It was a little flimsier than I expected. I had to add a 2x2 piece of wood to the bottom on the rear side in order to stabilize it better th-cam.com/users/postUgkxXTh-lz-8W6GcB219vTLp27-MxbZYObBX . It is also starting to bow a little at the outer wall ( I've had it up for about 6 months), I've already had a shelf tumble down because of the bow and the fact that the little shelf brackets are quite short. I went out to home depot and got some longer ones so that the shelves don't tumble down again. Overall, it looks very nice for the price and it holds a lot ( I use it as a pantry). I am very satisfied with my purchase. I just strongly suggest reinforcing it before putting it up.
I too love Woodinville. One of my faves. In fact, I have zero proof dispelling my belief that the two bottles I still have left of Woodinville didn't come from that very barrel. Awesome video!
The screws in the discription. Were they what you used on the bands. Also what use was the nails. I have used dry wall screws in the past but yours looks much better.

The materials list is for 2 half cabinets. The backing and shelf are separate. The powercord is unsecured, but the double backing tape on the lights helps keep it from moving around. I updated the BOM to include the shelf wood

Thank you! I pre drilled both the ring and the wood. Use a piece of tape on the drill bit so you don’t go too far into the wood. I hope your project turns out great!

At that moment, I was referring to the peices of wood that make up the heads (ends/caps) of the barrel, but in hind sight, I would glue every seam where two pieces of wood come together, especially the area that will eventually become the door.

Can't help but feel like alot of space is wasted with a flat backside in the middle of the barrel. Maybe create a round shelf with the middle cut out to display your bottles around the inside. Creating, still, a hollow shelf feel to it. Then hang a nice display bulb from the top in the middle. Cheers 🥃

I screwed them into place. Just make sure the screws aren’t too long or they will stick through to the other side. If you are doing a full barrel you can put them on the door and around the door opening. Everything else will stay in place on its own. Half barrel you need to do them all or it will fall apart.

I am very happy with how it turned out, but the door….that damn door just would not retain its shape. I tried to use a tie strap across the center of the door to pull it in tighter but it didn’t help. Any ideas? I can always take the door off and try something else. Thanks!
the door is definitely the hardest part. try using 2-4 straps. one on top, one on bottom. secure the ends of the straps first, leaving about 1/4 inch of space between the strap and stave at the middle, then use 2 or 3 screws evenly spaced apart and slowly tighten them until the door as its desired shape. you could also use 2 more straps in an X pattern and the same method as above if you have warping issues

I think for that there are 2 ways- 1) get a small stick of scrap wood, and cut it down to size until it fits while spinning it in the barrel 180 degrees (like a helicopter). once it doesnt rub the edges, you know what size. 2) Math- measure the circumference of the barrel at shelf height, divide by pi (3.14) to get the outer diameter (OD), measure the thickness of a stave, multiply it by 2, and subtract from the OD and you get the inner diameter. take off 1/4 inch for error and you should have the size circle you need for the shelf. which way did it flatten out? I am not sure the best way to describe it but ill give it a shot: if the staves themselves flattened, I am not sure how to fix it, but if it flattened out like there is space in between each stave, try tightening the braces on the back side of the door to force it to be more rounded. does that make sense? if you need further help, email me at KHPiercePower@gmail.com and I will send you some close up pictures of the door to see if that will help

Thank you! these are the screws I used: bit.ly/3bmAorR. They are not self tapping, so you need to drill out each hole first. If you make a whole barrel cabinet, you dont need to put the screws in every stave (wood piece), you would only want to have them in the bands at the border of the door. Unfortunately the screws are required to hold it all together, otherwise it would just fall apart.
I used the short edge of a 6 inch 2x2 as a scraper. I would recommend spraying it with a matte clear unless you want black fingers every time you touch it.
Great video, Kevin. I've had a whiskey barrel for a few years waiting for me to make a cabinet. Plan to put a glass top on as well. My only issue is the wood staves have dried quite a bit, so some have actually pulled back from the hoops. I'm looking at using button head cap screws (with inside nuts) to pull them together, but that could take forever on the whole barrel. Any other thoughts? Thanks!
Hello from Scotland... I've done exactly what you're describing, but it was for cosmetic reasons only rather than to pull the barrel back as it was. It does look great in the end (as close to the original rivets as possible) but it's a long and tedious job. If I remember right, I drilled straight through the band into each stave using a M6 bit. Looking from inside the barrel, there would then be a visible hole that would be used as the centre for the next step, which was to take 12mm spade bit - just enough to fit a small socket holding the nut so that when you send the bolt in from the outside, you can get it as tight as possible.... Repeat x100 and your barrel will outlive the planet lol. Feel free to send me a private message for a couple of photos 👍

Hey! I just opened up my barrel and got the same thing as you (The shard) and the burbon smell. Since you did not record the scraping, how did you do? Since there is still some black left, does it still smell alot or the smell disappear totaly after scraping it a bit?
I scraped it with a crowbar. the smell did dissipate but there was still char left, so I sprayed a little bit of black spraypaint to seal it when I made the second half.
The discs that I have came with the grinder, I image and cutoff disc made for metal will work. just be sure to file the edges of the bands after cutting them.

Question: how long have you had these unique barrell cabinetsand more important does the wood strap really help hold the curve of the door? Im struggleing with what hardware to use to keep the staves curved

That is a great looking cabinet but honestly you destroyed the barrel itself and I think you could have used just regular white oak to make a a cabinet very similar. It wouldn't be authentic but after what you did to that it's not authentic anyways

Adding a mirror to the back panel, gives depth and brightens. I like the led kit and magnetic door holder.

The screws were what were used the secure the bands to the staves. The nails were used to secure the back plywood to the barrel.

Make a template from cardboard, just keep trimming it until it fits and then make it from wood.

Did you sand over the Woodinville stamp on the top? How do you preserve that stamp if you need to clean that area up?
I sanded lightly over it so it just smoothed it out and not damage the stamp

I cut the rings right where there is a seam between 2 staves, that way the wood also didn’t need to be cut

What is the tool used for making the curve for the shelf inside? Is it a type of ruler specific for making curves?
A string, nail and pencil. Tie them together to make a pendulum of sorts, let’s you draw a perfect circle.

How did you find the center of the barrel and lid

the brads are used to fasten the plywood backing to the barrel
What did you use to insert the additional brads into the rings? You kinda flew past that part
I used a drill to install the screws that hold the rings to the staves after I had drilled all the holes

I am building a whiskey barrel cabinet right now and I used a wire cup brush for a cordless drill and it made extremely fast work of the black char.
Is there a way to remove the smell faster than venting it out by leaving the door open?
Maybe try pressure washing the inside and let it dry before making it ?

What size wood did you use for the shelf?
I think it was 12 inch pine. you only need 2 or 3 linear feet.
