"Al-Hadath Al-Hamra," one of Al-Mutanabbi's famous poems, explores the heroics of Sayf al-Dawla and delves into deep psychological aspects of humans, animals, even inanimate objects. The poem reflects the poet's dedication and passion for his work, showcasing a harmony of elements in conflict, emotion, and art.
Al-Tha'alibi stated that Sayf al-Dawla was very impressed with the poem "Al-Hadath" and mentioned that it deserves attention. He explained that Sayf al-Dawla marched to the frontier of Al-Hadath to rebuild it after it was burned down by the Byzantine commander Bardas Phokas in the year 337 AH. Sayf al-Dawla entered the city suddenly on the 17th of Jumada al-Akhirah in the year 343 AH and built its fortresses.
The reaction of the Byzantines was swift, with Bardas Phokas and his son Nikephoros appearing along with a group of leading commanders. After two days, fifty thousand cavalry and infantry from the Bulgars, Khazars, Slavs, Rus, and Armenians surrounded the city. The two sides clashed at the end of Jumada al-Akhirah, and Sayf al-Dawla's army initially wavered but then held firm.
Sayf al-Dawla remained until he built the fortress of Al-Hadath on the 13th of Rajab, and Al-Mutanabbi recited his poem to him. Al-Mutanabbi's poetry combines wisdom and praise, expressing rich Arabic emotions. Byzantine historians praised Sayf al-Dawla, with some calling him "the Hamdanid infidel," "the harsh prince," and "the great Sayf al-Dawla." Al-Suyufi, in his book, described him as "the Hamdanid era" or "the era of Arab pride."
The English Lyrics:
Upon the mighty comes great resolve to bear,
And noble deeds by noble hearts declared.
What seems immense to those of feeble sight,
To the grand souls, even great trials are light.
Sayf al-Dawla instills his troops to rise,
While valliant armries falter to bring them their demise
And he asks from himself what he seeks from others ,
A prowess even lions cannot compare.
His weapons nourish the oldest of bird of prey,
Eagles (Vultures) of the world young and old in fierce array.
What harm would come to them if without talons they were made,
When his swords and spears are in battle firmly raised.
Does the Red Hadath (The Hadath Fortress ) know its bloody shade?
Or which cup poured forth the clouds, or bones it bade?
Before his descent, torrent of rain, stormed the place,
And once he closed in, skulls watered its embrace.
He built it tall, as spears clashed in the night,
With waves of death encircling in fright.
He was madness reigning, now corpses cast their spell,
And from the slain, strange charms arose to dwell.
Time’s prey, you turned her into religion,
With sharp-edged steel, despite the time itself.
Nights claim all they take
But they're for what they take from you in dept (taxed).
Whenever your intent was still conjugated in future
It was past before upon it negation was cast
How can Rome and Rus think to tear her down,
When spears and swords found her solid crown?
They judged her in war, where death held the gavel,
No innocent slain, no unjust prevailed.
To you they came, dragged Iron of dread,
As if on steeds with no legs they fled.
When they gleamed, no sword knew the steel from gown,
By God, the time’s fire melted deceit,
Leaving only swords and fierce men on feet.
Cut was that which shields and spears cannot pierce,
Fled from heroes, in fear, whom who does not beat.
By God, the time’s fire melted deceit,
Leaving only swords and fierce men on feet.
Was cut that which shields and spears cannot pierce,
Fled from heroes, in fear, whom who does not beat.
You stood, death certain for those who face,
As if you stood in death's slumbering eyes, in grace.
Heroes passed you, wounded, in defeat,
Your face still bright, your smile, elite.
Surpassing courage, wisdom, and the known,
As if you glimpsed the future, fully shown.
You clasped their wings upon the heart so tight (their military formation),
Where lesser and greater meet in plight.
Striking heads when victory seemed away,
And reached their throats as triumph paved the way.
You scorned the spears, till cast aside in jest,
As if the sword itself mocked them at best.
Who seeks grand conquest finds the key,
In swift, sharp blades, where valor is free.
