Needed a refresher on a box pouch and clicked on this link and almost cried when I saw Melanie. She was such a beautiful person, inside and out. Still cannot believe she is no longer with us. Thank you, Melanie, for sharing your talents with the world. ♥
This tutorial was the only box-pouch pattern for me! It was this video that hooked me into subscribing. Melanie will be missed. God be with her family forever. ❤️
I loved learning how to do these from you all those years ago. We’re exactly the same age and I have a sense of guilt that you don’t get to keep doing the things you love and being the warm and selfless person in this world. For people who never met you have travelled in my thoughts countless times, I pray for your family and friends to navigate their loss of you. Thank you
I've made hundreds of these over the last 6 or 7 years. This tutorial opened up a whole new side to my sewing and longarm quilting business. Melanie was a wonderful teacher. Miss her.
Hi There!!! I made one of these pouches and I can't believe I made it watching your tutorial.. When I usually make something I'm never pleased with it and after I made my pouch I was so proud of myself I cried. I was so excited and can't wait to make more!! Thank you so much for making this tutorial!! ❤️.
I always find my way back to your videos while searching for my next project. Your channel just spoke to me. I am glad you are no longer in pain, but you are greatly missed Melanie. I hope your family is well. ❤️
Good morning Melanie. I have been making your brilliant Box Pouches now for a few years, for my friends and family. I watched your Cancer update and it brought me to tears. I think that you are a lovely person and have sent you some healing thoughts and prayers, with a smile added. I am a 60+ year old man from England and am amazed at your strength and your will to be happy. Brilliant! You inspire me as always - guess what I'll be making this morning? Yep, a box pouch (for Christmas, for my daughter's friend). I'll let you know how I get on... It's a sunny morning here in England and I hope it is for you too today. x
I must have made almost a dozen of these by now. I love them so much. And I’ve just shown my two best friends how to make them, on their new sewing machines. Your instructions are so clear and easy. Thank you! Xx
I've just made this pouch for my daughters' stocking fillers thinking of Melanie and her family whilst making them. They are all in my thoughts at this Christmastime what a talented lady she was xxx
You were the most beautiful talented young lady. Thank you for all you have taught me. I'm still learning from you♡ Rest in peace Melanie♡. Prayers always to your family
I made this with a decorative placemat. I know that sounds weird but if you like to upcycle or are short on time it is a great alternative. The place that has a decorative side on the outside and a solid color on the inside. It is stiff enough that you don't have to do anything with interfacing. all you need is a place mat about 14x19 and a 14 inch zipper. there is no needing to sew a bottom seam all you need to do is bring the opposite end around to make your tube, and follow these directions from there.
Eva K Girl, me too! About give it another try and see how long my next bag is going to take... Measuring a few times, and doubting myself I think that took the longest and not having a walking foot.
Hi Melanie~I have done about 5 bags using your tutorial and made my daughters really happy. So, THANK YOU very much! I most proud and excited on the one I just finished. I added some quilt lines in white thread and some decorative leaves in copper. I also took it a couple steps further by making one side of the tab normal size (per your video) but the other side a tab size to hold and carry the bag. (since I wasn't boxing the bottom of this particular bag) I also added white bias tape to the inside seams which REALLY dressed it up. This bag is for my mother in law who hates me so I'm trying to win over her good graces! lol (not really but sort of) This bag should get me in good. Thank you for all you do for us!
This is the best video on this subject I could find on TH-cam. I did however decide to use one long piece (18"x 13") for the outer fabric and one piece for the lining. I wasn't really crazy about the seam down the middle of the inside or outside. other than that, great video!
i made it. i love your tutorials. i bought a sewing machine because of your tutorials. Im 45 yrs old and learning to sew and quilt all because of what you make. Your very easy to follow and very clear about the steps. Thank you so much.
