    First, the heads, fuel delivery and pistons are different on the BRZ/FRS motor vs the WRX. This gives it a higher compression ratio as well.
    Secondly, I'm with you that the WRX is a better buy, but the STI isn't the same except the engine.
    The WRX and STI share the exact same chassis and sway bars. The extra cost of the STI is in the suspension, transmission, axles, limited slip and driver controlled differentials (3 differentials in each car, by the way), steering rack, interior, and the engine.
    The STI drivetrain is still one of the most stout and advanced in the world.
    BUT, I did the math recently in a discussion online and for the 30% extra you spend on an STI vs the 5-10% extra performance isn't worth it, on top of the fuel mileage difference.
    Previously, the STI was worth it, but with the VA chassis, not so much.
    The WRX starts at $26,695 MSRP.
    The STi starts at $35,195 MSRP.
    The STi is 31.8% more expensive, starting out, vs the WRX.
    If you take an average of the aggregate of the 1/4 mile and 0-60 times from all major automotive publications since the 2015 MY:
    The WRX is 5.35 seconds to 60mph.
    The STi is 4.92 seconds to 60mph.
    The STi is 8.74% faster to 60mph.
    The WRX does the 1/4 mile in 13.94 seconds @ 98.91mph
    The STi does the 1/4 mile in 13.433 seoncds @ 103.04mph
    The STi is 3.77% seconds and 4.18% mph faster in the 1/4 mile.
    On Car and Driver's Lightning Lap at VIR:
    WRX posted a time of 3:15.5
    STi Posted a time of 3:10.5
    The STi was 2.62% faster.
    On Motor Trend's Streets of Willow, driven by the legendary Randy Probst:
    WRX posted a time of 1:27.33
    STi posted a time of 1:26.12
    The STi was 1.41% faster.
    Having been an owner of an STi in the past, I will agree it is a better "driving experience" as far as "feel" goes.
    I prefer the FA20 powered WRX. It has much more usable torque thanks to it's twin-scroll turbo, and flatter power curve.
    Strictly from a statistical, logical point of view, the WRX is a better option with this generation. I don't think that $10,000 more is worth it for the STi now.

    • @righteousfire885
      @righteousfire885 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      @Colin Delabastide you missed the point by a lot, I guess.

    Here is where the extra money goes for STI:
    1) Bigger Engine
    2) C.DIFF + 2 LSD
    3) Brembos
    4) Bigger wheels
    5) Hydrolic Steering
    6) Close Ratio Gearbox
    7) Throttle Maps

      CyberrJunky yeah I get the feeling dudeinblue does not really do any research prior to shooting these videos. I am not a subaru owner or fan, yet I know there are always three diffs in a permanent 4x4 car, as opposed to dudeinblue who says there are only two.
      Thatdudeinblue is very talented and knows how to describe emotions while driving. He tells you how a car feels and what sort of "personality" it has. When it comes to technical talk such as drivetrain/suspension knowledge, I am led to believe, he simply talks to the owner a bit and then simply shoots a video. A brave move, but I can't see him doing that for an extended period of time. His fanbase is huge and I am afraid many if not most of his subscribers have outgrown him in understanding of the technical side of things. The question is, whether the narrative about car's personality is enough for such people to find his videos interesting and keep viewing them in the future.

      The 2018 has a c diff it’s just not controllable by the driver. It splits the torque automatically based on wheel slip. The wrx does need some limited slips though.

  • @mrsnowboardcrazy

    The reason they don't turbo the BRZ is probably because of some agreement between Toyota and Subaru. If they were to make an STI version it would severely hurt FRS sales.

      Scion doesn’t exist lol. They don’t turbo it because then it would take away from wrx/sti sales and some would settle for the 300hp 86 instead of getting toyotas new supra.

    • @mrsnowboardcrazy
      @mrsnowboardcrazy 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Devin Stambolziovski Gt86 then, make the leap. It would take away from those sales but it would also take away from Toyota's and there was probably an agreement between Subaru and Toyota when they built the car that there would be no STI version

    • @louisarroyo5255
      @louisarroyo5255 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Honestly the reason I believe brz and gt86 won’t get a turbo is to keep it like the ae86, NA and from my understanding high rpm range. Unless they decide to make a track edition type thing because the chassis for the twins is really good.

