AWESOME! So glad this was posted. Our whole family quotes scenes of this movie all the time, This is in my top 5 movies of all time. Its the work of pure genius
When I was in the eighth grade I was called to the principle’s office where I found my dad who told me he was there to take me to my dentist appointment. I began to say that I didn’t have a dentist appointment before my dad cut me off. We left the school and walked across the street to the Orange Mall 6 Theaters to see Young Frankenstein and then he returned me to the remainder of the school day.
Gene was a cutup at Washington High School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He headlined the annual talent show, "Tonia Toppers" with a great skit about two Englishmen pouring tea. You just knew he was destined for something big. Gordy Schlicke
My Mom went to that High School with Gene (and the late Wisconsin Senator Herb Kohl) and she said Gene was popular and when walking down the halls, he would animatedly said “hi, hi, hi” to all the classmates. What a Milwaukee treasure. ❤
Gene Wilder was one of the last of true gentlemen in show business. Talented, funny and at heart a genuine good guy. If you want an English accent, think David Niven. Same thing - no pretenciousnes, just doing good job.
The Dr Frankenstein and Creature dance routine is my favorite. It warms my heart to think that Gene Wilder fought so hard for its inclusion. A very lovable performer.
7:36 - I love this story. This truly shows the passion of both Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks forward the art of theater, movies, and comedy, and what must have been unspoken deep, deep trust and respect by Mel Brooks toward Gene Wilder (probably cultivated by working with him in Blazing Saddles). Brooks knew that if Wilder truly showed that in his heart of hearts this was the right move, if Wilder passionately fought for it because it was the right thing to do, then any doubts he'd have would be extinguished and he'd put it in the movie. As Wilder said, Brooks believed that a script is built upon columns, and if after shaking those foundational columns the scene and concept still stands, then it must be in the movie. His test was to rattle those columns and test if this scene would stand, and it held firm, and this added scene ended up becoming one of the best scenes of the movie despite Brooks's initial unsureness. It's heartwarming, and shows the genius in both of them, particularly Mel Brooks.
Best movie ever. Gene Wilder a genius who does not get enough credit. The entire cast was brilliant and the movie is so quotable. The poo poo undies scene may be my favorite, but the scene with Gene Hackman is equally delightful. The movie’s impact is so strong that Christopher Moore used “Abby Normal” in 2010’s Bite Me-my favorite of his books. I interviewed him; he was a huge fan of the film.
What's amazing is how much of "Young Frankenstein" is almost verbatim from the original "Frankenstein". To follow up "Blazing Saddles" with "Young Frankenstein" is genius.
I’m so glad to have found this interview/show about this little movie my cousin took me to see in 1974 ( I was 14) after school on a Wednesday (I was in 7th grade) at 5 pm…I remember having so much fun watching this movie…I followed Gene Wilder until his death 😢… I loved him on everything he did…I really enjoyed his interviews and films to the max…I recall seeing StirCrazy in 1980 and loved him even more…I will always miss…”The Waco Kid “ RIP my friend 😢
Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley started writing this when she was 18 and finished it when she was 20. The book is scary to me but movie Young Frankenstein is the funniest I’ve ever seen. The right cast, the right director, the right producers all came together at the right time.
When i was in primary school in the 90s, I remember that one day, i pretend to be seek, and skip school, i remember that day was perfect, i watched in bed, Young Frankenstein 2 times, in the middle i watched Labyrinth from David Bowie... such a perfect day.... one of the most beloved films, thanks gene and mel and all the team that create this masterpiece! Big Hug from BsAs Argentina :)
Only a film like this can stay with millions of people throughout their lives, it has so many scenes of which people " Quote" to this day. That makes it a Classic film for all time. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🏴💙🏴💙😂💙🏴
Funny as heck every time I watch it. Perfection. Stellar cast. Plus a nod to the 1st two Franken-films. I was 16, breaking up with my girlfriend, who was there, with me never laughing the 1st time I watched. Since then I laugh my @ss off no matter how many times I've seen it. A comedic masterpiece. They are all so good in it, but Feldman & Kahn especially rock me.
I loved the great homage Peter Boyle played to the role when he was doing everybody loves Raymond and they did the Halloween show where he was again the monster.
Alan Ladd Junior was such a great guy that was responsible for green lighting many many classics. Including this masterpiece and the original Star wars.
I'M A LITTLE LATE TO THE PARTY WITH COMMENTING ON THIS VIDEO BUT THANK YOU FOR POSTING IT!! IT WAS A WONDERFUL, ENTERTAINING LOOK AT THE MAKING OF YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN FROM CONCEPT TO FINISHED PRODUCT!! ONE OF MY FAVORITE FILMS AND PROBABLY ONE OF THE FUNNIEST FILMS OF ALL TIME!! RIP GENE WILDER AND THE REST OF THAT CAST AND CREW THAT ARE NO LONGER WITH US!!
The lesson in movie making of Young Frankenstein is if you make a spoof, do not spoof out of spite, or make fun of films you hate. Do it out of love. Young Frankenstein is as much a work of devotion to the classic horror era as it is a pi## take.
This movie...this cast...this script...this screenplay...this lighting...this production...this musical score...this acting...? RIP Peter Boyle, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, and Gene Wilder...you are all in my memories as being part of one of the greatest comedies in the history of cinema. And to you Mel Brooks, at 96 years young? May you live long and enjoy your accomplishments! Halloween is coming soon and I'll be ready for my tradition of watching the original 'Frankenstein', 'The Bride of Frankenstein', 'The Son of Frankenstein, and finally 'Young Frankenstein' in the coming days ahead.
absolutely hilarious film with a stupendous cast and Gene Wilder = greatest American actor of all time for me and Gene loved Ronnie Barker who is probably my favourite English actor of all time !!
The epitome of great movies is just blind luck, serendipity. That these actors all came together, with gene and mel's genius, to make imo the greatest film ever.
