You're incredible! As well as easy on the eye. A load of info like a pro. I owned the original good old fashioned Rancilio. Glad to see they upped their game especially with a dual boiler. I have owned the Rocket Apartamento heat-X. It was a sexy beast but in the end too many problems. Thanks, I'll be back.
What an excellent review. It was just the right amount of well informed discussion and entertainment - I loved the machine startup alarm clock!! And I really appreciated your clear disclosure at the end about the context of your review. Thanks!!
Ooh sometimes I wish I had waited for the matte black one. They only had the stainless silver one in stock. Glad you enjoyed the review and have fun with your Pro X!
the design is perfect. It isn't wide so takes up less counter. And my wife doesn't get mad thinking I spent thousands of dollars on a fancy looking machine. ;) I had a ver1 for 10 years, these things are built like a tank and all parts are available online. Solid performer for a decade.
@@bluemystic7501 when I had my kitchen remodel I had the choice of top cabs that were reachable or that went to the ceiling. I went for cabs to the ceiling for this reason and not having to clean the top of lowered cabs.
I upgraded to this from a breville pro something whatever. One of the entry level ones with the grinder in it. I was able to get a bundle with a eureka grinder for $1800. Got the last one left. Im sure i'll notice a huge difference. YOur editing and pace of the video is better than some channels that have 4X the subs you have.
I've got my Silvia for about a week now, installed the accessories bundle and dispersion plate from Pantechnicon Design, an IMS shower screen and a Cafelat silicone gasket and lowered the pressure to about 6.5 bars of static pressure and also upgraded to a Niche Zero grinder. This setup is the most beautiful I've ever had and I am so happy about the espresso that I can produce with it. The only things that bother me is that even the 3D printed replacement drip tray from Pantechnicon Design needs to be emptied frequently due to its capacity, that there is no LED light next to the group head and that the soft infusion is limited to 6 seconds only. But that is about it. It is probably the maximum that I can afford but I don't feel that I will miss anything in my espresso game for the next couple of years. It feels like a rock solid gaming PC that I can modify, adjust and repair myself. And I love the design that reminds me of an 80s workshop utility. I am so in love with it. ❤😊 Btw. I've got mine in white.
I upgraded to it just yesterday, waiting for it to arrive. For me it was the only choice for making perfect shots at home. No pressure issues, no temp issues. Just design flaws.
Hi Charlie. Thank you for a solid review - arguably the best review to date! And thank you for your comment on "time to 1st shot". Cannot believe that people wait 20 minutes, if 5 minutes will do just fine. With a bit of luck, our 230V power grid (Cape Town, SA) might also speed up things, compared to 110V 🤔 So only decision left then is, Stainless Steel vs Black 🙂
Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I would go black. I asked them for it but they said it would be another month or two, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it lol. Did I make a mistake? Who knows! 😅
Awesome work, man. Love my SPX. I'm 3 months in with mine and haven't had a single hiccup and use it everyday for about 6 drinks and at least once a week as hard as your livestream. I generally tend to let mine warm up a bit longer than 5 minutes, just until both boilers are fully up to temp- usually 20 minutes just to aide in thermal stability. Thanks for commenting on the sound! We recently had a baby and there have been a few nights that I slept about 20 feet from the machine; my smart plug fires it up at 5am and that initial run of the pumps is jarring! I think the biggest competitor for this is really the La Spaziale Dream/Lucca series. The Elizabeth just doesn't have the track record of reliability over time (Lelit is a MUCH newer company and now owned by Breville) vs. these and certainly isn't even close on the build quality. The Dream/Lucca can have a preinfusion kit installed from the factory and ticks most of the same boxes for slightly more money (around $2000). Forr the 'junior' series dual boilers, these are my picks for longevity hands down. Breville Dual Boiler would be my pick for value:fun ratio, if I didn't need a machine to last me 10 years. Not sure if you mentioned it but the automatic backflushing is a really excellent feature I use daily on my machine. Appreciate the work! Also, did you mention if this was a paid review from Rancilio or if you were given the machine vs. paid for it with your own money?
Thanks so much for your comment! I forgot to mention the long press of the brew switch to do a flush, super useful! At the end I mentioned Rancilio sent it to me for free but didn't pay me for the review. But I love the machine and enjoying it a lot!
@@homecafecharlie Ahh, missed it! Awesome. Thanks for the transparency and high quality work as usual! Sidebar, very jealous of your access to JDM everything- an aspect of your life I’m sure you’ve grown very accustomed to but to us Americans is quite enviable!
If it really disturbes you, get two membrane regulators and have them installed to the pumps. Should reduce the pulsing sounds significantly. I did not do with my machine but saw that others did (a common mod also for other machines)
Hi do you have any thoughts on the profitec go.... I know its a single boiler but It has PID and its Easy to adjust pressure ... I want to upgrade but I can decide between Silvia pro x and Profitec go 😅
You show the stainless steel bottomless portafilter of the Rancilio RS1. I don't believe you are able to fully heat up this PF in 5 minutes (as you're saying at 01:50). That being said, I mostly second your findings with my own Pro X. Nice video! Unfortunately, RS1 bottomless PF is not available anymore. Only choice is the standard chromed brass bottomless now, which is mostly fine. But it has a non-rubberized handle with some sharp edges at the transition to the end cap. I solved it with some sanding fabric and can live with it now
I'm considering this as dual boiler upgrade from an Ascaso Steel Uno PID. Also the insulated steam wand, at least on the Ascaso, is just a plastic tube inside the stainless steel tube, some people might not like that. Thanks for the video.
