My son and I are new to this and although we are not quite ready to delve into this just yet, this video was really helpful.

Great vid, nice pacing to it. Just had a blown gasket on the drivers side on my 1990 ranger 5spd. This helps.

ErraticPneumatic glad its useful. i had to do the other side the next week! So I suggest doing both. The real lay evil parts are the exhaust bolts, and the head bolts are really hard to torque. The one piece of advice I really have though is use a very "solid" flat topped torx bit, my first one was rounded at the top and sheered off. i ended up having to replace half the exhaust bolts and lost 3 hours to the striped ones

My 1999 3.0 ranger cylinder 4 was dead because of a bent valve but new head later it runs great

    Great video, thank you.
I've recently got my rebuilt 2.8i (1983 Capri) back but have leaky rocker covers, due to many tappet adjustments I imagine..
I believe this is similar and was looking for a for a fix.. could you tell me whats the name of the gaskets please?
Also I've heard it's good to re-torque the heads when the engine is warm.. can you tell me, is this true?
    Thank you.

Fel-pro no leaks I think. Its been a while

Cork gaskets leak too readily and quick, primary on the back of the head, just around the corner on both sides. Must get warmer there than the rest of the head.

I have an exactly same engine like yours and I have a white smoke problem I did a lot of thinks to fix it even used some head gasket seal products but nothing works. I notice there the same cylinder what you show is burn and the spark plug comes out with some kind of fluid I don't know what exactly is it. I appreciate all kind of help you can give me because I love my truck and I don't want to send it to any junkyard. Thanks.

Hev Vape its probably toast. The 2.9 never was very great. I dont suggest dumping money into it. These are kinda "project" trucks now. I even got rid of mine.

Paul L thanks for your answer. So the best advice can you give me is to forget this truck and get a better one on the market?

You can get die to check for cracks in the head from a machinist. I've got that on a 2.9 I'm about to crack open...just leaking antifreeze on the side of the head luckily.
Did you replace the valve stem seals? That can be a source of smoke especially on startup. If it's constant something is burning that hadn't aught to be...oil or water one & you just have to find it (sounds easier than it is). Good luck, I too love my old "beaters". They might make funny noises/smells/smoke...but they're easy to work on, start & get me point a to b reliably. :)

My 2.9. has a slight misfire and when it warms up it only misfires low Rpm & started overheating lately it'll spike then drop , spike again , like the thermostat opening fast

What vehicle and mileage did you do this in? My 86 bronco ii has that engine and seems to have the overheating issue and I was thinking about trying to replace heads. How's she running now?

Justin Gero a 91 ranger same engine as yours the 2.9 I haven't had any issue with it related to this, its still pretty fresh; I'm pulling 20lbs of vacuum after 3k miles with no valve issues
