even though there's a english version i've always prefered th original German version.
He should have watched the Orginal Video, the one that was on MTV when I was young
It doesn't flow as well as the german version. But its still worth knowing what you're actually listening to if you dont know german. I've seen this song used where its like "yay happy moment.... as lady is singing about ww3 going down in german"
This song was released in West Germany in 1983 and became a hit in the US in 1984. That year I had a teacher from West Germany who visited her German class during our Christmas break. She brought back several items from her students to show what life was like for teens in West Germany, including a recording of this song.
They made an English language version, which wasn’t as good.
The song is about how 99 red balloons started World War III. It is based on a true story where a Rolling Stones concert held in West Berlin released a bunch of balloons. As the balloons went up the appeared to change shapes and the guitarist of Nena wondered what would happen if the balloons had flown over East Germany and were mistaken for UFOs.
US Army Cold War Veteran here, 1983-1986, remember this very well.
I had just moved in with my German girlfriend (later became my wife of 37 years)when this came out. All the clubs around Germany was Banging this. Great memories, Beer, schnitzel!!!😉
I was 21 when I got stationed over there.
The German version is 100X better than the English version. I'm happy you did this one.
Billy, great of you to keep going and at least appreciating the production, despite the fact you couldn't understand what she was saying💪🏻. Shows how dedicated you are and how respectful you are towards your viewers!👍🏻🥳
this was one of the most popular songs in germany at the time .. I am trying to translate the lyrics below :)
do you have a little time for me?
then I'll sing a song for you
about 99 air balloons
and where something like that comes from and leads to
99 air balloons on their way to the horizon
were mistaken for UFOs from outer space
that's why a general sent a flight formation after them
they should sound the alarm if that really were true
but there on the horizon were just 99 air balloons
99 jet planes
each one a big warrior
thought they were Captain Kirk
who made some big-ass fireworks
the neighbors didn't get it
and felt immediately scared
but there at the horizon
they just shot 99 air balloons
99 ministers of war
with matches and gas cans
they thought they were so smart
and thought they hit the jackpot
they shouted "war!" and wanted power
jesus christ, who would've thought
that things would go so far because of 99 air balloons
99 air balloons
99 air balloons
99 years of war
didn't leave room for winners
no more ministers of war
and no more jet planes
today I'm going my rounds
and see the world lie in ruins
I have found an air balloon,
I think of you and let it fly.
@@marythompson558 yes but she published that after the song became internationally famous .. it was made specifically for the german new wave music ..
@@thisismaria27 well I have the 45.
German on one side, English on the other. Assumed that was how it came over here.
One of the most valuable lessons I learned when I was studying German in college is that literal translations from one language to another are not the best. They leave out a lot of the nuance that is important to understanding the meaning. I think the English version, which isn't a translation, does a better job of conveying the storyline to an English speaking audience. What it doesn't do, and I think is especially hard for Americans in particular to understand - especially in these post-USSR days - is the cloud of fear that West Germans lived under during the Cold War. The reality is you have a nation only 40 years after being completely devastated (and divided) by WWII, facing totalitarian communist enemies on its Eastern borders -two of which had revolutions violently suppressed by the Soviet army - with hair triggers set on nuclear weapons. Total annihilation was literally seconds away. That was the environment in which this song was composed.
The first line is actually 'you and I in a little toy shop buy a bag of balloons with the money we've got'
Billy you heard this for sure in the wedding singer..This is the song drew Barrymore was listening to when glen told her he wanted to get married and brought her a CD player...
They played a sad anti-war song at soneones wedding? damn, do you never google the translated lyrics first xD
(not the english version, the translated version. The english version is like... it changes the lyrics to 90% lol)
Every 80's kid know this song!! There is an English version too but for some reason it just sounds better in Germany
Hello! Thank you for the video! Please pay attention to the young singer Diana Ankudinova.Make reactions to the songs of Wicked game, Human🌞🌞🌞DIANA ANKUDINOVA is a talented young singer. I would like to know your opinion. I think you will be surprised. Diana has a very unusual voice and artistic presentation for her age.🌹🌹🌹 Thanks in advance
If you want to hear something stunning, pay attention to the unique singer from Russia - *Diana* *Ankudinova* ! I recommend you listen!
The flip side is in English- It’s also called “99 Red Balloons”- My best friend and I had the 45 record in the 80’s- loved both versions-just loved the beat !✌️
As a dutchie.... I LOVE the German version the best. I always sung a long to it. It's definitely in my top 20 of favourite songs. xxx Suzette
Singing in German. There's also an English version of this that she sung. Came out in 1984. Good song!
I love this song. I tried to learn how to sing the slow verse at the end so I would sound like I knew what I was singing. Lol
This was in Atomic Blonde.
They made an English version, but the German version was more popular in USA anyway!
React to German "Alphaville - Sounds Like A Melody / Forever Young / Big In Japan" and English "Kim Wilde - Kids In America / Cambodia".
This song is actually a dark story. The song is about how 99 Red Ballons were mistaken for nuclear missiles on military radar, that caused a nuclear war.
There is an English version by the same group. The English version title is *"99 Red Ballons".*
But the english version has no message, the english version is hollow, it's better to just google the translated German version
I love this song even though it's a sad one. I have full conversations when I talk in my sleep.
If you have some time for me
Then I will sing a song for you
About ninety-nine balloons
On their way to the horizon
If you maybe think just of me
Then I will sing a song for you
About ninety-nine balloons
And that such a thing comes from such a thing
Ninety-nine balloons
On their way to the horizon
One could take them for UFOs from space
Therefore a general sent
A flying squadron after them
To give the alarm if it was so
There were present on the horizon
Only ninety-nine balloons
Ninety-nine jet fighters
Each was a great warrior
They regarded themselves as Captain Kirk
There was a great display of fireworks
The neighbors didn't understand
And soon felt offended
And in the process they shot at the horizon
At ninety-nine balloons
Ninety-nine ministers of war
Matches and petrol cans (gasoline cans)
They regarded themselves as clever people
Already on the scent of fat quarry
They shouted "War" and wanted power
Man, who would have thought
That someday it would come as far as this
Because of ninety-nine balloons
Ninety-nine years of war
Left no place for victors
There are no longer any ministers of war
And also no jet fighters
Today i'm making my rounds
I see the world lying in ruins
I have found a balloon
I think of you and let it fly