Probably not plastic but Teflon. But still the usual low budget 'no burn', hat I am happy, the Pro X has NOT. Pros of not having that: Better steam, nicer movement of the steam wand. I am coming from a machine which had 'no burn' and did not miss it at the Pro X one single day
You're going to love it! It's such an amazing machine, I especially love the thermal stability for pulling really consistent shots. If you have any questions about it, join my discord and send me a message 😉
Sounds like a smokin deal. That price tho. I would consider it because I do love my regular original Silvia. 20 years old and trusty. I do my own pre-infusion by popping the brew button for a few seconds then wait 10 sec. then brew. Works like a charm. We acquired a gaggia retro and that is so simply made and parts galore. I need to rebuild it. The Silvia has parts all over the place too and super well supported. I support the good brands. I was hatting my loud sette 270wi and sent it back for $150 to get a rebuild and now it's quite quiet. Well supported no fuss. Parts are all over for those too. Win win win. TY coffee gods for keeping a thriving industry. Just don't make a subscription wifi for a feature on your machines ;) Like remote start on a car.
I do my own pre-inf as well. I just turn it off and count to six. What's the big deal? We owned a basic single boiler for twenty years. It was a little tank. The newer Rancilio seemed to be shorted on fabrication so I quickly got rid. This one is right at on the needle of my budget as I currently own a single boiler with thermo cover Quick Mill Silvano. It aint bad.
3:28 that is one cool cup !. question, do you still need to bring the temperature down after you steam the milk ? i.e. run the water, until light goes on. do that all the time with the V6 silvia.
I'm 3 weeks living with my new roomates, Ms. Silva along with Mr. Baratza and learning each day how to improve the process. Thank you for the helpful tips to help me get started.
This is the machine that I have been thinking of and this review has confirmed my thoughts. I agree that the pressure dial could be better located - maybe they were concerned about making the front panel too cluttered - and the drip tray, with its risk of spillage, is poor. The heat-proof steam wand is also an oversight. But the main thing is that the coffee is great, heats up quickly and it’s relatively simple to use - buttons rather than dials and levers.
The machine is absolutely incredible. I was a little hesitant but nearly 1 year on, My only regret was not buying it early. My life changed buying this machine
It has an automated turn on setting?! OMG. I always, always wake up at 6:20 Am so to have the machine turn on at the same time I do is a game changer for me. My Silvia V1 (!!) died on me this week and I need a replacement. One cup with old Silvia took me 15 to 20 minutes start to finish; this machine appears to shave off at least minutes off of that. Meaning: time to exercise a bit, or sleep in.
I was between the profitec 700 and this but after hearing the warranty isn't voided if the chassis is opened, this wins. Small things go wrong, I'd hate to be out of my machine for weeks for something minor I can fix myself.
Great video, Charlie! Wondering if you could try to hack the soft infusion (make it longer than 6 sec) by stopping/interrupting your shot right at the 6 sec mark, before the 9 bar pressure kicks in, and subsequently starting a new shot cycle, essentially initiating soft infusion #2. I just ordered this machine and can't wait to start a new chapter. I'm retiring my old Breville DB after 10 yrs. Cheers!
What a novel idea! I hadn't thought of that. Give it a try and let me know if it works. I had to sell my machine when I left Japan (it was the wrong voltage for UK)
@@homecafecharlie it's quiet and fast, there retention is excellent and the grinds don't come out clumpy. Plus it's far heftier than I was expecting, it's a two hand operation to pick it up and move it. I had an Ascaso conical burr for years and it was loud, took forever, the retention was horrible and it was messy... so my coffee making experience has been greatly upgraded, while the shots I pull have been as well. What's really nice is that you have the option of upgrading the burrs in the future, which I'm not sure is always possible with conical machines. I love, love the DF64, and you simply cannot beat that price.
I have my eye on a gaggia classic for entry level affordable espresso but thanks for the very informative video. Definitely sad they didn’t fix those things like the drip tray or how the steam wand sprays unless it’s in a cup. I saw gaggia’s are like $500 and never really considered one but suddenly I thought why not. Also looked at the $850 Silvia now you’ve got a new one the Pro X that’s cool. Glad you’re liking it. Looks fun. The Decent is limited to a minimum of 4 seconds preinfusion. I always disliked preinfusion until the DE but that’s cool to see how it’s useful in getting an even extraction. I didn’t know that cool 😎. Wasabi 🤙
Wasabi to you too, good sir 😉 The Pro X is definitely a huge step up from the Silvia (and of course Gaggia). So happy with my upgrade, my daily experience is so much nicer!
Great video! I have a question about soft infusion, can you start the shot with 6 second soft infusion and then hit brew switch to stop it before pump turns on? I was wondering if turning it off would allow it to bloom more and then you could restart shot with pressure?
Nice video! I have one comment: with preinfusion on, there will usually be a faster flow, so you would need to grind finer for the shot to look similar. So, your comparison at 7:51 is not really apples-to-apples - maybe a similar effect as the right picture could be obtained from the left picture by grinding coarser? It is not clear to me that the left picture shows more channeling, just a slower flow.
Hehe, the Kruve Imagine cup. I put a link in the description. I love these cups, so fun to make coffee for other people, they always feel like it's extra premium coffee in one of these 😋
The breville (sage) dual boiler is also a pretty solid machine. I prefer the Silvia Pro X, but remember to save as much of your budget for your grinder as possible.
