@@irunovermountains I have one. It feels pretty robust. With the highest gps accuracy (1 sec) it consumes 14-15% per hour. And your can switch between 1 sec and 10 sec. There is also a titanium version. Of course S7 is not competitor for Fenix series. They are way different.
It depends on the marathon. Most marathons in the US and Europe tend to keep the same course each year, or, invert the direction each year (every other year).

So: - New feature useful in less than 5% of your runs (stick to map), at best, and only on road (not trail) - Nothing really new with the HR sensor, hopefully better than the S7/S9 where it's really bad and inconsistent - New sensor that isn't really useful (Pulse O2) - Wireless updates (3+ years late) - Smaller screen, meh - Ambient lite sensor, about time (5+ years late) - Another change of charging cables, thank you for the environment (never had issues with the S9) - SuuntoPlus is still one by one, and cannot be enabled by default Yeah, will pass. Appreciate the very fair review, where you don't try to oversell the watch, just speak about the facts (although a pros/cons comparison with the S9 could have been nice). @@threedeafears Cool thank you for the details! Just so we're clear, I'm not saying the S9 peaks is a bad watch, just not worth the upgrade for someone who as the S9. As per your listing, I think I would recommend the Garmin 945. I don't think you need the LTE which is more suited for multi day adventures, and that the Fenix would just be throwing money, so you can stick with the non LTE 945 which is on sale right now. An alternative is the Polar Vantage V2, which has about the same features (although the Garmin platform is recognized has being better). Third option is the Coros Apex. A lot cheaper, but doesn't come with as much features as the two previous one, so would recommend if you want something simpler.
@@charlesoutthere thanks man! btw i tried Suunto 9 Peak at the shop, and it is crazy how big the bezel is compared to the size of the watch. How is that possible in 2021? And it pissed me off more how much Suunto tries to hide that in its ads / marketing.
I bought the Suunto 9 last year and lost the power lead. I was promised a replacement by Suunto and then after 15 communications with them (most of which were not replied to) I had to give up and buy it new. Los of apologies and no action- really poor for a $900 watch. Really poor service has coloured my judgement on Suunto
Depends on what you need from your tool, no? As a random 40yo distance runner training with Stryd pod I want support for the pod, intervals and autolaps. Spartan Ultra has been my choice since 2016, now switched to 9 Peak after found one in the 2nd hand market. Awesome watch. Not a very "smart watch" and I don't wear it 24/7 but even the displaying of emails, texts and phone calls is useful if my phone is in the backpack or pocket - and yes, I already had that feature with SSU. But of course it's personal preference as it is with anything these days which watch suits you... some want structured workouts, Spotify etc. and then you'll probably want to consider Apple/Garmin/Coros ecosystem.
@@liljemark1 Agreed. I see Garmins packed with features but when I've tested Instinct Solar it appears that despite great GPS tracking much of other stuff which looks so nice on paper were just unreliable. Sleep tracking kick off whenever I just lying on sofa and watching movies (apple watch much better here). I saw YT movies complaining for Fenix 6 pace accuracy. Apple watch have better HR sensor etc. etc. and Fenix is not cheap toy, but I guess it have better marketing and more positions in specs. ;) I still would like to see better UI performance and maps in Suunto watches. I was getting double notifications sometimes on old Travers Alpha, I hope Suunto improved this in newer watches as it was annoying (getting ~10 notifications in a row for messages that was already notified in the past). All in all there is no one gold solution! All the best guys!
Well from a material perspective it's on the level of a Fenix 6 Sapphire Titanium, wich is - after 3 years on 700$/€ and started with 850. But the Lifecycle of the Fenix 6 is near by an end with speculations since beginning of 2020 that Garmin will bring a successor to the market, this may be considered when comparing thoose 2 prices. And Coros with the Vertix, wich was also released 2 years ago, is also by 600-700 - and even without movescout, Suunto has a better Ecosystem than Coros. So I think the price is really ok as a manufacurer price of a completly new product, it will drop a few month after launch... I guess.
