He's being strict so that the kids can learn to push themselves to their fullest and not believe everything will be okay because they tried. He learned when he was young that he had to put in the work effort to get the results he was looking for. And Yixing still to this day says he isn't satisfied with himself and believes there's always room for improvement. He just wants the best for these kids to show it won't always be easy and no one will just hand them a position in the top.

Well, do you blame him. Lay trained under SM. The biggest company in Korea for K-pop. K-pop the most perfectionist music genre and most competitive music market. He's probably seen the most talented bunch and been surrounded my extremly hard-working idols both from SM but outside SM. To him, this career path is no joke. He is expecting what all these SM producers and mentors expected from him and that is absolute discpline, work ethics and quality.

When he was a SM trainee, he trained so hard that he had a nickname "God of Practice/Training" (sr I don't know how to describe this word in English so :D). He trained so hard in the fight training way (tie sandbags and dance) that he injured his waist and he still suffered from that injury until now. His quote is "Work, work hard, work harder" and that's why he's a perfectionist or strict trainer like this. And OMG I love this hairstyle when he's strict like this I always remember "I'm the boss" like yassss baby you're the boss now goddamn!!! *screaming*
Honestly, I'm a bit scared ahaha I keep waiting for him to break out in a smile or a tiny laugh. I'm happy they have Yixing as a judge, if there's anyone who knows about singing, dancing and hard work, it's him.

The trainee will see that he’s a good dancer, but Lay looks at balance and pays attention to what people (possibly) consider small. When they’re on that show, doubting the mentors isn’t the brightest idea. They aren’t randomly chosen, they have been put in the same place. Especially Lay, who probably criticized them the most and is apart of the top 3 companies.

He may be strict but everything he said is true! He worked extremely hard when he was a trainee that's why he's where he's at right now. He knows all the things they need to be successful, he's also intelligent and has a passion for this. I'm so glad he's in this show, those trainees are so lucky to learn something from THE Zhang Yixing
Lay scared me when he started to talk lol, I have never seen this side of him, but being scare is what make them stronger. One thing is obvious, Lay has a very high standard of being a talented idol himself, so when he chooses a trainee, his requirement of them is to be at least have something that strike out. Also, Lay is trained from Korea, we know he wants the idol to reach that standard one day and prove that they can be as good as Korea's boy groups, I think that is a very good thing.

ju Rika he has a huge philosophy on working hard. He had to train for 3hours a day when he was a trainee he worked way way more than that. He is strict but probably more lenient on them than he is on himself. He is brutally honest. He will tell it the way it is.
I find that it's okay to be strict and the way he spoke to them, he given the details and what they can learn from this experience. These trainees will grow and work harder. The trainees are thinking it could be easy or might have been overconfident in their performances, we will see. But Lay had probably experienced this type of training and want to bring in that not everything is going to be easy as an entertainer if you don't work hard enough.
I really hope that all the trainees who are going to participate doesn't take any offense to any of his comments. Being criticized by one of the biggest, and top professional idols is a privilege and is going to prepare them in their future careers. Take it as a lesson, and for you to improve yourself. It is a rare to chance to be taught by Yixing.

We all know that Yixing is very hardworking. Remember when they were still trainees and ask baek if he'll practice if not he told him to get out. Listen, these kids should be thanking their lucky starts to have the opportunity to be seen and judged by Yixing. If they can't handle his critics then they're not ready. The entertainment industry will eat them up and spit them out in a blink of an eye, specially the Asian market! Yixing is not saying those things to be mean, he's saying what he's saying is because they NEEDED to hear it, he knows the game, he's successful on it! they need to be humble and remember the journey is just starting and there's soooo much they need to learn and improve to be able to become a good entertainer.
I can't wait to watch this side of him, this strictness here just meant that he took his job seriously as a mentor for these trainees.. I think Yixing is a perfect mentor. He's been through the tough trainee grind. He knows first hand how hard and competitive it is. You have to work your butt off and you should never be satisfied. Like Yixing, he always gives his 150%. He strives to be better than the day before and he remains humble and appreciative of all the opportunities he's been given. Never once has he taken anything for granted. He's literally the best role model for these kids!
I've read comments from all kpop criticizing yixing for being strict when he isn't that good himself. First of all, yixing acknowledged that he doesn't sing very well even when his fans think he does. That doesn't make him less of a producer because he had experienced being a trainee and he knew very well what it takes to become a star. I think he is doing is job well.