HI Charlie great review, just have a question about the hot water dispenser. I have seen a clip of the machine making a lot of noise after dispensing hot water. It sounds like the boiler is being filled. I was hoping with this machine I would get rid of my kettle and use the hot water dispenser instead. Just don't worry about the noise level if wanting to use the hot water dispenser at night.
Yes it pulls water from the steam boiler and will probably refill it after use. It also can't dispense a big mug worth of hot water easily. It would probably run out if you had a giant 500ml+ mug or wanted to make 2 cups of tea. I would say a kettle would be much cheaper to consistently run 😉
Excellent review!! I love my Pro X but I am still struggling with getting the milk right. Finally signed up for a latte art class. By the way, are you still enjoying the pre infusion feature? Is it better than using a puck screen and if you use it, do you increase the shot time (eg from 25-30s for 18g in 36g out to 30-35s with a 5s pre infusion?)
Hey, thanks for the comment! I don't have the Silvia Pro X anymore unfortunately. I sold it when I left Japan because it was a 110v machine and the UK is 230 and would require a BIG (and expensive) transformer to operate, plus shipping costs back to England, so I sold it. But I loved the soft pre-infusion and basically always used it, and yes I do measure it in my shot times, but I often pull slightly slower shots (35-40s) cos I like a slightly higher extraction.
You could have mentioned that the black metal frame of this and all other Rancilio Silvias is made from stainless steel since 2020. For a good night's sleep, nothing will rust there anymore
could the silvia pro x withstand a high pace espresso shot output for a small cafe? if not, what machine would you reccomend in or around that price point
Hard to know but I think the boilers are a bit too small to keep up with a demanding cafe. Usually getting a machine with 2 groups is much better. But if you are space limited I've seen quite a few cafes with a Sanremo YOU in them.
@@homecafecharlie my operation is more of a small cart with an additional auto drip and urn for hot water or tea. i don't expect to sell all espresso but would this machine be capable of maybe cranking out 10 to 15 shots at a time without fail?
@@sagedorantes2766 15 shots at a time? Not sure what this means, but it can go shot after shot. I think I tested it with 5 shots and didn't see much of a drop in temperature, but you'll want to plumb it in so you don't need to refill the tank.
@@homecafecharlie awesome. yes 15 shots at a time as in shot after shot. yes i'd plumb it so i wouldnt have to keep refilling. since its european is the electrical outlet different? i'm in the USA
It's a standard 18g basket, but the commercial portafilter that comes with it is deep and can fit up to a 21g basket (I think they call this a triple for some reason). Should have mentioned this in the video... so much to talk about in a long video like this 😅
Thanks for your review Charlie! I trust your latte skills and have a question, what are your thoughts on dual thermoblocks (machine such as the Ascaso Steel Duo) versus dual boilers? Do you think you would get good results too with thermoblocks or is dual boiler a must have according to your experience?
Thermoblocks are definitely not as powerful as full steam boilers. I've never used one that gave me enough power to consistently do quality latte art. It's definitely possible but it's a handicap for sure. The more machines I review, the more I realise that it's much easier to do latte art with bigger and more expensive machines... 😅
Hi I bought this same machine after watching your video! I was wondering if you could tell me your coffee dose/recipe for a latte. I'm practicing latte art too! Thanks.
Hi Hiroshi. I have a few videos on latte art on the channel. I find it's a little bit easier to pour if you pull a ristretto shot (1:1 ratio). You get a thicker crema so it's easier to pour onto
I am debating between this or the Profitec Pro 300 or Ascaso Steel Duo???? I do want a machine that can heat up quick and makes shot quick for when I am going to work in a hurry. The Rancilio does not have a Dual Insulated steam wand???...surprising for a 2000 machine and you can't program it?
Yeah there's a lot more competition at this price now. Ascaso is one I would like to try more. Steam is still a bit feeble so for me it's not ideal as I love to pour latte art.
@@homecafecharlie I narrowed it down to the Rancilio or Profitec.......but looks like the profitec is the one i will get. You get more for you money and its less expensive, designed in Germany and italian made. The Ascaso...lacks in the steam department, it has thermoblocks so not as good as a boiler. I do want a machine that can produce great steam. The Profitec takes about 5 minutes to heat up, it has smaller boilers and built like a tank.
It's been a year since your video, I know. But I'm now looking to upgrade my 6 years old Silvia and I'm looking at both Silvia pro x and Profitec go that Is a bit cheaper at the moment, It is a single boiler but still have PID and its very Easy to adjust pressure .... What would you do? I love how they look both. Please help ❤
Both are great choices but honestly once you go dual boiler it's hard to go back. So good to be able to make multiple drinks back to back without having to heat up for steam
Charlie, just subscribed. Any chance you could do some more steam wand videos? I switched from a Breville to this machine and am now constantly overheating my milk or losing it to froth. Would be helpful to understand your wand position, seconds left in, and if you dip it after grabbing air at first.
@@homecafecharlie also would be good to get links how on to get different tips! Can’t find a single or double tip anywhere for the pro! Thanks a million!
@@grant88889 Not sure if you are still looking for steam tips but the tips are the same size as their commercial units. So if you find any website selling tips for Rancilio commercial units and they have 2 hole 3 hole and even different hole sizes it doesn't matter they will fit the wand. Just be careful the length of the tips do vary some are half inch long to 2 or 3 inches long. That might not be what you are looking for in a home unit.
Hi! Awesome review. Have you opened it? Could you tell me where does the capillary that reads the pressure is placed in the pump to group line? Is it just after the opv or just after the pump? Thanks!!
