7.2.4 setup and zero need to go back to a theater any more. Dirac is no joke, holy cow does it make a difference.

    Andrew and Kristi,
    Thx for another important report.
I love the very practical approach.
    First your question, then mine.
    * Yours: I'd like to see the Integra with maybe 25-50w more and a full 7.2.4 capability.
    * Mine: I'm so glad you like this...almost... as much as the Onkyo TX-RZ50. My dilemma is I cannot find thr RZ50. Now you've previously suggested I focus on Onkyo or Integra because I want Sonos integration for our dedicated theater. SOO ... 🤪 since we're building a 7.2.4 system...
*** would a PowerAmp for my front speakers leave the rest of the power to be shared among the other speakers in the system??? My uneducated thought is that the front speakers need the most power and a gr8 PowerAmp would improve the theater performance and save power for the other speakers sharing the Integra main amp? 🤔
*** ALSO would doing so with Your preferred PowerAmp with the Integra make up for the Lack of Power compared to the RZ50?
    Cheers,
    Eric

After watching this review last year I decided to go with this avr instead of the onkyo based on price and Andrew saying there was no dif and it was well worth it. I'm a concert sound type.
I paired this with the emotiva xpa3, Polk s60s and a Polk 10in sub. I did in the beginning try the dirac but in the end it sounds amazing without the settings, just a dew EQ adjustments. I set the speakers to full and I hear everything youre supposed to. The Highs, mids and lows are awesome. Something I didn't get with my Marantz. I'm not much of a surround guy but its Ok.

My first and only experience with Integra was unfortunately a negative one. I purchased their 80.3 pre/pro and it's video board, which also had the network interface, ran blazing hot without a fan cooler on it. Even with the cooler, the board failed every two years and cost $450 plus shipping to replace. By the time the third board failed, the company had gone under and in anger and frustration, I recycled that piece of garbage. Within a week, my Onkyo TX-818 receiver lost its video/networking board. I tossed it as well. My pre-hdmi Pioneer Elite receiver that I purchased nearly 20 years ago is still running and is being used daily in my den without a hiccup.
If Integra/Onkyo is serious about making a comeback, they better make their gear FAR more reliable than the $4200 (+ $1500 in repairs) pile of junk I got saddled with. Oddly, both remotes failed within a day or two of each other as well. Mind you, I loved them while they worked but the simultaneous failure of two devices within days of each other really poisoned the well for me regarding the company.

I appreciate that you took the time to explain why you haven’t reviewed Anthem. I was beginning to wonder more than a little.
And, no, I’m not surprised Anthem hasn’t shipped you a review unit. From what I can tell, they do that far less readily than other manufacturers.

  • @adamtaylor9617
    @adamtaylor9617 2 ปีที่แล้ว

I was a huuuge integra fan for well over a decade.
I ran into a model ( I can't remember which) where the HDMI boards failed repeatedly and on a unit that was maybe only two years old. The repair and replacement costs on the board ( which they denied had an issue on this model even though it was the same board as many others they replaced for free )was 400.00 cdn.
After having used them exclusively since the late nineties, I moved on.
I really miss the sound signature, but I switched to Yamaha for the foreseeable future, I really hope things have changed there, but it soured me to the company.
    Great stuff as always guys.

I knew it was worth the wait and I was hoping they would bounce back. I will now have to wait for 7.4 or 1.4 patiently to replace my DTR 70.4 which was hard to replace. As DRX 5.2 series was relatively weaker and the amp was so much lighter and I had to send it back straight away.
I thought Denon 8500 would do that replacement, but I guess, I am used to 20+ years of listening to the sound signature of Onkyo/Integra that I got tired of playing with Audessey32 and I had to keep changing the settings for nearly every alternate track. Cant wait for 1.4 :)