For those questioning his ways of teaching let me tell you without hesitation, a chinese trainee flew to Korea to become a kpop star. He had to fight for his debut spot from Koreas biggest entertainment company. He had doubts when his fellow chinese groupmates left their band. With him only the chinese member left in the group Im sure he struggled to shine. Communication with his groupmates was not easy since he flew back to China. He tried solo to keep his passion gor music and dancing strong. Thats Zhang Yixing for you. He had to endure all of those hardships just to gain respect from everybody in that industry. He is not even being strict for the sake of being STRICT. He just wants the trainees to reach their full potential but it comes off as strict.
if you going to enter this kind of show you need to be mentally prepared to accept what the judges going to say because they have more experience and know what needed to form a professional entertainer kudos to yixing for being a strict judge and giving honest opinion

It's better to just shut up and learn from his words, do not raise your voice and question his judgement because the man knows what he's doing. Being trained by sm entertainment, being part of a very successful group and having successful solo career in China. Don't take him easy, not everyone can do that unless they pushed their selves the same as how lay push himself.

You can have the perfect face, the perfect body, dancing is perfect, vocals perfect, etc but if you’re in your element and when people see you perform they’re inspired and they feel something, that’s when you really know you are good. It’s when you don’t even have to put much effort- it comes naturally. So yeah you can sweat your ass off and work until dawn and that helps tons, but the common factor that distinguishes really amazing performers from the rest is that they were born to do what they do.
Lay is being strict but it´s because he cares. I wished they had shown more of him caring for the trainees. I love when he goes and hug the guy that was crying at 02:34 min, but they didn´t give us a good look at it. Still, knowing Lay, we´ll be seeing this side of him as the programme continues

It's always refreshing to see any SM idols being a judge or mentors for something like BoA in kpop star and produce 101 s2, tao in produce 101 China, of course the video above and recently eunhyuk and the other guy(idr) in under 19. They always bring the best and never hold back on criticism.

I don't know how to feel about it. I mean, we all know Kpop idols train under immense pressure, and some can tend to starve themselves. Even the lesser known Kpop idols work as hard as Olympic athletes. Yes, Yixing has gone through it all, but are we more concerned about creating a "perfect idol" than preventing more faints from exhaustion and sufferers from depression? It feels like the cost of Kpop's high quality is health.

I think Yixing is a perfect mentor. He's been through the tough trainee grind. He knows first hand how hard and competitive it is. You have to work your butt off and you should never be satisfied. Like Yixing, he always gives his 150%. He strives to be better than the day before and he remains humble and appreciative of all the opportunities he's been given. Never once has he taken anything for granted.

First of all, yixing acknowledged that he doesn't sing very well even when his fans think he does. For those questioning his ways of teaching let me tell you without hesitation, a chinese trainee flew to Korea to become a kpop star. He had to fight for his debut spot from Koreas biggest entertainment company. He had doubts when his fellow chinese groupmates left their band. With him only the chinese member left in the group Im sure he struggled to shine. Communication with his groupmates was not easy since he flew back to China. He tried solo to keep his passion gor music and dancing strong. Thats Zhang Yixing for you. He had to endure all of those hardships just to gain respect from everybody in that industry. He is not even being strict for the sake of being STRICT. He just wants the trainees to reach their full potential but it comes off as strict.

You can have the perfect face, the perfect body, dancing is perfect, vocals perfect, etc but if you’re in your element and when people see you perform they’re inspired and they feel something, that’s when you really know you are good. It’s when you don’t even have to put much effort- it comes naturally. So yeah you can sweat your ass off and work until dawn and that helps tons, but the common factor that distinguishes really amazing performers from the rest is that they were born to do what they do.

I don't know how to feel about it. I mean, we all know Kpop idols train under immense pressure, and some can tend to starve themselves. Even the lesser known Kpop idols work as hard as Olympic athletes.
Yes, Yixing has gone through it all, but are we more concerned about creating a "perfect idol" than preventing more faints from exhaustion and sufferers from depression? It feels like the cost of Kpop's high quality is health.
