i love this version of the Esee 4! The flat handled Esees allways reminded me of tactical knives more than bushcraft knives. This is what i think is the perfect E4! They have the E4HM wich has a different shape, that would be my bushcrafter!
Steel is 1095 not 1090 (whatever that is). Your sheath is molded plastic, not kydex. Rowen Manufacturing in Idaho does the heat treat and tempering. My Esse 4 has the longer rounded handle which is superb...no jimping...plus it rides in a leather sheath with the tip of the handle just equal to my belt. Perfect for me. You shouldn’t chop with that blade though. Nothing dulls a blade faster. Well, except for the occasional rock.
I have 2 Esse 4 knives, the clip point and the drop point and I much prefer the drop point. But I love them both, very rugged knives. And the lifetime warranty is very reassuring.
When I first got my Essee 4 I couldn't do anything with it. The blade wasn't a true flat grind, it was gently concave or slightly hollow ground, fat at the spine and fat at the cutting edge. While sharp it had about a 30 degree bevel on each side plus the spine was fat and rounded. Couldn't make feather sticks because of the fat edge and black sandpaper coating. Couldn't prep food for the same reason. Couldn't throw sparks off a ferro rod because the spine was rounded over. Did split wood just fine and could do some light chopping, that was about it. The problems with the blade were easy to identify and fix. I took the knife to my belt sander and ground the sides truly flat eliminating the sandpaper coating and the fat cutting edge at the same time. I then ground the spine flat, sharpening the spine's edges in the process. I reprofiled the bevel at 17 degrees each side. I now have a high performing EDC knife. Great for food prep, skinning/butchering, cleaning fish, makes beautiful firesticks, and now throws a shower of sparks off a ferro rod. The knife is the outdoor tool it should have been in the first place. By the way, love the plastic sheath, hate the metal clip. I made a thick leather belt loop for mine to replace the metal clip and now have the Essee 4 perfectly modified to meet my camping/survival/EDC needs. The knife is a joy to use now.
I personally prefer the ESEE 3 over the ESEE 4,I like the thinner blade stock,its better for most bushcraft tasks..I pair my S35VN ESEE 3 with my ESEE Junglas ,Estwing Hatchet or Estwing Camp Axe..I use my Junglas for chopping and occasional light batoning..I don’t do much batoning as it is rather abusive though I have occasionally split fairly small pieces of wood especially when it gets wet outside and I need to get some dry wood to start a fire..Though I would much rather use my hatchet or axe for splitting wood so if it’s wet,raining or supposed to rain,I leave my Junglas..if it’s nice a dry out,I love to bring my Junglas out,it’s an excellent chopper and is far better than my hatchet or axe for clearing a path and/or a campsite..plus I love how it attaches to the molle webbing on the side of my Camelbak Motherlode,it carries more comfortable than my hatchet & my axe
This is a great knife. If you think you need something bigger for processing wood, just drop a $25 Fiskars hatchet in your bag and you are ready for anything.
Nice vid. ESEE now makes their own 3D contoured handles that come with their knives if you choose it. Maybe time to replace what you have with a contoured model with no swedge!
@@woodlandsnorth Hmmm. Then they made an error on their packaging. A clip point blade has an actual "clipped out" area which ends directly at the point of the blade. (Think Ka-Bar Knives) A drop point, actually "drops" at the spine, however slight, until the spine meets the tip of the blade. To add to the confusion, if the drop point meets the blade at the half way point in blade width, then it would be a spear point.

Kydex is a line of thermoplastic acrylic-polyvinyl chloride. It is a molded plastic. Kydex is just a brand name. It's still a formed plastic
1090 steel is just very slightly lower specced 1095 steel, a steel with a 0.05% lower carbon concentration :)

Clip points are used for a whole different task. Most in the military prefer the clip point.

I agree. However after owning this knife for several years now I can say I truly love it. I don't think I'd trade it for anything right now

I have gotten into it as well. Havent done 1095 yet. I've done AEB-L, 01 tool and 420 stainless. Good stuff.

No bushcraft knife has a flat grind. Period! If it’s not a scandi or a Sabre it’s not a bushcraft knife.