Have been wearing the Suunto 9 Baro for almost 2 years now, before that had a Garmin Fenix 3. Suunto's operating system and user interface is just obsolete. Not only it is badly designed, but it also fails to utilize the full capabilities of the hardware on the watch. Example of that is the screen, although it has much better resolution even compared to newer Garmin watches, just put the two side by side and you will know what I mean. The watch faces are static and wrongly designed, meaning they fail to be info-dominant, it's like somebody was lazy to design the full thing and stopped somewhere there... While the whole interface, charts, bars, widgets, all lack multicolor execution. These are just to name some, others are lack of gesture controlled illumination, lack of over the air updates, lack of automatic activity start stop. Just go to Garmin, believe me.
@@threedeafears only Garmin, the rest are yet to prove themselves... Which model is up to your budget and use purpose, if I had the money to change I would buy Fenix 6x, and if had money to spend completely carefree, I would buy the Marq Aviator on top, for more casual days :-)
Cold weather expedition users (like myself) will not buy this watch, because of the magnetic charging. It will 100% slip off during charging in my sleeping bag at night.
Suunto lost me at Movescount removal. It seems Suunto is reluctant to add things that made tha Ambit name relevan.. Each iteration seems farther away from what it usted to be. @@Dcrainmaker but if it's not accurate to the time and distance you've actually ran and only a estimatation of I what you should be running based off a made course is it really that useful? There are lots of features that should have been implemented before that. Just seems this watch is a generation behind but with a great design.
@@Minotauro79 But it snaps you to the course, that's the point - including your distance and pace. So if you're running a marathon, it'll correctly snap you to your location on the course, rather than a bad GPS data point running through Manhatten. Don't get me wrong, Suunto is clearly far behind at this point, but this is - by itself - a cool feature for specific purposes.
I think 9 Peak is more like Fenix 6S and if you like something that look more beefy and rugged like Fenix 6X but from Suunto offer then look rather to Suunto 9 Baro.
So let's sum it up - except blood saturation there is nothing new. What a shame suunto! I stick with my old spartan ultra until it wears out and buy something new, but not from Suunto.
You are right, unfortunately - I miss features like the map (on my Fenix 6x Pro) - that's really useful . I did like the style of Suunto for long time and I used my Ambit 3 peak with passion. As soon as I heard "peak" in a new model I thought yeah... but, hmmmm. Other features like Solar on Garmin are nice, but not the main point, but maps. And they don't need to be huge like Garmin ones, but lets assume a top map 300-500 km around you - that would be perfect even for a longer hike or bike tour and will not take that much memory.

@@liljemark1 Thanks for the suggestion. I am going to contact Suunto support today. I took pictures. I am resetting it now hoping it behaves better. Otherwise, I am going to return it. Maybe get the cheaper Suunto 9 Baro (features are practically identical I think sans wired sw update, but bigger screen, etc.). 🤪
@@liljemark1 In Garmin it heavily rely on min and max HR -> HR zones. And people can set whatever they "believe" is true and then the watch outputs trainings that it "believe" as to be true... :D HR zones are changing with your SpO2max (probably most quickly for beginners or "returners" to fitness) and I guess not much people are updating their min/max HR and zones. It's pity there is no way that Garmin watches can calibrate this values itself... I agree that the best solution is to listen to your body instead of watch suggestions, I'd rather consider them as inspiration :) All the best!
@@JamesChung2000 Watch temp will be always higher as it gets heat from your body. I believe it is there if you like to measure temp by removing it for some time to check the ambient temp eg. campsite with no LTE/mobile coverage where you don't get weather forecasts etc.
Please let us know how the situation develops with your support request, this HR readings are concerning. All the best!