There are only a very few collaborations in cinema as successful as Gene & Mel. They were on a totally different level in their comic genius with some of the most iconic moments in cinema - 'Putting on the Ritz' has no comparison, it's just hilarious
So great to watch this video and feel like you are on the Young Frankenstein set with Gine Wilder and the whole crew. And the budget of only 2.3 million tells me that more money properly makes todays Hollywood movies worse not better.
28:18 You may remember that in _To Be Or Not To Be_ the cast took curtain calls during end credits. Mel should adapt that one to stage. That film is an emotional roller coaster, even by Mel's standards.
Loved this parody /spoof of this beloved classic! Found out years later that Mary E Stonecraft who created Frankenstein was originally Titled " A Modern Prometheus ". I also read that she and her friends were sitting inside her house going around telling Ghost Stories to pass the timeI ; it was a dark and stormy day ! Whatever she did was the stuff of legend- movies and even cartoons ! The only thing that disappoints meknow is they never went further with a sequel ! Then again why mess with the original film. Still cracks me up with laughter !
Look more into it. That group of friends was a constant orgy. The sky has been messed up due to a volcano a few years before so everyone had to stay inside all the time. In between the sex romp they did the ghost story thing.
Both Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks admitted that they were scared of the Universal horror films when they were kids, which Mel Brooks suggested was the seeds to how their horror comedy film was sown.
at 16:35 if like me you're wondering what's been said as the close caption says "strict fan's garage" it's Kenneth Strickfaden's garage. Kenneth Strickfaden (May 23, 1896 - February 29, 1984) was an electrician, film set designer, and electrical special effects creator. Beginning with his effects on Frankenstein (1931) he became Hollywood's preeminent electrical special effects expert. He created the science fiction apparatus in more than 100 motion picture films and television programs, from the Frankenstein films to The Wizard of Oz and The Mask of Fu Manchu to television's The Munsters, and his final work, Young Frankenstein (1974). (wikipedia)
We went to see Jaws. It was sold out. My friend Aaron, a character, who is gone now having died of HIV complications said let's see Young Frankenstein., I've seen it it's funny. So glad Jaws was sold out. It may be my favorite movie of all time. What a cast. Never to be duplicated.
I see this for the first time-- a wonderful docu! It helps that I find Young Frankenstein the best comedy ever. It's perfect. It's legendary funny. I remember the first time I saw this film. We didn't know anything about it, and were expecting a remake of the original, but more polished. Five minutes into it, we were laughing out loud, along with the rest of the audience. I remember that my stomach actually hurt from laughing so hard by the end of it. It's a treasure of a film.
I don't usually have a favorite of anything, opting for several favorite things in a category, but I make an exception for this movie listing it as my favorite comedy film of all time. I have watched it so many times, that I can recite dialog, and it is still hilarious every time I watch it. My wife even bought me the companion back telling the background stories that go with it. My favorite story from the book is when Mel Brooks said he told the studio he was going to film in black and white and immediately walked out of the room only to be pursued down the hall by angry Jews. Black and white was the perfect way to film this, I am so glad they filmed it this way. 10:27 Schwanzstucker is a completely made-up word but the sound of it leaves no doubt what Inga is talking about. This sort of thing shows the brilliance of the writing. OMG, Teri Garr is beautiful and her cleavage is out of this world. I believe this is head and shoulders better than "Blazing Saddles."
you never really know somebody you don't live with. even then? but there's something about Gene Wilder that anytime I've heard him speak or interviewed he seems to be a genuinely sweet, kind and gentle man.
Frankly (no pun intended) I always thought the novel Frankenstein was and is the best of them all. The novel was alot scarier than any of the films were. It's interesting that Young Frankenstein actually had scenes where the characters quote actual lines from the novel. Abbott and Costello did a Frankenstein comedy but it wasn't a parody being the monster characters were played straight.
I will never forget my best friend in 10th grade saying "you gotta watch young Frankenstein! It's hilarious!" And I remember when it first started thinking "black and WHITE?! OH NO, this is gonna SUCK!" and about 30 minutes in I realized that you didn't even notice it! In fact, by the end of the film I had totally forgotten about the b & w. To this day it almost seems like it was in color in my memory and it was for sure the perfect way to make that movie. It HAD to be black and white, period. Love this movie and Mel and Gene and everything between :)
My favorite scene is with Cloris and Gene. She keeps asking him if he wants a drink before bedtime. "Brandy?" "Some varm milk perhaps?" "Ovaltine!?" So funny! I laugh every single time.
Lol I just watched a clip where Mel tells a totally different story of how the movie (actors plus himself) formed. I think Ill go with Genes version. Only bit they both had the same tho was that it was Genes idea.
Gene wilder said that he thought up "young Frankenstein " but it wasn't the first time that it was said, in the original movie, they said it. "Young Frankenstein "
AWESOME! So glad this was posted. Our whole family quotes scenes of this movie all the time, This is in my top 5 movies of all time. Its the work of pure genius
Glad you enjoyed it!
It is the work of genius, I do agree.
😂😅
When I was in the eighth grade I was called to the principle’s office where I found my dad who told me he was there to take me to my dentist appointment. I began to say that I didn’t have a dentist appointment before my dad cut me off. We left the school and walked across the street to the Orange Mall 6 Theaters to see Young Frankenstein and then he returned me to the remainder of the school day.
Brilliant! If your Dad tried that today he'd be arrested 😅
So cool! What a nice gift. Thanks for sharing, J.
Your dad sounds awesome.
Ther´s a pather that understood what real education is.
I wish I could give back even a fraction of the joy Brooks and Wilder have given me.
I love Gene's smile.
We miss him.

