"1916" was written by Lemmy Kilmister of Motorhead after he saw a documentary on the battle of the Somme. The bus is a nod to the Motorhead song "No Sleep 'til Hammersmith" and the surviving members of Motorhead were featured in the video. This song is a fitting tribute to both Lemmy and all the soldiers who marched off to fight, and sometimes die, for their homelands. RIP, you are all appreciated and missed.
I'm surprised only one or two reactors out of dozens has spotted the Hammersmith bus.

Yeah, the two guys standing in the door opening at 4:48 are Mikke Dee and Phil Campbell, the drummer and the guitarist of Motörhead. The guy holding the picture of Lemmy is Eddie Rocha who was the tour manager of Motörhead and the current one for Sabaton.

Their Great War songs are arguably the most tearjerking. 1916 and Christmas Truce are almost bookends to each other.

WWI was originally called The Great War and the medals reflect this. Nobody expected to be plunged into a second world war after only 21 years of the end of the first one. Some of the trench warfare currently going on in Ukraine is of a similar nature.

Which immediately led to the "Cold War" which led to overthrows and "minor" wars all over. The Cold War is not over even after the Soviet Union fell.
WW1 was not the first World War. The 7 Years War deserved to called the real first World War.
there was one man named john maynard keynes that said the punishment was to harsh. The Treaty of Versailles led to World War II because its terms punished Germany harshly. The economy collapsed, the government lost power, the military was weak, and the Germans were angry. Because of these factors, Germans became loyal to Hitler and there was the perfect storm in Germany which caused World war II.
The ironic thing was they basically planted the seeds for a second war with the treaty of versi. You can't put the entire blame on one country, completely carve it up, humiliate it, strip it's army, and force it to pay reparations thereby destroying it's economy and expect nothing to happen. You are only sowing DEEP and LASTING hatred into that countries population! They basically gave funny mustache man the perfect blueprint to come to power.

A son survived Afghanistan, a grandson survived Iraq. Her first great-great grandson born 2022. 1 lifetime and she’s still here. “So long ago” is just an illusion

And here's my obligatory mention of a cool and more than just a little creepy detail for those who know:
Around the middle of the video the crowd/parade comes across a lovely early 20th century ecru-coloured convertible (as I've ben thought, obviously but I didn't see - thought it was a coupe...) that's standing abandoned in the middle of the street.
This is the car that *Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria* and his (morganatic) wife *Sophie Chotek, Duchess of Hohenberg* bled to death in on the 28th of June 1914 in Sarajevo, touching off *The Seminal Tragedy* a.k.a. *The July Crisis* which then obviously led to *The Great War* , sometimes referred to (and with good reason) as *The Apocalypse of the Old World.*
This one empty car in a very real sense is the *Pale Horse* that *Conquest* rode in on with *War and Pestilence and Hunger* in it's train.
I also feel it's a signifier of the level of knowledge that Sabaton by now has reached in dealing with historical matters, especially when compared to their initial albums.
It is also disturbing that to a large degree the current war of two, at least second rank, probably more in some cases, powers with all their tech and drones and gunship helicopters and air-launched cruise missiles has degenerated in a war of redundant trench lines once again... this is... unnerving to say the least.

hard to believe that every single person that left those towns...would never come back. and the most heartbreaking thing is that half of those of those who went were indeed kids easily between 14-16. for the record, this is singing about the FIRST battle of the somme. they sadly had a 2nd which was just as tragic and had just as many deaths.

Wow! The first two videos i see with you are where you watch Sabaton videos, and you cry in both. You brought me to tears as well, of course in tune with the songs. But hearing you sob in the backkground did bring a nother level of depth to these songs. Thankk you for bringing true emotions.
as a history buff and metal fan, i love Sabaton. Some songs are hard, some songs, like this are power ballads. You learn history and have a great time. Howver, this song, and some others never fail to get me to tears..
The cost of six mines was a generation, still children at the time. They weren't kidding in an older song they made...