I’m asking that because I’m thinking to modify my Silvia Pro I’m willing to put a pressure gauge and a dimmer in order to be able to pressure profile my shots…
I have opened it but I am not an engineer and don't really know what to do inside this machine. I wouldn't wanna mess with it and damage it by mistake 😅
I don't remember and I just moved back to the UK and had to sell the machine (wouldn't work on UK power). I think it does but better to check a 3d image of it
Hi Charlie, I am planning to buy the Silvia Pro X and was wondering whether you adjusted the brew pressure on yours? I'd love to lower it to about 6.5 bars but didn't find anything about that on the internet… 😱
@@homecafecharlie Do you miss it or did you find a proper replacement? I am in love with the machine for months now and theoretically know everything about it as I watched and read all the reviews, lol. 😅 I first felt in love with the Gaggia Classic's design but I don't wanted to buy one and mod the hell out of it. Then I found the Rancilio which has a somehow similar appearance and all the specs that I wanted on top and felt immediately in love with it. 😁 Happy new year btw. and all the best from Germany 😉
@@3ede467 Happy New Year! Yes I miss my Pro X. It was just such ba reliable and consistent machine. I was dialling in so quickly by the time I left Japan and I could always rely on it because of the consistency of the group, unlike the HX machine I am using now while I save up to get my main.
I like the classic look. Frankly I think a lot of machines look over wrought Fwiw, I have started using a puck screen. I find it keeps the group head much cleaner. I would probably buy the new Silvia right now. Except that it seems too large for my counter top… sigh
@@homecafecharlie Sorry I overlooked the description section. Tysm, actually that's also the website I was considering (alphaespace), good to know it does deliver! May I ask how long did the shipping take? Also may I ask where you purchased your bottomless portafilter? I'm inclined to purchase the same model since you've shown yours works perfectly with Silvia Pro X. Tysm and sorry for lots of questions 🙏
I'm not sure how often you look. I just bought one and when I have the machine on and it's at temperature the gauge shows 9 bar, then when I pull a shot it drops to 6 bar, rather than the ramp up shown in this video. Ideas?
Could be your puck prep - it's a 9 bar OPV (over pressure valve) but if you aren't grinding fine enough it won't get there cos there isn't enough resistance from the coffee.
@Home Cafe by Charlie thank you for the tip. My grinder came broken so I asked the local shop to grind a bag to espresso consistency, May have been a mark course.
I haven't! I don't have access to lots of machines like some of the other YT channels done by coffee equipment distributors, so I can basically only test stuff I buy or borrow. Espresso machines are expensive, but I'd love to try one if I can
@@homecafecharlie yeah i understand. I dont watch reviews from coffee machines sellers, cos those are biased. But the BB has a double boiler which sounds very appealing to me.
I just upgraded myself from a Silvia, to the Pro X. unfortunately the water coming out of the machine, both the hot water valve and group head seems to have a fairly strong smell. It also is not clear, but milky looking. Did you experience anything like that from your Pro X, when you first got it? Is it just a matter of flushing the machine more? Do you always use the water softening pouch, that comes with the machine? I was wondering if that is the culprit of the problem. I always use filtered water, so the water is clean before it goes in the machine. Before purchasing I had watched your videos. I'd appreciate your advise. thanks
Definitely not normal. Did you buy second hand or refurbished? Could be calcification in the boiler, but I couldn't know without seeing for myself. Definitely not normal. Try putting a few litres of water through the machine, and if that doesn't work try a descaler (like DEZCAL). Contact the company you bought it from, they might be able to replace it. Very strange. Mine was brand new and after I put a few litres through it everything was fine. The pouch is only if you live in a place with hard water
@@homecafecharlie Thanks for your swift reply. The machine is brand new, straight out of the box. I'll try to run more blind runs and to descale it. However I was apprehensive about descaling it right away, since I couldn't find any information about descaling the Pro in the manual or online. Do you descale your boilers on your machine, by filling descaling solution in the water tank? Thanks again for your quick response.
@@TheSnarestrainer Yes I descale! For most places (depending on water) its necessary to maintain the machine and stop it getting clogged up. Just don't go away and leave the descaler in there too long. Tons of videos on YT how to do this ;)
You shouldn't need to descale a new machine though. Try putting 10 litres through it, and if it is still off, it could be a fault and I would talk to the place you bought it from.
@@homecafecharlie Thanks for taking the time to reply. In the meantime I even had another serious issue with the machine. I got the error code E01, which means that there is an issue with the water supply to the steam boiler. After much research, buying of new tools I was able to figure out how to take out the water valve for the steam boiler. A fairly big piece of plastic was stuck in the valve, preventing it from closing. It seems from my experience that these machines are really carelessly assembled without much attention to cleanliness. It's scary to think about what is floating around in the inside of a pressurized and hot boiler. Anyways I hope that after all this the machine will no perform without any further hiccups. sadly the first week was not what I hoped for :( Thanks again for taking the time to reply.
I'd recommend something like the DF64 like I had, or a Niche Zero. Depends on if you prefer clarity (flat burr DF64) or texture (conical burr Niche). Bunch of other grinders on the market but those 2 you can't go wrong 😉
I think the machine comes with it in Europe, but you should be able to buy from local espresso parts shops or online. I got mine from the manufacturer so I'm not sure 😉
Hi Charlie, I am interested in this machine however, I'd like to know your thoughts on the Brass Brew Boiler. I've heard that Brass might contain Lead. I know the Steam boiler is made up of Stainless Steel. There are other videos that say the Brass has no Lead is this true. Does it say anything in the User Manuals?
