I used to feel frustrated with Broccoli and Wilson over the long delays between films. But having seen the Marvel and Star Wars driven into the ground by force-feeding content, I have come to appreciate that absence makes the heart grow fonder.
Good video Calvin. I think one of biggest differences between the 89 to 95 gap and now is that the delay in the early 90s was pretty much out of Cubby's control. That is not the case at the moment. EON could be in the middle of production of a new Bond film right now if they wanted to, but are choosing something else instead. I would like Barbara and Michael to produce Bond 26 but if their heart isn't in it anymore, they need to consider passing the torch and allowing the series to continue.
Very true, Damien. Even between QoS and Skyfall, the four year gap was out of Eon's control, covid and the effect that had on NTTD releasing was obviously out of their control too but the hiatus we're currently experience is really down to them right now, as you say. Gaps in the past have been motivated by either legal or financial issues but this is really motivated by Eon not feeling motivated!
I think at the very least, Cubby still tried to make sure that he was determined to make more Bond movies in the early 90's, regardless of the legal problems and let the public know and rest assure. Something thats not quite put in place with whats going on now
@@calvindysonit's clear Babs is no longer interested in the franchise having killed the goose which laid the golden egg. She is now too interested in her little art house movie and theatre projects, you know the one's nobody watches or are aware even exist. Her only drive now is for awards recognition which the Bond films are never going to be in contention for other than the technical awards. Bond is nothing but two hours of entertainment pure and simple, something Babs has clearly forgot with the Craig era being all moody and filled with angst. She needs to sell the franchise to someone more interested, a full time showrunner not a part time disinterested caretaker which she is.

Given one of the biggest films this year is a follow up from a character killed off 7 years ago with that actor back so the 'killed the goose that layer the golden egg' is clearly nonsense, especially in this era of reboots and Craig being 'moody' didn't stop it being successful [Skyfall earned $1.2 billion after all!].

A story about 009 and their weird taste in Sinatra covers.

Group therapy... I think we all needed that. If this hiatus ends with a film of the quality of 'Casino Royale' or 'Goldeneye', it will be well worth the wait.
Not only the quality of the next film but I really feel they will take what they had with Craig, films that are interconnected, and master it this time rather than try and messily tie them together and waste the whole Blofeld rights on an underwhelming pair of films. Once we get the first film, I think they will be regular then. But I think we’ll see another 4/5 years before we are bums on the seat in the cinema watching the next one

Completely get feeling restless but I actually like how the franchise still has a degree of prestige to it in this age of MCU and Star Wars fatigue. I'd rather have to wait several years for each new instalment than watch these movies become continuously pumped out slop.
The downside of the Bond films is we're always in this weird period where we get nothing for 5 to 6 years and then we're kicking off, only to wait 3 to 4 years for a next film. Its just the cycle they've created. I really feel during these down period they could easily bring back Brosnan to do a short mini series of his Bond.....something!
Even if they do bring him back, it's still would take time to write+ make a project for him [2-3 years] which would push back Bond 26 even more. Given his age [71 so much 13 years older than Roger in View] and reluctance ['my time is my time'] it's a long shot anyway.
@@jamesatkinsonjaI can't see Moore doing more than a cameo, myself. Brosnan on the other hand might not mind a Never Say Never film. What would that even look like post the more gritty Craig Bond? To me Connery's Bond was just as believable as Moore's (each had a healthy dose of the suspension of disbelief) and not out of place for the times.

No that’s not the downside, the fact that Daniel Craig is a fudge packer, proven as he is seen frequently at gay bars and French kissing men at those bars brings the series to a new low.
As a Doctor Who fan, I would like to say - the series was cancelled in 1989. It came back in 2005. We had to wait SIXTEEN YEARS. So, I kind of sympathise. What's more, I was actually around for the gap between Dalton and Brosnan. During that time, I didn't think we'd ever get a new Bond film.
@@chrisdechristophe The differences in Who old and new were mostly technical, I think. They adapted to a film-like look (still video-taped, but filtered to resemble film), had far more location work and less of the crippling staginess of its original form, while the stories were more Earth-focused and gave the companions more to do. But I don't see how it was any different than, to use a Bond example, the Craig era to what came before. But I'd be interested to hear another opinion as I already know my own :)
Thanks! The gap between Dalton and Brosnan was rough. Very comparable to this situation. If Michael and Barbara are tired/bored, they should sell and retire. Amazon/MGM would likely go nuts: a movie every two or three years, maybe even period pieces with ten or so episodes on Prime, who knows? Again, thank you for your work, Calvin.
I don't know if that would be a good thing. Star Wars used to be a massive event when it happened occasionally but now it happens so often it gets nothing like that hype anymore. I think the novels are the best place to do spin offs generally.

Great video. It seems EON is more interested in the Craig business than the Bond business.From allowing him to invite his preferred screenwriters to polish scripts, to funding his passion projects A Steady Rain, Macbeth, and Othello. They're also in a tough position because Craig was so strong, especially in Casino, which was his best film. The next actor's first outing will have a high bar.
In fairness he was being consulted on casting and the director as early as Quantum [as the villain was in Munich and the original director Roger Michell had worked with him before] and he asked Sam Mendes to direct it personally [and Ben Whishaw was in 'Layer Cake' with him so he might have recruited him too].
@@dick_mojo That's just silly-The whole film is about Bond's origin and given how much hate Craig's casting got at the time the fact he ended up getting a best actor nomination at the Bafta's for it shows how well he was received.

As a massive Hitman fan I'm so curious to see what IO Interactive does with the James Bond video game. The Hitman games are so unique and there's really not a lot out there like them. I want some of the Hitman DNA in their Bond Game, but I'm wondering if they'll basically do Hitman reskinned as Bond or go in another direction. Can't wait to see what they cook up. Also David Bateson who voices Agent 47 would be such a good villain for the game.

Long overdue for some new video games, it's the product that got me into the franchise with Goldeneye which I feel is the same for many Millennial bond fans

As someone who will probably be over 70 by the time the next Bond comes off, i can remember the early years when the Eon films came out every year for the 1st 4 movies, then averaging every 2 years ending with Licence to Kill. Then there was the, what I hated, 6-year gap before Goldeneye came out. & since then, it hasn't been as regular. I want the "every 2-year schedule" to return, or at least 3 years. I know we will never see the 1 a year schedule return.
There are a lot of unanswered questions especially if there is a desire from the old brass to continue. I understand the desire to diversify but there will always be a love of movies in general, one of the sons may be right that there are ebbs and flows to the enthusiasm people have about going to the cinema. Audiences grow older, and demographics shift, take a look at how Marvel and Star Wars have fallen. I do really hope there will be more Bond and given its track record as a money printer I believe it will but the makers will wait for the right story, actor and environment and not take unnecessary risks. The great thing about being a Bond fan is all the movies are fairly watchable and enjoyable to some degree and we have a lot of them. Additionally, it is thanks to creators like Calvin that keep this fan base energized and will help us get through these years. On that note, I would love to see some more review videos like you have done with the Bond Experience.

Yeah, there wasn't the internet in that era so it really was just "well that's it for Bond" until the buzz started around Goldeneye. There was little in the way of speculation - just a vacuum.
Passing it off to the Broccoli children might be the breath of fresh air Bond 26 needs, with Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli taking on the role of mentors while doing non-Bond projects.
We're in a weird state of Bond at the moment. Not only is the end of the Craig era having it's rest, but it was also the first true "continuation" series. Sure, we have had a direct continuation within Moore's days, but not a connectivity on this lenght. That is world building, which is massive work. And, outside of the planning, the current state of economy within these big budget movies are super expensive, so that takes time. Now that there is no clear direction I understand it will take some time. I do miss the Bond movies, and I am looking forward to see what will happen. Also, I was not too familiar with the spin-off content, but that is also a direction I'd love for the Bond universe to explore. I do not wish for Bond to change gender og ethnicity for the BOND franchise, but I'd love for the universe of the double 00's to expand and explore.