What a wonderful interview! Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks are a perfect match for these movies. The whole cast was awesome!
When Blazing Saddles came out on VHS we took magic mushrooms and nearly died screaming in maniacal helpless laughter😂😂😂. This is a close 2nd.
Those were the days…😉
crazy to think the movie was only 20 years old at the time of this interview. Now it's nearly 50!
This movie is timeless.
Long Live the Spirit of Gene Wilder!
One of the greatest spoof comedies of all time. Greatness.
A supremely touching retelling how YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN came to be. AN AMAZING RECOUNT. SUCH A FUNNY FUNNY CLASSIC MOVIE!
Thank God for Gene, Mel, and all involved in this Classic, I can't stop laughing even as I'm writing this.
The Dr Frankenstein and Creature dance routine is my favorite. It warms my heart to think that Gene Wilder fought so hard for its inclusion. A very lovable performer.
Same here. Crazy to think that Mel Brooks wasn’t sure about it. Puttin on the Riiiiiiiitz😂

that scene with the monster & blind hermit for me is the funniest laugh-out-loud scene ive ever experienced in cinema
I was just thinking of that scene when I read your comment 😂!

There really is no bad character in the whole movie! All Aces
I thought Terry Gar was surprisingly good
Terri Garr in that movie. TOTAL. SMOKE. SHOW.
Hottest she’s ever looked on film. It was in black and white which makes that even more impressive.
Such a monumental movie, greatly admired and enjoyed almost worldwide ... Still quoted or referred to in the Netherlands.
Everybody in this movie was equally good, even if their part was very small. A classic built on a classic movie and book.
Yo...true stars shine in the dark of "the world"...may we all be as bold...
Love, love, love, this movie & every person in it!🎉💕💕🎉🎉
I haven't realized Gene Hackman was in there. I have watched it at lest ten times.
He plays the blind man
I have lost track of how many times I have seen the movie, and I never realized it was Hackman. Time to watch it again... 😎
Funny as heck every time I watch it. Perfection. Stellar cast. Plus a nod to the 1st two Franken-films. it really dont get any better than this movie i watch it every time i can when i can pure genius all the way round
I saw this classic film on VHS in the 80s. 40 years later and it’s still my favourite comedy. I know it off by heart but it’s still hilarious.
No kidding Teri Garr is the sexiest actress in cinematic history just for that 1 role, so gorgeous yet really endearing and adorable

