This is Everything You Need To Know, the series where we give you the story behind some of football’s defining moments. This week we are looking at the 2003 takeover of Chelsea of Chelsea FC by Roman Abramovich, and all events that caused the deal to happen.

We look at the former ownership of Ken Bates, Abramovich’s rise within the post-Soviet Union business world, and how Tottenham Hotspur almost became the club he went for.

Ngl Roman and Chelsea have really gained my respect, apart from sacking every successful manager for no reason, they’re extremely efficient in the transfer business, selling for a lot and buying for less. Plus the fact that the team can still maintain consistency even though they are forever changing managers

First time Im in love to chelsea since i am 10 years old when watching ruud gullit wear blues shirt accidentaly in indonesian television. Thats periode chelsea in 4th -7th position (sometimes in 2nd position). Nobody loves chelsea in Indonesia and my friends always wonder why i love chelsea 😊 but when roman takes the club everything is change and won first EPL Thropy.,, suddenly indonesia have a huge number fans of chelsea... thank you roman and ken bates for your dedication to my club 😄
I'm glad there are lot of fans like this . I've been following Chelsea since 2001. Around that time star sports was telecasting EPL In India Nd some parts of Asia ( I think) and the prime slots were focusing on arsenal, man utd, Newcastle, Leeds and Liverpool. Many of my friends were either Supporters of man utd or arsenal. Of course these clubs had superstars but I was baffled that many of them didn't pay attention to the kind of players Chelsea had. Ex- Hasselbaink is a very underated player. I'd always look to see if he was selected by the Dutch national team but he wasn't sadly .
Same here in Malaysia. Most of my friends support MU or Arsenal, and I was exposed to MU before I know any other EPL clubs. But I have always like dark horses so MU or Arsenal didn't really attract my attention when I get to know more clubs from the EPL. I started following Chelsea around 2002, not a popular choice at the time. Football fans my age didn't know any of the players, but they would know players from MU, Arsenal or Liverpool. And soon after, Roman era begun. As a kid, I had no idea about the debt, I only saw Chelsea as a club that could become a champion. Roman saved us financially and turned us into a champion, and I was so excited because my "unpopular" club won the league. Roman invested heavily to make his club the best, and I am grateful for that.

people love to talk about how 'x' club wouldnt be anywhere without money, but most clubs wouldnt either. Arsenals most successful period in the 1930s. They had the most expensive transfer for that time, as well as various other players bought from other clubs. They also had rich owners. Thats just one example, but im pretty sure the majority of all the clubs are the same... Also, its not about how much money a person has, but if they use it and how they use it. Man U have had one of the highest net spends in the last 10 years, but they havent achieved the most. Arsenal have the 3rd richest owner in the prem, but he doesnt like spending on them. 60-70% of the prem is owned by foreign investors... So in reality. It's not all about 'the money' but also how you use it...