Re the Heriditary Monarchy of EON: this question came up when Barbara mentioned that her daughter asked her if she waa supposed to run EON with her cousins after her mother stopped. Barbara said no, you do whatever you want for a career. She did do some small set work on I believe NTTD, but then decided EON wasn’t for her. I think she changed careers. Michael's sons are managing parts of the company, but there isn't a 'family honour' that they have to.
The David Wilson interview clip is interesting. For 17 years, I worked for a family-controlled newspaper chain. (The biggest papers were in Phoenix and Indianapolis.) For years, the family said they would never, ever sell. Until they did in 2000. The family members who didn't want to sell had died out. The ones who wanted to sell were now in charge. As David Wilson says, the third generation is always a major inflection point.
I just want the franchise to go back to as it was before the Craig era. Fun and outlandish adventures and gadgets. That was the main charm for me in the series. I like the more grounded take Craig had but give me more double take animals please
One of the best things about Bond movies was that they were formulaic. They were independent stories that happened within a known framework, and the story never reached out far enough to disturb the framework: Cold open. M assigns a mission. Q supplies toys. Exotic location #1 and woman #1 (who will probably die). Car chase. Exotic location #2 and woman #2 (who will probably betray Bond). Fight scene. Exotic location #3 and woman #3. Bond gets captured and with the help of a Q gadget, escapes, beats the bad guy and gets the girl. OHMSS deviated from that by having Bond get married, but even then, it re-sets at the end. The Craig movies don't follow that template. They all have to be big, bombastic, and world changing. M dies. Bond has a brother. MI6 HQ gets blown up. Bond has a daughter. It's like none of them are confident enough to just trust the format and be a Bond movie anymore. Godzilla Minus One was a fantastic example of how a franchise can be true to its template while still being a great, original movie. The Bond producers could learn a lot from it.
I guess 'Fast & Furious' and MCU had corned the market for that sort of film in recent years [as MI isn't too outlandish] but F&F is finishing and the MCU have had bumps.
@@emperorchopchop7726 But after 20 films they desperately needed a change and the format had become more obvious due to home media. Mission Impossible 7 got flack for having a similar structure to MI6 for example. The landscape has totally changed since Craig started with stuff like the MCU growing an audience through greater continuity [which the Brosnan films were already flirting with with Valentine coming back and Wai Lin proposed for a Die Another Day cameo, the Jinx movie feels like they were thinking about 'cinematic universes' before that was common!].
I think that's what they are gonna do, they seem to flip flop between serious and over the top gadgets and adventures depending on who the actor was. Serious early Connery/Lazenby lead to the more gadget focus outlandish Moore which lead to the ground Dalton movies which fed into the gadgets and over the top action of the Brosnan years. So a more light hearted Bond is to be expected, especially because it would make easier on the actor to not constantly be compared to Craig.
I suppose I'm staying calm about the amount of time it's taking, but that's under the assumption that once it gets going again it stays going. That they work out what Bond #7's tenure will be like now and that once we get Bond #7's first film we get them once every two/three years. If we get Bond #7's first film and then we're back on hiatus, that'll be majorly frustrating. But in the meantime there's still a lot of Bond media I'm experiencing for the first time, so it's new for me - e.g. I'm reading through the Young Bond and Moneypenny Diaries books for the first time. And even with Bond books, films, comics and games I have read/watched/played before, it's not as if I'm getting bored with them. They're still my go to for a rainy Saturday or if I'm sick. And also there's more to my pop-culture life than just Bond - I'm still ticking off films in the 1001 Movies to See Before You Die book, and also this year I've really started getting into the Godzilla franchise. So, I'm keeping busy and not getting too hung up on the lack of news. I mean, the lack of a new Bond film is disappointing, but I find it hard to muster any anger anymore, just a dejected sigh and an "oh well". I don't have any doubt that there will be another (and then after that another, and then after that etc. etc.) so I guess it's just a case of it'll happen when it happens. Though I admit I am speaking from the privilege of being a guy in his 20s in good health so (unless I'm involved in a freak accident tomorrow) I'm not concerned that I'm going to die before the next Bond film comes out. But yes, if Bond 26 comes out and then we go another couple of years before Bond 27, that's when I might feel the urge to write EON an angry letter.
You could say , the real challenge is....how do you continue the series from Bond 26 to Bond 27. Fingers crossed theyve have things in place for all that

I’m happy with them taking all the time they need. I don’t want to see Bond go the way of basically every other franchise and just pump things out I feel like Bond is perhaps the only major film franchise that has been around as long as it has that has really kept its integrity. I think if possible it should remain a family business because at the end of the day they will do better quality control wise than any big corporation.

While we don't want to come off as entitled fan boys, but if EON or the producers dont try and keep fans excited or in the loop of things, then our excitement and enthusiasm is lowered really incredibly and general audiences will lose interest and will possibly be more interested in other things that are promised in the future (RDJ as Dr Doom, I'm excited) more so than Bond movies. And thats where the danger lies sadly, especially with young people who dress up at Comic cons more as MCU, star wars, Star Trek, DR WHO, Disney, video game or any other popular media franchise characters....because......well, Ive certanly never seen anyone dress up as a Bond character, villian or even Bond himself at any of these events. As someone who was overall satisfied with No Time to Die (and didn't hate the ending) I think it's good we're having a long break. People need time to miss the character before we introduce a whole new version.
I totally feel your pain Calvin. Like you there is not a single day that passes in my life where I don’t think about Bond. This wait is TORTURE for fans like us. But at least this way when they do get the freight train that is Bond back up to speed again, it will be special and we can finally scratch that itch again. Until then we just have to keep calm and carry on friend.
I totally understand this comment. Whilst I DO understand if Eon wishes to take time with the development of the next movie, I also believe the producers have a responsibility to be honest with what is a very large and incredibly loyal fan base. Subjecting this fan base to what I have described as 'a never-ending 'speculation spectacular'' is simply unfair and takes us all for granted. As the good Bard recognised, 'honesty is the best policy'.
Well said. The producers need to get over themselves or get lost. Sell the franchise to people who care about Bond movies and don't consider making them some terrible personal burden.
@@WayneLaconic They have been honest in saying 'nothing is happening'. It's not like there saying 'it's just around the corner' and nothing happens. Tabloid nonsense saying they are casting etc distorts the picture but official Eon quotes have been pretty consistent in saying nothing is currently in production.
The problem is that it almost feels like Barbara and Michael G. have little interest in making Bond films post-Craig. If we're being honest, NTTD was finished in 2019; it's now 2024, and we're no closer to a new movie. I don't think we need a film every two years, but we are at another one of those critical points in the franchise again where it's time to ask if Bond is still relevant. Sure, it can continue, but should it? When you think about it, we've had one Bond film released in the last nine years. That is staggering. I think the way to save Bond is to hand creative control to a visionary director like Nolan. Nolan continues to produce films that are both critically successful and commercially successful. He also returned Batman to relevancy after Batman and Robin. I cannot help but feel that Wilson and Broccoli have too much creative control. I think that makes it difficult for any director to want to take on the project when there are so many constraints.
I think Bond has twenty years left in the gas tank before the series ends. Not because those in charge end it by choice, but due to Bond slowly becoming less relevant with younger generations. I’m in my 20s and I can honestly say most people my age or younger have never seen a Bond film. We grew up with Star Wars and Marvel; Bond has never been in the limelight like he once was. The longer they take to make new films the faster it’ll kill the franchise because younger generations have no desire to watch Bond
@@dawsynasay4841There on TV all the time in the UK so I'm sure that most people have seen them [most grew up with the Craig movies]. Dune would mean nothing to kids in the 2010's but the new films have been big hits so if the products good people will come.

