Usually during this era in history, when major cities and towns were captured they were sacked and stripped of everything that could be of value. Such a peaceful occupation of a city with the amount of wealth that Carthage possesed was virtually unprecedented.

      @McJibbin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

Ok that makes sense. I feel like Justinian and Belisarius wanted to send a message that they never really lost Carthage in the first place and so acted like they never left

@@McJibbin Indeed. They considered it a Roman province and treated it accordingly.

Most cities during these times were sacked by the attackers, plundering was common (and mostly expected i think) and rape was sadly not that rare either. Depends on the commander, the state of the attacking army, how hard the different peoples hate each other...

An auxiliary is a person or group that is recruited from outside who's purpose is to support/augment the strength of the regular army. A mercenary is a person employed to fight in an armed conflict who is not a member of the state or military group for which they are fighting and whose prime or sole motivation is private gain. So the two terms are in fact NOT interchangeable.

Belisarius's strategy during the Vandalic War can be compared to what Marshal Suchet did during the Peninsular War. A disciplined army that uses a hearts-and-minds strategy to win over the populace and make it that much easier to wage war.

In the context of the Book of Ecclesiastes, the author of the passage is clearly saying that life itself is the most futile thing ever, because, ultimately, no matter what we say, no matter what we do, no matter what we own, no matter what we think matters, nothing on Earth really matters at all; it all turns to dust in the end.

7:42 Ariansm main thing was that in their mind Jesus was not equal of the Father like the Trinitarians claimed, but that he was the inferior of the Father.
Edit. I know Jesus in Trinitary is referred to as Christ, just trying to keep the thing simple.

Vandals were a Germanic tribe closely affiliated to the famous Alemanni tribes that had plagued the Roman Rhine and Danuban frontier for centuries.
Belisarius' swift campaign in North Africa can be attributed to the fact that North Africa was still 'Roman', and the Vandals were a more recently entrenched ruling elite that was not yet popular among the Romano-African population that had lived under Roman rule for almost 500 years and who might still have perceived their Vandal overlords as Barbarians. This trend would be seen in Belisarius' further campaigns.

Vandals is where we get the term 'vandalism'. Although it was actually undeserved, it did stick ad infinitum

Goths are a Germanic Tribe (that later splits in Ostro and Visi).
But Vandals, Franks, etc. are all Germanic Tribes too, but they aren't Goths.

"Vanity of vanities, all is vanity" is about the pointlessness of human activity and how it doesn't really matter in the long run.

America is a continent... Not a country

    • @ayoa1173

Depends entirely on who you ask. Even within the land mass it's divisive. In the English speaking countries, the new world is two continents, North America and South America and the title of "American" and "America" is exclusively used for the United States of America. For example in Canada, referring to them as Americans is liable to receive a hostile reaction.
In Latin based language countries, they push back on the idea of "American" being used exclusively to refer to the US and are more likely to view the continent(s) as one with the north/south distinction being geography subdivision.

I can confirm that the Dardanelles (Gallipoli) have not disappeared from the map. That would've made it hard to explain how ANZAC troops were able to land there during WW1...

You were thinking of the Battle of Thapsus, in the same area, but south of the victory by Belisarius ... Caesar against Cato, Labienus etc. The Vandals spoke German, same as the Goths and Franks.

When Constantine established European Christianity, at the Council of Nicea, there were several major patriarchs, each of which had numerous bishops under them. Constantinople, Rome, Alexandria and Antioch were seats of major patriarchs. Technically, the Emperor on Constantinople was superior to those. Not ever detail of Christian theology had been settled, nor has it ever been!! The local bishops might be in disagreement with their superior the patriarch (Bishop Arius in Alexandria for example). Local laity might be in disagreement with their bishop (Donatists in Africa (Carthage), Pelagians in Britain, Semi-Pelagians in Gaul, Monophysites in Syria and Egypt. There are 41,000 different Christian denominations today, though some are affiliated with higher authority (Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican etc).

Same as Protestant...don't believe in the trinity, don't believe Mary was a virgin and believe that Jesus was killed on the hill...(odd that this is so widely believed by all christians yet it was not a catholic doctrine because it originally believed he was killed in the City)

I'm sorry but does your commentary add ANYthing of value to this? Why would anyone choose THIS over the original video? Is your prospective audience just the small percentage of people who accidentally click on your video right under the original and don't think any further?