    • @bombardier6033
      @bombardier6033 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I mean they could make a turbo STI/TRD and fix the current problems of the BRZ while also adding some more horsepower (280-ish) and more torque
      adding tiny extra aero bits and pieces would also be really nice

    I own a 2017 WRX, and it's simply about the owner. You get a good value for both cars IF you want a quick fun daily driver (WRX) or a track racer (STI). Both cars are amazing on their own right, and they're actually much different (transmission, brakes, suspension all adds up, not just the engine.)
    For me just wasn't worth it the extra cash for the STI because I don't do track, but that's it. I'd get an STI if it was cheaper for sure hahaha!

  • @MrDroid0518
    @MrDroid0518 7 ปีที่แล้ว +122

    Is the sti worth the extra money YES. But the real question is, is it worth it to the person driving it. It's that simple. As a sti owner I can honestly say the wrx is better for the vast majority of people but if you need or want the trans diffs brakes and hydraulic steering etc the sti is worth the extra money

    David, sorry you really don't know what you're talking about. First off the FA20 in the BRZ and WRX are different. The former has port injection and direct injection, better flowing heads and different pistons. Secondly the STI has a much better feeling trans with a mechanical linkage and better gearing, better not open diffs, bigger brakes, and a better steering ratio. You're seriously over generalizing just saying they're basically the same.

    • @seanc5718
      @seanc5718 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      No the STI still has an old port injected ej25. I'm saying the FA20 in the BRZ and the FA20 in the WRX are not just different because one has a turbo. The BRZ has both port and direct while the WRX is strictly direct injection. There's a bunch of other small differences that add up.

    If your going for a high horse power build then the Sti is the choice. The Fa20 wrx is great for a daily driver "stage 2" makes the car a blast day to day. Once you go beyond "Stage 2" you run into fueling issues thanks to the direct injection. Having to supplement fueling becomes the issue. Such as doing port injection running a piggy back to control it. I am running a Aquamist methanol kit with four nozzles into the intake manifold. The low end power is amazing in the Wrx thanks to the twin scroll but once you start making power you have to tune the power band for after 3krpms. Since the car makes so much torque down low it can cause the rods to bend. Like I said if you want Huge power numbers get the STI, but if you want a fun daily driver the new Wrx is the way to go. I know one thing though if Subaru doesn't WOW us all with the new FA2.4 they will start to lose their fan base. (I'm talking atleast 380hp) Let's also hope the new FA2.4 has port and direct injection built in like the Brz does. Rant over

    I have a 2015 WRX with 66k OG miles on everything nothing has been touched other than normal oil changes and air filters. The car runs beautiful and it’s a blast to drive. I average 23-28mpg even getting on it. I can get around 350-400 miles to a tank of gas. It’s the base model I do wish it had better headlights and and wheels but that will come eventually. Nice video! I do think the STI is worth it in a sense over the WRX, but then again heck with the old EJ motor, the FA seems more reliable and better gas mileage.

      No difference in suspension between 2018 sti and 2018 wrx. That was the upgrade for 2018 wrx. And better steering, also the transmission was made better for 2018. Not huge differences to compare to the sti but still slightly better whilst the sti is the same as 2015, except for interior, wheels and brakes, 4 pot to 6 pot. Seems like their possibly gonna put the fa20 in the 2020 sti just overbuilt like the prior sti/wrx generations with the ej255 vs ej257.

      Unless something changed, the 6-speed in the STI is significantly stronger than the one in the WRX. Completely different unit, not even counting the DCCD. The wrx should have a weaksauce viscous center differential, just like "normal" manual trans subarus.

    I get why most people prefer the wrx, from pricing, the lower end torque, corners well for what you get, etc. with that being said I went with the STI for that glorious UEL sound, the much better transmission, brembo brakes, and to me personally, I kind of like the top end power and the drama the turbo lag gives you when it just smacks you in the face. To each their own though. I do agree Subaru needs to get their shit together though and should have put a new engine in their STI years ago, and the STI price shouldn’t be so expensive either.

