I built a Goodtime Custom a year ago that is practically this exact banjo. My banjo instructor thinks it is awesome for a sub-pro level banjo, with a metal tone ring and really good quality tone.

I bought one of these awhile back as a travel alternative to my Deering John Hartford model. It's a fun banjo to play, and sounds really good. I love the sound (and weight!) of the natural wood over metal tone rings, so it's a perfect travel and practice banjo for me. Great bang for the buck!!!

I like to cover death metal songs on banjo. I absolutely NEED an open back version of this for claw hammer. Does such a thing exist??

    One more thing...
Why do banjo players always think they have to play as fast as they can..???
It is ok to pick much slower to let the banjo sing out it's natural tone....plus singing along with playing is the perfect sound most of the time.
That makes for GREAT STORY TELLING..boys
    But who am I anyways..
I am just a guy who loves to hear a great story.
Looking forward to doing some great story telling myself in the next 40 yrs, GOD WILLING

If all banjo pickers thought like you, bluegrass and a good portion of old time dance music wouldn't exist.

Hey there, actually I can tell you this guy is likely not playing anywhere near as fast as he can. Banjo can be played super fast pretty easily with a little practice. This really isn't that fast of a speed. A lot of times people complain at me for playing too fast but I'm never going anywhere near as fast as I can. Man, you'd REALLY hate it if we actually played as fast as we can, it would sound terrible😂

@@MasonCroneMusic Hello mason, we have talked before.
      This is brother Harvey.
Sometimes I do say what's on my mind.
I ask Alot of questions and have Alot of knowledge of hoards of different subjects in my mind.
I have Alot of great ideas, some have already been done..
      LOL.
I am thinking of buying a open back or the Recording King R-35 and put nylon strings on it..
I was thinking, I would get a traditional sound and the sound would still be focused away from me.. might even make it sound louder but with the warmer sound..
      Just a thought..
      You really get around.
I have seen comments from you all over UTUBE channels..
Maybe before Christmas, I will buy me a banjo.
The fun part will be to learn how to set it up & then tune it..
Anyway, fast playing is good and fun.. I am finding that I like the story telling with the old time country gospel, hymns & songs sound.. so I am going to need to learn a little bit of different ways to play. It's all good...
I don't even know if I will be worth a plug nickel...
But I do know that old tyme country gospel hymns & songs would be real nice to lead worship at small group Bible studies.
There is a real big need for sml group worship leaders in all towns..So I need to keep learning the acoustic guitar 🎸 I have now and possibly get that banjo too.. LOL
Hope everything is going good for you and your family. God bless you and your family.
Plus I need to visit your channel,
      MASON CRONE MUSIC.
I will go over there now.
      From Harvey.

The banjo sounds great! His picking is exquisite, but I wonder if anyone else sees the irony of a blackgrass banjo playing an ode to the racist south.

I don't really ... to produce a social climate where racist remarks, including jokes or songs or whatever, can be uttered without any racist intent or effect whatever, is a sincerely great achievement ... I'm not aware of any racist basis for the song 'Dear Old Dixie' anyway, but if there is, I think it's a wonderful thing that we are able to think abstractly and separate the original racist intent from the music itself ...

@@isaacbeen2087 Hi Isaac. You make an excellent point. Moving past any racist intent even if it unintentional would be ideal. I wish I knew what the answer is, and as a white male I really don’t get to decide what’s offensive or not or for how long. How do we separate southern pride and romanticism from slavery and racism? Just the word Dixie I understand to be derived from confederate money with was known as Dix. Maybe it’s enough to just remember the dark past and make sure it never happens again. Thanks again for helping me think this through.

that's quite alright ... I just have a particular distaste for this kind of thinking, especially as a gay person ... many of my peers have often called me racist, sexist, and very often homophobic (leading to a kind of Orwellian double-think), which is always predicted on utter ridiculousness ... as far as I'm concerned, we're all individuals and shouldn't be understood through the arbitrarily delineated groups identities that we fall into (race, gender-identity, sexual-orientation) ... I say arbitrarily, what is so unimportant as height or hair colour or ugliness or any number of infinite ways in which people can organise themselves? it is by no means obvious that race, gender-identity, sexual-orientation are the most important categories that the human race can be divided into ... it is abhorrent to me that I have a better chance of being able to express my opinion on certain issues and not be made into a pariah because I can always fall back on a rhetorical question to the effect of 'well, I'm gay, so I can't be homophobic, can I?', or 'well, I have been in relationships with transgender people, so I can't be transphobic, can I?' ... / at any rate, it's a good thing that we didn't cause any revile amongst one another ... I'm not even sure why I commented, I suppose I feel I have a duty to queer the pitch against ideas that, in my view, have the potential to harm a great many people if taken to an extreme, not that you're particularly extreme ... there is so much for both of us still to say ... thanks for engaging with me, jonallenrizzo!