Melanie you were such great teacher...very clear...I clicked on this video for a refresher to make the box pouch ...your voice, your smile is so lively...just to realise you are not there to make new videos...miss you so much Melanie
Very nice "box pouch" tutorial....wonderful craftsmanship and attention to detail (sooooo much better than another vid on same subject that I just saw this evening...OMG). Love the use of the "walking foot" on this application...and THANKS for demonstrating the fusible interfacing CORRECTLY (there are far too many videos showing the iron gliding back and forth...exactly what you DON'T want to do!!!). Only suggestion: I would not choose a "water soluble" pen for the markings on the corners of the bag....any amount of moisture may cause that color to bleed onto the fabric (and that may happen as well if the bag is washed). My preference would be for tailor's chalk or permanent ink markers...in either event I would cut on the inside of the ink line so that the line is detached anyway (along with all concerns LOL). Absolutely love your videos....very well presented...professional tone and presentation. Thanks for your work. ~~ RED ☮♡♫
Great video! I love that you sped up the sewing part and told us what we needed to know without a lot of blah, blah, blah. Most people would have made this a 20 minute video and bored me to tears.
A tip for you.... baste the tabs very close to the edge of the fabric. Then when you stitch the side seam your tab will stay perfectly aligned every time. The key is to have your basting stitch inside the 1/2 inch seam so it will not be seen.
I have just watched your tutorial and taken notes. I'm going to make one of these today as a storage box for my small collection of bag zippers. This is a good practice project for me, to get more confidence in sewing in zippers. Thank you.
Thank you for this tutorial! I made two of these and after the first one I decided to change the way the lining is sewn in according to the video. I think the seams on the inside need to be tucked in facing the other way, so that it looks neater, more professional looking and finished. So at the part where you saw the bottom of the bag together, I did not include the liner. Instead, I sewed the liner the other way and put the liner in afterwards, on the bottom so it would look neat and finished and cover up the inner seams. But thanks great video otherwise!
Can you explain how you lined this bag? I made two yesterday and though I LOVE this bag, I don't like the inside. I was trying to figure it out. Help???
Instead of zig-zagging the seam edges, I pressed them open and sewed a strip of matching fabric over the exposed seams. It looks pretty good, but your idea is better.
I think what she is saying is that she didn't sew outside and and the liner layers together. Instead i think she sewed the outside layer then she tucked the raw edges of the liner inward and straight stitched the seam shut so that the raw edges would not be visible.
Cette trousse a été ma première réalisation en couture à mes débuts. J'ai tellement visionné cette vidéo. Mille mercis Mélanie, où que tu sois, reste persuadée que tu "es" une belle personne.
Hi :o) I have just created my second bag (this time for my grandma) and I've mastered it! The first one was a bit wonky, but this one I kinda just understood it!! So pleased with it! I used a bumble bee fabric on the front and flowers on the inside. Thank you for such a great step-by-step, easy to follow YT video :o)
I made one of these for my grown son using a soft wool. He loves it. His brother was envious, so I'm making one for him for Christmas. Thanks for this easy-to-follow, thorough tutorial.
Wow. I know you probably hear this all the time.......but your craftsmanship is just perfect. Every step you sewed was beautiful. You have inspired me to try making this adorable bag. Your instructions are very clear. Thank you.
My biggest issue with sewing is that my pieces are never perfectly the same size when I am cutting without a pattern. Yours are perfect! What is your secret?
I use a quilting ruler and a rotary cutter - for projects I make frequently, I invest in a clear plexiglas cutting template. For example, I make cat hammocks for our local shelter. I have an 18" clear template for the fiberfill lining and a 19" template for the 19" outside fabric. When I use these templates to rotary-cut the pieces so precisely, sewing results in a perfect item every time.
I just made two box pouches following these instructions, it didn't take long at all. Since I don't have a walking foot I added an extra inch to clean up the wonky sides. Worked perfectly. RIP Melanie, you are greatly missed.
After listening to Mel's videos and the her Bio, I feel like I know her personally. Thank you Mel 🙂 for all you have contributed and still contribute as you rest well. Blessing to your family 🙏
I love love love this box pouch. Made several as prizes for a travel-themed bridal shower in 2018. Now I'm making Christmas gifts in 2020. Selecting coordinating fabrics was a blast. Such a satisfying sewing project!