Personally, I think it's a good idea that the producers are taking their time to craft a good story and decide where they are going to take the character and the franchise. I don't want the Bond franchise to turn into Star Wars or the Marvel films where they just keep putting out half-ass content constantly to the point people just don't care anymore. I think quality should overcome quantity because the results will be worth the wait.

Here's an idea: What if the next bond movie was directed by Christopher McQuarrie? I think what he has accomplished in the recent installments of the Mission Impossible franchise were his subtle way of demonstrating that if someone gave him the chance, he would be more than happy to direct a bond film.
@@jamesatkinsonja Just thought I'd throw it out there. I could not think of any other movie director who has had more dedication to spy and action movies than Chris McQuarrie. As far as I know, it's a pretty small pool to draw from.
One of the reasons Bond succeeded was the constant pivot between "types" of actors. Of the main four, in turns thuggish, comedic, suave, professional. And in that time Britain's place in the world has gone from last-gasp of empire, through American sugar-rush economy, to heading to destitution. At this stage it feels like Spectre/WEF has won. Perhaps this one should see a disavowed, dissident Bond slowly working his way through Parliament & the Civil Service whacking them in turns.
All I'll say is, I would rather these long gaps between films than forcing them out every two years for the sake of it. Bond films feel special to me, because we haven't been oversaturated with them over the years. For instance, theres a new Star Wars film coming in 2026, and I'm just not that bothered about it to be honest. It doesnt feel like a special event anymore, which is a pity.

Exactly. Obviously, gaps between films doesn't guarantee quality either, but at least there's the opportunity to put together a good script and cast. Also, given all the whining and complaining about "woke" Bond films, if I were EON, I wouldn't want to make one either right now. You can't have Bond acting like it's 1962 and hitting women all the time in 2024, but if you have him behave like someone would have to in order to survive in the 21st century, some of the audience is going to ruin the box office. Better to let this phase work itself out and then make a film.
Well to give a counter view growing up in the seventies/eighties an anticipation and excitement developed expecting the latest Bond film, kind of like Christmas and in recent years I can see interest in the general public waning, most young men in their 20's I know have little to no interest in Bond. Is good to keep something in the public eye.
I'm in the camp "A big gap is not a bad thing" because I like that the 007 movies feel like huge events. Especially because, hot take, the last time we had movies coming out back to back when they didn't have a source material to rely on, it was during the Brosnan years and I found his movies (with the exception of Goldeneye) a bit forgettable. However, I can't deny that I'm getting tired of not having any news about Bond26. I sincerely hope they've at least started working on the script. That said, once again, I'll take these huge gaps over them selling the rights to amazon. That would be the dead of the franchise in my opinion because they'd definitely ruin it to the ground like Disney did with Star Wars and those annual movies + spin off and tv shows.
The latest “grain of salt” rumor from The Telegraph says that EON are in the early stages of meeting with directors for Bond 26, with All Quiet On The Western Front’s director Edward Berger being the top name on their list.. In terms of rumors, this at least makes more sense than any Bond casting rumor, as you typically hire your director first - then your writers, then actors and so on.. But I’m still filing this one under the “I’ll believe it when I see it” category
I want Martin Campbell to direct Bond 26! Remember how he's awesome in Bond reboots, the first films for Pierce Brosnan (GoldenEye, 1995) and Daniel Craig (Casino Royale, 2006)!
On one hand, he may not have a third Bond masterpiece in him. Sometimes you hit that point of diminishing returns. On the other hand, I’m more than happy to try anyway.
The longest we've gone between 007 films is six years, so 2001 to 2004 isn't a big deal. If they need time to reinvent the character I say good on them for taking said time.
Othello shows they certainly aren't rushing into Bond 26. You'd think Amazon might be applying pressure but it didn't go well when Sony tried to speed things up. Eon works at the speed to Eon.
I remember they wanted Bond 24+25 shot back to back and the messy Mission Impossible 7+8 experience shows it would have been biting off more than they could chew if they had done that.
I got into Bond during the post Dalton gap... reading beautiful paperback versions of the books with a foreward by Anthony Burgess and watching old films on TV ...when the trailer for GoldenEye dropped it was earth shatteringly exciting
What is strange is that no actor has made exactly 3 Bond films and even more weirdly none of the Bond actors so far has made the same number of films as any other Bond actor.
True for EON films but if you included NSNA Connery and Moore both have 7. But if one really, REALLY wishes to stretch it and say The Rock was Connery's 8th Bond film, it'd be back to true with him having the most.

Aww Calvin I can see where you're coming from. And yes it can be agonizing to wait. Cinemas indeed don't seem to be as important now as they once were but we'll just have to wait and see
I actually think it is a good idea for there to be a longer than usual break between movies. Not only will there be a new actor but Bond himself will also be a reboot. There will be a lot for fans to digest so I think a break will help with the transition.
Bond is undergoing a "reinvention". This time I believe this is going to be a real reinvention for better or worse. Hopefully for better. They have a clean slate with Craig's Bond dying. Now Bond is like the Batman franchise with each new actor stepping into an alternate universe Bond with no continuation of what has gone before. It's possible, at least for the next guy anyway.
They already did it with Craig, so there's a precedent. Dalton to Brosnan's felt like a soft reboot. Connery, Lazenby Moore were all about the same age. The considerabley younger Dalton and younger Moneypenny seemed to set that.
The good part about no time to die, is that whoever they chose and whoever makes it, they have a completely clean slate. Personally I think they should just put some 40+ actor playing an established Bond on a mission. Nothing fancy and no need to force some big arc or origin story. This actor could make just 1-2 Bonds with no connection to older movie but not a origin story either. Fiennes could return as M and Naomi Harris as Moneypenny but nothing else needs to be mentioned. After this maybe a new origin story with a younger actor.
The key is to find other things to occupy your leisure time. You're spending time watching the kettle boil when there are new movie releases every week. Distract yourself from Bond or just rewatch the existing catalogue.
Random thoughts: (1) JB films usually follow movie trends (blaxploitation for LaLD, Star Wars for Moonraker, Bourne for Casino Royale, etc...) We are currently in a period when franchises are dying: superheroes, Star Wars, MI are less successful/anticipated/etc... It is therefore more difficult to predict what will be the next big thing, and thus more difficult to find the right approach for the next Bond. (2) Spin-offs, especially spin-offs involving other 00 agents, are an attractive idea. I've always wondered on what missions the other 00s are. (3) I'd love to see a more faithful adaptation of Moonraker. It is one of the best JB novel and only had an "in name only" adaptation.
The current trend is a shared universe so the idea of other 00’s in films building up to a “big bad” and a reveal of the new 007 would be an interesting way to go
Here’s the context: They have no confident direction forwards for a movie icon such as Bond in a media landscape that is so different and risky for movies.
I grew up with Bond, read all the books as a teenager etc..the 1989-95 hiatus was monumental for me, I went from a 17 year old schoolboy Bond super fan to a married man with a kid with lost interest, it was a few years later before I got into The Brosnan era on dvd, which I really love, but the longer the Bond drought lasts fans will be lost
They've said it's going to be contemporary but.I really wish they'd go back to the 50s and make it a period piece. Have the gun barrel opening be set at the very end of WW2 with a young Bond (if I recall correctly, Bond lied about his age when he enlisted in the books} on some espionage mission behind enemy lines that could involve a SMERSH agent in some capacity. The war ends, Bond is discharged and tries to go back to civilian life but what he saw and did during the war at such a young age has left him restless, unable to settle down and find peace. Tensions rise between East and West and in 1949, the Soviet Union tests it's first nuclear weapon and the Cold War that began 2 years earlier is now in full swing. Bond is then recruited by his old handler into a new initiative from MI6 known as the Double O programme. Casino Royale showed the two required kills at the beginning of the movie but a reboot set in the 50s could make those kills the focus of the movie with the targets being linked to the larger plot (I haven't gotten that far yet but since I'm not writing the movie, it doesn't matter lol). SMERSH would be the initial adversary with SPECTRE being introduced gradually over the course of a few movies just like the Connery films did.
I would be lying if I didn't admit my worry on the absolute state of the series right now. Limbo is not kind to lost souls. But everybody needs a hobby, and if Bond has one, it's resurrection. I see a lot of discourse online about how the Bond series should officially die just as the character did in _No Time to Die,_ or that there should be new cinematic tales of Bond set in the 50s and/or 60s. Not only do I find all these ideas as irritating as an unloved season, I also find them a direct defiance of what Bond has proved time and again for over 60 years. James Bond is forever. No matter what time, no matter what actor, director, or writer passes on, Bond will forever be relevant. As long as there is a need for a man of action, as long as there are new threats in the world, Bond will always be there. He survived the end of the Cold War, the death of his author, the turn of the millennium, and decades of changing social attitudes. To end or transform all that, would be to spit upon that entire legacy. Despite a lack of tangible evidence or hope, I still believe the words we were given at the end of every film, including _No Time to Die:_ JAMES BOND WILL RETURN And he will return because he must...
Absolutely! There's a lot of limited thinking going around about the franchise at the moment. Bond has constantly adapted. That's why it's survived. It's not that difficult to make it as a general audience pleaser. Loved your use of Bond references. 😁