I purchased one on 12th this month, what sold me was heard the demo of "Star Wars Battlefront II". It was setup on a 5.1.2 setup, the sound picture & video picture was spectacular. After hearing that demo, I was sold. I use old paradigm cinema wall speakers, nothing wrong with them. Infact, they brought them back to life. I have me room setup at 5.1.2, I mounded my father's hand me down cinema dipoles to my ceiling. And the end result was amazing. Did the DIRAC, setup everything just right. My 1st Integra receiver DTR 4.9, when I was 16 for Christmas in 2009. The previous Receiver was a Harmon/Kardon AVR 220 both were paired to a Bose Acoustimass 10 system. But after hearing my 1st Integra Receiver, I was a fan for life. After the Bose system I went to the Paradigm Cinema system that next year. And Paradigm with Integra is a perfect match in my opinion. Then I got a Integra DTR-20.4 in 2013 as a graduation present that was a step up with the setup mic with what receiver. And by the way, there is nothing wrong with those receivers. I decided to upgrade because I'm running more 4k content now. And for a while I was using the Optical Out on the TV. I still was able to keep the premium sound codecs going to the DTR-20.4. Unlike my dad's Yahama RX-A740, which he upgraded to the RX-A2A, Because of running more 4K content. I believe keeping the current look of them is to keep costs down and have more money to invest into the interior of the product. This is a superb AV Receiver, thank you for your review.

I’m on my 3rd Integra AVR, the DRX-5. I have been pleased with them other than a few small quirks and missing additions. The DRX-5 has only one USB input, and it is on the back. Very inconvenient. Powering Revell speakers in a 19x25 room. My previous model - 50.5 - had an issue where one of the boards would heat up and cause audio drop outs. I sent it in for repair, and Integra instead sent me the current model as a replacement. By the way… I like the classic Integra look and I hope they keep it always.

For those of us using older equipment and have no way of finding a listening room, how big of a difference are these newer receivers? How big a difference is atmos vs DTS? What makes these receivers worth $1,000 + ? etc. Unless a person has money to burn, should they keep older, good working equipment, or are sound advances in the last few years so good they should upgrade if they can?

I have the Integra DTC 9.8. It really does the job on movies/video (although no multichannel device in my experience can do 2-channel as well as a dedicated 2-channel device). Integra historically has been one of the champs (Pioneer Elite also in this camp) of bringing cutting-edge tech innovation to market along with audiophile-approved sonics. I'm glad they're back in the game! (Fun fact, the DTC 9.8 was one of the first units to accept a multichannel SACD stream natively - through an HDMI connection - and decode the stream onboard with full Audyssey room correction.)

Even after DIRAC, when listening to music I find myself turning the subwoofer trim up and then turning down when I watch movies. There does not seem to be a way to save individual trim levels based on the input selected. This is my biggest complaint thus far. Otherwise really like it so far.

I have an integra sv810 pro integrated amp that I used since the 90s. Several years ago, I decided to get something with hdmi and got a denon 3300. The drop in sound quality was pretty noticeable, but getting a dedicated power amp fixed most of that.
I got tired of the hdmi issues with the denon and ordered a drx3.4. Even with a dedicated power amp, the sound quality was much improved. Dirac sounds great, while I found audyssey unlistenable.
So far I've been very happy with the integra, though I haven't figured out how to stream lossless music from Amazon. It always defaults to aac.

Hi Andrew and Kristi. I have been watching your channel for a long time, I think I have seen the last dozens of videos a few times each and I think you are doing a very good job, you are objective and in the end you come with some subjective opinions, which I it seems very beneficial and normal for those of us who follow you.
However, I would have liked some of the products you have tested to include some Hegel amplifiers. I'm curious if you listened and how you would place them in your top. You also treat the subwoofers very little, which I think would be interesting to a lot of people ... I personally would love if you tested some REL or SVS subwoofers.
All the best, congratulations once again and good luck.

Hi Liviu, thanks for watching the channel! I'll look into Hegel. They've never reached out to us for a review which is partially why you have not seen them reviewed here. As for subwoofers, to be honest, nobody really watches those videos so it doesn't make much sense for us to do them. We are big fan of SVS subs. As for REL, while I'm sure they make a good product, you will never see their products on this channel.

For me it would be the 3.4 for sure just for the flexibility to allow for external amplification if I decided down the line to do that. Also with just over a pound more on the 3.4 I'm guessing it may use a either a beefier power supply and/or bigger capacitors. Good luck!

