there is no need to speculate on the aging slowly theory. its canon. Rebecca Sugar herself said it in a podcast that both Lars and Lion are both aging very very slowly. they don't need to eat because their life processes are also very slow. they just like to eat because it's something familiar and comforting. They show this in the show by having Lars contently saying he is hungry when on the run after the trial but when he is brought back to life he notes he doesn't feel hungry anymore. Later when Steven visits him as a space pirate and brings him food its mostly just because he's homesick not because he needs to eat.

I know it was a joke about "animal abandonment" being another cruel aspect of Pink/Rose, but Lion was and continues to be a wild animal. He does not live with Steven or Connie in the series, and likely roams the wilds most of the time. I do not think Rose ever owned him, I am pretty sure she just healed a dying lion and the lion choose to visit her every now and then (aka why her stuff was in his mane). I always thought of Lion more as a champion who appears every now and then, rather than a pet.
Doesn't he have a bed in their house with his name on it? I always took his relationship to Steven and Connie to be like having an outdoor cat. Plus, he stayed with Connie when she was upset with Steven, and his absence was enough to strike Steven as unusual. Proof that he's around often enough most of the time.
Don't forget that Lion also seemed to have a "job" of sorts. Protecting the Desert Glass seemed like a fairly obvious one. Who knows what other things he protected of Rose's. Heck, he even knew where her secret vault was (something previously only known to Pearl.)

I don’t think so. Lion was a part in a pack, and rose was the boss. They were tame enough to not bite Steven or attack what his name that traveled all over to gem locations. They were taught by rose quartz. She tamed them. Sure, they did their own thing, but they looked up to rose, just as everyone else did. She was a leader. And when one of her lions died she couldn’t help but heal it. She started not being with them after years, and the rest of them died off. But not lion. Lion lived. He probably DID become lonely. Without a pack. Without a leader. So rose DID do pet abandonment also! In my theory at least.

I would disagree. In my theory, all the Lions died out, exept for the last one. I get that Rose made of alot bad decisions, but doesn't mean she would all the time. She isn't that selfish. Probably over the years the Lions died one by one, with rose excepting the life cycle. I Guess Rose couldn't take it anymore and saved the last one. She probably had the last one serve her in missions and help protect her monuments. The stuff in his mane was obviously for Steven, he would give those items when the boy was ready. Why would Rose just abandon her companion? It seems off. Yes she abandoned spinel for a reason, but what good will abandoning a lion do for Rose? As the video said, Lion just did his thing. Then Steven found him, and that probably told Lion that the boy was ready.
I also think Lion is a form of animal therapy. The way that Lion shows unconditionally love for Steven and is right there for him with that love through all the trauma and revelations about his mother. Lion loves Steven no matter what his mother did, no matter who he becomes, no matter what he's done. Like in Steven Universe: Future when (spoiler alert) Steven transform back into himself after being the monster and Lion is the first one to greet him with all that love. Even though he was just a monster and he believed himself to be one, Lion just like all his friends and family sees him as Steven. Animal therapy is so important especially when a person goes through changes having that constant love of a pet is a reassurance that no matter what you do or who you become you are still worthy of love.
I think the same! I noticed that the further into future and unstable steven got, the less we saw of lion during it, it might be nothing though
You can say that again, Jayda Mechele! I once heard a real life story where someone was suicidal and about to jump from their apartment window, but their cat rubbed against their legs snapping them back to reality.... in short, their cat gave them one of its 9 lives!

Vilmu Blues I agree imagine if your best friend/huge crush goes away to college and they become too busy to have time for you. Even if lion could teleport him there, Connie could still become emotionally distant.
I think the reason that lion's tree has less leafs then lars's is because thier different types of trees. Lion's tree looks like an acacia tree and lars's tree could be an oak tree or some other deciduous tree. Another idea is that lion died when he was a cub, which is not uncommon, and the trees stop growing when the idividual dies hence why the acacia is so small copaired to a fully grown one and has so little leaves. Lions become adults when they reach 1 year of age so lion could have died as he tuned 1, give or take a month when lars died at 16-18 so lars's mind tree had longer to grow.
It would also make sense that Lion's tree would be an (African) Acacia tree while Lars' would be a (Philipino) Narra tree. I think their origins has more to do with it than theoretical aging, personally. I wouldn't be surprised if there are elements of that symbolism as well, but that Lion's tree is occasionally found in the Sahara and that Lars' is the national tree of the Philippines tells me this is more about consistency than symbolism.
No, we can't add "animal abandonment to this list of shady things rose has done" at all. Lion has always been a self-sufficient, nearly immortal character who is often off doing his own thing. He doesn't need to eat, doesn't seem to need consistent attention and is easily capable of taking care of himself. For all we know, Lion CHOSE to go out to the desert before Rose died, seeing as he consistently disappears and wanders off throughout the show.
I love Lion! I think he is being a good emotional support for Connie at that time. Steven is not treating Connie well and Lion knows it. I never see him as abandoned. He does what he wants too. I'm also watching SU on loop! No judgement here! 😉 I have been catching up on the theories from TH-camrs. I've also been getting great insight from the comment sections. I like that I'm picking up more in this 3rd go around. Each time I watch it I get something new from it. That's why I love it! Thank you for great content!
i dont think rose meant to abandon lion honestly. my idea is that he passed away, rose cried and left his body somewhere (I wouldn’t imagine she knew what burying was) and her tears resurrected him after she left. I think it would take an amount of time for him to resurrect because it would most likely be the first time she would resurrect an organic being, and i think because she isnt 1/2 organic it would take more time.
I don't think it counts as "animal abandonment" when it's fairly obvious that Lion was a loyal guard of Rose's secret locations and that Desert Glass.k

