- To be honest, we never really thought about our "competition". But this year, it's been keeping our CEO Josh Miller up at night.
In Episode 1 of "We Might Not Make It", Josh breaks down what a company need to win the Al "prize" and debates (with himself) which of our five main competitors has the best shot to beat us.

Every day I wake up and think "why am I not working at this company?"
I work here and I can totally relate to the fear and I’m not even in Josh Millers position. I can only imagine his fear. On the other hand, things worth while and fear comes hand in hand.
I will just keep applying and applying because even if they do fail they are asking the right questions. I miss corporate creativity where a company really tries to define what is next. What the browser company is doing is genuine and in the same vein of what started all this in the first place. They are listening to users (understanding the landscape) rather than trying to dupe them into ad clicks after their data had been fleeced. Apple is probably the most innovative out of the staid google / microsoft crowd but there was a reason I left their eco system a long time ago.

@hplahpla1 If you actually work at The Browser Company, please tell me you have plans for taking in interns soon.. I would love to intern at The Browser Company. I study at Stony Brook University which is like 2 hours away from your HQ
what a relatable sentiment
The radical transparency of The Browser Company is jarring, and it motivates me to do the same for my work
Where can we observe their radical transparency within the context of source code?
@@bszmand the plans to generate revenue?
@@bszmand their long-term approach to data-privacy?
No, no, no. By “radical transparency” they meant if The Browser Company doesn’t substantively address the concerns around their business model then it’s like the concerns don’t exist.
@@ap0ria Right on! While everyone else’s comments are fairly valid. Although I see later in this series, they plan to address their revenue plan
Been with Arc for over a year now as my only browser on Mac.
I don't use the browser because of AI, but I still continue to use the browser despite of AI.
I hope you guys won't ruin it with AI
Agreed, I could live without all the AI features in the browser. I'm a developer and hope to get more features related to my work. But AI is not something I need in my browser, especially when that means sharing all my browsing data with another company.
@@FoxArcade Spot on! I'm not against AI that collects data that stays on your machine, but once these tech companies have 1:01 "an intimate understand of who you are" stored in their servers, it is only a matter of time before they leverage this to gain profit at the expense of our privacy.
I have nothing against The Browser Company. I'm just hoping that they will listen to what their users really want: convenience without infringing upon privacy.
@@MediaRealist "Convenience without infringing upon privacy." this man just found the best mantra for any AI company.
I think the best implementations of AI are the ones no one notices. Just like CGI in films. You don't want to notice it, you just want the magic.
Agreed, it's kind of a bummer how little pushback there's been
The crash zooms are such a good fit for the content of this video. Super friendly, open, & really emphasizes the light tone. Whoever thought of that needs a raise.
I may be an outlier but I think the “too many tabs” problem is more important, appealing, and innovative than the focusing on “my computer/the internet should do stuff for me”.
I feel like we’re in a season of people geeking out about AI potential and it’s distracting companies from helping people. My hot take is that Apple lagging behind in this area is a competitive advantage in the long run.
isn't apple focusing more on making llms run locally
HUGE QUESTION: With all this data you need, will we have any data privacy left? Or do we just take your word that you won't do anything bad with it or sell it to Meta? 1:01
DO NOT TAKE ANYONE'S WORD FOR THAT. Seriously, no offense to anyone working at The Browser Company. I'm sure the vast majority of you have no intention of doing that but nobody does until the wrong person gets offered too much money. You need to be talking about data privacy yesterday.
Same thought here. Started using arc recently and love it so far / plan on using it long term bc of how fresh and useful it is but we’ve all been burned so much by “we care about you! [5 years later] Facebook and every data broker / govt on earth has all your data now whoops”
This is why I use privacy browsers with not as great user experience for half my browsing. Google and co don’t need to know everything about me
I think the idea they're suggesting is the web browser and AI tools would use it locally, but that doesn't mean that'll be what it looks like in practice in the long term
I was thinking the same thing as he mentioned data. Gotta address privacy.
you have a google account, why are you concerned about privacy when you already gave it away
The person picking the music for these is doing a stellar job 👌
The reason I believe The Browser Company is actually gonna make it is that pretty much every freaking update you guys have ever shipped was something I didn't know I needed.
