Great vid. I’m about to inherit my grandfathers 1981 Ford Escort 1.3GL and I’d love to lower the suspension, but I’m not confident I could carry out the work, even following your clear video. Would this be a costly job performed by a garage?

Hey Myles, Sounds like a nice car. Is that 3 door or 5 door and whats the colour? I'm not any kind of professional as you can tell 😂 and this was my first time doing this job on the Escort. I'd worked on the Capri before but this is a different set up. I dont think a garage would charge a lot (depending on where you are in the country) . If you did go for it though I would suggest soaking down the 19mm bolts I had to undo and the rear Tie Rod nuts. The brake lines for the rear are a bit of a pain if its been untouched. I think these might be the hardest thing not to damage. If I can help just let me know. I've taken the rear off a couple of times now trying new things to get the back a little higher.

Finally getting to pick up my Grandad’s car on the 12th Nov from Callan, Ireland. Flying out and then a 9.5hr road trip with a ferry crossing. It’s the 5 door version. It has a current MOT, has been garaged all its life. I have a day to check it over before getting on the road. Any tips/suggestions of things to look out for?

Cool car! Nice to see someone else keeping one going. You said that you had a rear tie bar snap. Where did you get a replacement from, if you don't mind me asking?

Great vid and i dig the stance, one thing tho, maybe check the alingment of the car, when you lower or lift the car it changes the factory setup and that can result in an out of center steering wheel and unusual tyre wear

Cheers for this! I definitely Intend on taking it to the garage to sort this out. I just need to change the rear shocks first, considering letting a garage finish it off in case i snap a brake line on the rear.

love this vid, i need to change my top mounts but ive never done it before will i have to dissemble to strut to fit new top mounts on the front

Hey! thanks for the comment! to change the top mount you will need to undo the 19mm bolt at the bottom of the strut, the 19mm on the top and remove the whole thing from the Car (watch the driveshaft/CV joint doesnt drop to much) . The top mount rubber can then be placed on top of the strut and put back in the Car. You might be able slip it in after un doing the top bolt but I doubt.

There will be at some point. I’ve just been driving it as is and spending time on the Capri. I need to figure out my next step with this one .
