If this was something that 'luxury apartments' could be built on, it would have been knocked down and rebuilt immediately. Unfortunately, it is ONLY a main route between south and north, used by millions of taxpayers every year. Therefore, it remains closed for years and years and years, adding to MASSIVE DAILY congestion/pollution etc all West London and costing tens of millions in hours lost work every year!! Meanwhile, local govt is aguing about who should pay to repair it, and historians are arguing about how it should not be repaired in any way other than 19th century methods.
In summary, this bridge will be closed for the next few decades. Meanwhile, 'developing countries' (whom UK subsidises with Billions of pounds) are putting up bridges like this in a couple of months all over.

A very entertaining and informative film! Back in 2000 I was woken up by the sound of what turned out to be the attempt to blow up the bridge. (lived in W14 at the time).
What it really needs of course is a new bridge to take buses and other motor traffic, somewhere nearby, but it all depends on £££ and also finding somewhere that it would go (the area being mostly of historic value and much of it listed to within an inch of its life).

I've seen recently that they're looking to put in a temporary second level on the bridge so they can get cars back on!