I'm fairly sure it has been illegal to put lead over a safe amount for decades, so I wouldn't worry about this. I guess if you got a really old vintage machine it might be an issue, but that's not going to affect any modern machines like the Pro X.
@@homecafecharlie Will any Standard 58 MM Portafilter Like the E61 Potrafilter Fit the Silvia Pro X or does it have to be a Portafilter by Rancilio specifically made for Silvia Pro X ?
Yes it has a universal toggle, so if you turn it off it will stay off (and won't heat up with the machine next time), and if you turn it on it will also be on by default when you switch on the machine next time.
I'll know more soon. They sent me the US version for the review, but soon I can say more. Make sure you're in my Japan Coffee Lovers group on FB, they will give me a discount code for my group soon 😉
@@homecafecharlie I mean if the pump turns off automatically at a set time. I have the Silvia V1 and I'm basically frozen for 25 seconds watching my scale with the hand on the pump switch lol. I can't imagine steaming while looking at the scale.
Yeah, this is one thing I noticed (coming from a Breville), that one can't do a preset time for the shot. It's not a deal breaker, but it would have been a nice-to-have, especially for when my wife's using it. I'll probably forget to stop the shot on those sleepy mornings when my brain still thinks I'm working on the Breville. 🙃
I had to sell it when I left Japan. I moved back to the UK and the voltage here is different. But I miss the machine. It was amazing, super consistent, temps were always perfect and I got some of the best espresso ever. Just a workhorse that did consistently great espresso every day.
@@homecafecharlie Great to hear. I hope the transition home was more sweet than bitter. I'm always curious about YT influencers like yourself, if someone handed you $2k for a machine, what would we see in your kitchen? Cheers!
@@MrAndrew60 Right now $2k for a machine would be a really hard choice. So many great machines at that price range, but none that meaningfully go above what I have now. I would probably put extra money into the pool and get a Decent DE1Pro. So much I want to do with that machine.
what temperature reach the milk? I'm having issues with steam because it runs off too quickly when the milk is just 45°C, if I keep "steaming" there's little steam with lot of water and I cant' get good silky milk. I didn't have that problem with my silvia v3 with pid. Not linking my upgrade to pro x so far.
Which steam hole tip do you have? I'm guessing it's the four hole steam tip. It might be using up the reservoir too quickly. I'd suggest getting the three hole or even the one hole steam tip, which might take a little bit longer but won't use all the steam too quickly.
Great questions. I think the standard they use for testing is 14 shots back to back. So a LOT, more than most baristas could do at that speed. As for tier, it's gonna be S or A. Hard to say cos I love it, but I know it's not for everyone (especially the industrial design)
@@homecafecharlie I think you changed my mind on what I was considering now I think I’m going to get this to start as I save for a Decent, thanks for the great videos. Looking forward to your next ones.
@@homecafecharlie My early pick was Silvia pro simply for Rancilio's quality. Since Silvia was about equal to $300 more in here, so I went for Elizabeth instead. It's been almost a year, lowered the pressure a bit(it came with just under 10bars) and I am still happy with my decision. I wonder if pro x out of the box set with desired pressure.
Where do you get these in Japan? Or do you just import from Amazon US? Even if you can find these machines here (tokyo) I can't imagine say bic would give a decent price...
Such a great review! Thanks so much for this! I also have a Silvia and am searching for a dual boiler, so was really looking forward to this video :) So glad to hear you've loved it so much, and you may just have convinced me! I was so disappointed to hear they haven't changed the drip tray, and also the water tank size, but as you said, not really a huge deal. A couple of questions for you: 1) Do you know exactly when it will be available in Japan, and where? 2) Sadly it is, but if money were less of an object, and you had, say, twice the budget, would you still go for this? If not, are you able to say what you'd go for? Thanks as always!
In Japan they are going through the importing process now, so soon I hope. If my budget was double I might consider a Decent DE1Pro, but it's a totally different machine. For the price the Pro X is outstanding, I really can't complain 😎
@@homecafecharlie Thanks for the quick response! Got it about the importing process! Interesting about the Decent DE1Pro. I'm personally not all that interested in all the analysis stuff, so not super interested in that machine. A barista I met at a cafe recently told me he'd really recommend the Simonelli Appia, but I think that might be going above the "double budget" range... I don't know your experience with that, or the Rocket Appartamento machines, but do you have any thoughts on those?
Man, the Kopi Deva would look so much better next to the Silvia than the DF64. Also it is better imo, having had the DF64 before the Kopi Deva (Grinding result and build quality).
@@homecafecharlie minute 11:00. The rubber seal its supposed to be put directly on the porta filter without the basket with the little flat part facing down.
@@mjriguero then that's also a bit of a pain because taking the basket out is pretty annoying. I usually just use the blind basket from my old Silvia in the bottomless (easier to remove)
I think they should have updated and modernized the design. It would have swayed me. As it is, it’s just too utilitarian. Also, a no burn steam wand at this price point should be there as well.
I just checked out a video. It looks fun, I'd like to play with one - so weird that it has like a speaker/vent looking thing on the side... But I'm sure its a fun machine!
Would love to play with one, but looking at pictures I think the Pro X is nicer looking. But it's a coin toss. Does the Elizabeth have the temperature stability? That's changed my espresso more than anything!
Might be better tech inside. But the way to use it is clunky. The better option would be of been BT to phone, allowing much easier interaction of function's.
I could have afforded the Marcozzo micra but chose this instead. The fact that the Marcozzo locks features behind an app and internet/Bluetooth connectivity was a complete deal breaker. I want something I can use and pass down without having to worry about app updates and support. I don't want to have to grab my phone to adjust my machine.
