Just about every Newfie I've ever known was this "stereotype". The ones that didn't have the accent reverted back to their Newfie slang as soon as you put a few drinks in them.
They always call this a Newfie accent, but really, it's Acadian. People in Gaspé use a lot of the same phrases and sound similar. Not sure about NB and PEI but there are places outside newfoundland where this accent is common!
"you can say that again skipper" "Wha? I'm a third by, I'm a third, I keep tellin ya" This part gets a chuckle everytime. Coudn't tell ya how many times I got told off calling people skipper.
It's not just a stereotype. There are dozens of accents across Newfoundland and Labrador. People who try to lose their accents boggle my mind. Why would anyone from Atlantic Canada (or anywhere else for that matter) want to sound like someone from Toronto? Have some bloody pride.
True, the accents in NL can change form town to town. Even the sayings can be different - in some parts of NL they call the day before xmas eve "Tibbs Eve" and in other parts it's called "Tipsy Eve", for example. Bonavista Bay has what I would consider to be the "stereotypical" Newfie accent. I wish I could find an example of a French Newfie accent - unfortunately the few people who still have one are 70+ years old. St John's always had a milder accent, and most of the younger generation in St John's have a general Canadian accent now.
All my Aunts & Uncles do that gasp when saying yes. It’s truly a treasured dialect all to its own. Others have mentioned hearing Newfoundland having a argument is priceless. I absolutely agree. Love my Newfoundland family 🙏🏻
The reason why the actual NL curling team doesn't have an accent is that most of them aren't actually from NL, and Brad Gushue himself is from St Johns where people have either a mild accent or none at all. That being said, "Byrne" (Shaun Majumder) talks just like my father! LOL
Shaun came from an outport so I don't doubt he came up with most of the writing in this sketch. My missus comes from the southern shore and she was about 85% fluent on this one lol. I've just about had time to memorize the whole sketch which BTW is brilliant.
I love this, but it makes me sad to think we're losing our lingo over the years. My kids sound like mainlanders, even though they've lived in Newfoundland all their lives so far.
BYour accent is determined by where you grew up and also if your ancestors were Irish or English. In St.Johns accents were also affected by which part of town you came from. Thus many people from “away” may not consider the normal question “ Where are you from” as an introductory conversation beginning. Some CFA’s are even offended by what they think is too personal or bigoted a query.
Yes, I"ve noticed that people in Ontario who are newcomers to the country are really offended by questions about where they are from. Some are proud of it and want to show you their cuture and way of life. It depends. They really don't like it if you detect an accent or a different way of seeing things.
A lot of Newfoundlanders, for some reason, love the stereotype language. I grew up in St. John's and this sort of language didn't exist. However, we seem to like using it in front of mainlanders for some reason which escapes me. Every mainlander believes we all talk this way.
Oh, you are a townie!! Everyone does talk this way, just don't be so stuck up and try to talk like a mainlander. Be proud of your culture and where you came from.
mom was from glace bay I met a girl from new waterford here in Ontairo 40 years after mom came to Ontairo...She was mad i was dating a New waterford girl ..dems little tralups You best be stayin away from dem ...
I have lived in Newfoundland for almost 20 years and I have almost no idea what they were saying. I guess I will never fully understand Newfoundland lingo.
I grew up in Minnesota, and everyone not from the Upper Midwest thinks people in Minnesota all sound like "Fargo" rejects. I still have to tell people that no one talks like that unless they emigrated from Norway, and that was probably in the 1940s, so now no one really talks like someone in Fargo, doncha know?
Being of true nfld decent pre 1949 , Most of our accents have changed over the yrs , I'm gratefull our humor hasn't. This fair province hasn't changed its landscape. The people are changing though.
Now hunny I know You're from the Philippines ....But You do know that in Canada We speak French too yes? Hear have a listen to this video And see if you can understand it .....LOL
So funny! 22 Minutes makes a curling match look a little bit more like the usual war of words just before every stereotypical wrestling match instead eh? What would be so Newfie about that?
I come back to this video every couple of months for a good laugh. Too accurate 😂😂
"jam dat one in der as 'toight as da jeans on tha Preacher's woife, that sh'uld do'er"
Fookin' ded b'ys. Comedy GOLD!
heard a Newfie get mad once and yell lord thundering fuck..pissed myself I laughed so hard.
Andrew Mitchell o
Don't you mean "Lard Tunderin' Fuck"?
I like "Lard liftin jaysus"
Haha, Shaun Majumder, you owned this skit, eh b'y. "Who you 'longs to?" Loved it!
Just about every Newfie I've ever known was this "stereotype". The ones that didn't have the accent reverted back to their Newfie slang as soon as you put a few drinks in them.
you got that friggin right. me son
They always call this a Newfie accent, but really, it's Acadian. People in Gaspé use a lot of the same phrases and sound similar. Not sure about NB and PEI but there are places outside newfoundland where this accent is common!
TR Alberta except people in gaspe speak French
No, while we do have some French influence in NL the majority of our accent derives from southeast Ireland and the west country of England.
i can tell your not a newfie
Gentle Jesus in the garden. I'm dead by's.
hahahaha you made me laugh all over again.
One of the best sketches! Love 'em!
I love this. I wish we weren't losing our accent more with each generation.
"you can say that again skipper" "Wha? I'm a third by, I'm a third, I keep tellin ya"
This part gets a chuckle everytime. Coudn't tell ya how many times I got told off calling people skipper.
Actually, he would be a turd luh.
😂😂😂 this is just too good!!!
I like how she head faked, psyched out the opponent.
Love the inhale - "yups"!
It's not just a stereotype. There are dozens of accents across Newfoundland and Labrador. People who try to lose their accents boggle my mind. Why would anyone from Atlantic Canada (or anywhere else for that matter) want to sound like someone from Toronto? Have some bloody pride.
For me I just want to be taken seriously and not be treated like I'm uneducated.
Happens in England too. Northerners lose their accents to be taken seriously.

Kerosene Skies My hubby is from NB and he does that too. It’s called the “Gaelic Gasp”.

All my Aunts & Uncles do that gasp when saying yes. It’s truly a treasured dialect all to its own. Others have mentioned hearing Newfoundland having a argument is priceless. I absolutely agree. Love my Newfoundland family 🙏🏻

I love this, but it makes me sad to think we're losing our lingo over the years. My kids sound like mainlanders, even though they've lived in Newfoundland all their lives so far.