I made one of these I cut my fabric to 14 1/2" x 10 1/2" and my box pouch came out to be 6 1/2" long x 4" wide not very big at all but nice and very easy hers was 13 1/2" x 9 1/2", so the one she has in her hand at begging of video had to be made a lot bigger than the measurements she gave? But I will be making a few for Christmas gifts for the men in my family, in camo
Patty Ison I was wondering about that too. What was the depth of the pouch you did at 14.5x10.5? I am planning to make a dozen of these as a gift and good I ran into your comment before I bought the materials. I have to get a longer zipper then if I want a larger pouch than your output at 6.5x4"? Thanks!
It was approximately 3" deep, well I wanted to make these and give them out for Christmas but they we're to small, so the next one I made I used a whole fat quarter and it's perfect, it came out 12" long 6" wide and 4" deep perfect for travelers or truckers,, I wish I could send you a pic but I'm not sure how? Hope this helps
Almost 3 1/2 years after this was posted- I made one last night and another tonight. The first was to the exact dimensions and came out fine, but I wanted to be able to pack my hair and body wash container in it, and it was just a tad snug. I simply added 2 inches to make the 13 inch side 15, but 14 would have done it. Everything else was the same dimensions given and it came out great! Read some posts saying directions were not clear---and I disagree- they were fine, but it was my head that was off- in other words, I had difficulty with the concept of some of the steps, but after repeated watching and then doing- it wasn't the instructions at all- just took me time to understand--both demonstration and verbal instructions were dead on- thanks Melanie!
Thanks so much, instead of using the tabs I’m adding a shoulder strap to this so I can use it as a dog walking bag. I searched everywhere fir the right size bag and eventually it found yours. I’m a beginner so this was so easy to make but such a professional make xx
Hello! I know this video is pretty old, but I was wondering if you could explain how to size your bag for your needs. I would like to make a bag that I can easily pop into and out of my diaper bag, that will hold a few cloth diapers and wipes and that kind of fun stuff! But I'm just not sure how to figure out what size my pieces of fabric should be!
Please tell me how to add a inside pocket or divider. I wanted to make a set bag with this tutorial but I want the wet diapers separate from the clean dry ones
Put the pockets onto the fabric pieces before you do the zipper. I made my pockets with two layers of material then sewing it to the fabric (outside or inside) leaving the top open. You can do it :) x
I just want to say thank you, I can not sew much I can make a square pillow and that is about it but I watched your video and while it did take me a couple of hours I made one of these bags and I am so happy, you just don't even know! Thank you for making this tutorial !!
I love that your video is short. So straight to the point. Well explained and to make it even better my pouch was perfect. Thanks for sharing your knowledge 😊
This was so much fun to make! I’m a beginner sewer and this tutorial was pretty easy to follow. I did have a bit of trouble going over the zipper with all the layers of fabric, but I got through it! I love my pouch ❤️ thank you!
Thank you so much for your tutorial. I haven't started yet but now I know what to do without spending a lot of time trying to figure things out. Your video is so clear, unlike another video I found with horrible music I had to mute. Talking us through what you are doing is so much more helpful!
My son wanted something to carry his Cars car collection, I told him I have just the pattern!! I FINALLY got to make this pattern!! Very good instruction video, simple, thank you for sharing!
Love it, love it. I have now made 2 of them, but one thing I changed was that I sew down the bottom seam on the inside, before doing the sides. thanks great video.
Holy crap. Just made my first one step by step as I watched and rewound the video over a couple times. Can't wait to send you some pictures. And make more for my daughter, step daughters and nieces. 🤗 Thanks Mel.