The podcast 'James Bond and Friends' made a good point when they said Amazon aren't like Netflix throwing money at projects hoping it sticks [hence Citadel costing $300 million lead to big changes on the show for season 2 and there not rushing it] nor like Disney Plus/Paramount wanting loads of spin offs so it's probably not the owners to match people's expectations of getting more Bond content quickly [they seem fine with 'road to a million' at the mo]. There looking to expand the 'Rocky series but there taking there time on it [as only Creed 4 and a potential Drago spin off are in development and the later might not end up happening], clearly learning lesions from things like the DCU.
One difference between the Brosnan to Craig gap and now is that you had a constant stream of video games in that time. There was Everything or Nothing in early 2004, then Goldeneye: Rogue Agent later that year and From Russia with Love in 2005. That completely filled the gap between the movies. And that’s not even mentioning the PC port of Nightfire in 2003 and the Gameboy Advance ports of Nightfire and Everything or Nothing, all of which were quite different from their console counterparts.
While I do respect everyone's opinion, I must say that the whole "After No Time to Die the series should end" rather strange. Bond didn't end when Connery left, nor did it end when Ian Flemming or Cubby Broccoli passed away, so for it to just abruptly be done for good after 60 years of actively going out of its way to adapt and change in order to continue as a series would feel inappropriate I think. Obviously the character was killed off in No Time to Die, which admittedly is a first and some would argue that alone justifies ending the series, but No Time to Die was a Craig film and the Craig films are quite overtly a seperate continuity from the Bond series started with Connery and last seen with Brosnan back in the early 2000s. No Time to Die is perfectly appropriate as a conclusive ending to Craig's Bond specifically (2006-2021), but for it to mark the definitive end of Bond period? I just don't understand the rationale behind that. For a lot of stories, having a definitive end point is a good thing. Lord of the Rings ends with Return of the King, and that's a good thing- but Bond is different. Bond is, with the exception of the Craig era, a series defined by how standalone each story is by design, so unlike other series that demand a conclusion for the sake of dramatic satisfaction, Bond has the long-term benefit of the standalone structure protecting each entry from any potential dramatic cheapening that future installments run the risk of inflicting (just look at Star Wars or the MCU 😬). The lack of hard narrative continuity is exactly why Bond can, and I think should, continue for generations to come without devaluing what came before. Sorry for leaving such a long and rambling comment! Just had to get all that off my chest.
Bloody hell i became a bond fan at the wrong time. Got into bond around march 2019 and i thought it was a good time as no time to die was on the horizon and my dad said he'd take me to see it. Like every bond fan i suffered the delays but finally got what i waited for and unlike most bond fans i absolutely adore nttd. Honestly my favourite film ever. Now the only worthwhile developments have been with a mind to kill, the announcement of project 007 and the release of Goldeneye on Xbox. Hope there is some announcements soon just to get something
There won’t be any announcements in the near future. Bond 26 doesn’t even exist as a project. When or if Bond 26 does go in to development, it’s 3-4 years of work. Such a long way to go.
I think Craig should have gone after SPECTRE. This way we would have had another actor in the role. (hopefully) In 2027 i will be 50, will I even care about the franchise by then? I only really became a Fan after seeing Goldeneye in 1995 i think i have had a good run.
I think we probably would have had a big gap even if that had happened. I read the NTTD making of book recently and you really get an incite into how much Craig was involved behind the scenes and pushing the project forward so no wonder they didn't want to lose him [especially as he was very popular with general audiences] so it kicked the can of the current situation down the road a few years. If Craig was doing a 6th movie it probably would be in pre-production now.
If I recall they were pretty much about to start shooting when Brosnan had to pull out [given Dalton went straight from filming the now forgotten 'Brenda Star' to Daylights] so they were force to keep going. I do think having Dalton follow on so closely from Moore didn't help him gain an audience at the time as his take is so different [maybe like Craig+ Brosnan he would have benefited from a bit of a gap].

Good video Calvin. My first Bond was LALD when I was seven; so I’m of the generation that was used to the clockwork-like two-year gap between Bonds. We didn’t have to question it: they just turned up. So I’m quite chilled about this gap, compared to the unexpected tumbleweed that was 1989-1995; particularly because we’ve already had big chunks of time elapse between Craig movies (well, that and the parlous state of cinema today). That said, I would very much like Eon to get a bloomin’ move on…
I think living in the time of sequels and reboots, it's almost as though we've come to expect another movie to come out in a relatively short time period. I mean just think about the distance between the original trilogy of Star Wars and the prequels. Time does build anticipation and quite frankly it's these types of videos that satiate the Bond fix, because it's a celebration of the films and books. Great video and it reminds me of the milk chocolate/dark chocolate metaphor. I think we are due for some milk chocolate Bond in a few years with a big shake up of some sort and I'm all for it!
I'm older than you, Calvin, and I remember the long gap between Dalton and Brosnan. That was more frustrating in a way because the delay was due to legal / studio stuff that was out of the Broccolis' hands. But it was also easier to take because it was still a pre-internet time and we didn't have the constant news cycle that we have today. Our info was a lot more curated than it is now. But yeah, like you, I wish the new film was farther along than it is right now.
This proves what I've suspected for a long time -- that Barbara Broccoli is more interested in chasing trends than making true Bond films. Her tenure saw the Brosnan era devolve into over the top special effects offerings, as per the norm starting in the mid to late 90s, leading into what she admitted was a transition to Craig that aimed to emulate the Bourne series, eventually becoming stories that could serve as vehicles for any protagonist, in the process losing what sets Bond, as a character, apart. Now, seeing how there are no obvious trends that stand out, let alone dominate, in film today, I'm not surprised Broccoli is at a loss as to where to take the character. Thus, Wilson and Broccoli seem to care more about chasing trends (read chasing box office) than they do about the nuance and nature of the character.
The Bond films have been following trends since at least Live And Let Die. Moonraker was supposed to be made in 1968 to cash in on 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Space Race.