More than twice the price of a normal Silvia. Another let down the vibration pump makes a lot of noise. To adjust the boiler pressure is very laborious. Again the diptray is very clumsy. The steamwand isn't insulated. Limited pre infusion. At this price tag I am expecting both more improvements and refinements.
This is my first espresso machine .. I bought before two weeks .. untill now guest I make bad espresso .. timing and beans ok .. but test very bad .. I used 1zpresso jmax .. can you help me why ?!
Could be so many things. Check out my video on how to dial in espresso, it should help you. If you aim for the timing 35-30 that will get you most of the way there! th-cam.com/video/4d8ZHKLv3X8/w-d-xo.html
Thanks!!
Thanks Ben!
I’m loving my Pro X. I have the matte black version and it’s stunning and sleek. Great review!
Ooh sometimes I wish I had waited for the matte black one. They only had the stainless silver one in stock. Glad you enjoyed the review and have fun with your Pro X!
When you made this video a year ago I bought one don’t regret it best shots I have had in my life
the design is perfect. It isn't wide so takes up less counter. And my wife doesn't get mad thinking I spent thousands of dollars on a fancy looking machine. ;)
I had a ver1 for 10 years, these things are built like a tank and all parts are available online. Solid performer for a decade.
Maybe I have low cabinets but it's too tall for my kitchen. It's also too deep.
@@bluemystic7501 when I had my kitchen remodel I had the choice of top cabs that were reachable or that went to the ceiling. I went for cabs to the ceiling for this reason and not having to clean the top of lowered cabs.
Personally I’m glad they kept the original look, it shows that it’s not some gimmicky redesign and you’re paying only for the better technology inside
And it still looks classy 😎
We Agree
Great point!
Just like G Class, the design is pretty much the same since Benz started making it decades ago. Yet, such a powerful tank.
I agree but would you go for the brass or black colours ?
I upgraded to this from a breville pro something whatever. One of the entry level ones with the grinder in it. I was able to get a bundle with a eureka grinder for $1800. Got the last one left. Im sure i'll notice a huge difference. YOur editing and pace of the video is better than some channels that have 4X the subs you have.
Thank you!
Awesome!
you can't say that and not have a video on your channel.
I upgraded to it just yesterday, waiting for it to arrive. For me it was the only choice for making perfect shots at home. No pressure issues, no temp issues. Just design flaws.
You gotta pick your flaws when it comes to espresso machines. They ALL have them.
if the design flaw is the shallow drip tray, well given the extraordinary performance, i can live with that .....
Design is perfect
This is my next machine
It's a great machine!
Hi Charlie. Thank you for a solid review - arguably the best review to date! And thank you for your comment on "time to 1st shot". Cannot believe that people wait 20 minutes, if 5 minutes will do just fine. With a bit of luck, our 230V power grid (Cape Town, SA) might also speed up things, compared to 110V 🤔
So only decision left then is, Stainless Steel vs Black 🙂
Thank you so much, I'm glad you enjoyed it! I would go black. I asked them for it but they said it would be another month or two, and I couldn't wait to get my hands on it lol. Did I make a mistake? Who knows! 😅
@@homecafecharlie No mistake - it looks great.
Best review for this machine.
Thank you!
CLASSIC LOOK DEFINITELY, just ordered mine, looking forward it, was between Breville oracle espresso and Silvia pro X.
Pro X any day 😎
Gotta love the old-school tele shopping format ;)
I solved it with some sanding fabric and can live with it now
What temperature are you using for the steam boiler?
I'm considering this as dual boiler upgrade from an Ascaso Steel Uno PID. Also the insulated steam wand, at least on the Ascaso, is just a plastic tube inside the stainless steel tube, some people might not like that. Thanks for the video.
Probably not plastic but Teflon. But still the usual low budget 'no burn', hat I am happy, the Pro X has NOT.
Pros of not having that: Better steam, nicer movement of the steam wand. I am coming from a machine which had 'no burn' and did not miss it at the Pro X one single day
Just got the pro x and I’m so happy about it
I was using a cheap $70 espresso machine so it was a huge jump for me
You're going to love it!
The steam function has its own boiler, so its temperature is maintained independently. In short: no, you don’t have to.
I'm 3 weeks living with my new roomates, Ms. Silva along with Mr. Baratza and learning each day how to improve the process. Thank you for the helpful tips to help me get started.
your latte art is already very good!!
Thank you so much! I still wanna improve, you'll see when I upload that video how much better it can be!
Well, I finally took the plunge and bought one.
It arrives Friday. 🥳
I dig the classic look. This will be my upgrade machine.
You're gonna love it! 😎
Excellent review Charlie, well done!
Glad you liked it!
Yeah those are my small complaints but overall it's an incredible machine and reliably makes fantastic espresso
Thansk. Is it volumetric?
I was between the profitec 700 and this but after hearing the warranty isn't voided if the chassis is opened, this wins.
Small things go wrong, I'd hate to be out of my machine for weeks for something minor I can fix myself.
Im definitely getting this machine as an upgrade from my bambino plus
That would be a HUGE upgrade 😍
Hey Charly,
Does your tamper fit in well? In my Portafilter is allways a tiny bit of Kaffee on the sides…
Great review 👍
For $1,800 I got an ECM Mechanika V Slim to upgrade from my 10 year old Rancilio, but that's the aesthetic I wanted. We both have the same grinder...