"You take the blonde, I'll take the one in the toibin," is pure Marx Brothers! Bet you a dollar Mr. Feldman knew that! :)))
It’s one of the funniest lines in the movie 🍻
No kidding 🙄
It’s Groucho Marx, 1930’s teen heartthrob and 1950’s game show host!
And he did it in a voice indistinguishable from Groucho’s!
So is "walk this way." Groucho Marx.
Thank you Mr Wilder. I’ve loved from childhood to adulthood. There will never be another …
absolutely hilarious film with a stupendous cast and Gene Wilder = greatest American actor of all time for me and Gene loved Ronnie Barker who is probably my favourite English actor of all time !!
The funniest movie ever made. Cast was perfect. Wish they would have made a sequel
The sequel could mabey be a parody on Frankenstein Meets Wolfman?
Releasing this film around Christmas is the cherry on top!
like all mel brooks movies i assumed Young Frankenstein was mel's idea. i never knew it was Gene's baby. thank you for this Gene and all you gave us.

I saw this when my almost 50 yr old son was an infant. One of the last good times I had with my X.
The movie is even better than they give it credit for, a genuinely funny, funny movie.
So great to watch this video and feel like you are on the Young Frankenstein set with Gine Wilder and the whole crew. And the budget of only 2.3 million tells me that more money properly makes todays Hollywood movies worse not better.
20th Century Fox gave them a budget of 3 million.
One of the funniest movies of all time. Seen it 50 times since the early 80s and I can’t stop laughing from the moment the thing begins.
28:18 You may remember that in _To Be Or Not To Be_ the cast took curtain calls during end credits.
Mel should adapt that one to stage. That film is an emotional roller coaster, even by Mel's standards.

Absolutely brilliant 👏 👌
What an incredible cast! It's amazing that any film was made at all, considering how funny all these individuals were.
Both Gene Wilder and Mel Brooks admitted that they were scared of the Universal horror films when they were kids, which Mel Brooks suggested was the seeds to how their horror comedy film was sown.
For sure about Gene Hackman! He was great!!
One of my favorite movies 💜💜💜💜💜
at 16:35 if like me you're wondering what's been said as the close caption says "strict fan's garage" it's Kenneth Strickfaden's garage.

One best movie ever!
And I love this behind the scenes talks!!!
"Aby...Aby normal."
Final budget: $ 2,800,000
Final Box office: $86,200,000
*Profit: $83,400,000*
Columbia, YOU GET NOTHING!!!!
I see this for the first time-- a wonderful docu! It helps that I find Young Frankenstein the best comedy ever. It's perfect. It's legendary funny. The cast was miraculous, settings and lightning amazing, and the filmscore one of the best that was composed up till that moment; the opening theme swoops you into the film, it's dark, gothic, dramatic. That tragic violin solo also hits the right note.
It's a delight to see the takes where the actors can't hold their laughs! I usually find Bloopers tedious and boring, but not here (and Carol Burnett bloopers are legendary too, btw)
There's absolutely nothing negative to say about Young Frankenstein. Mel Brooks' best film. Top amusement. One of the movies that will never get outdated.
I had the biggest crush since I was 12 in the 70s. Loved the hair, oversized eyes, and all.😁
UNA JOYA DEL CINE, GRACIAS POR SIEMPRE A GENE Y MEL!!
I would have loved to have heard the argument between Mel and Gene over the musical number.
In my top 10! Number 1 of favorite comedies. Actually, tied with Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I too, can quote it. A masterpiece.
Ce film est génial. Merci à tous ceux qui y ont participé. ❤️

Wow I didnt know or dont remember that it was Gene Hackman who played the blind man. Genuinely surprised by that.
you never really know somebody you don't live with. even then? but there's something about Gene Wilder that anytime I've heard him speak or interviewed he seems to be a genuinely sweet, kind and gentle man.

If there was a heaven, I'd wish Gene & Gilda their rightful place. xx
My favourite movie ❤️❤️❤️❤️
I wish they would put this on Tubi or Pluto TV love to see again ❤
A,classic! Makes, you 😊 GLAD, to.be alive!
Brooks/Wilder enough said.
Gene & Gilda. Couple Goals x 100! ❤
Pure genius with all who were involved. Fabulous ❤
"A blind man and a mute..... an incredibly BIG mute." 😂😂😂

Love Mel and Gene and all the cast of this movie.
A good documentary, definitely without any footage!!!
A little late, but always good to recognize genius.
Good questions here. I wish there were more interviews with Peter
Best Comedy Ever‼️
You know that movie Young Frankenstein? Scared the hell out of me.
“How about I play Police Chief Wiggum and you play Carl Reiner? I HATE Carl Reiner!!!”
I’ve always felt Life of Brian and Young Frankenstein are the 2 best comedy films ever made.
When the planets align, this is the result, one-hundred percent! 👍
Lol I just watched a clip where Mel tells a totally different story of how the movie (actors plus himself) formed. I think Ill go with Genes version. Only bit they both had the same tho was that it was Genes idea.