My grandfather did exactly this he was born January 2nd 1900 on a small farm in Indiana he was the youngest of 9 brothers when war came calling on the 6th of April 1917 he and all his brothers signed up, he was one of 4 that returned and the only one who survived without injury, he stayed in the military till 1968 a military career 51 years long (he was a military chaplain for most of that time)
I can tell you a story about Bosnia. When we arrived and set up the war was well underway, our encounters were daily and the barrage was before we had air support in place. We pushed through during the nights just to attack from behind during the days and take out the snipers.
At one point I we were guarding a dwelling and we were invited inside for dinner, we had the food and she prepared it, over time we got to know each other fairly well. She had lived there in her grandparents house for quite some time and made a living in animal husbandry but the Serbs had taken all of them when they moved through before our response.
She had three kids and as we moved through the front line another group had come in from the east. They didn't take them prisoners, they set the house on fire and shot her kids, she remained inside.
When we returned we found the burned down house and the bodies. The last hope of decency was gone and from there on I didn't care. We pushed forward and prepared a way for others to follow in three hours, we painted every building used by the enemy and bunker areas since we now had air support. We took out every man that tried to escape and we showed no mercy after that.
I will never forget that day, I will never forgive the Serbs that today celebrate their genocidal maniacs as heroes and I know that one day the job will have to be finished. You can't have a nation of absolute murdering maniac fascists in a peaceful Europe. Putin will have to learn that and so will the Serbs.
I mean they are serbs, savages.
In my Opion every War is horrible, but WW1 and WW2 showed us how we had make peace and the direct aftereffects. We had to make peace, without bullying the losing side.

One of my favorite Swedish band. They have there own Festival in Falun every year. Falun is the town where Sabaton lives.

I also recommend you to listen to Motörheads version. Less more epic than this one but more naked and fragile. A true masterpiece by Lemmy but Sabatons version is absolutely fantastic in power and visuals! Thank you for your genuine reaction to this song.

The more I listen to Sabaton, the more I think of Sabaton as the current era of historical metal, like what Iron Maiden was once. Both hands have made some beautiful metal based on history.
1916 is no different.
What i really like about Sabaton is that they tell all sorts of stories and topics - for example "Father" tells the Story of Fritz Haber, who got the Nobel Price for the Haber-Bosch process
the mass production of ammonium nitrate was on one side a way to feed millions but on the other side was the perfect method for making explosives - not to speak about chemical weapons, to which Fritz Haber was not opposed to

Sabaton releasing this just before ANZAC day in Australia/NZ was just a punch in the guts. Was crying my eyes out before finishing it the first time, while holding my grandfathers medals from his WW2 service. Hell of a song! And so many emotions.

[I hope you'll forgive a pasted comment, it took me a while to write the first time.] I saw Sabaton perform this live in Leeds on the first night of the current tour, and it was so emotional. So let's raise a few glasses: to Birmingham, birthplace of metal; to Lemmy (RIP); to Sabaton; and to those who sacrificed so much. My wife's grandfather was one of those who lied about his age - he was only _14_ when he went to the Front! He got out alive, thanks to some amazing luck: he was wounded and taken to a field hospital, and his own father was being treated there at the same time. He swore a lot when he saw his son, then wrote to his wife back home explaining the situation. She in turn sent evidence of their boy's age to the War Office and they pulled him out. After he came home he never spoke to anyone in the family about his experiences. Greetings from South Yorkshire - Lest We Forget.

Any war regardless of where it occurs is totally devastating not only for those directly involved but to all witnessing it and for the whole of humanity as well.
Off the subject of music for a bit, I sincerely hope that one day you can find the time to watch a television 10 part miniseries titled "Band of Brothers" a 2001 American war drama miniseries based on historian Stephen E. Ambrose's 1992 non-fiction book of the same name. It was created by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, who also served as executive producers, and who had collaborated on the 1998 World War II film Saving Private Ryan.

My great uncle fought in the somme and he was also among the names of those who died in the somme. There’s a famous saying “they were lions lead by donkeys” and that came from the fact many of the generals on thr somme weren’t even good at their job and were only made generals because they were rich because back then there was a stigma that the rich were more smart than those who aren’t, which is completely bullshit because I know about poor people who were extremely intelligent and rich people who were extremely stupid.

Sabaton also has an award winning history channel that gives background to over 100 if their songs (not music award, academic, aimed at education of the public) .
Sabaton videos are often have dedictions and/or messages at the end, just like you saw here, perhaps not always but, watching to the very end is frequently well worth it.

I love this song because it tells the truth about War and does not glorify it like they often do in the USA. "And now there is nobody remembers our Names" that is the single worst fact about this, since you can be a Hero and still be irrelevant just 50 years later. This is the kind of music we should play in schools and let young Children interpret, letting them know that, in a different time, they might have been where they stood with no choice but to fight because of others decisions

Lemmy & Sabaton did a great job. I have a mate who Great Grand Dad fought at the Somme, and the horrors he saw. This song is also tough because how many soldiers who fought and died are remebered! all history recalls are the Generals not the Men/Women who fought and died!
As a historian I know the numbers. The Battle of the Somme was fought over 6 miles (9Km) and over a million young men lost their lives!