How do you like the DF64?I'm hoping to try some conical burr grinders soon to compare with the flat burr, but I like the clarity and sharpness
Wasabi 🤙
Wasabi to you too, good sir 😉
The Pro X is definitely a huge step up from the Silvia (and of course Gaggia). So happy with my upgrade, my daily experience is so much nicer!
The drip tray is still too puny.
Great clip thank u ☺️
Great video! I have a question about soft infusion, can you start the shot with 6 second soft infusion and then hit brew switch to stop it before pump turns on? I was wondering if turning it off would allow it to bloom more and then you could restart shot with pressure?
Would be worth I try. I don't have the machine anymore so I can't test it.
@@homecafecharlieWhy did you get rid of it?
@@dearcoffee85 I sold it when I left Japan. Shipping it home and getting a voltage transformer was gonna be way too expensive.
@@homecafecharlie That makes sense. Thanks for your reply
Yes not the most rigorous test 😅
I already wrote about the machine at the other video
In this video I will write for this glass 😍😍😍
3:28
Hehe, the Kruve Imagine cup. I put a link in the description. I love these cups, so fun to make coffee for other people, they always feel like it's extra premium coffee in one of these 😋
great review.
should i get this or the sage oracle? im lost now
The breville (sage) dual boiler is also a pretty solid machine. I prefer the Silvia Pro X, but remember to save as much of your budget for your grinder as possible.
Hi Charlie, quick question. If choosing between this and the Bianca which would you go for, and why?
Never used a Bianca so I have no idea 🤣 Depends on if you like the E61 group or you prefer the industrial look
Even for the Silvia V6? 😁
could the silvia pro x withstand a high pace espresso shot output for a small cafe? if not, what machine would you reccomend in or around that price point
Great video. How many grams can you fit into the double dose included basket?
It's a standard 18g basket, but the commercial portafilter that comes with it is deep and can fit up to a 21g basket (I think they call this a triple for some reason). Should have mentioned this in the video... so much to talk about in a long video like this 😅
I guess living in Japan affecting your sense of humour, I love it! Very good review. Keep the good work, man
With espresso machines at these prices, you gotta have a sense of humour haha
Thanks for the reply! I'll try 1:1 ratio and check your videos too! 😊☕️
How long does your Silvia take in steaming before the light starts blinking again?
I sold the Silvia when I left Japan cos it was the wrong voltage so I cannot remember. But man what a great machine, I miss its reliability
Just makes me appreciate my gaggia classic pro more 😅
I am debating between this or the Profitec Pro 300 or Ascaso Steel Duo????
@@Crimson_626how are you enjoying the Profitec? I’m also debating the Pro 300 or the Silvia pro x
Funny you should mention that; I'm actually planning a video on how to steam with different steam tips.
Does the machine have the Rancilio logo on the rear
I don't remember and I just moved back to the UK and had to sell the machine (wouldn't work on UK power). I think it does but better to check a 3d image of it
How about compare with rocket giotto
Hi Charlie, I am planning to buy the Silvia Pro X and was wondering whether you adjusted the brew pressure on yours? I'd love to lower it to about 6.5 bars but didn't find anything about that on the internet… 😱
I didn't try it but there's a manual for changing the OPV valve. I don't have the machine anymore as I had to sell it when I left Japan.
@@homecafecharlie what are you planning to buy?
I like the classic look. Frankly I think a lot of machines look over wrought
Fwiw, I have started using a puck screen. I find it keeps the group head much cleaner.
I would probably buy the new Silvia right now. Except that it seems too large for my counter top… sigh
It is a hefty boi. I agree with you on the classic look 😍
When the rancilio warms up…. Does the noise bother your neighbors?
🤣 I never got any complaints
Hi Charlie, I'm also in Tokyo and am planning to buy Rancilio Silvia Pro X. May I ask where you purchased yours?
Hey Brian, there's a link in the description with a discount code for you!
Have you tested the Bellaze Beladone yet?
Great video. What is the name of the IKEA table you’re using again?
It's Sternstorp I think 😎
Anyways I hope that after all this the machine will no perform without any further hiccups. sadly the first week was not what I hoped for :(
Thanks again for taking the time to reply.
Charlie which grinder do you recommend fot silvia pro X?
I'd recommend something like the DF64 like I had, or a Niche Zero. Depends on if you prefer clarity (flat burr DF64) or texture (conical burr Niche). Bunch of other grinders on the market but those 2 you can't go wrong 😉
@@homecafecharlie propably i’ll go for Niche zero ;) thank you alot :)
I’m saving for my ProX , I’m not getting any less expensive machine. 🙂
Brother How much. I need one machine place procedure.
Where can we find the 3 hole tip ?
I think the machine comes with it in Europe, but you should be able to buy from local espresso parts shops or online. I got mine from the manufacturer so I'm not sure 😉
How do I get that clear dosing cup from your video?
Ah, that one comes with the DF64 ;)
Does the steamer heat up if I don't press the steamer button?
Yes it has a universal toggle, so if you turn it off it will stay off (and won't heat up with the machine next time), and if you turn it on it will also be on by default when you switch on the machine next time.
Great review! I can't wait for these to come to Japan. By the way, is this machine compatible with U.S., 120V power sources or is it Japan, 100V only?
I'll know more soon. They sent me the US version for the review, but soon I can say more. Make sure you're in my Japan Coffee Lovers group on FB, they will give me a discount code for my group soon 😉
How do you steam and pull the shot at the same time without over-flowing your shot? I would lose track of the shot. Does it have a shot timer?
Yes there's a shot timer, and I have my scale facing me under the cup, so I can look down and check the weight. Great question!