RIP. This was the first tutorial i watched from Melanie. So devastating her passing so early in her life. Hope the jab didn't have anything to do with it (blood clots or heart probs). Praying for family and friends. ❤ ❤
I'm back again after many years to relearn how to make this bag. I miss you, I hope your family is doing well. It's still very heartbreaking to believe that you're really gone from here. We'll meet when it's time. I must thank you for all you taught me and happiness you brought. Hugs
Ooh ooh!!! A great tip I just taught myself as to turning that pull tab inside out...stick a DARNING needle thru n hook on inside about a third or half the way n pull thru!! I tried pulling the whole tab thru at once but works better n faster doing halves or thirds at a time!! Love this tut Melanie...thank you!
Omg!! it is so cute I like this 3 pouches purple, pink and greenish blue. I have given one pouch to my elder sister she was so suprised. I take this pouch to school my all the friends even teachers love the pouch. One pouch I keep my colours and another school supplies like pencils, pens, sticky notes etc. thank you so much.
Thank you so much for the written instructions, I can take it upstairs and make a Box Pouch. Yes I have a tablet or a computer upstairs but the written instructions are right there next to my sewing machine. Sew Much Fun!
Oh my gosh! I am so excited to try this out!! After about 3-5 years I finally got my sewing machine working!! I was looking through a ton of sewing videos and remember about your channel! I have been watching you for a long time but only your knitting/crocheting videos because my sewing machine wasn't working! Now I am so excited to watch all your sewing diys! Thank you soo much! I love you and your videos!
I just made my FIRST fabric pouch using your tutorial and it came out great! I surprised myself for sure. Thank you so much for the great instructions!
This video is great! I used this technique to make a pouch to fit a 7 day pillbox. I only made one modification (other than size): I put fabric tabs at both ends of the zipper so that I didn’t have to sew over zipper teeth. Thank you so much. I wish I had taken a photo.
I must give credit where credit is due, I have watched multiple videos on zippered bags, but i must say that yours is the best. you give perfect instructions, and we don't have to watch you sew as you speed it up. very professional. I have subscribed and wait to see more. thank you.
Melanie, I started sewing a few months ago to learn how to make hammocks and tarps for hiking in the Smokies. You videos have been very helpful for a beginner. You make it simple to learn. I have made your Kleenex holder and several makeup bags. I am going to make this square bag in camo for Christmas. I let you know if it was a hit with my sons and son in laws! Thanks for you help and videos!
Hi Melanie - thanks for a clear, easy-to-follow video. I want to make some gifts for friends and I like the size of this zippered pouch to show off some of the cute quilting fabric and stitching.
This is a fabulous tutorial; quick and very easy to follow. I have just made one in leopard/black lining for my elder daughter; and am just about to start on one for my youngest (both of whom are probably older than you!). Thank you so very much x
Any chance you could help me? Trying to figure out what I did wrong. All of the seams are showing in the interior of bag...is that normal? Doesn't look very pretty inside- maybe because I am a beginner sewer?
I have made these now in many sizes. I found that the perfect size to carry inside my purse as a small make up bag was a 9" x12" piece of fabric, one piece of fleece and another one for the lining, one zipper and I'm good!
just made this bag it's was so easy and fun all around an enjoyable project. this tutorial it easy to understand. the bag I made will house a complete sewing kit for my daughter
just watched your tutorial for the first time and have to say enjoyed it very much. What a so cute wee pouch bag be a great make up bag for a gift. So guess what everyone I know will get for Christmas this year. Your instruction are very easy and clear to understand. And wow your seams are perfectly straight when you sew. VERY GOOD TUTORIAL THANKS
Melanie is forever loved and missed. 2024 and im still watching some of her videos. She was an excellent teacher.❤
Her spirit lives on through us as we continue to create through her. An angel is now in heaven.
Sorry, what happened with her😢

I'm so sad to know she passed. God bless her family to keep her here to teach. She is so very missed 😢
I'm new here. Just came across this video now. How did she pass on? Sending love to her family xx
She was diagnosed with cancer. I read about it on google…I still watch her videos because she was so good at them….GODS BLESSINGS on her family 🙏🏻🙏🏻
I decided to make these for all the women in my family for Christmas! I’ve made five of them so far and I LOVE how they’ve turned out! Thank you!

