      I doubt the dev team wanted to spend another 12 hours on a model and they were pretty new to the technology at the time. I guess they were content with how Mario looked so they just went for that model as well.

      From what I understand, the buffer for models is too small. Hence - why things need to be pieced together. He stated that he edited the model, he didn't create a new one. He simply told the positions of the vertices from the arms and legs to connect to each other in the middle.

    • @metroid031993
      @metroid031993 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      To me, it looks like what he points out in the hex editor is a display list. Essentially, it's the graphics commands the CPU sends to the GPU, it deals with a bunch of stuff, like texturing, lighting, and of course vertices for models. Seems like what he did was edit the display lists directly to make the model look how he wanted

    This not only reduces vertex calculations, it also reduces overdraw. Sadly, Nintendo used this kind of modeling throughout their N64 games and that includes the LOZ games which I believe targeted just 20 fps.
    I remember someone who developed games for the N64 said that it didn't seem like N64 games were geometry limited so much as they were fill-rate limited so reducing overdraw would do a lotlot to increase performance. That same guy was behind the Z-sort microcode which got rid of the z-buffer altogether and allowed for much higher polygon counts.
    Even then, there was another optimization that a lot of games could have used to make better use of fill-rate without getting rid of the z-buffer and that's using a reverse-painters algorithm. I looked at the draw order of a few N64 games and it seemed to draw things back to front for the most part so pretty much every time a triangle was drawn, it read the old Z-buffer, value then wrote over it and the color buffer values with the new values. By just drawing from front to back it could have got rid of a lot of those color and z-buffer writes.

      The segmented model looks better for me because it makes Mario’s arms and legs less noodley and thin, like he is a pudgy man but has some stronger/more muscular limbs so the less polygons gave Mario more muscular shape and definition, like Nintendo saw this themselves years ago making the game and decided to go the segmented route regardless because of this.

    When I first played super Mario 64 I thought he looked really weird, but now he holds a special place in my memories...

    It's kind of funny... I was never a fan of the capped polygons. But, like you said: with such a small buffer - you can only do so much. Hex editing is atrocious, especially when you don't know where things are or what they do. I think it's awesome that you went through the work, time, and effort of doing this. Most people either wouldn't care, or are too lazy to do such things. It's amazing what you've managed to do to this game - I love seeing the results. I assume that stitching Mario's arms and legs to the body would be tricky, because the polygons for the torso don't line up with the arms or legs. I'd imagine the head may be a bit easier to stick to the top of the body. But, this work is awesome. I would love to know if the other main characters like Bowser, Peach, and Yoshi can be stitched in some areas? Anyways, great job!

    Du bist ein Wundertäter! You are a miracle-worker! This is amazing stuff. I would love to see you do something to Mario Kart 64. I know they had to render the players and carts as 2D sprites so they could save polygons. Alle guten wünsche. All good wishes.

    Super Mario 64 is a never ending source of fun facts, and has a pretty dedicated community (from speedruns to leaking its source code, among other things.)