@@homecafecharlie I mean if the pump turns off automatically at a set time. I have the Silvia V1 and I'm basically frozen for 25 seconds watching my scale with the hand on the pump switch lol. I can't imagine steaming while looking at the scale.
@@nitsuga1111 it takes some practice but it's doable!
what grinder do you use ?
At the time of this video is the DF64. Link in the description 😉
I know it’s all about the grinder but how has this machine held up for you all this time. How consistent are your shots/taste? Cheers!
@@homecafecharlie Ahhhh, yes. The Decent is a gorgeous piece of equipment. Thanks again!
What kind of water do you use?
Doing a video about that soon. I was using filtered water until I tried some remineralising solutions, and now it's all changed!!!
@@homecafecharlie Great. Thanks!
what temperature reach the milk? I'm having issues with steam because it runs off too quickly when the milk is just 45°C, if I keep "steaming" there's little steam with lot of water and I cant' get good silky milk. I didn't have that problem with my silvia v3 with pid. Not linking my upgrade to pro x so far.
Which steam hole tip do you have? I'm guessing it's the four hole steam tip. It might be using up the reservoir too quickly. I'd suggest getting the three hole or even the one hole steam tip, which might take a little bit longer but won't use all the steam too quickly.
How many shots/ lattes can you do back to back? Also where does this fall on your tier list, S, A, ?!?
Great questions. I think the standard they use for testing is 14 shots back to back. So a LOT, more than most baristas could do at that speed.
As for tier, it's gonna be S or A. Hard to say cos I love it, but I know it's not for everyone (especially the industrial design)
@@homecafecharlie I think you changed my mind on what I was considering now I think I’m going to get this to start as I save for a Decent, thanks for the great videos. Looking forward to your next ones.
Impressive, I think Rancilio Silvia pro X is comparable to Lelit Elizabeth
Similar price as well!
@@andreasidarto7822 yeah there's a lot that goes into this decision. I think the Pro X is fantastic and it was stock 9 bar.
@@homecafecharlie perfect!
Leliit Elizabeth is better machine than X Pro
Where do you get these in Japan? Or do you just import from Amazon US? Even if you can find these machines here (tokyo) I can't imagine say bic would give a decent price...
Check the description, I gave a link there to the Japan importer and a code to get you 5% off 😉
I can't seem to get quality micro foam, and I'm running out of ideas 😂🏃 also mine was supplied with a 3 hole steam tip 🤔
I'll be doing more videos on this soon. I learned a lot today from a pro latte artist so I'll share about it soon 😉
A couple of questions for you:
1) Do you know exactly when it will be available in Japan, and where?
(…or the Profitec machines?)
Holy moly. I only just realised now that this is a completely new and separate model from the Silvia Pro! 😅
Man, the Kopi Deva would look so much better next to the Silvia than the DF64. Also it is better imo, having had the DF64 before the Kopi Deva (Grinding result and build quality).
What a pair they would make 😍
Still waiting for manometer in this model
What's that in the bottom left? Is there a difference I'm not seeing?
@@homecafecharlie omg right lmao 🤣
@@homecafecharlie i might miss my daily espresso dose 😂
I think the rubber seal is supposed to be placed without the basket on the oposite direction you put in on the video.
Not sure which part you're talking about 😵💫
@@homecafecharlie minute 11:00. The rubber seal its supposed to be put directly on the porta filter without the basket with the little flat part facing down.
@@mjriguero then that's also a bit of a pain because taking the basket out is pretty annoying. I usually just use the blind basket from my old Silvia in the bottomless (easier to remove)
Where can I get some of those lovely glass latte cups?
Check the description 😍
I think they should have updated and modernized the design. It would have swayed me. As it is, it’s just too utilitarian. Also, a no burn steam wand at this price point should be there as well.
They should have made brew pressure adjustment accessible easily w/o opening up anything. And the no improvement of dip tray is a dealbreaker for me.
Compare it with an Isomac Mondaile
I just checked out a video. It looks fun, I'd like to play with one - so weird that it has like a speaker/vent looking thing on the side... But I'm sure its a fun machine!
Lelit Elizabeth PL92T, same specs but better price and better looking in my eye.
Would love to play with one, but looking at pictures I think the Pro X is nicer looking. But it's a coin toss. Does the Elizabeth have the temperature stability? That's changed my espresso more than anything!
Also why don’t you just distribute with WDT?
I like to get it nice and even :D
Might be better tech inside. But the way to use it is clunky. The better option would be of been BT to phone, allowing much easier interaction of function's.
Also a little expensive compared to an upgraded Gaggia Classic Pro
Different league
I could have afforded the Marcozzo micra but chose this instead. The fact that the Marcozzo locks features behind an app and internet/Bluetooth connectivity was a complete deal breaker. I want something I can use and pass down without having to worry about app updates and support. I don't want to have to grab my phone to adjust my machine.
How are you enjoying it?
More than twice the price of a normal Silvia.
Another let down the vibration pump makes a lot of noise.
To adjust the boiler pressure is very laborious.
Again the diptray is very clumsy.
The steamwand isn't insulated.
Limited pre infusion.
At this price tag I am expecting both more improvements and refinements.
Totally different machine though. Silvia is a single boiler and limited functionality. The Pro X was a massive step up!
This is beast of Machine I couldn't believe once I put it in use!! If someone can explain point of Bottomless portafilter? Thanks!
I loved it too! Bottomless PF looks cool and helps you diagnose if your shots are coming out right more easily than with a spout 😉

At the same price you have a Lelit Elisabeth. Solve the faults of the Silvia Pro X.
