Synopsis:
Cheng Shao Shang is a young girl who was forced to grow up alone after most of her family had to leave to fight in a bloody war. Thus she becomes stubborn and untrusting. She fends for herself in a town populated by people like her, who have been left behind by the war.
One day, a talented and powerfu general named Ling Bu Yi comes to the town - and falls in love with her at first sight. He resolves to marry her, even though it will cause him no end of problems if he decides to pursue this union. She also warns him that she doesn’t trust him, and that her stubborn personality might not be suitable for the wife of a general. But Ling Bu Yi also has deep secrets, and there are facts about his true identity that even he does not know. Slowly, they begin to trust one another a little more - and start to investigate the truth about Ling Bu Yi’s early childhood, family, and real identity…

Niao Niao doesn't need to be disciplined, she needs love. Her tricks and being mischievous has all come from her trying to survive with being left to a family that hates her. You can't just come back after 10 years and expect her to be perfect and not show love towards her. I get that her mom loves her daughter/fl but disciplining her is not going to help. At that rate niao niao will only continue to dislike her mom. I honestly don't like her mom at the moment. I hope you get happy niao niao/fl😭😭😭.

I always loved our female lead in historical dramas where she can let her personality shine through without much reservation. She does wonderful in modern dramas as well but historical is truely her shining point

The mom’s treating her own flesh and blood daughter like a soldier while she treats her niece as if she’s her daughter. What she’s doing is unacceptable even for me. If the mother (alongside with the father) continues down that path, Niao Niao will never acknowledge them as her parents anymore than it already did when they abandoned her when she was a babe.
I understand that mom wants to teach her daughter to be ladylike, but as a soldier, she has to know what strategies to use, like knowing the situation in full, before you plan your action. Here, she is not doing that. She did not do any planning, just reacting to Shaoshang's every move. This is the wrong way to attack, even your enemy. FROM BIRTH, Shaoshang learned nothing but the bad things from Ms Ge. She has no way to compare how her actions affect others, except to be defensive, to protect herself from punishment. There was NO LOVE she has known. In her mind now, what her mother is doing is simply a continuation of what she has been experiencing before, except this time, it is from her own mother. That is even worse. 15 years of experiencing this will be hard to erase in Shaoshang's mind. Whether you agree with me or not, her mother is wrong in her approach.

I am having a stomach ache from laughing so hard when Madame Cheng pretended to kill herself by jumping into the well, but the well is too small for her. Then she pretended to bump her head against the wall and asked her daughter-in-law Ge to hold her but Ge slipped her hand so Madame Cheng's still bumped her head against the wall. I was cracking up laughing. So hilarious. He, he, he. 😆😆😆 This Cheng family can win an over-dramatic award. 😆😆😆

I get why she doesn't trust anyone and questions everything the general and her mom says. She has been left with horrible family members for years. I like how her parents play the bad cop/good cop roles. I also see how her mom is concerned about her even though she is the bad cop/strict parent.
I get it, it's hard to trust. When everyone around has let you down and you can't depend on anyone but yourself.
But the mother need to understand,her daughter need love before discipline, she was getting disciplined harshly her whole life ,she feels threaten by her mom cuz she feels she only want to control her

Exactly! From the moment she learned to speak she has never known love but hostility. I am actually in awe of how well she grew up despite all that and didn’t become dark in heart. If my parents left me like that to fend off these vultures I would have become the main villain of the show.

Actually, (episode 1) shows how hard it is - the life of a child of the military, most of which is true. Neglected, poorly groomed with rags of clothing, malnourished, and sickly. (walking around with a fever).

My mother is exactly the same as this fourth lady's mother. She was always busy so I grow up like an orphan then at the age of 12 yrs old I went to the city away from my mother for my education. Her other children were raised with her love and protection so they can be "pure" as she expects, they have never needed to learn the little schemes that make up the backyard of most families. I may be wrong but I think the FL is just vengeful and stubborn personality wise, because some people under same circumstances wouldn't still have the heart to play some of those tricks or act unseemly no matter how unloved they feel. Some people respond to such treatments by trying to earn the love of those that treat them badly. Some grow up being indifferent about things and don't bother playing tricks but just try to go unnoticed and unbothered by the family drama (there are many more coping mechanisms people develop in such situations). So the FL is a stubborn teenager at the moment and her mom's trying to do an emergency fix 😅 she's using the rod and forgetting to have talks with her daughter to explain things to her.
Maybe I'm not mad because my personality finds it hard to hold grudges and I love to make excuses for others and think the best of them so I would just find a way to make truce with the family members and stay low while I'm at the house and not make trouble instead of fighting my elders 😂 I don't have that kind of energy so I'll save myself the stress. It takes energy to hate people for so long please 😂