    14mpg is BS. I drive my STI in London daily in its morning and evening traffics and I get 20mpg, and I don't drive it like a grandpa as well. And guys, FFS, you don't buy sports car and then moan about the MPG. Those who do moan about it either moan about everything, or just went over their budget and thought that car's price ends when you just pay for the car. David, you have this smiles per gallon campaign going with available sticker to buy. First thing I did when I got myself an STI was got that sticker and put it on my car so that whenever I am asked how much it drinks I just point to the sticker and walk away. And all of you asking Subaru for newer things, aren't you the ones who always moan about how cars these days are going automatic, how they feel heavier, how there is no feel of the road in steering rack, how there is no handbreak anymore, yada yada yada. And here comes Subaru and gives you pure raw drivers car in STI. Manual, handbreak in place, mechanical diff(which is awesome), one of the best steering racks. Basically all the things you lot are moaning about in modern car Subaru avoids and keeps it old school. Old engine? There is a reason its still there (excluding development costs of new engine obviously :D), because of unequal length headers and its rumble. New WRX sounds just like any other 4 cyl car, so all of the Subaru fans moan about it, that Subaru lost it, this and that.
    And David, what is this BS about other cars available for the same price as STI? Few videos ago you yourself talked about the Ford RS dealer mark ups in US. And offering VW Golf R if kinda blasphemy, since Golf R is kinda meh. And two wheel drive civic? Yeah, my wallet would love me for tyre changing marathon every half a year. I was changing tyres for my scirocco 1.4 TSI every year, and here comes 300+ horses (double of scirocco) front wheel drive civic. Yeah.
    So either way, suggesting WRX over STI is kinda stupid. If you have money for STI, get an STI, you won't regret it. If you don't have money for STI, get WRX, the soul of Subaru is kinda still there.
    P.S. I'm talking here from UK point of view. Subaru discontinued STI in UK and if I see a Subaru on the road in London its like xmas for me. If I see Ford RS here, its just another Ford, if I see Golf R, its just another Golf. I never seen people stare at any golf R or RS on the street as much as they look at my car. And we can always ignore all this and mention one reason why you need to get Subaru: community or in other words family ;)

      Focus rs is selling all day fully optioned 39-41k same exact price as a sti and even the limited. And pretty much the golf r fully optioned is the same price. It’s just a smack in the face when ford releases a better awd platform than the sti (proven) the motor in the RS mod for mod is light years ahead of the sti, the golf r smacks the shit out of the sti interior and has the dsg trans making it a mini gtr. And then you have the same basically the exact same fucking Subaru engine that’s been in the sti for pretty much 10 years. It’s time for a change and that’s what David is saying if you guys are happy with 305 hp that most sedans are coming standard with then by all means have fun racing mini vans and sedans.

    You pretty much nailed it on the head I love my 2019 WRX and I'm glad I picked it over the STI the motor is more up-to-date and can pull just as many horses or be just as quick as the STI with just a few mods and a stage 1 or 2 tune. It is a way more comfortable ride for a daily driver as well.

    My brz was 265 with a few simple mods and a tune to the intake and exhaust. 3.5inch overpipe straight out behind the front tire. Turbo was next just fate had other plans. Loved my brz, handles great and drive very nice. I'd own another, I agree with them needing STI. My brz started at 4250 and peaked at 7800 hell of a power band. It was nice just needed that tight spooling Turbo and would have been a perfect car.

    Thank you for hitting up on the 6-spd. Though, like I did, buying a WRX and swapping in the 6-spd is much cheaper.
    Yes, Mitsubishi did change engines, but now look where it is. Also, with there finally being a billet EJ I wouldn't expect the platform to disappear any time soon.
    EJ engines don't go boom just because. They go boom either from idiocy, assembly error or someone is making insane power (and like any engine, making much more than engineered power will shorten the life of it).

    I honestly do prefer the WRX because it’s the same as the STI except for the engine like you said and the best thing about the WRX is that it can do everything like the STI with a little nudge! I can carry family and stuff, still tune it, drive a 6 speed, look the same (without the wing and badges)!