Apple is so behind on LLMs thats they're gonna rely on Google's Gemini. Microsoft still can'y figure it out what they want to do with all those OpenAI juice. You have perfect timing for Arc
This is my favorite business advice podcast
"hey guys welcome back im josh" "and im josh"
I'm a software developer and I genuinely can not imagine my day to day work without Arc. it IS the best browser. Period. I sincerely hope the company is successful.
PS: Open a subscription based model and I'll be the first one to get it.
Thanks Josh, for laying out your thinking publicly, it helps new founders like me. I am sure the optimistic Josh will get the prize or large pie atleast.
I like to think my bullshit detector is on point, and I sense none of it with you guys. The transparency ya’ll have shown is unheard of today. I believe in Arc and TBC and I know I’m not the only one that feels this way. Rooting for you guys since day one and till the end! With love, may the force be with you ✨
I love getting Friday Arc updates! Remember in the early days of the iPhone and it was a blast to just browse the app store and see what new thing is out there to play with? I get that same excitement every Friday wondering what the next Arc update is going to be.
This vision and the internal battles Josh and the rest of the team have are what made me switch. It’s so refreshing to actually have open doors and see the people who make the company which makes your beloved product.
I’m so optimistic for the future because these guys are asking the right questions and keep asking them every day.
I’m also going to search for a job opening in the company cause damn I want to be a part of THAT team!
if Arc didn't end up working out, you can be a production company and make videos
sandwich video
At least for now I feel like people wanna stay in control of their things and handle them on their own and not let an AI do everything for them. AI should support me doing stuff and maybe organize things. I don't know what I was trying to say... but: YOU ARE AWESOME! For real, you changed the game and made everything so much better! Keep listening to the community and you'll make it! 💙
I completely agree. It's just more fun right now. Finally an age when people are "going for it" again. And y'all are probably my favorite company out there today. Not only is your product great, but your company, brand, style, transparency, and attribution to your team members is fantastic! You're focus on design, experience, and interface is what I've spent 15 years preaching with Crema. Keep going! I'm here for it!
Incredibly transparent. This is definitely the way to win hearts.
You gotta talk data privacy. That is an unspoken elephant in this video.
again - arc browser pushed me to switch from Windows to mac about a year ago. this just says how much I love it and how much I needed new browser that will fit my web-lifestyle. thanks for that!
It’s so important to have a leader with these two sides to them. This “Confident Humility” is a huge reason they’ll do big things. I want to work there so badly.
This household is now an Arc household, because, to quote that other company, "it just works."
"I didn't even think of Google" - Quote by the guy who builds his business upon Googles open source project.
Real LMAO, isnt chromium the skeleton of arc?
I just can't get enough of this little company. Your openness and honesty is so refreshing. And your take on the state of the internet in the Age of AI is so true. Whatever it takes to make this work is worth investing in!
But you're not building a startup, you're building a movement. You have us.
Arc is by far by favorite piece of software that I use every single day. AI is cool and all, but I love everything that Arc does without it. I get that that's not monetize-able at scale unless you charge for the service (and even then, there's a limited amount of people that will pay for a browser), but I don't think y'all have anything to worry about as far as the major players. The web is your space. People are getting sick of what Google offers. Between y'all and Kagi, I actually enjoy using the internet again. Please, please don't lose sight of the good you're doing for people that love the internet and have been here from the beginning.
i really hope yall make it, i love arc with all my heart
I can't wait for next season, after Arc wins the browser games, when we see them go up against the operating system behemoths
Windows: Incredibly well-established and widely used
MacOS: Part of the apple ecosystem, immersive and privacy-centric design
Linux: Customizable to the nth degree, and the only option for server execution
Ready... FIGHT!!
i just watched this video and now downloaded Arc, not only because I think I like you Josh, but also because I liked that outro song!
