I'm 86 born and raised in Chicago. My husband was a jazz drummer in the 40's and 50's so Chet Baker, Miles Davis, Bunny Barrigan (Can't Get Started), Dizzy Gillespi and Stan Getz romanced me right out of my mind and even at my age, it still works! Glad to see it's still appreciated.

How wonderful. You must have had an interesting life. I'm 55 and grew up playing the trumpet in high school and college. I always wanted to have that beautiful tone that Chet had. Alas, I fear I never succeeded.

I love your story, Dolores, those must have been great days! I'm just shy of 10 years younger than you and was a classical pianist starting at age 3 but turned professionally to standards much later on after learning several instruments and singing. I would have loved to have heard all those you mention, one fortunately can still hear a few of them thanks to their recordings, but I would have loved to have heard them live! I did hear Stan Getz a few years back. I've been a Chet Baker fan only the last few years! I heard him perform many years ago at the Black Hawk in San Francisco, but never really got in touch with his performing again until after school and much later, after leaving performing myself. He's a new old favorite!!

M.J. Leger if you can find the movie Born to be Blue with Ethan Hawke playing Chet Baker it is worth watching. Hawke does a great job playing Chet.

La Mueca you are right, it's sammy cahn's lyrics. Although one could argue that the artist performing it opens the concept to interpretation.

The first time I met Chet Baker, he was playing at a little neighborhood club called Strykers on 97th & Columbus Avenue on Manhattan's Upper West Side. He was coming back after years of an extended period of absence, having diligently devoted himself to re-learning to play trumpet with dentures, which everybody told him could not be done. But he persevered and prevailed, and this was one of his first comeback gigs. Awesome! I never heard any trumpet sound like that! I don't think it could ever be captured on a recording: So intimate tender innovative & personal...sometimes just whispering & breathing infinite silence space&timelessness into his trumpet...He just loved music & making music so deeeeeeeeeply & innately: just making the purest finest most beautiful sounds and blissful ethereal effects. Chet Baker was truly a great Maestro of the highest degree, a natural-born precocious musical genius like Mozart!
During the break I came up to Chet to thank & enthusiastically congratulate him. In my over-enthusiasm I started telling Chet how much I also dug & admired & had been imitating his singing for years, and automatically went into my little imitation of him singing “I Wish I Knew” till I caught myself & felt embarrassed & silly & said,“Oh no! Here I am doing my Chet Baker imitation for Chet Baker!” He just smiled & said “You don't look old enough to remember that record.” (1955 LP called “Chet Baker Sings& Plays")
He looked gaunt & emaciated, almost like a derelict. But his voice and manner were very pleasant polite mellow kind & refined, sensitive gentle very personable sweet good-natured & very likable, casual cultured & well-bred. I asked him if he would sing during his second-set after the break. He thanked me for asking but apologized & explained why he really couldn't because he was working with just a bassist & drummer & no piano...
He excused himself when his band-mates summoned him to prepare for their second set. There were just a few other people at that very small dimly-lit cellar club that night. My date was a nice girl who had the same last name as me though we were otherwise unrelated, I barely remember her, but we were both blown-away by Chet!
When Chet came back from the break, he opened his set singing “Just Friends” Bless his heart! Still feels good that he honored my request & was singing just for me! His singing always kinda reminds me of Alfalfa from “Our Gang”
I still listen to Chet's music almost every day now, often listening to him continually all day long, and when I try listening to something else for a change, I find myself missing his familiar soothing sound which is so much an integral part of me, I find myself unable to listen to anything else & hafta sink right back into that sweet fine&mellow transcendent celestial atmosphere he creates so effortlessly & endlessly...
PS: I had given Chet my business card that night, and to my surprise & amazement-first thing in the morning--he called me! But that's another story for another time now...

Nobody seems to be mentioning the Piano. I love Chet Baker but I believe the piano arrangement on this track is what makes it so special. The chord inversions make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Russ Freeman was the piano player as far as I know - what an amazing musician and what an incredibly interesting and moving arrangement ...

A masterful, exceedingly beautiful, deep and masterful trumpet solo. To me it conveys hope, contrasting with the melancholic nature of the lyrics and Chet’s vocal tone. A true masterpiece. I will never get tired of listening to Chet.

I've never been in love before
Now all at once it's you
    It's you forever more
I've never been in love before
I thought my heart was safe
I thought I knew the score
    But this is wine
It's all too strange and strong
    I'm full of foolish song
And out my song must pour
    So please forgive
    This helpless haze I'm in
    I've really never been
    In love before
    But this is wine

      @yourdaebakestoppar6398 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@aidanmcbride3780 That is true, but from artist's perspective, his ability of musical expression and sensibility just flows all the way through every single note and word that he lets out. I'm a classical musician, a violinist, I don't know much about trumpet or jazz at all and it's really different from what I've been playing my whole life. But the tenderness of his music lures you in completely. I listen to various songs of his, never quite catching and memorising everything he does with chords and modulations and improvisation but I enjoy every single work of his because it holds something special that I never had found in anyone else before. His talent was truly one of a kind.

I love his voice, it's so easy to listen to, his trumpet, as well. Great artist, he has a sound that is unique to him alone on the trumpet -- beautiful, yet mournful -- very touching, down deep. I could listen to him all day and night. I don't know of another artist today that has both his talents, many sing and play an instrument (besides piano), but he tops them all.

i agree. considering how good the song is, it's odd that none of the other attempts are nearly as good. almost all other arrangements seem too fast and or too jubilant. baker's is so poignantly ambivalent that it really captures the problems (and not just the joyousness) of "falling in love". and russ freeman's piano is just incredibly penetrating in its paucity of notes.

Well I love Chet Baker, and I have always loved this song from “Guys and Dolls”. (Incidentally this song was not in the movie version of G&D.) So great to discover that Chet Baker did this song.