I lived in Scotland for a fair bit of time in a small village and when ever you looked that the list of names on the war memorial there was a name per house if not more. A whole village of people gone. Less we forget

It is absolutely impossible to imagine what the people back home went through. The vast majority of the men of a village of 15,000 go to war. Say that's an average of 7500 men.
5000 are killed in three hours of fighting.
And the town would learn all at once.

There's a say that the last words heard of a dying soldier is that for his mother - however if it's true or not - I completely understand why if that's the case, it doesn't make them any less of a human.

War sucks and the people that like war the least are the soldiers who fight in them, I have PTSD and listen to them for a good cry and I. Remembrance of my grandfather who fought 8 miles north of that cross, he was gassed which eventually took his life

Regardless of your opinion on WW1 we owe an unpayable debt to those who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
As Brits we take WW1 remembrance very seriously a few years back the Royal British Legion held a once in a lifetime event were thousands of people vaulenteered to dress in WW1 British military uniforms and in large groups wondered the UK on Buses, trains, street corners EVERYWHERE in complete silence and all they had were cards with a name, DoB and death it became very obvious that each person represented an individual who was killed in WW1 it was such a beautiful and almost Ghostly tribute to the fallen.

And I will say, ok, this song of theirs. Is actually fairly different, slower, doesn’t have all the same elements, to the same extent as their previous ones, I listed tot gem a lot. Earlier on, and yeah. Earlier…all the songs damn near the same but words, this one is better, they burnt me out by redoing basically same song like a 100 times before this. If they continue this trend of similar, but different, similar enough yiu know who without having to look at the video name/band. But different enough from the others that you don’t just burnout and not care anymore, then I can get back into them, I come from the age, and remote enough, cds too expensive for regular, middle class people, and we’re brand new, as a kid, we grew up on radio, cassettes, 8 track and at times records, that was the norm, only the ones with a good amount of money had CD players. DVD’s weren’t even a thing. Or close to it at all, by then. Bands number one sellers were cassettes and records, with 8 tracks as a third. And then CD’s, lol. I know plenty can relate…but even though the same bands were the tops of the radio, know of us really burnt out on them, sure some did, but most, no…newer bands/groups. Burning out on them is the norm, they last one or two decades then die for the most part. Old ones been going for 40-50 plus years…
You seem to like Sabaton, you should see when they sing in Swedish in Gothenburg in an ice hockey arena.
My favorite is "En livstid i krig" "A lifetime at war" with that strong message that is still relevant even though it is a war in the 17th century.

World War 1 was a stalemate for most of the war, some soldiers stayed in the same spot the entire war, or barely moved a few inches, the fighting was for every single inch of ground, it was brutal and bloody across the front lines, but the worst of the fighting was across the western front in the north
we tend to glorify it but there wasn't any glory in the first World War, or any War really
dont remember what Pals group it was think the Leeds or Accrington Pals lost so many of the men from that region that even to day the population has not recovered
Watching Sabaton's music videos hits quite hard when you're a Finnish man in your 30's.
Because I know that I will be part of the next chapters of those stories if Russia ever crosses the border. There's no glory in war, but if facing the atrocities of it is the only way to keep Finland safe, that is what I will have to take part in.
You should give Imminence a listen aswell they are from Sweden aswell and is a very good metal core band were the singer screams and plays violin at the same time they tell stories in their music videos aswell but not like these history ones tho. :D

I lied about my height to sign up for my war since weight was factored in. I was underweight. Slouched a bit to take an inch off. Age was fine, but i totally get the white lies when you're all in.

Yeah, why... Does the Leaders of some countries think it's a good idea to go to war against another country, or religious group.
They probably have some idea that "this is what we think the soldiers (and population) in the other country deserves". But there is never just one side of soldiers in a war, so while they are doing this to the "enemies" they are also doing it to their own soldiers who they have sent out to fight the war. / B.
300k dead for 6miles of groud comes out to 7.5inches per man. If you use the total casualty numbers for the battle it drops to just over 2inches... not that its not mind boggling enough before you break it down.
That's the price of a mile.
While I did the math after listening to that song, the math works out exactly the same for the some and pachendale(sp?) So it fits this as well.
@@A_Name_ 3rd Ypres or Passchendaele sad battle, but they won it, where Somme was just more of the same, in fact Hubert Gough 5th Army took part in both battles. But I was just being cheeky and referencing a Sabaton song.
@@ThumperE23 I wasn't comparing the actual battles just the death tolls and ground they both oddly enough were very similar in that regard

And nah they weren’t kids that fought. Got wounded. Died and won. To preserves the sadly diminished level of freedom we have now. They were men, through their actions and beliefs even if younger then me the day I signed up at 17. They did what they believed in. Seen it through. Even if that meant death, for what was right. Those, those are men.
