  • In this video i give a brief history about the Great Zimbabwe empire which eventually gave rise to the Mutapa State. The Great Zimbabwe is where the nation of Zimbabwe gets it's name and identity, it is the place where the Zimbabwe birds were discovered before they were looted to a different museums across the world, even Cecil John Rhodes ended up with one.

Hey, just want to say this was such an interesting video. Having grown up in Zimbabwe until the age of 16 I was shocked how little of this information I knew. Keep up the great work and thanks for these reminders of home. You can take the man out of Africa but you can never take the Africa out of the man :)

Nope not Xhosas.According to Venda Oral and written history the ancestors of Masingo carried the mbwedi rocks which are said to be similar to those that build great Zimbabwe and cross the Limpopo/Vhembe river to build a new kingdom(Dzata).it is said the kingdom split, because the first born who was suppose to takeover kingship rejected the position because he saw his brothers fighting for the kingship.heartbroken by the division within his family he rejected the throne and went further South.I might be mixing the narration, but we grew up reading about that history.

I beg to differ that it is Shona (even if the word is very recent too) who build Gt Zimbabwe. Yes the Shona could have named it Gt Zimbabwe but it is likely to have been constructed by the KaLanga before migrating to SA, compare with Mapungubwe. The Shonas never reverred Birds and Crocodiles. It is a long historical story .....Why couldn't the Shona keep building such?

"Madzimbabwe" is not a correct Shona word. Zimbabwe is simply these words "Zi" (huge), "imba" (house), and "bwe" (stone). So, its "huge house of stone". Its not grammatically correct in Shona to say: "madzimba". Also "zimba" is not plural but singular and so you cannot use "ma-" on house but on stones making up the house, which indicates plural. "zi-imba" is simply one huge house, hence the contraction, "zimbabwe".