The timing of this video couldn't be better. Open Interpreter just dropped today and the way the launched via an open-source build-it-yourself devkit counters every point josh made in the last section. Interested to see how this pushes Arc to innovate (or integrate)
I'm slowly but surely turning on more Arc Max features because I'm realizing how genuinely useful they are for my daily browsing. You guys are crushing it. Can't wait to see where you go next!
I know it’s not on your horizon, but it’s hard to have Arc as my default browser without a proper iPhone and iPad version. I use Arc search as much as possible and Arc on my Mac probably 80% of the time, but without the continuity using it across all my devices it’s hard to fully commit.
I'd say the same thing. Somehow it feels like they're skipping over this? My preference would definitely be Arc synced across all devices, before bothering with any AI stuff.
As a founder I can totally relate to Josh!
Optimistic and Pessimistic side of Founder.
Really like the way you guys are building and putting up your content. It genuinely adds up in the long run. Looking forward to see the success of the ARC !
the color grading of videos are to dark for such a bright company ✨
i cant help but feel the browser company is throwing away a good thing to go after some big lofty idea. I don't believe in yalls vision, i just like arc as a web browser. not everything has to be revolutionary.
I'm so happy to get to try Arc at last, I wish you all the luck along your way
and who knows maybe you can share the future pedestal with the new startups
such a great video. Its amazing to know what the players. You're such a personal company. Using arc is wonderful because i know there are people who really care about this - these other (except maybe apple) don't care for the single person. You crate this feeling and thats amazing. I really never thought that i would watch videos about my browser ;)
True 🫶
I really hope you decide to go open source before some other startup offers similar functionality and beats you to it. I love Arc and the idea, but knowing exactly what a product is doing with this much data and access is non-negotiable.
All I see is The Browser Company losing why I liked it in the first place. I want LESS in my browser. I wanted the browser that cleaned the tabs for me. I don't want The AI Company. I want The Browser Company.
Exactly! I don't care shit about AI. As a matter of fact I don't even want it in my browser.
Problem is there's a huge chance that AI will revolutionize the way "browsing" happens and being just a "better interface/more efficient" browser doesn't seem to be TBC's goal (if ever). I think they aim to be/establish the new pattern of interacting with the internet, and apparently there's no way it happens without heavily involving AI.
@@fmaiabatista that's fine. They can try that, but I'm no longer with them on that train.
Ngl, I literally have been convincing most of my friends to download arc. I just wish that arc on windows gets its first alpha release soon, but I love arc for what it is not for it having ai.
I don't care if another company has better features. You have the best CEO. Also we need Max on the Windows version.
I'm in the team "cautiously optimistic" when it comes to AI. We've seen the negative impact of suggested content ("the algorithm"), or the push for "smart" appliances and the "internet of things" everywhere. People are already going back to chronological feeds, closed groups and dumb appliances.
I'm sure AI will open up some new ways of using technology, but I'm convinced tech is healthier when used as a tool. It'll be great to be able to tell an assistant to complete a simple task for us, but I believe that anything beyond that will be detrimental overall.
And that's when thinking only of the companies trying to solve actual problems. 99% of the AI stuff will be opportunistic garbage, as always. As if we needed an AI toothbrush.
You've got a lot of people who believe in your company! I'm proud to be one of them
I do hope you make it, your app is a big part of my day to day life and i recommend it to everyone i know
I use and love arc for what it is now, a great browser with a kick ass interface. But, sadly the browser company needs to expand and actually make money, so they can't just be a browser with a nice interface. None of these long terms goals or features excite me, I actually fear it will make the browser more clunkly and then I'll have to go back to a more lightweight browser down the line.
