There are still clones produced, and still firearms designed to take the magazines. Mec-Gar still makes magazines for them. The 59 was produced and released in 1971, but contrary to the video, that's not where it started. The 39 hit the market in 1955. There were DA/SA versions made, and DAO versions made. There were tactical versions, and precision competition versions, and Performance Center versions made in a variety of calibers. I love 3rd Gen Smiths. Very underrated, IMHO, and among the best semi-autos out there. And the unsung heroes of the line are the DAO models. If I could only have one semi-auto pistol, it would be... well... it would be my CZ 82. I've had that thing for nearly 30 years, and I'm taking it with me to my grave. BUT, if I could have two pistols, the other one would be my 4056. It has a fantastic, roughly 6-7lb trigger that's smoother than some of their double action revolvers. I still want to get its bigger brother, the 4046, as well.
I got an M and P9. With Hogue finger groove grips If you carry it, it never lets you forget. It's there because it's that heavy. With it 17 + 1 round magazine. It's a fine shooting gun but you'll know you got it if you carry it.

When I carried my old 3913, the safety was on. I was in my Beretta and Smith phase then, but as the years went on, lighter and smaller is better for carry, so my M&P Plus is what I carry.

Thanks for another great production. There are a number of advantages in versatility that a hammer fired pistol has that no striker fired pistol can attempt. For example, if one were required to make a precision shot on the first round, the ability to engage single action by simply cocking the hammer. That is not something striker pistols can do. Furthermore, the decocker feature of the Smith (and other hammer fired DA pistols like Sig and Baretta) offers the ability to make pistol utterly safe while striker fired pistols, again, cannot. It is important to understand that the Glock pistol which began this polymer striker fired pistol craze, was designed to be a military pistol. Thus, it was expected to be cheap to build; very easy to use and very resilient against weather. The Glock and similar pistols do that very well but that is not necessarily a good thing. While hammer fired pistols were designed to be versatile, reliable and rugged. On the other hand, striker pistols are utterly rugged and reliable but not as versatile or, very importantly, not as safe. I was there when a bunch of LEO began, in the 80s, seeing a huge increase in accidental discharges including self inflicted gunshot wounds all attributed to the then, new, Glocks. Newer is not always better. Glock and similar pistols are different, not better. Finally, in my opinion, Glocks are for "knuckleheads." Single action and double action pistols require actual competence.
Both of them are so amazing and both perfect for home defense I would say because 9 mm is a good caliber but the 5903 I would say remind me of the old cop shows and movies of the 80s and 90s with the nostalgia what is the m&p is definitely a good future for Smith & Wesson as well
For me, the 5900s are near perfect. Metal, hammer fired, smaller than some, good capacity, decocker, doesn’t waste time or money on sights and lights. What i’d change: grips, magazine disconnect, decocker-only option. And I could live with or work around both.
I had a 5903 10 years ago and sold it...regretably. I kept the 1006 and 645 at least. If the metal gun is as reliable and in nice condition i'll take it any day over the plastic even though I have those too.
I had an M&P 2.0 for a few months... traded it back in because the trigger felt "crunchy" and "gritty" on the pull. I was not comfortable or confident it wouldn't have a mechanical failure at the wrong time. 😢

My first duty pistol was a S&W 645 I had to carry a cement block on my left side to even out the weight.
Both of them are so amazing and both perfect for home defense I would say because 9 mm is a good caliber but the 5903 I would say remind me of the old cop shows and movies of the 80s and 90s with the nostalgia what is the m&p is definitely a good future for Smith & Wesson as well
Great video Scootch I love the old school smiths
I really enjoyed this past vs present video, thanks for sharing D!
For me, the 5900s are near perfect. Metal, hammer fired, smaller than some, good capacity, decocker, doesn’t waste time or money on sights and lights. What i’d change: grips, magazine disconnect, decocker-only option. And I could live with or work around both.
Being 69 I guess i'm old school, I prefer the 5903. But I do like the M&P 2 0.
I had a 5903 10 years ago and sold it...regretably. I kept the 1006 and 645 at least. If the metal gun is as reliable and in nice condition i'll take it any day over the plastic even though I have those too.
I got older school, model 915. Great gun!
Great choice for a compare / contrast review.
Haha you found the Lyman trigger gauge 😂
I think my M&P's are great, but I appreciate my 2nd and 3rd gen Smiths a whole lot more.
I have a few different models. The TSW series is one of my favorites. Also old 92fs and Sig 229s and 226 and H&K usps. Just good guns
I like the m and p but it doesn’t compare to the smith 3 gens at all . My all time favorite line of pistol. Have you ever fired a 4506?
Bring back the 4506! There are tons of the 9MM models out there. The 45 and 10 MM models are way less common.
2 grip extensions come with 2.0 compact for 17 round magazines. Not sure if you mentioned, maybe I missed it.
The Breaking bad gun! the Heidelberg special. 😂
Hiesenberg
Next up: CS9/40/45 vs M&P Shield
I have a 5906. It was my first 9mm many years ago. I love the weight because I don't care it.
Awesome guns and cool video thanks for sharing sootch00
I had an M&P 2.0 for a few months... traded it back in because the trigger felt "crunchy" and "gritty" on the pull. I was not comfortable or confident it wouldn't have a mechanical failure at the wrong time. 😢
Now u have to do the 45s old and new
59 series GenIV when ?? Cmon S&W you have a winner there
I'll stick with my 2 model 64s. Love my 64-3 4 inch and my 64-4 snub nose 38Special. I EDC them both daily. 😊
They had some of the old S&W’s at the gun show last weekend. They were police trade in tactical .40 doa models. They were pretty beat up and $ 349. I passed on them.
I wish they still made the old model S&W Semi-Autos, but with an aluminum frame.
I don’t understand why they stopped making the model 59 it’s the gun that brought them into the modern era and kept them in law enforcement. They could’ve at least do limited runs every few years or so.
Have a 5903 and a Gen 1 M&P with Apex action kit. Like the 5903 better. I wish I could get Trijicon HD sights for the 5903 though.
I want two so I can be like denzel in training day
💯💯😎😎
Those pistols that he used in the movie were 4506.
king kong didn't have anything on him
Should have used the aluminum framed 2.0 lol. I really loved the 59 series and i wish they still offered them. Had a 915 during the Clinton years and it’s the pistol i regret selling.
Both are AMAZING
Both are great pistols ❤❤❤
I have the Smith Wesson model 39 nickel wood grips. An yes it shoots great.
There's just something about ol school metal!
I'd take the Gen 3 all day. They need to bring them back.
