Hands down my favorite line from this movie and possibly all movies is when Indy is explaining dates to Marion and he says “You eat um!” His voice kind of squeaks when he says it and I giggle every time! My family has adopted it as well. We say it all the time!
I'm already saving this video on my playlist of youtube favorites. The time has come for the INDIANA JONES CINEFIX analisis! Man, I'm so happy. Thanks again @cinefix.
Great movie, great talk. Indy's first-shot reveal always reminds me of Harry Lime's The Third Man emergence. Also, the theme of Indy being more comfortable chasing artifacts in the field than giving lectures in the classroom not only fuels the film, but lays the groundwork for his relationship with his father, who is his opposite. Or looking at it another way, Raiders is the 2-hour cold open to Last Crusade.
I just love the little mystical touches that emphasise that the Ark really is not of this world. Starting from the boiling storm clouds spiralling over the Well of Souls as Indy's team work to open it, then the Ark burning away the Nazi symbol on the crate as though it cannot countenance any competing iconography.
One of my favourite Anecdotes came from Cracked's After Hours when they point out that over the course of the movie Indy has no bearing on the events or final outcome because the Nazi's accomplish every point of their plan but end up melting their own faces.
I noticed that a long time ago too, surprised it wasn't mentioned. The same can be said for Crusade as well. If Indy just got his dad out of the castle and laid low the nazis would've either died in the traps leading to the grail, choosing a false grail, or falling into the abyss upon crossing the seal
You guys are the best, and I love this series! Was totally shocked to find out this was only a Clint pick though, really goes to show his influence over the movie list series XD
Finally, one coming off my list! I know I'm not going to have many of them, but when I saw them doing this I started my list and the first 5 to fly out of my head were: Star Wars, Cool Hand Luke, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Jaws, and Usual Suspects.
I never thought about it, but the beginning of Return of the Jedi works the same way in which the whole Jabba event has nothing to do with the rest of the movie other than getting Han back. It's used as a reintroduction to the crew and their current status quo.
24:48 "light just streaming through things", you instantly reminded me of the Japanese sentiment "komorebi" (木漏れ日), light streaming through trees. the phrase doesn't simply describe the visual, but also implies the feeling that comes from setting that kind of display. i don't know much beyond that, but it tickled me that you reminded me of that concept.
With this being the end to your first season of this, I just wanted to thank you all for this whole series. This has been a great way to learn more about movies I already love and find out more about movies I need to watch. Can't wait for the next season! My one suggestion for a movie list that Raiders should be on is a Top 10 Movie McGuffins - though I guess it might be a cross of McGuffin for most of the movie until it becomes a "Big Dumb Object" by the end.
I'm really enjoying this podcast and looking forward to next season. My two cents, I would suggest you go back into the studio when you return though. The conversation flows so much better live than it does via videoconferencing. Keep up the good work!
I occasionally work with Thaine Morris on projects, he did just about every real deal pyrotechnic explosion you’ve seen in a movie since the mid 70s! There is a really cool YT video of him talking about the SFX on Raiders and it’s fantastic!
The scene where he just shoots the swordman, the team felt sorry for the guy, because he had trained really hard with the sword for the fight scene. I think it was Harrison Ford who mentioned it in an interview.
@15:16 I have an original script given to me by Kasdan. What you ae saying is not the case. @20:21 He runs like that because of an accident that occurred in RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. He tore his ACL during the plane sequence, and then he suffered a spinal injury during INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM, so cut him some slack. @39:27 The "I love you" eye message was a last min suggestion by a crew member. (The AC I believe) Spielberg loved it, and immediately called for "sharpies". I don't know who wrote it on her. @48:19 Lucas wanted her to be 15 when she first dated Indy, who at the time was Abner's assistant/protégé. Him dating his daughter at such a young age is what drove he and Indy apart.
Hats off to you noticing the focus puller‘s level of skill! But I like to think the very deep depth of field helped a lot, compared to a very shallow one where you’d probably have a harder time hitting the right spot
Damn, a long one. Didn't grow up with this one either. (The Mummy rules.) Hadn't actually seen it until a few years ago. Never expected it to be so good. Definitely sticks with you, I somehow end up watching it every year.
This conversation is making me realize something about the IJ character. All the beats and musical notes identifying the very real dangers around him in the present is bc he's so unaware. It's to note to the audience that he's not aware so you have to be made aware that there's more danger present. He's ironically flawed. He dives into the past and fully aware of the numerous dangers placed by people to protect their culture. Yet, he's hilariously unaware of how at risk his life is on the way and after grave robbing. Which is why he keeps losing to his competitor. Just a thought 🤷🏽
Nearly a two hour chat on Raiders with no mention of the entirely unplanned, serendipitous find of a seaworthy uboat _and_ detailed uboat interior set - specifically, the ones built by and for filming another 1981 production: "Das Boot"
Speaking of sound design... 😮 had anyone talked about the sound of the guns in this movie? To me they were so much more bombastic than previous movies. Have them such a punch!
1:22:32 We know, especially after temple of doom, that sometimes Indy just snaps and hits the nuke button. That whole bar scene I felt uncomfortable because any second Indy would have just snapped and shot Belloq between the eyes.
1:31:00 - The great thing about J R-D being so tall is it meant he was the right height compared to the _Hobbits_ in LOTR. So they didn't need to have yet a third scale going.
Don’t forget though that Belloq gets really protective of Marion on the pirate ship and has a disagreement with Dietrich over her. I think that he, while being selfishly motivated, does want her to come out of this unharmed. 1:08:42
Haven't been following this series as closely. Glad you're talking about one of Indie films but sure wish this Cinefix Top 100 would wrap up already, I want to see the final episode where you list all your picks.
I wanna give Dan a hug after Clint’s withering burn! That was devastating. Also, what am I going to do for nearly 2 months without the Top 100? 😭😭 Thanks for keeping it going with the non-top-100’s in the meantime. Do we know what movie the next episode will be on so I can seek out a copy?
The first time I ever heard of this movie I was told it was about an archeologist going to find the 10 commandments. I assumed it was a religious movie and didn't want to go see it. I sure am glad someone told me about the actual movie was about before it left theaters. (was nice back when a great movie would be in theaters months or more)