And a thinking that a Bond film had to be like American movies, even considering American stars like Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood, and casting one (John Gavin), before getting Connery back. The flip flop tone switches that the Bond series goes through shows how much they're influenced by trends and what they perceive to be the flavour of the time.
I used to feel frustrated with Broccoli and Wilson over the long delays between films. But having seen the Marvel and Star Wars driven into the ground by force-feeding content, I have come to appreciate that absence makes the heart grow fonder.

Good video Calvin. I think one of biggest differences between the 89 to 95 gap and now is that the delay in the early 90s was pretty much out of Cubby's control. That is not the case at the moment. EON could be in the middle of production of a new Bond film right now if they wanted to, but are choosing something else instead. I would like Barbara and Michael to produce Bond 26 but if their heart isn't in it anymore, they need to consider passing the torch and allowing the series to continue.
Very true, Damien. Even between QoS and Skyfall, the four year gap was out of Eon's control, covid and the effect that had on NTTD releasing was obviously out of their control too but the hiatus we're currently experience is really down to them right now, as you say. Gaps in the past have been motivated by either legal or financial issues but this is really motivated by Eon not feeling motivated!
I think at the very least, Cubby still tried to make sure that he was determined to make more Bond movies in the early 90's, regardless of the legal problems and let the public know and rest assure. Something thats not quite put in place with whats going on now

Not only the quality of the next film but I really feel they will take what they had with Craig, films that are interconnected, and master it this time rather than try and messily tie them together and waste the whole Blofeld rights on an underwhelming pair of films. Once we get the first film, I think they will be regular then. But I think we’ll see another 4/5 years before we are bums on the seat in the cinema watching the next one

Completely get feeling restless but I actually like how the franchise still has a degree of prestige to it in this age of MCU and Star Wars fatigue. I'd rather have to wait several years for each new instalment than watch these movies become continuously pumped out slop.
The downside of the Bond films is we're always in this weird period where we get nothing for 5 to 6 years and then we're kicking off, only to wait 3 to 4 years for a next film. Its just the cycle they've created. I really feel during these down period they could easily bring back Brosnan to do a short mini series of his Bond.....something!
Even if they do bring him back, it's still would take time to write+ make a project for him [2-3 years] which would push back Bond 26 even more. Given his age [71 so much 13 years older than Roger in View] and reluctance ['my time is my time'] it's a long shot anyway.

To me Connery's Bond was just as believable as Moore's (each had a healthy dose of the suspension of disbelief) and not out of place for the times.

As a Doctor Who fan, I would like to say - the series was cancelled in 1989. It came back in 2005. We had to wait SIXTEEN YEARS. So, I kind of sympathise. What's more, I was actually around for the gap between Dalton and Brosnan. During that time, I didn't think we'd ever get a new Bond film.
To be fair you did have the 1996 Paul McGann one off, that was intended as a pilot to a series. And talk of a Doctor Who movie series.

@@chrisdechristophe The differences in Who old and new were mostly technical, I think. They adapted to a film-like look (still video-taped, but filtered to resemble film), had far more location work and less of the crippling staginess of its original form, while the stories were more Earth-focused and gave the companions more to do.
But I don't see how it was any different than, to use a Bond example, the Craig era to what came before.
But I'd be interested to hear another opinion as I already know my own :)

Thanks! The gap between Dalton and Brosnan was rough. Very comparable to this situation. If Michael and Barbara are tired/bored, they should sell and retire. Amazon/MGM would likely go nuts: a movie every two or three years, maybe even period pieces with ten or so episodes on Prime, who knows? Again, thank you for your work, Calvin.

I don't know if that would be a good thing. Star Wars used to be a massive event when it happened occasionally but now it happens so often it gets nothing like that hype anymore. I think the novels are the best place to do spin offs generally.

Great video. It seems EON is more interested in the Craig business than the Bond business.From allowing him to invite his preferred screenwriters to polish scripts, to funding his passion projects A Steady Rain, Macbeth, and Othello.
They're also in a tough position because Craig was so strong, especially in Casino, which was his best film. The next actor's first outing will have a high bar.
In fairness he was being consulted on casting and the director as early as Quantum [as the villain was in Munich and the original director Roger Michell had worked with him before] and he asked Sam Mendes to direct it personally [and Ben Whishaw was in 'Layer Cake' with him so he might have recruited him too].
Casino Royale was strong DESPITE Daniel Craig, not because of him.

2. With films, I strongly (!) believe, the more time one spends on the screenplay - from the very first ideas to its shooting version - the better. One has time to play around, one has time to correct, one has time to fine-tune.

As a massive Hitman fan I'm so curious to see what IO Interactive does with the James Bond video game. The Hitman games are so unique and there's really not a lot out there like them. I want some of the Hitman DNA in their Bond Game, but I'm wondering if they'll basically do Hitman reskinned as Bond or go in another direction. Can't wait to see what they cook up. Also David Bateson who voices Agent 47 would be such a good villain for the game.

I do hope this works out for you Calvin! I’m somewhat anxiously hoping this series does continue on…I’ve been a loyal fan since Moonraker (I’m 53 so this came out at a perfect time for me, right around my 10th birthday)
As someone who will probably be over 70 by the time the next Bond comes off, i can remember the early years when the Eon films came out every year for the 1st 4 movies, then averaging every 2 years ending with Licence to Kill. Then there was the, what I hated, 6-year gap before Goldeneye came out. & since then, it hasn't been as regular. I want the "every 2-year schedule" to return, or at least 3 years. I know we will never see the 1 a year schedule return.
There are a lot of unanswered questions especially if there is a desire from the old brass to continue. I understand the desire to diversify but there will always be a love of movies in general, one of the sons may be right that there are ebbs and flows to the enthusiasm people have about going to the cinema. Audiences grow older, and demographics shift, take a look at how Marvel and Star Wars have fallen. I do really hope there will be more Bond and given its track record as a money printer I believe it will but the makers will wait for the right story, actor and environment and not take unnecessary risks. The great thing about being a Bond fan is all the movies are fairly watchable and enjoyable to some degree and we have a lot of them. Additionally, it is thanks to creators like Calvin that keep this fan base energized and will help us get through these years. On that note, I would love to see some more review videos like you have done with the Bond Experience.

We're in a weird state of Bond at the moment. Not only is the end of the Craig era having it's rest, but it was also the first true "continuation" series. Sure, we have had a direct continuation within Moore's days, but not a connectivity on this lenght. That is world building, which is massive work. And, outside of the planning, the current state of economy within these big budget movies are super expensive, so that takes time. Now that there is no clear direction I understand it will take some time. I do miss the Bond movies, and I am looking forward to see what will happen. Also, I was not too familiar with the spin-off content, but that is also a direction I'd love for the Bond universe to explore. I do not wish for Bond to change gender og ethnicity for the BOND franchise, but I'd love for the universe of the double 00's to expand and explore.

