great video... i bought it yesterday as I like rum and had previously bought some kraken and thought this would be a cheaper version...but it is it;s own rum and a very nice it is too..! had it with lidl lemonade... will add a wedge of lime tonight.. :)
I know. I grew up in an industry that frowned upon cheaper Spirits. Now... Now half the cheaper spirits are better than their waaaay more expensive cousins. Aldi and Lidl nail a lot of stuff!
Tasted this today. Nice bottle. Sipped on its own it is too sweet with a lasting burn. With cola it tastes a lot like a Baileys without the cream. All that coffee taste just explodes. So a better and cheaper alternative to the Captan Morgan dark rum.
@@StevetheBarmanUK I have now concluded that there is very little spicy flavour. The coffee is overpowering. A dash of angostura bitter has helped lift the taste.
Awesome review Steve. Currently enjoying this rum at the min and I probably prefer it over Kraken, especially once you factor in value for money. Mixer wise I’ve found Tango Tropical to be quite an interesting one, not as good as the coke though. May work better with a fruitier rum
+Matthew Smithson Would I ever buy Kraken again?! Nope. I know it’s different, but effectively does the same job...and arguably suits my palate more. Saved myself £8 there 😉😂
Hey steve been a huge Kraken fan for years, just discovered and subscribed to your channel. Really want to start exploring more dark spiced rums. What 3 others should i start with please?
+Gavin Wilkinson cheers for Subbing. Check out the 3 Videos I did over Christmas. You’ll find my favvies Neat, with Coke, and with Mixers...because they’re all different. The Lidl one is great, but there are better. Worlds End, Rumbullion etc.
Love Liberte, to my poor tastebuds I think there is definitely a Port-like aftertaste to it! Just interested Steve, Liberte is obviously after the Kraken market, but in your opinion which other run does it most closely represent?
For me, it doesn’t really. I think it nails Kraken, but there aren’t too many other Less Sweet Dark Spiced Rums. Salford have their Dark Spiced, but again, for me taste wise, it’s very different to Kraken. As I said in the video, Aldi’s Seadog doesn’t really compare either. I guess the only other one is Peaky Blinders. But again Liberte out does that too.
Any idea if they still sell this Steve? The Mrs drew a blank looking for it on a trip to Lidl :( Managed to pick up the Aldi one so trying that this weekend whilst watching the boxing! Cheers!
Yes, I saw it in Lidl in London, bought it and absolutely loved it. Normally I take Spice 19, but this could replace it. And that's because it has a higher alcoholic content, but still manages to hit the notes of the spiced 19,but with a bit more body.
Ha... goes to the cut scene and half the bottle of Liberte is gone. I guess we get it. It's good. And it is. Quite a surprise winner from Lidl actually. Big winner.
An essential shopping trip to Lidl could be in order, especially at £15. Just a bit confused after this and the Aldi review - what is the difference between rum and rum-based spirit drink?
The amount of Sugar and flavourings added. To be honest, there are very few Spiced Rums out there. The vast majority are Rum based Spirit Drinks. aka, stronger Liqueurs. the old classic and possibly original example of this is Southern Comfort. It's a Whiskey based Spirit Drink. Not a whiskey. It does't really matter, but as you may have seen in other FB groups. They get very funny over the amount of additives in a Rum!
Steve the Barman ah, ok. See personally, itmakes no odds to me to be honest mate wether it’s rum/rum based spirit drink. As long as it tastes good, then it’s all good! Yea, totally. Crazy really, I don’t know why folk can’t just be left to enjoy their choice of poison and how they wish to drink it! Bigger things to worry about!
@@darrentracey2030 its more to filter the dross from selling weak adulterated drinks such as capn morgan! as ever, many corporations try to sly the alcohol down below 40 to save on duty... savings not passed down to the consumer. there is no value in buying spirits below 40, they may be drinkable at 35 but that will be my choice to dilute in the glass not the bottle. please boycott drinks that are below what they should be, too many offenders to list... stella? speckled hen? merrydown? yeah keep slying it away little by little till they just sell flavoured water
So... i'll try to keep it simple... Rum has quite strict Guidelines. Like Gin, Whisky etc. Without getting too technical, if you add more than the legal limit of flavours, colours, sweetners etc, then it ceases to become a Rum...and technically a Liqueur. But a new term was born a few years ago "Based Spirit Drinks"... becasue Liqueurs were associated with 20% ish ABV products. You wouldn't naturally associate a 35% or even a 37.5% drink as a Liqueur. So we now have Rum Based Spirit Drinks. Interestingly though, most Gins are still termed as Gin...or Gin Liqueurs. There's more to it than that, but thats essentially as basic as i can make it. Bombshell though....probably 90% of the Spiced Rums on the Market, are not Rum, they are Rum based Spirit Drinks becasue of the Sugar and Flavours added.
@@StevetheBarmanUK That's awesome, thanks for the insight! I was trying to figure this out and couldn't find my own answers. I had a rough idea it was something along those lines but that's a great explaination. Thanks for your effort!

do more research on the distilleries. you will be pleasantly surprised. bottled under a few different names for different aldi/lidl regions, mostly rums from french gyana, or reunion, so that narrows it down.... captain cooks black spiced rum from lidl is one of the best but not always available. liberte does a great white for cocktails.
@@StevetheBarmanUK It tends to be a near Xmas thing, methinx. Too true re Kraken - I took a chance on it a week or so ago (on offer at £20 . . . in a screw top bottle pfft!).