1:13:21 Psalm 139:1-2 says “O LORD, you have searched me and known me! You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar.” I think that it was absolutely appropriate that God personally arranged the 3 distinct demises of the architects of “disturbing the Ark of the Covenant.”
I had the scene at 1:04:06 enlarged to 2ft x 5ft on a canvas and it hangs in my movie room. Also the scene in the map room would only work 2 times a year. Probably on a solstice.
As a kid I thought Ronald Lacey as Toht was scary, but Nicholas Cage would've given me a lifetime of trauma. Imagine seeing his hand get burned on the medallion.
cmon guys, the best line is easily "Asps! Very dangerous. You go first." also not having this on your list just automatically disqualifies you from stating movie opinions.
*INDIANA JONES SHOULD HAVE NEVER BEEN ABLE TO FIND THE ARK* (my observation) In Egypt, Indy and Sallah are in Egypt having the headpiece inscription translated by a man called Imam. The length of dowel to make the staff appears to be cut too long, and this would actually make Indy's staff around 1 kadam/foot longer than Belloq's staff. It was Indy's staff that was too long, yet he was digging in the right place.
To any anime fans here, do you know the VA Bryce Papenbrook? Well guess what? His father, the late Bob Papenbrook, actually made his voice acting debut in this very film.
In an earlier episode, Dan was badly communicating on a whiteboard while we were shooting, so TorF is really just us finding another way to, rightfully, make fun of him.
On the topic of modern stars who carry any movie they are in, I think my vote would have to go to Margot Robbie. Clint's daughter was excited to watch Raiders mostly because it was a break from all of the Tarkovsky viewings.

YES! Been waiting for this one. So glad it came this early in the list!