Re the Heriditary Monarchy of EON: this question came up when Barbara mentioned that her daughter asked her if she waa supposed to run EON with her cousins after her mother stopped. Barbara said no, you do whatever you want for a career. She did do some small set work on I believe NTTD, but then decided EON wasn’t for her. I think she changed careers. Michael's sons are managing parts of the company, but there isn't a 'family honour' that they have to.
The David Wilson interview clip is interesting. For 17 years, I worked for a family-controlled newspaper chain. (The biggest papers were in Phoenix and Indianapolis.) For years, the family said they would never, ever sell. Until they did in 2000. The family members who didn't want to sell had died out. The ones who wanted to sell were now in charge. As David Wilson says, the third generation is always a major inflection point.
I just want the franchise to go back to as it was before the Craig era. Fun and outlandish adventures and gadgets. That was the main charm for me in the series. I like the more grounded take Craig had but give me more double take animals please
One of the best things about Bond movies was that they were formulaic. They were independent stories that happened within a known framework, and the story never reached out far enough to disturb the framework:
Cold open. M assigns a mission. Q supplies toys. Exotic location #1 and woman #1 (who will probably die). Car chase. Exotic location #2 and woman #2 (who will probably betray Bond). Fight scene. Exotic location #3 and woman #3. Bond gets captured and with the help of a Q gadget, escapes, beats the bad guy and gets the girl.
OHMSS deviated from that by having Bond get married, but even then, it re-sets at the end.
The Craig movies don't follow that template. They all have to be big, bombastic, and world changing. M dies. Bond has a brother. MI6 HQ gets blown up. Bond has a daughter. It's like none of them are confident enough to just trust the format and be a Bond movie anymore.
Godzilla Minus One was a fantastic example of how a franchise can be true to its template while still being a great, original movie. The Bond producers could learn a lot from it.

I guess 'Fast & Furious' and MCU had corned the market for that sort of film in recent years [as MI isn't too outlandish] but F&F is finishing and the MCU have had bumps.

Mission Impossible 7 got flack for having a similar structure to MI6 for example. The landscape has totally changed since Craig started with stuff like the MCU growing an audience through greater continuity [which the Brosnan films were already flirting with with Valentine coming back and Wai Lin proposed for a Die Another Day cameo, the Jinx movie feels like they were thinking about 'cinematic universes' before that was common!].
I think that's what they are gonna do, they seem to flip flop between serious and over the top gadgets and adventures depending on who the actor was. Serious early Connery/Lazenby lead to the more gadget focus outlandish Moore which lead to the ground Dalton movies which fed into the gadgets and over the top action of the Brosnan years. So a more light hearted Bond is to be expected, especially because it would make easier on the actor to not constantly be compared to Craig.
I suppose I'm staying calm about the amount of time it's taking, but that's under the assumption that once it gets going again it stays going. That they work out what Bond #7's tenure will be like now and that once we get Bond #7's first film we get them once every two/three years. If we get Bond #7's first film and then we're back on hiatus, that'll be majorly frustrating.
But in the meantime there's still a lot of Bond media I'm experiencing for the first time, so it's new for me - e.g. I'm reading through the Young Bond and Moneypenny Diaries books for the first time. And even with Bond books, films, comics and games I have read/watched/played before, it's not as if I'm getting bored with them. They're still my go to for a rainy Saturday or if I'm sick. And also there's more to my pop-culture life than just Bond - I'm still ticking off films in the 1001 Movies to See Before You Die book, and also this year I've really started getting into the Godzilla franchise. So, I'm keeping busy and not getting too hung up on the lack of news. I mean, the lack of a new Bond film is disappointing, but I find it hard to muster any anger anymore, just a dejected sigh and an "oh well". I don't have any doubt that there will be another (and then after that another, and then after that etc. etc.) so I guess it's just a case of it'll happen when it happens. Though I admit I am speaking from the privilege of being a guy in his 20s in good health so (unless I'm involved in a freak accident tomorrow) I'm not concerned that I'm going to die before the next Bond film comes out.
But yes, if Bond 26 comes out and then we go another couple of years before Bond 27, that's when I might feel the urge to write EON an angry letter.
You could say , the real challenge is....how do you continue the series from Bond 26 to Bond 27. Fingers crossed theyve have things in place for all that

I’m happy with them taking all the time they need. I don’t want to see Bond go the way of basically every other franchise and just pump things out I feel like Bond is perhaps the only major film franchise that has been around as long as it has that has really kept its integrity. I think if possible it should remain a family business because at the end of the day they will do better quality control wise than any big corporation.

While we don't want to come off as entitled fan boys, but if EON or the producers dont try and keep fans excited or in the loop of things, then our excitement and enthusiasm is lowered really incredibly and general audiences will lose interest and will possibly be more interested in other things that are promised in the future (RDJ as Dr Doom, I'm excited) more so than Bond movies.
And thats where the danger lies sadly, especially with young people who dress up at Comic cons more as MCU, star wars, Star Trek, DR WHO, Disney, video game or any other popular media franchise characters....because......well, Ive certanly never seen anyone dress up as a Bond character, villian or even Bond himself at any of these events. Is there no passion for Bond with those fans??

As someone who was overall satisfied with No Time to Die (and didn't hate the ending) I think it's good we're having a long break. People need time to miss the character before we introduce a whole new version.
I totally feel your pain Calvin. Like you there is not a single day that passes in my life where I don’t think about Bond. This wait is TORTURE for fans like us. But at least this way when they do get the freight train that is Bond back up to speed again, it will be special and we can finally scratch that itch again. I totally understand this comment. Whilst I DO understand if Eon wishes to take time with the development of the next movie, I also believe the producers have a responsibility to be honest with what is a very large and incredibly loyal fan base. Subjecting this fan base to what I have described as 'a never-ending 'speculation spectacular'' is simply unfair and takes us all for granted. As the good Bard recognised, 'honesty is the best policy'.

Tabloid nonsense saying they are casting etc distorts the picture but official Eon quotes have been pretty consistent in saying nothing is currently in production.

Up to a point, I don't mind if the gaps are long. So long as the films become regular once the new era gets going. But I have my doubts
The problem is that it almost feels like Barbara and Michael G. have little interest in making Bond films post-Craig. If we're being honest, NTTD was finished in 2019; it's now 2024, and we're no closer to a new movie. I don't think we need a film every two years, but we are at another one of those critical points in the franchise again where it's time to ask if Bond is still relevant. Sure, it can continue, but should it? When you think about it, we've had one Bond film released in the last nine years. That is staggering. I think the way to save Bond is to hand creative control to a visionary director like Nolan. Nolan continues to produce films that are both critically successful and commercially successful. He also returned Batman to relevancy after Batman and Robin. I cannot help but feel that Wilson and Broccoli have too much creative control. I think that makes it difficult for any director to want to take on the project when there are so many constraints.
I think Bond has twenty years left in the gas tank before the series ends. Not because those in charge end it by choice, but due to Bond slowly becoming less relevant with younger generations. I’m in my 20s and I can honestly say most people my age or younger have never seen a Bond film. We grew up with Star Wars and Marvel; Bond has never been in the limelight like he once was. The longer they take to make new films the faster it’ll kill the franchise because younger generations have no desire to watch Bond

Personally, I think it's a good idea that the producers are taking their time to craft a good story and decide where they are going to take the character and the franchise. I don't want the Bond franchise to turn into Star Wars or the Marvel films where they just keep putting out half-ass content constantly to the point people just don't care anymore. I think quality should overcome quantity because the results will be worth the wait.