  • @vinnysob6380
    @vinnysob6380 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I disagree that the cars are that close. I have owned a WRX and 3 STis. I currently have a 2017 STi limited and my Sister has a 2018 WRX limited, so I am able to make a direct comparison as well. Our cars are about $12,000.00 different in price and they are both the highest level package for each car. So, what is different, and is it worth $12,000.00 to go between models?
    1. The transmission. They are both six speeds, but the WRX transmission feels like absolute trash compared to the STi. The STi's reinforced, close ratio transmission feels tight and responsive and overall bulletproof. We both have the Short throw as well and hers feels like a sloppy mess, just like my 2011 WRX's transmission did. So, would you pay a thousand dollars (or two) for an upgraded transmission? I surely would, as it is one of the most important aspects of your car. And don't get me started on the nasty rev-hang in the WRX,
    2. Brembos. It will cost you between 3 and 7 thousand dollars for a Brembo upgrade, and that is if you buy the part and install them yourself. If you have driven a car with Brembos then you know that they destroy the standard brakes on a WRX. So, we have already almost covered the price gap. This is also something that was standard on the Evo. NOTE: I have driven EVOs as well and I really like them and almost purchased the Final Edition, but they felt stripped out compared to the STI and it was a lot more money and had been sitting on the lot since 2015. If they bring them back I am all about buying either car.
    3. Suspension/body stiffness. The suspension/stiffness on the STi makes the WRX feel like a marshmallow in a tight turn. Not to mention the steering feel is completely different. When you drive them back to back you feel a night and day difference. And the new electronic steering on the WRX takes away from the feel dramatically. Give me assisted rack and pinion any day. I really hope they do not add that crap steering to the STi. Anyway, how much would it cost to upgrade the WRX's suspension/body stiffness to match the STi? I guarantee it would not be cheap. NOTE: The STi is a rough ride, so if you are a man bitch or have back problems, this may be an issue.
    3. Forged BBS wheels, which are relatively light and actually look great and do not need to be changed. The first thing my sister did was swap out her hideous WRX wheels and it cost a couple of grand. Again, the money difference has already been made up for and I could go on and on. WRX wheels are trash.
    But wait, there's more: Controllable differential, controllable throttle response, increased HP, improved exhaust, improved exhaust note, Subie rumble (not available with the FA engine as the headers are equal length), two tone leather--the red on black looks great, red race style gauges, dual zone climate control, Round shifter boot (much nicer looking), Rev limiter indicator, Big ass wing or not (this is my first STi without the wing and I kind of miss it sometimes), superior badges, and very importantly, superior resale value.
    Some of the list is BS aesthetic crap, but this video seemed to focus on the least important reasons a STi costs more, and is a superior vehicle. The real reason 9/10 people will purchase a WRX instead of a STi is because they cannot afford the STi. And that is hard truth. If you drive them back to back there really is no comparison. The new STi RA just came out and it improves upon the current STi in several areas, the only reason I am not getting one is because I cannot afford it and my car is only a year old, so it makes no sense. But if money wasn't an issue, who wouldn't go for the STi RA?
    Also, I am not a complete fanboy of the STi, but I live in the northeast and the winters can be nasty, so all wheel drive is a must and there are really few options that give you the all wheel drive bang for your buck like a Sti, or a WRX for that matter.
    Lastly, I had a Hyper Blue edition STi and the engine blew at 4,000 miles, so there is one reason to maybe get a WRX, because it has the newer motor. It actually turned out to be bad rings and a lot of subies ended up with them in their EJs. Too bad too, because that was a pretty cool STi.

    You're drawing conclusions on the STI before actually driving the car the way it was intended to be driven - on the track. Regarding the EJ, yeah it has been around for long. That's a bad thing for those who don't plan on going down the mod rabbit hole, but a good thing for those who have big plans for their builds. Engine familiarity is important, which is why track enthusiasts prefer motors that have been around for a while (4g63, 2jz, rb26, k20 etc...)
    As a daily driver though, yeah you're pretty much spot on

      AlexCell33 all street legal cars are "meant for the street", technically speaking. The STI is skewed towards those who do take their cars to the track. The absurd chassis stiffness is the #1 indicator of that.

    • @Casey_J96
      @Casey_J96 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Let’s be real STI’s are not track cars. Yeah people take them to the track and they’re plenty quick but it’s not like it’s an Ariel atom.

    • @thabigkahoona
      @thabigkahoona 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Out of the box? Of course they're not track cars. Very few street legal cars can be driven off the showroom floor and onto the track, reliably. Even an M4 wouldn't last an track session with its stock pads and cooling system. This has probably been beaten to death, but they're fantastic platforms to work on. There's a reason you see them dominate mid-tier & high-tier time attack races, among others.
      I would not want to own this car in stock form. As a car you're gong to work towards making track-capable, you can do far worse than a VA STI. The steering, chassis, seating position, & aftermarket are all fantastic.

