In my younger years, my buddy and I would put on “The Heart of Saturday Night, go out bar hopping, shooting pool, and so on until closing time. Then we would put on the “Ghosts of Saturday Night’, and head over to the Pantry, the Atomic Café, Gorky’s Café, or some other after hours joint for breakfast at 2:30 AM.
Many years ago I danced with a beautiful young British lass in a cafe in a small Mexican beach town while this song wafted through the air. One of the most beautiful moments of my life. Today I am 53 years old, a broken down man in a dead end life. Reduced to constant worry and buried in debt, I hear this song again and am washed over by the sad beauty of it all. What happened to that young man so full of life? Was it really me?
I'm an old guy and have followed this magic musician since he started. I like real wordsmiths who tell stories real people can relate to. So far, it seems at least 53 are still waiting for their lives to start. Hope it does.
Tom would sometimes appear on 4th St. LB at a bar that was frequented by Bukowski and the two of them would have a drink together. If you were lucky, and you were down at the end of the bar in the shadows, you could hear faint echos of songs to come. This was one of them. It will be there, long after Tom, the bar, & I, have gone. Enjoy.
Tom wen my dad passed away u helped me get through the darkest times of my life with tunes like hold on in the Hart of saterday nigh And hold on just ho I get to meet or see u live and if I don't thanks envy way u made things better For me hope to see u live but if I don't thanks just the same love ur blues and the rest a light in my life cheers kid in th e Hart of Every night
Carol, lovely story. I DID see Tom Waits in a very small venue, I think it was a conference room of a Holiday Inn, seriously. He is very funny and quite sad, wish I could have known him as a friend. Not because of his fame but for his soul. It was the 70's, a time of many great songs and writers. Believe it or not, Leon Red Bone was the headliner lol. What a great time just listening.
This guy, Tom Waits, he's always out to make me cry. And most of the time I can't stop myself from doing just that, listening to him. He simply gets to close to the emotional parts of me.
I hope I’m not insulting you by suggesting Nighthawks At The Diner. If you like this the records full of this banter. Full of great piano songs too. I’m guessing you know this but in case you don’t or maybe someone may read this and go there. Either way it’s a fantastic record that needs to be discovered. Nuff said.
Ive been listening to this routine for many years...Nighthawks at the diner i think...first time seein it. Wonderful stories, songs, poetry, and humor: thank you Tom Waits: Long may you run!
Every now and than I stop by to listen to mr. Waits, and every time he touches my heart again and again. A great poet, who knows how to paint life with his his music and lyrics........
This is a song which will last forever. Mr Waits is one of the best composer/poets of our time; well any time really. If you love this song check out the version by Shawn Colvin.
I got to know his music when I was about 23 years of age, I am 53 now and it seems so long ago (it is ofcourse.....:-)) , but it still touches my heart every time I listen to mr. Waits...
I wish I coulda seen him around this stage of his life. His music is like no others, some songs of his I'll cry like a bitch some makes me laugh and smile. The U.S. has Tom waits Canada has Leonard Cohen
Thank god for this. You can't love truly love an artists music until you understand the artist. I've never understood Tom Waits, but have spent hours youtubing him tonight. I never knew his sense of humour so such a big part of his music and his act. I liked him before, I now like him a little bit more. If I keep learning, one day I'll love him.
Yes, I agree, so many good songs on one album is just amazing. I love them all, but this song is just stepping out and somehown it touches me deep into my soul......
Ol' Tom. Saw him live in Washington DC in, Good Lord, must'a been 1973. He was drunk, of course, but performed this song. Man, I was hooked, then and there. I been hooked ever since.
Listen. Tom Waits was singing the Heart of Saturday Night, she held the remote control in her hand, bumped up the volume, danced in her glory and sang along with Tom, makes it kind of quiver down in the core 'cause you're dreamin' of them Saturdays that came before and now you're stumblin' you're stumblin' onto the heart of Saturday night...
I was pretty surprised to find out that Tom Waits is a native of Los Angeles, that's the last place i ever would have expected him to hail from... I'd be honored if some Waits fans would take a listen to my acoustic keyboard & vocal TH-cam performance of THE HEART OF SATURDAY NIGHT in tribute to the boss. Live acoustic with no digital enhancements. Peace out and stay safe.
Tom if ya wanna find the heart of Saturday night she's in Austin, Texas....she's got every beat, oh man and she gets every one right and she'll get ya home on time...she's cruisin' down the boulevard...brighter than any headlight...but she ain't nothin' like your father's Oldsmobile..she'll be takin' flight and she'll be takin' the heart of Saturday night...