We absolutely could have talked twice as long for this one but figured no one wanted a 4 hour podcast.
Great episode! I think this movie should be higher on the top 100. Where will the final list be kept?
Speaking of sound design... 😮 had anyone talked about the sound of the guns in this movie? To me they were so much more bombastic than previous movies. Have them such a punch!

that's not what " Shooting From The Hip" means, but I love the way you commit to it 😁

Good things take time!
I would love an action adventure movie list! That's my favorite subgenre!!
My favorite movie of all time. As a pastor, I can tell you the Ark of the Covenant is taught, but not emphasized.
The idea that a box that holds the disintegrated remains of the commandments has some power in it is silly nonsense.
I wanna give Dan a hug after Clint’s withering burn! That was devastating. Also, what am I going to do for nearly 2 months without the Top 100? 😭😭 Thanks for keeping it going with the non-top-100’s in the meantime.

Could you imagine the Ark opening scene with Cage as Belloq, though? Worth the price of admission, in my imo.
That guy watching indy in the plane scene, was actually SFX guru Dennis Muren :)
The greatest sidekick to be needlessly sidelined in the newest film.
Haven't finished the video, and I do like the long videos, but I bet we are in Top 10 territory.
1:26:20 John Williams, Hanz Zimmer, Ennio Morricone and everybody else.
Dredful listing. That should have been top 10, well done Clint
Peaking over the magazine on the plane is actually VFX supervisor Dennis Murren - OG ILM head.

1:09:55 sandstone is fairly light, as far as rocks go. I believed it.
Growing up in a baptist type church, I can 100% confirm that we talked about the ark of the covenant. Not the lasers though, that was a new one.
I had the scene at 1:04:06 enlarged to 2ft x 5ft on a canvas and it hangs in my movie room.
Also the scene in the map room would only work 2 times a year. Probably on a solstice.
You mentioned John Williams won five Academy Awards. Perhaps even more amazing is his 53 nominations. Only Walt Disney had more.

Toht's the safe choice, Belloq is swinging for the fences, if it works it works better but much more likely to fail.
43:15 *Toht* is not on the plane with him. Bad guy, _yes._ *Toht,* _no._

In an earlier episode, Dan was badly communicating on a whiteboard while we were shooting, so TorF is really just us finding another way to, rightfully, make fun of him.
Speaking of Nepalese drinking games, take a shot every time someone in this video says "to your point"
Nathan Fillion said he copies Harrison Ford. "When Harrison gets punched, he looks like he is really hurt.
The cold open being unrelated to the main story is lifted directly from Bond films
Im just come back Is there any reason for ends the 8 bit cinema?
Love watching these but y'all need to go back to a shared table for the zoom of it all
Don't worry, we'll be back in studio for the next few! Clint is flying out next week, in fact to start production on Season 2! - Producer Dan
On the topic of modern stars who carry any movie they are in, I think my vote would have to go to Margot Robbie. She's got her action chops as Harley Quinn, her big blockbuster with Barbie, and lots of other big roles with various big directors like Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Wolf of Wall Street
And the best part is, she’s only at the beginning of her career.
There are classic action movies and then there is Raiders of the Lost Ark
Now make a vid on why Godzilla minus one is one of the best movies ever to be created!
Hope someone can answer a question. Did anyone else ever see this on TV? I remember seeing a shot when Indy get on the sub where he ties his whip to the periscope and gets draged though the water behind. I am sure I saw something about this scene sometimes being in the TV version but would like to know if I am hallucinating.

Fun first season for sure.
Awe man, no more until next year 😢
Surprised no one did a brief mention about Harrison Ford stapling his hat to his forehead.
That wasn’t Toht behind that Life magazine. It was just a Nazi spy following Indy, cameo by legendary ILM FX Supervisor Dennis Muren.
Frank Walker is George Clooneys name in Tomorrowland a world beyond.
I hope you guys are planning to go back to in studio videos, the constant talking over each other is hurting an otherwise great conversation.
That wasn’t Toht. That was VFX supervisor Dennis Muren.

Since I saw it when I was older I didn't care for it too much

The mummy?????
Yikes
Nic Cage could have been the Nazi colonel.
I don't think any of those three have ever seen the first three Indiana Jones films in a cinema.
"Raiders of the Lost Ark" was Spielberg ripping off "Secret of the Incas".