I don't buy the mother argument: I don't find Niao Niao unruly. She learnt to be streetsmart the hard way. After all, how could she survived all these years among this horrible family ? Moreover, at this point, the parents worries are misplaced: they literaly abandonned her! Besides, we're talking about military parents that use the art of war, deceptions and strategies on a daily basis. Why would they resent their child because she resorts skillfully with the same tricks? Hope the plot and the characters interactions will be more clearly exposed and that they will make sense with the next episodes...
They did not abandon her they had to go to war, it's like saying soldiers that go to war to defend their countries are abandoning their children look at what's happening in Ukraine are u insinuating that the people defending Ukraine are abandoning their families? Why are u discrediting a person's hard work to keep u at home safe. She is indeed troubled and I can understand how she ended up that way, but if she doesn't change for better how is that going to help her. Who the hell willingly wants to be illiterate. In her time period she will be looked down on and belittled by others of the same status with better education and for not behaving like a "so called lady". She already has limited opportunities for being a woman no need to make it worse. Stop looking at it from a modern perspective and think about the time period.
While I do agree her mother is indeed a bit much, she can be taught without being disciplined. She can simply correct her behaviour in a different way but because she is a military woman she only knows how to be strict. I also saw u mention the strategies she uses to keep herself safe it is indeed good becuz I would also do it to ppl that treat me badly but certain things she does has turned into a habit, she keeps acting weak to get pity instead she could just come forward and say what she wants no need to be like that, she know it's not working on her mother. This habit can ultimately turn out bad for her in the future, it's honestly best if she was actually honest. Being fake is not a good look and I don't want her character to be like that but that's what it is now, but I have to wait for character development so not complaining.
@@haylzz_myfaceu9980 They did abandon her. The mother could have fought harder to take her daughter with her instead she made The Choice to leave her daughter and take her son. They are twins. You cannot expect her to feel the love that she is supposed to feel towards her mother after hearing all her life that her parents abandoned her even even from her grandmother all because her grandmother favors boys over girls. As for the aunt she is just upset because she hasn't been able to birth a male child of her own, so she tried to steal their son not knowing that they were a set of twins and the mother sacrificed her daughter in order to take her sons

I'm on pause for the show right now I only know what I've seen so far and is only commenting on that plus the next episodes showed what happened when she gave birth but didn't see anything with a twin?? @@haylzz_myfaceu9980 Niao Niao has a Twin Brother and when her mom gave birth The Aunt had manipulated the Situation so the grandmother wanted her to leave the baby but they thought it was only a boy and they were twins and Niao's mother chose to take the male twin and leave her daughter

This drama is gooood! Also shows how parents can fail in their way to teach their children. How mother shouldn't see her daughter as a soldier but as... her daughter, who spent year without love and caring from her parents because they were away and beinf mistreated by some bad family members. If you remember the first episode, while she was at that country house, she barely had food to eat. So, her mother should bear that in mind first and give her daughter all the love she could while teaching her. No need to be so cold and strict, you can teach your child and show them you love them in many ways without making them feel you dont care about their feelings.
That’s really true…it seems she loves her daughter but doesn’t want to show her love to her daughter…because don’t want her to be a spoiled brat
No matter how many times I watch this series I really dislike, if not, hate the mother. She doesn't treat her daughter lovingly and with patience as she should after being away from her so many years. She keeps forgetting that they are basically strangers and Niao Niao had to take care of herself for far too long.

Honestly, the acting in the Cheng family is top tier👑🏆. They should receive an award for this and if not perform in front of his Majesty so that he could get a good laugh too😂🤣.
My girl, you know faking in front of your mom is futile, so why still pretending🤷♀? Though the mother needs to understand that there is a huge gap and distance between them💔. Even if she wants to discipline her, she will get misunderstood by her own daughter because of this😢.
We love the dad though💝, he was awesome with his fake crying and again.....I can't with his expressions🤣🤭. Also, the way he thinks into supporting his mom if she finds new love is really nice.
The women in all these shows are so funny at how they use their emotions to get what they want....however this drama topped every other in terms of DRAMA QUEENS AND KINGS.

Honestly in that girl place I would never trust parents that abandoned her nor would I ever give them a chance to approach me! And I would also only relay on myself. They are basically strangers to her. Why should she trust two people that only brought her into the world to let her survive on her own with an abusive grandmother and aunt?

I understand that they could have maybe requested for short holidays to go see their daughter but who knows how tight their situation has been for those years (I'm not in the military and I don't know how ancient china soldiers lived while they were at war), but the deed has been done, it's best to forgive your parents and move on. People make mistakes sometimes, you can't hold on to it and live a miserable life just because someone made a wrong decision (unforgivness affects you more than the person you are refusing to forgive tbh, it's not worth it). At least they are here now, she could have moved on and started afresh. Trying to rely only on yourself is a hard life 🤧 not worth the stress, having people you rely on is beautiful. And to have that we have to learn to forgive people when they make mistakes, her parents aren't happy about being mia for years.

I've seen good parents who never needed to "disciple" their child because their love is genuine and live their life as they would want the child to live & led by examples so the child mimics like all children do.. when I get a case to help or heal a child, I've rarely go straight to the child but talk to the parents 😂 straighten the parents & the child is then healed.

This show is doing a good job of showing how both mother and daughter are both taking the wrong approach. Niao Niao definitely needs to be disciplined. Her upbringing has made her rebellious and manipulative. But she needs to be shown love as well. Her mother's approach to discipline doesn't show the love that's behind it. You can tell from her eyes how enraged she is that her in-laws not only manipulated them into leaving Niao Niao behind as a baby but didn't even raise her properly. These two are fantastic actresses! I love grey characters!

this is my second time watching this drama. the thing I like most is how honest the writing is concerning character faults. they are completely fleshed out and the characters are geniune and deep because of them. and they aren't surface level faults either.

You can tell she is still a child when she is only worried about getting revenge and can't understand anything deeper. when she overheard her mother saying how she cant mold her and only be strict, you can tell the FL doesn't understand and only cared about dealing with people who are against her. This is an interesting misunderstanding, but at least she knows the mother's intentions whether she understands them or not.

Exactly 👍🏻 she doesn't understand the motive properly. I watched the episode and I wasn't mad at her mom at any point, because I understand her mom's intentions. If she becomes a more sensible young lady she won't receive slaps on her palm 🤷🏻♀️ mom's don't punish because they just feel like it, that's the difference between discipline and someone just trying to be mean to you. Discipline is to straighten you up. We all need to be straightened out while growing because childishness is just natural to kids. If not we grow into adults that don't understand that actions have consequences and your actions affect others too so you can't be selfish and do whatever you feel like just because you can.