@@tomasz5274 Got the Garmin fenix 6X Sapphire. OMG. The difference in quality, accuracy, features and apps ecosystem are night and day. I am on day 2 with a 10K run. I'm a delighted customer. #wow
Any first thoughts about the new hr sensors? Had to give away my suunto 9 because it't isn't just there with the hr accuracy. And wont place an order for this before somebody tells me its way more precise 😅😅
So HR sensor is important but it has to be OHR, not belt? Ok...
I hope they will bring a new version of the Suunto 5.
good video! any experience with open water swimming?
Yeah, first swim today. Not good. Sent details to Suunto to sort out.
@@Dcrainmaker thank you very much for your superfast answer. I´ll have to keep waiting for a watch capable to track accurately the open water swimming.
Suunto has very nice watches but that giant bezel is a bumper, for me,taking up so much from the visible screen!! We need a larger visible screen#
+1
I wont be surprised they are hiding there big GPS antenna :) Although no indication so far it have greater accuracy than the rest of lot :D Other possibility is getting bigger battery with smaller screen == better battery life. IMHO Suunto watches have nicer and more minimalistic UI vs other too colourful ones packed with 100 info on one screen. But I’d like to see greater responsiveness in their UI and maps! All the best!
Hello Dc Rainmaker please can you do a OPEN WATER swim with your new suunto 9 peak? i'm planning to buy a new suunto 9 peak and i want to know if its worth it. i have a friend using a suunto 7-9 the gps is quite messy. so i wanna know the suunto 9 peak
Yup, I just did a swim this past Friday with it, here's the results: www.dcrainmaker.com/2021/07/a-few-random-things-i-did-this-weekend-2.html
@@Dcrainmaker thank you
I always thought Suunto was Chinese. Knowing that is Finnish, is a different story now.
Good video.
Parent company is Chinese so you weren't far off.
Most important : can we get finally fully customized intervals ?
Not yet...
I agree I waiting since the beginning of my Spartan ultra 🤣
@@Dcrainmaker
Maybe it should be mentioned during the review? This is the basic functionality for everyone ..
@@qrajr Yeah, this video was more about the new features (rather than all the things it was missing from over the years).
please DC rainmaker can you please make a open water test for Suunto 9 peak before i will buy thanks
is the battery life comparable to Suunto 9 Baro?
Great video, a lot of precise and relevant informations as always
Just one thing : It seems to me that there's a typo in the time line "Better App intergration" instead of integration. I'm not a native speaker so I might be mistaken.
When oh when will Suunto release a Renix 6 competitor.... I need TOPO maps :'(
Do you know any other watches with topo?
Suunto 7 ?
@@rooldaa I don't think that's a rugged ultra/mountain running watch. Maybe I'm wrong?
@@irunovermountains I have one. It feels pretty robust. With the highest gps accuracy (1 sec) it consumes 14-15% per hour. And your can switch between 1 sec and 10 sec. There is also a titanium version. Of course S7 is not competitor for Fenix series. They are way different.
However marathon changes route yearly, and not always sharing their gpx file.
It depends on the marathon. Most marathons in the US and Europe tend to keep the same course each year, or, invert the direction each year (every other year).
How is the map and direction indicators for trail running. I want a watch that can give me accurate directions and show me proper headings and map info for trail runs. Thanks. Maybe you can do a particular video explaining in detail the running modes ?
no map, just breadcumb navigation on watch
I am predicting people freaking about "snap" doping on strava segments. i.e. cutting corners but having the run snap to route and get faster times.
2:57 tough life it is LOL
12:59 - what is this strange noise both in video and audio? 🧐
Maybe 5G mobile is downloading email? ;)
Such a big bezel makes it look like a watch from 5 years ago...
Zwift Watopia beer?!
No more "flat tire" display too.
Indeed!
Is it possible to save Music on the Suunto like on Garmin 945?
No, unfortunately not.
@@Dcrainmaker thanks
Is Chinese in the language setting?
Pasta DE CECCO! W l'Italia!
Anyone know how the wireless music playback works on this? Looking to leave the phone and just bring watch and Bluetooth pods. Thanks!
No music on/from watch. If this is a must for you then you may look into Garmin / Apple offer.
