I did go ahead and change the piston ring. The compression was restored and the chainsaw is running great. A nice chainsaw! If you want to see a video on changing a piston ring, you can see a previous video th-cam.com/video/efC-hYqp1CU/w-d-xo.html . It is a different brand, but the process is the same.
solo was a german brand, now sold to ALKO in austria. the smalest series was 636 642 643, the second numbers are the ccm. the normal version had 3/8 1,3 chain and bars, the IP had 325 x1.5. the big Solo forest chainsaws have been comparable ingeneered with DOLMAR; f.e. Solo 681 and dolmar 7900
Hello, Really enjoy your videos. If I may add a small point you could have tried another spark plug just to rule out a fouled plug. The dirty carb might have caused the saw to run hot thus wearing out the ring. Like the way you trouble shoot. One question what was the solution in your cleaning tank, you didn't seem to mind getting it on your hands. Solo is not a cheap saw well worth paying you to replace the ring.
