I stopped using Oxyclean after I accidentally left some bottles in a bucket of it for a week and left the white film on them. Had to use an acid wash to get rid of it. Now I use only PBW as no film and it lasts a long time for washing bottles. I make up a 15 gallon batch in a bucket and as long as I get most of the paper off the bottles, then the PBW lasts for several months for me to keep those bottles cycling through it. Good stuff Gash! Thanks for sharing again! Cheers!
Reminded me I had some soaking for a week and some of the glue from the labels did seem to clump up and stick to the sides, I'm hoping that none is inside the bottles, but thats stupid lol, because there would be. I had my first infected bottle in decades the other day and I think this could of been the cause.
Great vid mate. Sodium Percarbonate is the go. Cleans the brew equip, the bathroom everything. $10/kg from the brew shop... I use it everywhere at the rate of 30g/10L of water. Best thing about it is it's pure and can be used without rinsing afterwards . The bubbles are the oxygen being released, nothing to see there. Other products have additives so rinsing is required.
Iv just thrown an air lock for the very reason you've shown. Definitely be getting some of this. My flask is swine to clean as well. Cheers, absolutely brilliant and thank you for posting.
Good bid, although I'd recommend keeping brass out of it, or only very briefly washing it. I initially bought 1kg but was so sold I bought a 25kg sack in a bulk buy. PS don't let the better half find out how food it is otherwise you will have to buy it by the pallet!
Thanks for the comparison! I think after my PBW is gone, I'll be buying a tub of this also! There are videos on TH-cam for other uses of this around the house also. Decks, Windows, Stonework, Brick, Carpet. The uses are endless.
Good job on the video. I'll be re-sharing this to some of my brewing friends. I have been using Oxyclean as well, I just rinse out thoroughly after I am done. CheerZ
Hello, and thank you for this very helpful video. I have a couple of questions. Can I make a sodium percarbonate solution in a big vessel, say a fermenting bucket, and use it to clean all my bottles, in a matter of a few hours? Or will the effect wear off really quick, or diminish as I use it? I am currently using a similar, but slightly different stuff called sodium carbonate, which makes a basic solution with water that feels slippery to the fingers. It is slightly irritating to the skin, but you won't need much in 20 liters to clean brewing equipment. Does sodium percarbonate act the same way? Both these cheap and fantastic cleaners are becoming VERY difficult to find in Norway, where I live, and PBW is expensive. Cheers!
You can make a big solution of it, it doesnt stay active for very long though, about 6 hours. I think it works much better than sodium carbonate. It also makes things a little slippery but is rinsed easily. Thanks for watching. Cheers!
I went off this stuff early on as the smell catches your throat, not a great experience, but I think you have turned me back onto it Gash, after I saw the stuff eat through a dirty beer glass :)
This doesn't have an effect on my throat, Metabisulphite does though, that stuff takes your breath away, but its very good for many things, dechlorinates water, Sanitises and is used to stabilise beer and wine so it lasts longer, 99% of wine will have it in it. Cheers mate!
oh maybe that is what it was Metabisulphite, I had a part used bottle from my early days of brewing lying around and thought that was what I used, but it does say Percarbonate :)
hey gash. that airlock, looks like it still has those sharp moulding edges on it. some of those edges can be really sharp and tear up a grommet. or worse leave a little rubber in the brew. they scrape off real easy. cheers mate.
Recently, I bought a plate plate. I would like to know what is the suggested amount of mg/litre of pure Sodium Percarbonate and how must time I can leave it soaked in the chiller in a aluminum kettle to remove all the encrusted trub. In Brazil, we don´t have access to P.B.W. Also, if there are any of chemicals that we can use. If so, what are the names, quantities mg/litre and how much time it can be soaked in a aluminum kettle. Best Regards.
Bang on.. I can get it for about $38 for 5Kg (greenie enviro web stores sell it like it came out of a tree)... and it works a treat. Got to try it on some old silicon hoses next. Cheers
Hi Gash, can you tell what brand of oxypro bleach you are using in this video? Is industrial brand ok to use if I can't find the one you use? Thanks...
I just ordered a pure sodium percarbonate from hendrahardware online. Thank you for your quick reply. My first try at brewing, I did not get a response from the yeast. So hoping that using the right product for sanitising will give me a much better result. Wish me luck. Cheers, Geraldine
Its very good for some things, its what is in all the oxi active cleaners on the market. Give it a soak in hot water for an hour or so and then hang out in the sun. Its very good at dissolving organic matter. Cheers!
I add this stuff when needed, sugar soap, but I'd guess washing soda would probably do the same thing. Cheers! www.bunnings.com.au/tricleanium-1kg-all-purpose-all-purpose_p1670019
I reckon hot water is better for cleaning with it, however hot water will reduce the amount of time it will work as a sanitiser. So if using just as a sanitiser cold is probably better. Cheers!

No problems , cheers mate!

Good info Gash. We get 100% sodium percarbonate from trademe here in NZ for any kiwis looking for it. Cheers!
cheers mate! Good to know!
Thanks for the comparison! I think after my PBW is gone, I'll be buying a tub of this also! There are videos on TH-cam for other uses of this around the house also. Decks, Windows, Stonework, Brick, Carpet. The uses are endless.
yep thats true, as some one else said, don't let the wife know how good it is lol
Wow, I didn't know there was a generic alternative to oxiclean. That's good to know. I have OxiClean because I didn't know there was something better.
Cheers mate!
Nice one gash, definitely going to look out for some of that.
Cheers and thanks for watching!

Thanks for the heads up, but I have actually smoothed them down. Cheers!

yeah works good on silicon hoses, although the stains on the hot wort side are persistent. Cheers!
Hi Gash, can you tell what brand of oxypro bleach you are using in this video? Is industrial brand ok to use if I can't find the one you use? Thanks...
I use just standard 100% Sodium Percarbonate. Have you a link to the one you are talking about? Cheers!

Hello, Can it be used to remove stains on clothes ?
Yes :)
Thanks for reply. Have you tried it and is it really effective ?
Its very good for some things, its what is in all the oxi active cleaners on the market. Give it a soak in hot water for an hour or so and then hang out in the sun. Its very good at dissolving organic matter. Cheers!
Gash Slugg Thanks
ever consider adding Sodium Carbonate to the mix? If should increase the strength of the Sodium Percarbonate
I add this stuff when needed, sugar soap, but I'd guess washing soda would probably do the same thing. Cheers! www.bunnings.com.au/tricleanium-1kg-all-purpose-all-purpose_p1670019
On the bottles of it by cooper's etc it says to use cold water do you reckon warm or hot water works better?
I reckon hot water is better for cleaning with it, however hot water will reduce the amount of time it will work as a sanitiser. So if using just as a sanitiser cold is probably better. Cheers!
Great video, thanks from Texas.
Cheers Walt!
This is environmentally friendly. Oxi clean has additional chemicals in it.
