This album is absolute perfection! Brilliant songwriting and arrangements, flawless musicianship, gorgeous vocals and harmonies. This is unquestionably my favorite album of the year so far. I'd be very surprised if this album isn't in my Top 10 at the end of the year.
I discovered this band in May 2023 and haven't stopped listening to them since. I regard Lakesongs of Elbid the best debut album I have ever heard as it ticks all the boxes of what I want from a progressive rock album. For me the long length of the album is a big plus, as is the crunching heaviness at times, guitar solos, fantastic vocals from Joe, fine acoustic tunes, tull like flute and great drumming. That, along with some of the heavier parts remind me of Tool on occasion - another favourite band of mine. I doubt if any new album will top this one for me during 2024 or probably for a long time.
Thanks for the review. I bought the CD from Bandcamp after discovering them from your review. This is a fantastic mix of folk and metal and highly recommended.
Joe-Parrish James played guitar on the last 2 Tull albums, so I was very curious about the music of his main Band. And man, I was stunned. Superb folk metal with iresistable melodies. This is better than Ian Andersons last to offerings. A must hear for Tull fans and listeners of folk- and Powermetal. I ordered my copy right away. We will hear a lot more by this promising bunch of young englishmen, I tell ya!
And now he's leaving Tull and Albion's bass player is taking his place.
I am not sure if JPJ played on The Zealot Gene, I think that was the last of Florian Ophale. I think they are all excellent guitarists.
@@justgivemethetruth JPJ played on one track; the rest is Florian.
Lake Isle of Innersfree was first recorded ( at least in the Metal world ) by Sir Lord Baltimore. The song is from their debut longplayer - Kingdom Come from 1970. Amazing Trio.
I'm checking this out now! Thanks for posting Pete!
Folk metal. Interesting. I'll have to check out this weekend. Thanks Pete!
Sounds great Pete just ordered cheers
Thanks for reviewing this band. Never heard them and now I’m listening them and they are gooood. Thanks!
This sounds right up my street. Love a bit of folk-rock. A valiant effort pronouncing the Welsh song titles, Pete. 🙂
I walked around Llyn Y Fan Fach (where, legend has it, The Lady Of The Lake hangs out) and Llyn Y Fan Fawr, a couple of weeks ago. It's a highly evocative landscape. The names translate as little lake by the peak and big lake by the peak. The other Welsh song title Llyn Cwm Llwch either means inlet & lake in the valley of dusty lake in the valley (llwch has two definitions).
This sounds very interesting getting good reviews will investigate thanks Pete
Hi pete ! ..👍....great show sir ! .
Go to George street in St. John's Newfoundland and you will probably hear someone singing and playing Barrets Privateers in a pub on a Saturday night. It is a very popular song in Canada's maritime provinces. The version here is excellent.
Thanks for this review, Pete. I feel this is an album I "should" like. First listen, not too bad. I think it will be a grower for me as I keeping spinning it.
I agree with Pete, 3.5 stars. I do think it's a bit too long (1 hour 9 minutes), and could do with some re-sequencing, but it's a great progressive folk album.
Sounds interesting - will have to check this one out.
Love the folkier side of Tull. I’ll check this out!
Albion from the ancient Greek/ Roman for England Yeh, very good album pagan spirit is really good, I'm impressed.
folk metal?!...thank you, can't wait to hear it!...
Definitely piqued my interest, will give this a listen!
Ok. Pete. 3.75. Thx for your time 👍💯
I don't find this to be anything like Jethro Tull - even considering Joe Parrish James, etc.
There is nothing in the structure, sound, rythym, complexity ... the music is nice, I like it.
The thing is when I went to look up Albion there was an old band looks like the Steeleye
Span branch of the electrified folk music ... but not sure there is any relationship between
the two, other than the odd connection to Jethro Tull.
With the several guitarists Jethro Tull has had, I have to ask myself, and at least post the
question of how many of the basics of Tull guitar solos are composed by Ian - and I ask
only because the guitarists that we all love with Tull never quite seem to play as well on
their own musical efforts?
To me while I like the tunes and some of the elements of this music a lot, I just find it a
bit too hobbitty, elven, rooted in fantasy. It's not for me in those terms, but I really like
that one some Pagan Spirit, Christian Heart, it's good, but repetitive and obvious.
jack Clark will be replacing Joe P james in Tull on guitar as Joe is leaving to tend to his own band. Joe added a more metal edge to
Tul on their newest album RokFlute
For me, I give it a 3 at best. I feel it is let down by what lets down most albums of this style; there is no personality in the vocals. The music itself is very nice and lush, intricate and layered; plenty to absorb on its own. But the vocals are boring; an average singer at best. Very monotone and lacking anything that would ever want me to listen to him again. It might be nice to fall asleep to but nothing I would want to have a pint to at a pub. I would probably give it a 4 if it was an all instrumental.