Here's an idea: What if the next bond movie was directed by Christopher McQuarrie? I think what he has accomplished in the recent installments of the Mission Impossible franchise were his subtle way of demonstrating that if someone gave him the chance, he would be more than happy to direct a bond film.
He seems very loyal to Tom Cruise though [being involved at least as a producer/writer in pretty much all his films since 2011].
@@jamesatkinsonja Just thought I'd throw it out there. I could not think of any other movie director who has had more dedication to spy and action movies than Chris McQuarrie. As far as I know, it's a pretty small pool to draw from.
One of the reasons Bond succeeded was the constant pivot between "types" of actors. Of the main four, in turns thuggish, comedic, suave, professional. And in that time Britain's place in the world has gone from last-gasp of empire, through American sugar-rush economy, to heading to destitution. At this stage it feels like Spectre/WEF has won. Perhaps this one should see a disavowed, dissident Bond slowly working his way through Parliament & the Civil Service whacking them in turns.
All I'll say is, I would rather these long gaps between films than forcing them out every two years for the sake of it. Bond films feel special to me, because we haven't been oversaturated with them over the years. For instance, theres a new Star Wars film coming in 2026, and I'm just not that bothered about it to be honest. It doesnt feel like a special event anymore, which is a pity.

Exactly. Obviously, gaps between films doesn't guarantee quality either, but at least there's the opportunity to put together a good script and cast. Also, given all the whining and complaining about "woke" Bond films, if I were EON, I wouldn't want to make one either right now. You can't have Bond acting like it's 1962 and hitting women all the time in 2024, but if you have him behave like someone would have to in order to survive in the 21st century, some of the audience is going to ruin the box office. Better to let this phase work itself out and then make a film.
Well to give a counter view growing up in the seventies/eighties an anticipation and excitement developed expecting the latest Bond film, kind of like Christmas and in recent years I can see interest in the general public waning, most young men in their 20's I know have little to no interest in Bond. Is good to keep something in the public eye.

I'm in the camp "A big gap is not a bad thing" because I like that the 007 movies feel like huge events. Especially because, hot take, the last time we had movies coming out back to back when they didn't have a source material to rely on, it was during the Brosnan years and I found his movies (with the exception of Goldeneye) a bit forgettable.
However, I can't deny that I'm getting tired of not having any news about Bond26. I sincerely hope they've at least started working on the script.
That said, once again, I'll take these huge gaps over them selling the rights to amazon. That would be the dead of the franchise in my opinion because they'd definitely ruin it to the ground like Disney did with Star Wars and those annual movies + spin off and tv shows.

The latest “grain of salt” rumor from The Telegraph says that EON are in the early stages of meeting with directors for Bond 26, with All Quiet On The Western Front’s director Edward Berger being the top name on their list..
In terms of rumors, this at least makes more sense than any Bond casting rumor, as you typically hire your director first - then your writers, then actors and so on..

I want Martin Campbell to direct Bond 26! Remember how he's awesome in Bond reboots, the first films for Pierce Brosnan (GoldenEye, 1995) and Daniel Craig (Casino Royale, 2006)!
On one hand, he may not have a third Bond masterpiece in him. Sometimes you hit that point of diminishing returns.

Othello shows they certainly aren't rushing into Bond 26. You'd think Amazon might be applying pressure but it didn't go well when Sony tried to speed things up. Eon works at the speed to Eon.
I remember they wanted Bond 24+25 shot back to back and the messy Mission Impossible 7+8 experience shows it would have been biting off more than they could chew if they had done that.
I got into Bond during the post Dalton gap... reading beautiful paperback versions of the books with a foreward by Anthony Burgess and watching old films on TV ...when the trailer for GoldenEye dropped it was earth shatteringly exciting

True for EON films but if you included NSNA Connery and Moore both have 7.
But if one really, REALLY wishes to stretch it and say The Rock was Connery's 8th Bond film, it'd be back to true with him having the most.

I actually think it is a good idea for there to be a longer than usual break between movies. Not only will there be a new actor but Bond himself will also be a reboot. There will be a lot for fans to digest so I think a break will help with the transition.
Bond is undergoing a "reinvention". This time I believe this is going to be a real reinvention for better or worse. Hopefully for better. They have a clean slate with Craig's Bond dying. Now Bond is like the Batman franchise with each new actor stepping into an alternate universe Bond with no continuation of what has gone before. It's possible, at least for the next guy anyway.
They already did it with Craig, so there's a precedent. Dalton to Brosnan's felt like a soft reboot. Connery, Lazenby Moore were all about the same age. The considerabley younger Dalton and younger Moneypenny seemed to set that.
The good part about no time to die, is that whoever they chose and whoever makes it, they have a completely clean slate. Personally I think they should just put some 40+ actor playing an
established Bond on a mission. Nothing fancy and no need to force some big arc or origin story. This actor could make just 1-2 Bonds with no connection to older movie but not a origin story either. Fiennes could return as M and Naomi Harris as Moneypenny but nothing else needs to be mentioned.
After this maybe a new origin story with a younger actor.
The key is to find other things to occupy your leisure time. You're spending time watching the kettle boil when there are new movie releases every week. Distract yourself from Bond or just rewatch the existing catalogue.
Random thoughts: (1) JB films usually follow movie trends (blaxploitation for LaLD, Star Wars for Moonraker, Bourne for Casino Royale, etc...) We are currently in a period when franchises are dying: superheroes, Star Wars, MI are less successful/anticipated/etc...
It is therefore more difficult to predict what will be the next big thing, and thus more difficult to find the right approach for the next Bond.
(2) Spin-offs, especially spin-offs involving other 00 agents, are an attractive idea. I've always wondered on what missions the other 00s are.
(3) I'd love to see a more faithful adaptation of Moonraker. It is one of the best JB novel and only had an "in name only" adaptation.
The current trend is a shared universe so the idea of other 00’s in films building up to a “big bad” and a reveal of the new 007 would be an interesting way to go

I grew up with Bond, read all the books as a teenager etc..the 1989-95 hiatus was monumental for me, I went from a 17 year old schoolboy Bond super fan to a married man with a kid with lost interest, it was a few years later before I got into The Brosnan era on dvd, which I really love, but the longer the Bond drought lasts fans will be lost
They've said it's going to be contemporary but.I really wish they'd go back to the 50s and make it a period piece. Have the gun barrel opening be set at the very end of WW2 with a young Bond (if I recall correctly, Bond lied about his age when he enlisted in the books} on some espionage mission behind enemy lines that could involve a SMERSH agent in some capacity.
The war ends, Bond is discharged and tries to go back to civilian life but what he saw and did during the war at such a young age has left him restless, unable to settle down and find peace. Tensions rise between East and West and in 1949, the Soviet Union tests it's first nuclear weapon and the Cold War that began 2 years earlier is now in full swing. Bond is then recruited by his old handler into a new initiative from MI6 known as the Double O programme.
Casino Royale showed the two required kills at the beginning of the movie but a reboot set in the 50s could make those kills the focus of the movie with the targets being linked to the larger plot (I haven't gotten that far yet but since I'm not writing the movie, it doesn't matter lol). SMERSH would be the initial adversary with SPECTRE being introduced gradually over the course of a few movies just like the Connery films did.
So, we need to do what we did in the 90s again...

