Watch this range test to see which wireless lavalier microphone system performs the best. My favorite is the RodeLink. It provides amazing digital audio quality but is half the price of the Sennheiser. The Azden kit is the cheapest but it also delivers the worst audio quality, specially at longer distances.

Having used both the Rode and Sennheiser; the battery life is quite different. With rechargeables, I'd get well over twice the battery life with the Sennheiser. It would be on for 10 hours and lose one bar of battery life. The Rode would go flat after about 3 or 4 hours. There is slightly better clarity with the Sennheiser mic, but the Rode has the price advantage. I also like the fact that you can see the battery life of the transmitter on the Rode receiver, plus having the un-mute button on the receiver is a nice feature. The Rode is also a bit easier to use, but larger and made of plastic. The Sennehiser has the better range. Either way, both are very good systems.
Sennheiser AVX-ME2 is best one now, i use 5 years this old Sennheiser and also i was happy with quality, cant wait to get new AVX ME2
I bought a Sennheiser kit about 7 years ago and still works great. I do wish the gain had an easy access dial or something rather than buried in the menu. (although mine looks like a different model than yours)
When I bought mine, it did come with a hotshoe mount, wind screen (I lost it), and a short adapter so that you could use a hand-held mic with a short XLR cable intead of the lav (never used that yet)

I can't believe you've actually used Azden...
Wind screens, hot shoe mount...even if the Sennheiser and Rode were the same price, still seems like you're getting a lot more value with the RodeLink.

Can you use two mics for the roadlink ? I want to use it on two people having conversations
The only problem you can really have with the RodeLink, is that the 2.4GhZ is the same frequency of the Wifi, so that can be a bit of a problem (maybe) if you're in a crowded wifi area, but since it changes like a router from channel to channel, shouldn't present any problem.
(my guess is that it works like any regular router we have at home, it goes on and off between 11 channels)
I guess that it could be nice to see in really complex places, like concrete offices or inside buildings halls/corridors!
Nice review. I would only suggest/request that you turn in a circle while you talk, so that we could hear what interference/noise is introduced by movement and having signal pass through your body. I wish you had clipped the transmitters behind your body--which is the typical use.

I don't agree with the review, it is clearly noticeable that the Sennheiser has better high frequency sensitivity.

I have the g3 and I can hear the output from the recorder, but I'm finding that the g3 is a little flatter. There's more bass in the rode, so I am going to get a rode this time. this will be my 4th mic. (2) G3 (1) NTG2 then (1) Rode Lav
Tom Antos, the camera recording this video was connected to the grid or on batteries?
The 60hz humming noise on the Azden equipment is typical on sound gear that is not well grounded. I find the noise coming from that equipment very unusual, do you know if there are more people complaining about that same noise?

Could you review the Saramonic UWMIC10 as well and see how it compares with them? And also the Azden PRO-XD as well which is meant to be a big improvement for Azden!

thanks for the great review. I am looking at the Rodelink. Did you run it through your field recorder (I ahve a H4). If so, how? Just through the 3.5mm jack? Or did you use an XLR adapter?
mrgoodburker I used the rodelink in this test through the XLR input using the Rode XLR adapter that designed specifically for that use. I have also used the Rodelink in the past with the 3.5mm jack on the H4n and it works great.
Is this just the ME2 capsule or the MeK2

Hi can you tell me if the Rode Film maker kit has Better Range compared to the G3, i got ht rode film maker and G3 and tried to check the range , the g3 had better range compared to the rode Link
I got the Azden used for $50 or else it's not at all worth the retail price. Mine doesn't sound this bad, it just has a lot of hiss that you can take out in post. The Rode is awesome, it's round cold shoe mount is dumb. It swivels no matter how tight you turn the plastic wheel. Sennheiser's are the kings, provided the government doesn't take and make illegal the frequency range after you drop big coin on them.
can you add a second mic and transmitter to thia system?

Here's the deal. I used mine, the pro model around a lot of back ground noise I probably never hear the crapy noises they can put out lol . kinda like ,oh your car is making a funny noise turn up the stereo .lol I ordered my Rode the news shooter. It will be here tomorrow. Cant wait to use it

The Azden hum sounds like a grounding problem to me.
Too much talking, while not demonstrating the sound coming from each mic. I just want to hear the sound comparison.
Sennheiser sounded the best outside out of the three. The first one was horrible and not worth using.
I just used the Sennheiser which I rented for a short film...and love the way it preformed and wanted to buy one.. but I didn't love the price. I'm definitely going with the Røde mic now. I may just buy two of them for that price! Thanks Tom for this video...greatly appreciate it.

Hey Tom, AZDEN have UHF series 310 LT and 330 LT (2 channel) and Pro-XD digi wire 2,4GHz. the question is, Why u compare G3 and rodelink with AZDEN WLX-PRO. Is not same dude, come on.... so please, if u want compare the stuff u can see "the price, the spesification etc"...

I bought this kit and eventually had problems with the microphone. You'll find that Rode use a non-standard jack-plug on this system and therefore can't use any other microphone with it. My kit is now useless.

