I do this all the time count threads and if not right on test drive I use a set of toe plates and get it dead on. I've gotten to the point I can align a car with just my longacre bubble gauge and my toe plates old or modern car, it does take some practice but it's very satisfying doing it yourself. And now that Sears closed not many places in New Jersey know how to align a classic car.
They say misery loves company, so I feel your pain with the metric size wrenches. When working with SAE it's grab and go and I rarely grab the wrong size, with metric for me, it's test and repeat. Never seen that much play on a tie-rod end. had some problems with stabilizer-bars like that but safety-wise it's really not the same. Great video! Keep up the good work. Anyway. you will have to do an alignment, you can get close but it's a guessing game. What i do is put the car on the lift, mark the alignment on the wall of my garage using a laser beam on the hub, when I put the new one in I align it with the markings on the wall. That's not perfect either but really close. Fact is all tie-rod ends are cut differently, meaning the threat is not starting at the same point. That way you may be 1/2 a full turn off which makes a huge difference.
NIce job! I checked my Camry last week and I get a small wobble when I have the tire up on the jack. Just the left side but I'll replace both tire rod ends since I have to have alignment anyway.
If it's in the rack and pinion, I would have to see if there is movement at the wheel and the steering wheel does not move. See what part of the assembly has movement. The outer is easy to see.
Good idea to go over a checklist in your head at the end, making sure everything is tight. Question: If you were to replace the lower ball joint at the same time, would you do it first or the tie rod first in order to keep the geometry as close to the original as possible for alignment?
Great video I'll be attempting this repair very soon cause I checked and noticed the passenger side wheel has that wobble so I'm pretty sure it's the tie rod
13:35 when I tried to torque my castle nut to 30 lb/ft (what it calls for), it stripped the threads. Now I chaulked that up to cheap chinese parts and got new ones from NAPA today, but is it possible I did something wrong? Don't want to ruin these new parts.
I haven’t checked the torque specs myself. But cheaper parts are usually the problem. Make sure the nut was the one made for that part. I have seen mismatched parts as well.

Repaired a few front ends....and that's the worst tie rod play I've ever seen! When doing replacement I use spray paint and measurements to realign components. Usually good enough to get to alignment without scuffing tread off.
Ummm is it dangerous to drive with that much play cause that's how much play I got on my car at the moment but I don't feel it much while driving cause I'm driving in the city and not hwy driving these days

I changed all suspension parts on my lexus es350. It is essentially the same as a Camry.

You should put what year the car is in your entitle or description so people do not have to watch to see if it’s their car or not.
It’s the same process for just about any vehicle with rack and pinion steering.