I was a sophomore in high school in 1984 and taking German 1. I bought the 45 single to class. My teacher recorded it and we listened to it in class with the lyrics. The B side was the English version 99 Red Balloons but the German version is the best. My classmates and students from her other classes all asked where I bought it. It was played a lot on the radio. People didn't know what it was saying but they knew it was a great song. Great times. I believe the name NENA is pronounced Nay-Nuh.
it's about how 99 Balloons caused 99 years of war cause of overzealos Generals. In the end the world is destroyed.
TLDR of the German lyrics, the english version kinda seems like a parody in comparison tbh.
I am glad you and your class liked the song tho, it's a really goodsong ^-^
We sang along, but originally I had no idea what it was about. I love the best. Hi Billy! Love your channels!
There is an English version of this song by Nina called 99 Red Balloons. They were both on the single 45 rpm and both sides were played on the radio, making it a double sided hit.
Hello, I would like to see your reaction to the performances of Diana Ankudinova. Her amazing voice surprises everyone, she performed covers of the famous songs "Wicked Game", "Human", "Havana","Take on Me". She also has her own songs "Into the sky" (В небо), "Your Voice" (Голосом твоим), "Happiness" (Счастье).
omg.. one of my childhood songs 😉👍
This song was very poignant for it's time. Yes there is an English version.
I know a lot of people prefer the German version but I have always listened to the English version. I just like being able to understand what she’s saying 😂
From the hood we use to listen to this song, I was 9 when it came out and still play this in my old school rotation. The German version even tho I don't understand most of it. I know it's about war!
I remember this song on the TV show “Scrubs” on one of the JD flashbacks
99 Red Balloons is the English version and it was massively popular in the 80's but the German original is so much better. I'm glad you started here
Aber der deutsche Track war ein nimmer 1 Hit in america danach kam erst die englische Version
One of the most important anti-war songs during the Cold War! This song has huge significance in 80's Germany! I love it!
Great song
Yes, this song was featured in the movie Bombshell with Charlize Theron.
For this song there is english vision called 99 red balloon.
As someone who speaks German and English, when my parents taught me German, they gave me this song to practise.
Never really a fan of this song growing up, but nice to hear this version thanks Billy 😊
This was shown on MTV. Back in the day when MTV actually used to show music videos 📹 😪.
It’s German. Very popular song… there is an English version.
Goldfinger does a killer cover of the english version.... They even do a verse in German
I was there, one of the Americans deployed with the 1st of the 81'st FA. Pershing I then Persing II nuclear missiles. I'm 61 years old now but these days still haunt me in my dreams and cause problems in my life day to day. If you want to see a documentary of what we/I went through youtube search and watch "Able Archer 1983: Brink Of Apocalypse" I was there also and not many people know what we went through. What Germany went through. The song was popular during this time.
This song was also in My Best Friend's Girl with Dane Cook. Love this song and i have no clue what she says either lol
She did an English version but it's a really sappy pop song in English. The German version is Great if you don't understand German. I loved this song in the 80's and I love it now too!
You need to see the official video.
Love Nena!!!!
The song has been in dozens of movies actually..
Usually Americans use them for some highschool prom song..
This song was also released in English. But people in general think it's Boring, so many listen to it in German.
There is an English version. The foreign version was played by accident by a DJ , USA . It became extremely popular during cold hot war in 80s in Germany .
It's about anticipating missile war between west and Soviet union

