Mykonos is a Greek island, part of the Cyclades, lying 150km from Athens. It has an area of 85.5 square kilometers (33.0 sq mi), it's composed mostly of granite and the terrain is very rocky with many areas eroded by the strong winds. It has around 10,000 inhabitants, most of whom live in the largest town, that is also known as Chora (or the town). Mykonos is known as "The Island of the Winds", due to the very strong winds that usually blow on the island. Tourism is the largest industry on the island, and Mykonos is known for its vibrant nightlife.
Mykonos was named after the son or grandson of the god Apollo, who according to mythology was the first ruler of the island. Mykonos was initially inhabited by Carians from Anatolia and became prosperous due to its proximity to Delos, a major trading and religious hub. Mykonos later became part of the Roman Empire then the Byzantine Empire. In the 14th century it was owned by Venice, then in the 16th century it was conquered by the Ottomans. In the 19th century it became part of the independent Kingdom of Greece.
Mykonos became popular with international tourists in the 1960s and 70s as a nude beach. In the 1980s it become a popular gay tourist destination. By the 2000s, Mykonos had become one of Greece's most expensive islands.