Lions are also featured in heraldry and associated with royalty, which makes sense given Pink's former status in Gem society

It's really interesting how lion shares certain powers with rose/ pinkD while possessing his own unique abilities. Like how they both have a sonic scream while the portal power seems unique to lion.
A ton of people figured out that lion was revived by rose and it was pretty obvious.

Commenting in the tree thing, Lion's tree always reminded me of the trees in Lion King. It seems more similar to one found in the savannah, where lions typically roam. Whereas Lars' tree looks more like a typical suburban tree so more reflective of where he came from.

I think the only symbolism Lion has to Rose/Pink is that he's the first proof of Rose actually caring about the wellbeing of something else and understanding their death.
That's the only problem with Pink, to me. It's just she was raised her whole loke being told that she's seperate from everybody because she's DIAMOND. No ordinary gem can talk to a Diamond freely but Pink isn't respected as an equal with the other Diamonds. So no one was really real to her, you know? She can't emotional connection to anything. So THAT'S why she treated Pink Pearl, Spinel, and even herself like that. No one was real. Life had no significance.
But then she saw her first humans. And started to realize that death is real. The Gems weren't created from nothing, their life is stolen from other living things. Rose was symbolic of this realization. Pink starting fighting for the unfairness of the Empire. But still, she hadn't completely realized what death was. We can tell this based on how she started t he gem war without a second thought.
But looking at how Steven turned Lars, let's us know that Rose was GENUINELY upset by Lions's death, enough to shed a tear. Then Rose met Greg. And she fell in actual love. The final point that shows Rose fully understanding life AND death and the significance of both is when she decided the give up her own life to create another. Steven.
Steven is a solid example of Pink's and Rose's transformation because neither Pink nor Rose would've given their lives for another. But Steven would, and does. Constantly. Steven is Pink Diamond in the way that Rose Quartz is Pink Diamond.

Or maybe he was targeting Steven's sleeping hours because he wouldn't have to use force? I like the first one though.
6:47 Actually its more likely Lion’s tree is stylized after trees native to parts of Southern and Eastern Africa where lions live. I think theyre called Shangayi? Itd make sense since Lion is an African animal and Lars’ being from North America has a more American looking tree.

I say you guys pretty much covered everything Lion represents to the Steven Universe story. I kind of like that Lion was more forward and honest with Steven about things his mother left behind when Garnet and Pearl couldn't. Not that Pearl could even if she wanted to, and Garnet with just has left in the dark as everyone else.
Love it. I'm a big fan of Lion &his subtlety. I would love an episode of mostly Lion & Lars, Pink Bois.

To answer Kris question of what I have been watching.
I've been watching The Simpsons I finished the first season a couple days ago. Been watching one episode since December on the date the episode was released.
I was watching the first Lupin the third anime from the early 70s for a couple of weeks on Tubi tv. But I had let my sister borrow the Mac I was watching on.
Last I was watched The Slumber party massacre trilogy within a week.

Another comparison Ive felt in my bones about Lion is that hes basically Steven Universe’s closest to a legendary Pokemon. Specifically the Legendary Beasts Entei and Suicune. Him running on water has always screamed Suicune to me. & Entei as hes Steven’s close companion.

I know you were talking about lion but something came to mind about Rose/Pink. She never had an Equal. She was always beneath the Diamonds, acted bratty and immature. As Rose she was idolized. Both never thought things through, or faced the consequences of their actions. She Never had an Equal to relate talk with and face those consequences. I wonder what it would have been like if Rose felt personally responsible for something she did and faced the consequences of her actions.

I think when Rose had the pack of lions I think lion died and rose was crying like Steven did too Lars and bring lion back to life so now they are basically connected since Steven can go in lions mane to Lars mane.
What If lion's pack or the other 6 lions with rose got hurt and she healed them but they might have got lost or died or maybe she only healed lion or lion was the only one hurt and he had to watch them die in the desert or that's were they died so maybe that's why lion was so sad or mad or even just didn't want to go or be there.

Re: more SU content - what about a retelling of Pink diamond? Is she perhaps the actual protagonist? Like could she be the most human character? I see her as someone who just wanted to discover who she was and what she wanted. And hurt people along the way - but who hasn’t done that, voluntarily or unwittingly?
I think the leaves are because of the trees are different species, I have a lot of questions about pink diamond's affects on lion and what happens that made him pink.