When I was a young lad in the 80's I wished I was Joan Jett and that I was married to Nena.
You need to do some Matchbox Twenty songs:
'3AM', 'Unwell', 'She's so Mean', 'How Far We've Come', 'If You're Gone'....
This was done during height of cold war and nuclear war on edge of ww3.
You don't want English version after this.
It was in The Wedding Singer...
I love how that upbeat song is actually about the nuclear apocalypse, all because the military got jumpy and shot down some balloons.
My 73-year-old mom loves this song...
There's a ska cover of this song that I love... Goldfinger's 99 Red Balloons.
This Absolute Classic Comes With An Important Message For Us All..Truth!!..
RALPH MCTELL "STREETS OF LONDON"
lol, none of us knew what she was saying but we still loved it. There is an english version, but the german is better, check it out though if you want to get an idea of what the song is about. This song IS the 80’s.
There is a english version but that is German that she is singing..
You might also try Peter Schilling - "Major Tom" his answer to Bowie, there is both a German and English version.
There is an English bversion with slightly different lyrics called 99 red balloons
There is an English version, but the German is the original version! The German Constitution was the number 1 hit in America in the 80s !! only after the success in america did the english version come out
This was a great song; I prefer the German version. They actually used real guitars back then and everything. At the end she finds a red balloon, thinks of 'someone', and lets it go - perhaps ending the pain her life became post the years of war. I wonder if you caught the "Captain Kirk" part at 3:03 :)
It's actually a sad song about war. Even though there is an english verson they changed the lyrics for that one.
I love the Goldfinger cover
John Forte sampled this for his song flash the message in 1998
She's German this song came out when the Berlin wall came down it was huge the German version was bigger than the English version
When my grandmother was alive she could of probably told us what the german words were because she learn some german during the 2nd world war.
There's an English version.
Ah, you just noticed that near the end.
The son actually turns a bit darker in the second verse if you know your german and you translate it, its an anti-war song and in my Interpretation About the Cold war and The DDR
She is singing about war. The balloons are mistaken for UFO's/planes and people accidently start a big war about it.
Also check out the cover by 7 seconds.
There's also an english version you can react. 99 Red Baloon.
love the german version!
It's in the recent movie "Atomic Blonde".
I remember the English version on the rocket power movie
Aaargh! I had a wierd neighbor who played this 24/7 !

There is an English version of the official video

I didn't know that this song started in Germany nor have I heard this version. I'm so used to hearing the English version...my husband knows German, too. I wonder if he's heard this version...

Original German Version:
Hast du etwas Zeit für mich
Dann singe ich ein Lied für dich
Von 99 Luftballons
Auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont
Denkst du vielleicht g'rad an mich
Dann singe ich ein Lied für dich
Von 99 Luftballons
Und dass so was von so was kommt
99 Luftballons
Auf ihrem Weg zum Horizont
Hielt man für Ufos aus dem All
Darum schickte ein General
'ne Fliegerstaffel hinterher
Alarm zu geben, wenn es so wär
Dabei war'n da am Horizont
Nur 99 Luftballons
99 Düsenjäger
Jeder war ein großer Krieger
Hielten sich für Captain Kirk
Das gab ein großes Feuerwerk
Die Nachbarn haben nichts gerafft
Und fühlten sich gleich angemacht
Dabei schoss man am Horizont
Auf 99 Luftballons
99 Kriegsminister -
Streichholz und Benzinkanister -
Hielten sich für schlaue Leute
Witterten schon fette Beute
Riefen Krieg und wollten Macht
Mann, wer hätte das gedacht
Dass es einmal soweit kommt
Wegen 99 Luftballons
99 Jahre Krieg
Ließen keinen Platz für Sieger
Kriegsminister gibt's nicht mehr
Und auch keine Düsenflieger
Heute zieh' ich meine Runden
Seh' die Welt in Trümmern liegen
Hab' 'nen Luftballon gefunden
Denk' an dich und lass' ihn fliegen
You should listen the english vision too than you will find out whats this song about,it about war to be called back.
You've got to do the American punk/ska version by Goldfinger its mostly English wish one verse in german!
Jaja
You have a Dan Akroyd kind of cadence.
How the hell have you never heard this before?
Why didn't he react to the English version of this song? Even though the German version charted, there was an English version video put out
It makes more sense when you watch the video.
It's actually an anti-war song disguised as a poppy tune. She tells the story of 99 balloons released into the air at a border and on each side generals and leaders panicked, thought they were under attack and started deploying fighters and nukes. In the end she reflects how the world suffered 99 years of war, all because of those 99 balloons and the overachieving generals
It's a sad song.
It was also a antiwar song i times of the cold war were pershings been stationed in a divised Germany.
I was there, one of the Americans deployed with the 1st of the 81'st FA. Pershing I then Persing II nuclear missiles. I'm 61 years old now but these days still haunt me in my dreams and cause problems in my life day to day.