Why is it not solar, now that would have made it a must for me, as it is I will stick with Garmin
So:
- New feature useful in less than 5% of your runs (stick to map), at best, and only on road (not trail)
- Nothing really new with the HR sensor, hopefully better than the S7/S9 where it's really bad and inconsistent
- New sensor that isn't really useful (Pulse O2)
- Wireless updates (3+ years late)
- Smaller screen, meh
- Ambient lite sensor, about time (5+ years late)
- Another change of charging cables, thank you for the environment (never had issues with the S9)
- SuuntoPlus is still one by one, and cannot be enabled by default
Yeah, will pass. Appreciate the very fair review, where you don't try to oversell the watch, just speak about the facts (although a pros/cons comparison with the S9 could have been nice).
It's a good update from Suunto, just at least 18 to 24 moths late. Won't get people back to / switch to Suunto, and the ones who are thinking about leaving will likely do it.
interesting thoughts, what do you recommend instead? :) im new to the market and was thinking to get it actually
@@threedeafears it depends a lot on your needs. Are you a road runner? Trail runner? Searching for something simple that will track your activities, or something more complex with workout suggestions and more data analysis? What is your budget?
@@charlesoutthere im not a serious athlete but im undergoing rehab from a football injury and need something to help me measure improvements (endurance, drills, etc). i never thought about buying smart watches in my life had it not been for the football injury. What i care about is that it is something i can wear all day (not put on and take off after exercise), and I do not have to think about battery often, and that it is not bulky..
would be nice also with some other general health measurements as well such as calories, sleep etc.
budget is virtually unlimited. thanks man!
Worth to buy?
If you like it
who saw that red spider !!!! spider myte!!!!!
So disappointing to see Suunto has fallen so far behind. Even with a new watch it lacks several features the completion has had for a few years 🤦🏼♂️
What features are you talking about?
All the best guys!
oh man, they had so much time to add maps to catch up and still couldn't do it
So it's 600-700 dollars, but every feature it added either brought it up to the level of other watches, or was still in beta and didn't work well.
I guess.
@@romanliebl1914 Yes. It is a gorgeous piece of hardware. I think I'll wait a few months and see what happens to the price!
Just go to Garmin, believe me.
interesting thoughts, what do you recommend instead? :) im new to the market and was thinking to get it actually
Things like climbing pro in garmin are the things i would expect Suunto to have, but they are still Trying to catch up... Cmon you couldnt even match polar or koros battery life in full gps... Whatever ill stick to my a3peak till it dies and then probably in some 10 years they'll catch up....
The battery seems too short.
Much longer run than apple watch! ;) Considering size i think it's really reasonable battery life (Fenix 6S it's not so slim).
No personalized intervals, no ANT+, no maps, no web ... same watch with 4 bullshit
Sub bahasa indonesia pleassssss
Same software like in Suunto9Baro so it is a Joke in 2021.
No suunto footprint at all...pass, will stick to my 9 ambassador.
Snap to route is a feature that seems absolutely useless unless you're just a Suunto person trying to justify their existence.
It's super useful in city marathons and races with a known course. It's less useful in day-to-day workouts, or trail running.
I waited for new Suunto watches, but design is ugly. Guess i switch to Garmin Phoenix.
I think 9 Peak is more like Fenix 6S and if you like something that look more beefy and rugged like Fenix 6X but from Suunto offer then look rather to Suunto 9 Baro.
Second!
So let's sum it up - except blood saturation there is nothing new. What a shame suunto! I stick with my old spartan ultra until it wears out and buy something new, but not from Suunto.
The snap to route is new, and pretty big.
@@Dcrainmaker it is a nice feature I agree.
@@Dcrainmaker I agree, but "snap to route" is a software feature, so that's nothing unique for a new watch, they could give it to the 9Baro as well.
@@martinseitlinger2649 I was also thinking today about this snap to route (while running 😊) - this looks to me like software thing - they should be able to put in in all watches with their environment
