I am a middle-aged powerlifter, and I am planning to begin training in karate; local classes start next week, and in my research on Funakoshi I came across these videos. I have a (possibly naive, but IMHO crucial) question regarding this and the 'beyond the dojo' precepts in particular: can I do the reverse, and will it benefit my training? That is, is it acceptable to apply the relevent lessons I have already learned from life into the dojo and my karate training, and will it improve my ability to learn all that karate teaches?

Hi! Welcome to the channel 👍 to answer your question: yes! Any skill of worth is transferrable, just yesterday I combined the skills I imagine a bodybuilder needs to flex and show off his body to train kihon and kata (I’d explain more, but that’s maybe more something for a video). Also, i use first-step explosion training in warm ups, something sprinters and football players would use (I actually have a video of that).

@@timthenunes Well, 'powerlifting' and 'bodybuilding' are almost like chalk and cheese (any 'aesthetics' are just a bonus in the former)... but I guess I could see the explosive power coming in handy in kumite. I'm more interested in the aspects derived from a fair chunk of life already lived (resistance to pressure, facing adversity, mental/physical discipline, etc.), and the potential positive effect that may (or may not) have on training, as opposed to someone starting as a child/teen (as I gather is more often the case).