    The heavier hydraulic steering, more linear braking performance with the fixed calipers and ability to rapidly bleed off heat with more pad surface area, different suspension with firmer ride, heavier clutch, different transmission, firm Recaro seatback, very top-end biased power, sound differences, and ability to tighten the diff in low-traction situations radically differentiated the driving experience of the STI for me. The EJ25 is definitely a love-or-hate engine. IMO, it's definitely worth driving both before buying, and recognizing how the FA20F is going to be a little more playful at low-end and mid-end power, where the EJ257 feels like a 1990s rental car at very low-end, and then really comes alive and radically more exciting above 4500 RPM. I think the STI's current tires also gives it a bit of an edge over the OEM rubber on the WRX, although the V105G is still not quite comparable to the best max performance summer tires IMO (IIRC there is a Canadian STI trim that uses 18 inch wheels and the Dunlops previously used on STIs before the 19-inch wheel was introduced.) The steering-responsive LED headlights on all STI trims definitely makes benefits night driving quite a bit, and one thing that pushed me towards the STI was how they only offered this option on the highest WRX trim.

    I bought a new WRX in April of 2002. After grenading the trans, having it fixed at a dealer then having more trans issues I bought a STi 6 speed. I will say out of all the mods I have made to my car the best and most enjoyable is the STi 6 speed. The closer gear ratios make taking corners in 2nd gear better cause 2nd gear in the 5 speed was to tall. Also having that LSD in the front and better center diff pulls the car hard out of corners. I would consider that a major difference that is worth the extra money.

    I own an Evo and am a die hard Evo fanboy, BUUUTTT there is so many more reasons to go STi over WRX than just the seats and differentials. There’s 1) differentials 2)resale value 3)transmission 4)factory brembos 5)hydraulic steering 6)shifter/clutch feel 7)better stock suspension
    However the ej25 does need to be updated, but when it does get updated you’re going to get the typical “it’s not an STi anymore” group of people just like you did with the Evo when Mitsu went to the 4B11

      I recently drove both. Very underwheelemd with the wrx. Was so disappointed. Expected to get let down by the STI. But I loved that car. It pull so much harder. Handled so much better. Everything just felt better in that car.

      @ HingleMcCringleBerry videos like this will lead to misinformation and people expecting to be "let down by STI". In fact I read it all the time exactly what you said, STI is much better driving experience, no comparison. That's why this STI roast video is so inaccurate.

    I looked long and hard between the current gen WRX and STi, and the main reason i chose the STi was for the drive line, it had LSDs front, centre and rear. My car is daily driven and it sees up to 6 track days a year so i liked the fact that i didnt need to buy after market LSDs and get STi brakes for the car.

    I agree with this review of the current WRX over STI. With one exception. The drive train is completely different. The WRX no longer has factory LSD differentials and relies on traction control to maintain grip, while the STI has mechanical differentials. That is the huge difference. For track or aggressive driving the STI is still the way to go. For daily driving, and occasional track days, the WRX will suite most people.

    Subaru may have released the S208 limited edition in Japan with their JDM exclusive EJ20 producing 324hp but they've lost their ways. In Japan, they had to recall most of their cars due to their quality-control inspection scandal this year. Also Subaru announced today that they will stop selling the WRX STI in Europe as well as UK markets (no WRXs here). The Collin McRae days it is not now.

    • @smilepermile888

      +Markez Singltary Yeah it sucks doesn't it. Because Mitsubishi didn't release an EVO XI and axed the EVO series, it didn't encourage Subaru to improve on its STIs much. 10-15 years ago, the Mk 1 Focus RS, Audi S3, BMW 130i, Golf R32 etc were slower cars than EVOs + STIs. But now the MK3 Focus RS, Audi S3, BMW M140i and MK7 Golf Rs are just as fast, if not faster than the EVOs + STIs

You can't deny the EJ of it's glory but the new FA20 is just so good with a turbo attached to it. Also, you cant act like you cant just add an intake, full exhaust and a tune and make 300AWHP for way less than an STI still haha

    You failed to mention that the STI also keeps the unequal length headers which the standard WRX loses along with the boxer rumble. The STI also retains hydraulic steering while the WRX goes with the less precise electric power steering.

    • @liambrennan6533
      @liambrennan6533 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Considering that equal length headers will have a performance benefit over UEL, i'd say that the WRX gains EL headers, rather than loses UEL headers.
      Unless you really want the sound there's no reason to use UEL headers apart from packaging.

    Your totally missing what makes the STI a more special car. It's not just about a motor. It's about the trans, brakes, suspension, steering, and most importantly the vastly superior differentials all around. Oh, and the sound... love the ej sound. The overall effect is a more raw feeling, high strung, analog car. Sure, it makes a pretty lousy city run-about, but it makes for an amazingly fun instrument of irresponsible behavior. For the price delta, you can't turn a WRX into an STI. So no, it's not just a difference of 3 letters. It's a different type of man-machine interaction.