Good morning Melanie. I have been making your brilliant Box Pouches now for a few years, for my friends and family.
I watched your Cancer update and it brought me to tears.

I've just made this pouch for my daughters' stocking fillers thinking of Melanie and her family whilst making them. They are all in my thoughts at this Christmastime what a talented lady she was xxx
This tutorial rocks because it shows you how to finish the box corners so the inside looks just as nice as the outside. Thank you for sharing.
No. Inside does not look as nice as outside.
Sorry for your loss. Melanie was very talented. Thank you for keeping her video's up. Learning lots from them.
You were the most beautiful talented young lady.

Eva K Girl, me too! About give it another try and see how long my next bag is going to take... Measuring a few times, and doubting myself I think that took the longest and not having a walking foot.
Time will reduce as you keep making more. I've made 4 already and I think it has been a 10 minute reduction. Lol
@@lillulu79 I’ve never needed a walking foot to make these. It’s not necessary.

Hello. I am new to sewing and your tutorials are very helpful :) Do you wash and dry the fabric before you do projects like these?
I just made two box pouches following these instructions, it didn't take long at all. Since I don't have a walking foot I added an extra inch to clean up the wonky sides.
Worked perfectly. RIP Melanie, you are greatly missed.
Great tutorial! Perfect sized bag and concise instructions! Thank you!!!! Became a subscriber :)

Hi Melanie. If you have a random size you are making, how do you know/calculate the measurements to the corners (what makes the box)?
Yes, I was wondering the same!
There is an easy calculator here: twelvebees.blogspot.com/2015/05/how-to-make-any-size-boxy-zipper-pouch.html
hiii very nice

Have you made one of these yet? Are you wanting it to be a box pouch or a pouch in general?

best boxed tutorial ever! I dont know how many videos I watched before finding this gem! great explanations and soooo easy! Thank you!!
Your personality is very positive, thank you for taking the time to teach us what you know🙏
I just want to say thank you, I can not sew much I can make a square pillow and that is about it but I watched your video and while it did take me a couple of hours I made one of these bags and I am so happy, you just don't even know!
I'm a novice sewer, and just made one of these...it was so easy to follow your tutorial! Thanks so much, off to buy more fabric to make more!!! 😁
I will make this one. It’s so user friendly. I still can’t believe you’re gone. You were the best!
Hugs
I did it! It was so easy with your help. I made a few mistakes with the zipper but I corrected it. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks as always. I came back to watch it again and really appreciate it.
I like. Looks like the serged edges make it so much easier. Gonna make one for wife and one for daughter.
Absolutely the easiest pattern I've ever done! Thank you.
Of course I needed to watch a video on a box bag. Love making stuff with you Melanie. You are sooo missed!! 😢😢
Omg!! it is so cute I like this 3 pouches purple, pink and greenish blue.
I love you and your videos!
pinkwishbeauty woohoo, that's great! Have so much fun!
I seem to have come to the party late, but I made this bag this afternoon and am really pleased with it. Thanks Melanie.
Thank you for you channel. I'm learning so much about sewing. It's nice to be able to back up and re watch to make sure I'm doing things correctly.
I have subscribed and wait to see more. thank you.
Thank you. I love how you explain it so clear and make everything so simple to do.
I finally made one this box bag.... came out really good! Will add the picture soon! LOVE IT!!!
thanks your instructions are very clear .I made my own pouch by fallowing your stepwise instruction
Thank you for a very good demonstration and clear instructions.
I've watched so many videos on making these bags and they Make them very hard. This video I have recommended on every channel I've watched
You are brilliant, I have learnt so much from your videos. They are so easy to follow. Thank you.
I LOVE these pouches. They are SO easy!
just watched your tutorial for the first time and have to say enjoyed it very much. What a so cute wee pouch bag be a great make up bag for a gift. So guess what everyone I know will get for Christmas this year. Your instruction are very easy and clear to understand. And wow your seams are perfectly straight when you sew.