I would be lying if I didn't admit my worry on the absolute state of the series right now. Limbo is not kind to lost souls.
But everybody needs a hobby, and if Bond has one, it's resurrection.
I see a lot of discourse online about how the Bond series should officially die just as the character did in _No Time to Die,_ or that there should be new cinematic tales of Bond set in the 50s and/or 60s. Not only do I find all these ideas as irritating as an unloved season, I also find them a direct defiance of what Bond has proved time and again for over 60 years.
James Bond is forever.
No matter what time, no matter what actor, director, or writer passes on, Bond will forever be relevant. As long as there is a need for a man of action, as long as there are new threats in the world, Bond will always be there. He survived the end of the Cold War, the death of his author, the turn of the millennium, and decades of changing social attitudes. To end or transform all that, would be to spit upon that entire legacy.
Despite a lack of tangible evidence or hope, I still believe the words we were given at the end of every film, including _No Time to Die:_
JAMES BOND WILL RETURN
And he will return because he must...
Absolutely! There's a lot of limited thinking going around about the franchise at the moment. Bond has constantly adapted. That's why it's survived. It's not that difficult to make it as a general audience pleaser. Loved your use of Bond references. 😁

The podcast 'James Bond and Friends' made a good point when they said Amazon aren't like Netflix throwing money at projects hoping it sticks [hence Citadel costing $300 million lead to big changes on the show for season 2 and there not rushing it] nor like Disney Plus/Paramount wanting loads of spin offs so it's probably not the owners to match people's expectations of getting more Bond content quickly [they seem fine with 'road to a million' at the mo]. There looking to expand the 'Rocky series but there taking there time on it [as only Creed 4 and a potential Drago spin off are in development and the later might not end up happening], clearly learning lesions from things like the DCU.

One difference between the Brosnan to Craig gap and now is that you had a constant stream of video games in that time. There was Everything or Nothing in early 2004, then Goldeneye: Rogue Agent later that year and From Russia with Love in 2005. That completely filled the gap between the movies. And that’s not even mentioning the PC port of Nightfire in 2003 and the Gameboy Advance ports of Nightfire and Everything or Nothing, all of which were quite different from their console counterparts.

While I do respect everyone's opinion, I must say that the whole "After No Time to Die the series should end" rather strange. Bond didn't end when Connery left, nor did it end when Ian Flemming or Cubby Broccoli passed away, so for it to just abruptly be done for good after 60 years of actively going out of its way to adapt and change in order to continue as a series would feel inappropriate I think.
Obviously the character was killed off in No Time to Die, which admittedly is a first and some would argue that alone justifies ending the series, but No Time to Die was a Craig film and the Craig films are quite overtly a seperate continuity from the Bond series started with Connery and last seen with Brosnan back in the early 2000s. No Time to Die is perfectly appropriate as a conclusive ending to Craig's Bond specifically (2006-2021), but for it to mark the definitive end of Bond period? I just don't understand the rationale behind that.
For a lot of stories, having a definitive end point is a good thing. Lord of the Rings ends with Return of the King, and that's a good thing- but Bond is different. Bond is, with the exception of the Craig era, a series defined by how standalone each story is by design, so unlike other series that demand a conclusion for the sake of dramatic satisfaction, Bond has the long-term benefit of the standalone structure protecting each entry from any potential dramatic cheapening that future installments run the risk of inflicting (just look at Star Wars or the MCU 😬). The lack of hard narrative continuity is exactly why Bond can, and I think should, continue for generations to come without devaluing what came before.

Bloody hell i became a bond fan at the wrong time. Got into bond around march 2019 and i thought it was a good time as no time to die was on the horizon and my dad said he'd take me to see it. Like every bond fan i suffered the delays but finally got what i waited for and unlike most bond fans i absolutely adore nttd. Honestly my favourite film ever. Now the only worthwhile developments have been with a mind to kill, the announcement of project 007 and the release of Goldeneye on Xbox. Hope there is some announcements soon just to get something
There won’t be any announcements in the near future. Bond 26 doesn’t even exist as a project. When or if Bond 26 does go in to development, it’s 3-4 years of work. Such a long way to go.
I think Craig should have gone after SPECTRE. This way we would have had another actor in the role. (hopefully) In 2027 i will be 50, will I even care about the franchise by then? I only really became a Fan after seeing Goldeneye in 1995 i think i have had a good run.
I think we probably would have had a big gap even if that had happened. I read the NTTD making of book recently and you really get an incite into how much Craig was involved behind the scenes and pushing the project forward so no wonder they didn't want to lose him [especially as he was very popular with general audiences] so it kicked the can of the current situation down the road a few years. If Craig was doing a 6th movie it probably would be in pre-production now.

Then Cubby Brocoli quickly appointing Dalton after Brosnan wasn't available. Ensuring the 2 year gaps continued.
If I recall they were pretty much about to start shooting when Brosnan had to pull out [given Dalton went straight from filming the now forgotten 'Brenda Star' to Daylights] so they were force to keep going. I do think having Dalton follow on so closely from Moore didn't help him gain an audience at the time as his take is so different [maybe like Craig+ Brosnan he would have benefited from a bit of a gap].

Good video Calvin. My first Bond was LALD when I was seven; so I’m of the generation that was used to the clockwork-like two-year gap between Bonds. We didn’t have to question it: they just turned up. So I’m quite chilled about this gap, compared to the unexpected tumbleweed that was 1989-1995; particularly because we’ve already had big chunks of time elapse between Craig movies (well, that and the parlous state of cinema today). That said, I would very much like Eon to get a bloomin’ move on…

I think living in the time of sequels and reboots, it's almost as though we've come to expect another movie to come out in a relatively short time period. I mean just think about the distance between the original trilogy of Star Wars and the prequels. Time does build anticipation and quite frankly it's these types of videos that satiate the Bond fix, because it's a celebration of the films and books. Great video and it reminds me of the milk chocolate/dark chocolate metaphor. I think we are due for some milk chocolate Bond in a few years with a big shake up of some sort and I'm all for it!

I'm older than you, Calvin, and I remember the long gap between Dalton and Brosnan. That was more frustrating in a way because the delay was due to legal / studio stuff that was out of the Broccolis' hands. But it was also easier to take because it was still a pre-internet time and we didn't have the constant news cycle that we have today. Our info was a lot more curated than it is now.
But yeah, like you, I wish the new film was farther along than it is right now.
Hope they will go back to being a little more fun and exciting. And please get that agent some gadgets ⌚️
This proves what I've suspected for a long time -- that Barbara Broccoli is more interested in chasing trends than making true Bond films. Her tenure saw the Brosnan era devolve into over the top special effects offerings, as per the norm starting in the mid to late 90s, leading into what she admitted was a transition to Craig that aimed to emulate the Bourne series, eventually becoming stories that could serve as vehicles for any protagonist, in the process losing what sets Bond, as a character, apart.
Now, seeing how there are no obvious trends that stand out, let alone dominate, in film today, I'm not surprised Broccoli is at a loss as to where to take the character. Thus, Wilson and Broccoli seem to care more about chasing trends (read chasing box office) than they do about the nuance and nature of the character.
The Bond films have been following trends since at least Live And Let Die. Moonraker was supposed to be made in 1968 to cash in on 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Space Race.

@@jamesatkinsonja Diamonds Are Forever even copies the trend of an earlier Bond film, Goldfinger. And a thinking that a Bond film had to be like American movies, even considering American stars like Burt Reynolds and Clint Eastwood, and casting one (John Gavin), before getting Connery back. The flip flop tone switches that the Bond series goes through shows how much they're influenced by trends and what they perceive to be the flavour of the time.
