  • Chrysalis is a single-screen arcade-maze game for the BBC Microcomputer. It was written by Dave Mann and released by Icon Software in 1985. Versions were also released for the Electron and ZX Spectrum.
The game is a version of the arcade game Lady Bug. Guide your caterpillar through the maze eating the little green cabbages. Mutant worms will try to stop you and must be avoided. They also lay red eggs which will hatch into more worms, but you can eat these before they hatch for extra points. The dark blue walls of the maze are solid, but the others can be pushed through, allowing you a new route and possibly blocking off your enemies. There are other eggs and things that can be eaten for points or gameplay effects but avoid the skulls as they are deadly.
This is a fun game. Controls are responsive, the graphics and sound are nice, and gameplay is fast but fair. A good example of 80s arcade action making a decent conversion to the BBC.
This run was made on the 27th May 2024 using the Pantheon emulator on PC. The score reached was 9,380 points.