Listening to Rode versus Sennheiser makes a huge difference in quality, I think - it is silver versus gold. If money wouldn't count, I'd definitely chose the Sennheiser system... But it counts... :D

Very nice! Just as informative and fluent as any other of your videos that I have ever watched.
I found Sennheiser's sound quality a little bit more open and readable in highs. Which counts. Not now of course, there are more other systems available, but has the sound of wireless kits become better? Don't think so.
But one thing - your intro: you are NOT Tom Antosz, you are Tom Antos! Why don't you speak put your name the original way ("s" in the end as "š" in Slavic languages)? There is nothing to be ashamed of, to the contrary. Hungarians are one of the pillars of the European culture :)
I say the Rode offers the best bang for the buck but the Sennheiser is the clear quality winner.
The Azden is a complete waste of time, but the most interesting thing to me about the other two was when you were 300 feet away there was a buzzing bug in the background. You couldn't hear it very well with the Rode, but it was very loud with the Sennheiser. I know the Sennheiser is omni-directional, but perhaps the Rode is unidirectional. The Sennheiser has a bit better high end (and probably has a slightly longer range), but your voice quality was almost exactly the same on both. I'd have to agree that the Rodelink is definitely the best deal for the money. Thanks for this review, it was exactly what I was looking for.
the sennheiser quality is very noticeable. Not sure if it justifies costing gold but is superior to the rode. If rode could provide just a bit better quality at the same price or lower, they will take this market that has been dominated by sennheiser.
I can't hear any quality difference between the Røde and the Sennheiser. The only thing is that the Røde seems to take a second or two after you switch it on before the sound is okay and noise free.
VideoCast714, I guess the reason you tend to like the senheiser more than the rode is due to the slightly higher frequency that the senheiser delivers. It makes it sound more clear. Lavalier mics are made to deliver high freq cause they are made to mostly be used under clothing. And clothing usually is eliminating the highs. Therefore they are made to deliver higher freq. I prefer the rode. I sounds more round and full. And I like the 2,4 MHz. Notice also that at the greatest distance, the rode was still delivering better signal. And I can always add a bit extra high freq on post production if I really want that.
yes, it's that crisp clarity that I think makes great audio for interviews. But that is more of a personal preference and you are right, I'm sure you can tweak and clean things up in post. I have not purchased either one but I'm thinking there is a big savings to be had by going with the rode. I also think digital will be the future. When I'm ready to make the purchase, I think I am going to go with the rode even though I prefer the test results from the Senheiser. From the feedback given by others, it looks like rode has come out with an awesome product and most likely will only keep improving it in the future...Cheers!
I will strongly advice you to go for the Røde. A more round mic. So many of the Røde products are so popular by both amateurs, middle and professionals. And it is not by luck! I have now had the Rødelink migselv for a few days and I'm so happy with it. Not that the Senheiser is worse or bad. But, the Røde is digital. Even if the Røde was the more expensive one, I will still go for the Røde.

I really wanted to see a important comparison between Sennheiser and RodeLink for the fact that we are talking about Digital and Analog transmission. Hence the deal breaker should not be the distance or buttons but the interference. Did you get a chance to check how they behave in a crowded environment with 100 to 200 ft distance like a party site, ball room conference, exhibitions, festival scenarios as that's where we should see many mobile phones really in action. I really wish you post the test results of the transmission issues. Thank you.

I like the RodeLink but ambient noise is bad in all except Sennheiser. Am I the only one hearing it?
I'm using the Rodelink's for a while now, and find the ambient noise (and mic noise itself) a bit to much sometimes. I'm really thinking of selling them and buying Sennheisers. Not sure if that'll be the AVX-ME2 or the EW 112-P G3. The Rodelink's are nice, very friendly priced, and good quality (for the price). But i don't think they can keep up with other pro and prosumer lavalier kits
Well, of course the Sennheisers have a Hot Shoe Mount, just optional... Audio Quality is even more transparent than Rode... But need to consider, that the Sennheiser are already on the market for years in opposite to the Rode and once they come up with a successor, I think it will blow the competitors our of the water... ;-) - Anyway, forgot to mention, that there´s also a huge difference in between how many systems can be run in paralell of the same manufacturer...
Mediacoustics Multimedia Sennheisers AVX system was already out. Basically their version of the rodelink

i like my rodelink filmmaker kit but it is noisy (( I also can use it only powered by batteries, USB power or AC adapter power is NOISY (I have tried many cables - cheap and expensive with no luck).

The Azden is crap. The Sennheiser and the RodeLink both have a noticable hiss.
The Rode has serious problems when used in areas full of wifi signal. Everyone should try the new Boya BY WFM12. Smaller than the Rode , great quality and not 2,4Ghz so no problem with wifi. And the price is abot 1/5 of the Rode!!! and it IS really good...

This would be a weird test but... this is something I thought of..
Test the three microphones like this :
1. Mic-Person follows actor walking while talking (Camera makes sure not to get them in shot; while the far shot gets them but in Post-they mask the Mic Person)
That's pretty much it. Would be interesting to see if the connection will still work or not.

Question can you hookup a Rodelink to a digital mixer. Like I have a 8 channel Roland VS 2000cd and from there I can record audio from there. I need like about 4 mics hook up at the same time.

What a brilliant product review and demo!...that you can’t get at a shop or in just a studio setting.
The Azden has massive feedback especially at nearer distances to the camera.
The Rode sounds perfect for all parts of your outside distance/blocking of line of sight tests.
The Sennheiser struggled a little on the furthest distance behind the buildings.

do you tested the AVX from Sennheiser? I would like to know the Pro/Cons between the Rode Link and the AVX System. I'm still in decition of what to buy... :)
If I were to do a review of these mics I would dump the Azden and replace it with a BOYA BY-WM5 or BY-WM6. They are much better than the Azden though not as good as the other two but passable for a budget minded person.

He should have compared it to Azden's 330 system. Azden has the Pro-XD out now, wouldn't mind seeing that comparison because it is new, but you really do need to compare apples to apples.

Sennheiser hands down for sound quality!! At all distances. Very crisp and clear. I'm glad ive been using that system for years now.

Would the only downside to the rodelink is that you can't have more than 1 transmitter at one time compared to the sennheiser?