They aren't lying when they say a 5 year unconditional guarantee, either. I have a PB-2000 Pro SW and the amp went out, I had a replacement in 2 days. I lost the damn receipt. They didn't even sweat it. I haven't tried their Ultra speakers, but I'd love to, and plan on it. I plan on going from Klipsch to all SVS, actually. I'm just waiting on a chance to hear the Ultras. Have you tried comparable Klipsch speakers (price-point wise) vs your Ultras? I know the sound is different, and I'm not sure I'm liking the laser-like performance of Klipsch. Super sharp and precise. I may be the only person alive that can't make up my mind on Klipsch. It's typically love or hate. I know their support can't hold a candle to SVS. No one can for that matter, in my experience. I remember the first time I turned on my PB-2000-P, I watched Midway I believe. Just out of the box it felt like I was sitting on the ship through my chair. Just a slight hum of diesel engines. Unreal! Obviously, big fan of SVS! LoL

A lot of detail, but at very loud volumes, can be fatiguing. I like their sound but I don’t feel it’s a good “all-around” speaker.
I was referring to the SVS subwoofers. They are amazing, night and day difference from others I’ve tried. And their support…just unparalleled. So I’d like to hear the Ultras to see if they’re as good as their woofers and better than the Klipsch I have, as they do not mess around if you need help/replacement. Singer licking their lips, etc. but I take that as the speaker doing it’s job. I haven’t heard of the speakers you mention being bright, but it does come down to personal preference. Got headphone’s? Goto crutchfield and they have a simulator, although I’m not sure how accurate that is, but you can conpare them with klipsch to get an idea. Maybe purchase one or two to try. In good faith, if you really don’t like the ones you mentioned, send them back. Might cost 10-15 bucks. No more dealers in the city anymore other than Best Buy magnolia. They’ll understand. @Andrew Robinson What is your opinion of how this kind of Integra/Onkyo sounds in stereo mode versus what comes out of the AXR100 from Cambridge Audio? This contrast in sound makes me curious about what the engineers do when they make the default sound of these amplifiers. Thankfully, my Integra has a full customizable 15-band EQ, and while it may not sound just like an NAD or a CA AXR100, I can boost mids and bass and not feel like I'm getting aurally pulverized from the AXR100.
Did you ever make a video discussing the voice/vocal zoom feature and 15-band graphic EQ on these Integras/Onkyos? You would think that some audiophiles might appreciate these features if they are stuck in 2-channel world. 😀😉

To avoid the issues with unavailable older chips and the possibility of current chips being superceded, I'm going this route: McIntosh MX120 preamp, Anthem 525 power amp, with Miller & Kreisel speakers & sub. My Cambridge Audio BDP752 will provide the processing via analog cabling. I believe this will provide great sound without worrying about obsolescence. I had an Integra receiver a few years ago and while it sounded good the interface was so terrible that I stopped using it and gave it to a family member. Unfortunate then it developed a problem with an processing chip overheating. It turned out that the chip problem was pretty common on that model and we never successfully got repaired.
So, has Integra improved it’s design department or at least it’s quality control? Are they capable of making receivers that will last? How does it’s user interface compare to other brands?

When i saw the thumbnail i thought that you had just bought another piece of used gear, It looks so 90's. Nothing wrong with that

Another great video, thank you. I have a question. I live in a condo so I only have 3 channels and stream music. Would the Rotel receiver with a bluesound node be a solution just like a Roku box makes an old tv a smart tv.
    Thank you.

Thanks Andrew & Kristi! I have the 3.4 and love it! Do you let Dirac tweak the whole spectrum or do you lower the curtain to a certain Frequency or use a certain house curve? Also, how can I get the AVR to stop sending audio to my projector’s speaker?

    Great review.
I have an Integra prepro as my center/hub for over 10 years, but it has become a serious bottle neck on the video front. It can’t handle 4K. Sadly, it’s built like a tank and probably would last another 10 years.
What would be my best options to replace it as the prepro? This Integra, the RZ, or something else in this price range. The advantage of using the receivers is that their amps can drive the additional surrounds so no need to buy another multichannel amp.
    Thank you.

I can run the 4 k BD, Roku to the TV but the audio from the TV back to the Integra would be less than acceptable.
      Solution? Advice?

@@Echo-jg8is I agree whole heartedly, but don’t want to trigger the WAF (wife annoyance factor, because I barely passed the wife acceptance factor with the sub) for the family room. Thanks, though.

Hi Andrew, would you be able to compare these two receivers? I would like to buy one but first I'd love to get your input/feedback. Replying here is OK too if you prefer.

Hi Andrew, love your video! Thanks for all the amazing information you bring to us.
I do have a request if I may. My home has vaulted ceilings and I'm trying to find how to install ceiling speakers. But I'm not able to find any information how to set them up in this configuration. Have you ever done this?
    Thank in advance!!
