Amazing!! Super motivating as a woman myself training for the CPAT currently!

Good luck in your training - let us know about the testing results. How long do you have to prepare?

@@vugibsonI took the CPAT yesterday and passed in 9:12! I have an athletic background but I prepared for about 3 months (and will continue on to prepare for fire academy when I make it!)

In what state have you tested?

Would you say I'd be in pretty decent shape for the stepmill if im doing 75 lb stepups/downs on my 9 inch step for 6 minutes followed by a 5k run? I keep a pace of 27 steps per minute (have to factor in the step down time as well, no stepmill to practice on)

Possibly. The test pretty much comes down to the condition of the legs and the lungs; if you can do those tasks back/back with no rest in between, you might be ready. Best way to test is to either simulate Event 1 on a stair mill; if you can still walk at a speedwalk pace (3.5), you might be ready. Or you can simply go take a practice CPAT.

I’d love to know what training she did to get that forced entry time!

She's an avid cross-fitter and certified instructor. We hope to bring her back about some of these questions regarding prep.

How did you train for this? How long did it take you to train?

    • @vugibson
      @vugibson  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

This particular candidate is an avid cross-fitter.
      Recommend training with:
Weight vest (which can be supplemented with small dumbbells)
      Stair climber
      Other useful items:
Rescue Dummy (great workout simulating Event 7)
Sledgehammer w/10lb head (could use with a flip tire or if space doesn't permit, a Power Hammer by Badger Sports is handy).

How do you get passed the dummy drag?! My legs are spent after a quarter of the way there 😞

@@vugibson I do the stair climb with 80 pounds. I lift weights and I try to simulate the events. I just wall pretty slow and the dummy just kills my time. Testing here in Florida

@@jameswillson2000 If your legs are spent before you're done with Event 7, then your legs aren't quite primed for the test. This is what I typically suggest to candidates for further training (these three items would be in addition to regular workout, probably not exceeding two/three per week).
First, lower the weight in your vest so that you can completely and comfortably simulate Event 1 (basically 3.5 minutes @ 60SPM). After finishing this simulation, immediately proceed to a treadmill and speedwalk for perhaps 10 minutes (suggested speed 3.5 - 4.0mph; try to keep weight vest at max of 50lbs during this walk). Immediately following this, take off any extra weight and do some cardio (suggested 10-20 minutes).
Each time you attempt these three items, try to improve your performance: add a little bit more weight into the vest (usually 2.5 - 5lb increments); try to speed walk a little faster than the time before; and try to improve your jog time. Keep doing this until you can simulate Event 1 with the full 75lbs and still complete the other two tasks. If you can complete a full simulation and still be able to speed walk at that rate and still have enough to be able to jog for that length, your legs should be able to handle the test.
Feel free to throw in some other event simulations afterwards; carrying dumbbells for the equipment carry; a 10lb sledgehammer with a tractor tire (a Bumper Hammer by Gopher Performance is a great training tool).