@copperegrets She clutched the remote control against her heart and she sang so damn loud the windows rattled, she thought her aching heart would explode into its own passionate melody. She swayed her hips slow and sweet... this was her virginal toast to life. She tumbled all the way down into a well filled with midnight magnolias and again sang along with Tom…
Amazing lyricist… Well you gassed her up Behind the wheel With your arm around your sweet one In your Oldsmobile Barrelin' down the boulevard You're looking for the heart of Saturday night And you got paid on Friday And your pockets are jinglin' And you see the lights You get all tinglin' cause you're cruisin' with a six And you're looking for the heart of Saturday night Then you comb your hair Shave your face Tryin' to wipe out ev'ry trace All the other days In the week you know that this'll be the Saturday You're reachin' your peak Stoppin' on the red You're goin' on the green 'Cause tonight'll be like nothin' You've ever seen And you're barrelin' down the boulevard Lookin' for the heart of Saturday night Tell me is the crack of the pool balls, neon buzzin'? Telephone's ringin', it's your second cousin Is it the barmaid that's smilin' from the corner of her eye? Magic of the melancholy tear in your eye Makes it kind of quiver down in the core 'Cause you're dreamin' of them Saturdays that came before And now you're stumblin' You're stumblin' onto the heart of Saturday night Well you gassed her up And you're behind the wheel With your arm around your sweet one In your Oldsmobile Barrellin' down the boulevard You're lookin' for the heart of Saturday night Is this the crack of the pool balls, neon buzzin'? Telephone's ringin', it's your second cousin And the barmaid is smilin' from the corner of her eye Magic of the melancholy tear in your eye Makes it kind of special down in the core And you're dreamin' of them Saturdays that came before It's found you stumblin' Stumblin' onto the heart of Saturday night And you're stumblin' Stumblin' onto the heart of Saturday night Mhm, mhm
this is so righteous, every girl in the audience must have wet themselves during the monologue just FYI, Madeleine Peyroux does this very proud, she infuses it with all the romance, longing and sweetness it deserves...
seems like tom was attempting to do it a little differently, more offbeat. although not as "pretty" as some other versions it works. miss that double bass slap that's on the album cut, that was tasty too. what a unique nichancanbenawuser. only one tom i'm still waitsing. wasting? adelante
The entire album..."The Heart of Saturday Night"...is simply beautiful.

Every now and than I stop by to listen to mr. Waits, and every time he touches my heart again and again. A great poet, who knows how to paint life with his his music and lyrics........
It doesn't get any better than this. There's something about the way Waits plays guitar--like he discovered this morning and mastered it in one day.
yeah tuning it might have been an option though
Well spoken Dan

greatest gig indeed - if i remember rite he played 3 mights there & then. mite still have an old dusty tape of the concert lyin around ..
Well, you gassed her up behind the wheel
With your arm around your sweet one in your Oldsmobile
Barrelin' down the boulevard
You're lookin' for the heart of Saturday night
You got paid on Friday
And your pockets are jinglin' and you see the lights
You get all tinglin' 'cause you're cruisin' with a 6
You're lookin' for the heart of Saturday night
Then you comb your hair, shave your face
Tryin' to wipe out every trace of all the other days
In the week you know that this'll be the Saturday
You're reachin' your peak
Stoppin' on the red, you're goin' on the green
'Cause tonight'll be like nothin', you've ever seen
And you're barrelin' down the boulevard
You're lookin' for the heart of Saturday night
Tell me, is it the crack of the pool balls, neon buzzin'?
Telephone's ringin', it's your second cousin
Is it the barmaid that's smilin' from the corner of her eye?
Magic of the melancholy tear in your eye
Makes it kind of quiver down in the core
'Cause you're dreamin' of them Saturdays that came before
And now you're stumblin'
You're stumblin' onto the heart of Saturday night
You gassed her up and you're behind the wheel
With your arm around your sweet one in your Oldsmobile
Barrellin' down the boulevard
You're lookin' for the heart of Saturday night
Is it the crack of the pool balls, neon buzzin'?
Telephone's ringin', it's your second cousin
And the barmaid is smilin' from the corner of her eye
Magic of the melancholy tear in your eye
Aches this kind of quiver down in the core
And you're dreamin' of them Saturdays that came before
It's found you're stumblin'
You're stumblin' onto the heart of Saturday night
And you're stumblin'
Stumblin' onto the heart of Saturday night
