The WWE Championship is a world heavyweight championship created and promoted by the American professional wrestling promotion WWE, currently defended on their Raw brand division. It is one of WWE's top titles, alongside the Universal Championship on SmackDown. The current champion is Drew McIntyre, who is in his second reign. The original world championship of the promotion, it was established by the then-World Wide Wrestling Federation (WWWF) on April 25, 1963 as the WWWF World Heavyweight Championship, after the promotion seceded from the National Wrestling Alliance (NWA). The inaugural champion was Buddy Rogers. Since its inception, the title has undergone many name changes due to company name changes and title unifications. It is the oldest championship currently active in WWE, and is presented as being the promotion's most prestigious title, with many matches for the title having headlined pay-per-view events - including WWE's flagship event WrestleMania.[3] In professional wrestling in general, it is considered to be one of the most prestigious championships of all time.[4][5]
From its inception until 2001, it was promoted as WWE's sole primary championship. An additional world title, the WCW Championship, was added after the then-World Wrestling Federation's purchase of World Championship Wrestling in early 2001. The titles were later unified as the Undisputed Championship. After the first brand split in 2002 and the promotion being renamed to WWE, the championship became exclusive to SmackDown, and the World Heavyweight Championship was created for Raw. ECW became a third brand in 2006, adding the ECW Championship. That title was deactivated in 2010, and the World Heavyweight Championship was unified into the WWE Championship in 2013. The championship was again the sole world title of WWE until the introduction of the Universal Championship with the 2016 brand split. During both brand splits, the WWE Championship has switched brands, usually as a result of the WWE Draft; in 2019, the title moved to Raw after champion Brock Lesnar quit SmackDown following the events of Crown Jewel.

I'm old enough to remember when the WWE Title wasn't some trinket to pass around, it meant something and the titleholder was the face of the company. The belt gets stronger with every successful defense and weaker every time it changes hands. It should be for the face to hold for as long as he's the face. The IC title should be held by the worker and should change hands regularly.

It was held by Hogan for years. All these guys were long-time faces of the company. From 1963 to 1987 there were 9 champions over those 24 years. In the last 24 years there have been 107 champions. The title changed hands about ever 2 1/2 years between 63 and 87. It now changes more than 4 times per year. It's a trinket.
@@DireHammer you can't compare Sammartino's times with today, today there are a lot more wrestlers and storylines etc... While I agree that especially during 2010-2015 the major titles changed hands way too much and were given even to undeserving newbies making it lose a lot of prestigious, you can't expect someone today to hold the title for as long as Sammartino did or they will bury all the other stars instead of creating new ones.

There were two championship belts that were worn only during Hulk's initial four year reign starting in 1984. He won the big green belt from The Iron Sheik, and it was either later in 1984 or into 1985 that he switched to the silver-plated belt we saw at WrestleMania I. I want to say it was into 1986 that he switched to the belt that looked almost identical to the NWA World Tag Team Championship belts (he wore that one during WrestleMania II and III and the inaugural Survivor Series). He debuted the classic winged eagle belt in late 1987 or early 1988. That's the one he lost to Andre and was traded around for another decade. I liked that one and the one that replaced it during the Attitude Era. Here's wishing they would make a comeback!!

It was the 2nd most important title reign of 1998 behind Stone Cold because that 1 day reign planted the seed for the next 4 months with the collusion between Kane & Taker that headlined Fully Loaded, SummerSlam, Breakdown and No Mercy.
And added fuel between the brothers at Deadly Game.
The 1 day title reign made The Brothers of Destruction happen which was relevant for the rest of both their entire careers.

Ted DiBiase was never the champion. The title could only change hands by pinfall or submission, not from somebody just handing it to you. So as soon as Andre the Giant said the words "I surrender the belt" the title became instantly vacated.