So - Microsoft is an enterprise services/software company. They sell a lot of software. Apple is a hardware company. They sell a lot of hardware. Google is an ad sales company. They sell a lot of ads. OpenAI is providing LLMs (and GPUs) to everyone else. They rent a lot of GPUs.
What does Arc sell, rent, or create that keeps you going past 2025? The browser is amazing. What's the business model?
J dilla. Now Anderson paak. Someone at arc has great taste 👌
So Arc will be just another data collecting hydra?
I though you wanted to be different? Make the account optional. Make all AI features a) optional and b) provide a way to use local LLMs. Offer a true "no data leaves this device" option.
If you don’t make it, then I hope that you’ll at least open source it
i really enjoy these videos. it truly has the feel of transparency, and while i can't verify it, it's nice to get that feeling from corporate comms
I hope you guys won't ruin it with AI
I am a David and I am here to help by browsing in Arc.
Your biggest enemy is forgetting what brought you where you are.
I live by three simple words every day I get out of bed "Never Give Up". I really hope ARC wins the prize and remember "Never Give Up".
5:07
Arc: Google Chrome with a skin
CEO: I don’t even think about Google
Sure, bro. You don’t even have your own engine. At least use Mozilla
arc's superhuman pmf survey should go thru the roof 😂
Watching this video after WWDC, that didn't age well.
I second optimistic Josh, stay bold! 🔥
First! This browser has been my daily driver and wow it's amazing. I love the betas too
The song they put in in the end confirms their good taste ❤😍
hey, do you have any idea of the song name ?
@@ASC20001 It's Anderson Paak with Kendrick Lamar (and Thundercat on the bass) : Tints! What a great song!
@@johnsausage wow thank you 🙏
This is really interesting. I'm having trouble connecting with the idea that I should want an ML model to have all that data about me and then make decisions for me. I mean sure all these big companies are doing that but why is that a good thing. You seem to have a relentlessly positive attitude about this and I guess I'm just not convinced that the product you are envisioning is one that would make most people's lives better. It feels both too abstract and too much like it has a potential to be abused by powerful people. I like the David v Goliath energy but I'm not going to feel like trying to sell my friends on a browser than I genuinely use because it has vertical tabs until I can explain what the benefit of it is. Is it the Star Trek ask a computer to do a thing and it does it experience? Because if so then it needs to be clearer what that is. It having all my data just sounds sinister.
Everyday i wake up and ask "why isn't Arc Browser on windows?"
What an optimistic take. Ever since I saw chat gpt I assumed that eventually some operating system will include an llm that interfaces with all your apps for you. Never even considered that it could be a browser. I mean to your operating system your browser is just another app. I'm not sure it will ever make sense to give your browser the permissions to be able to interface with apps anyway.
And I... can't... help.... falling in love, with, arc...
I miss the old videos that made it feel like we were actually seeing "behind the door stuff". The board meeting videos were so fun and actually made me feel like a part of tbc. these videos feel like my old best buy training videos on why I should be happy working there. I was already happy I got the job, show me the fun stuff. idk what this series is. feels like wasted production budget.
Apple aren't that far behind in terms of LLMs, unfortunately. They just presented an LLM that can beat GPT-4 Turbo sometimes with less than 5 billion paramaters! But I still believe in you guys!
I’m all in. It’s the best tool for manipulating the internet we have at the moment.
soon as arc hit windows and i got access ive been using it constantly yes ive had to use edge my normal go to just cause arc is missing features that i love but soon as arc gets those features and fix the current bugs i'll swap to arc full time on mobile and PC just cause i like it a lot
I'll just spam the comment anyways. WE WANT WINDOWS ARC
I also want Linux Arc.. but yeah windows would be good.. these things take time.
you can apply to join to the beta game
If Arc fails, your product will live forever and be crowdsourced. Please start charging for Arc Max, I’m a buyer and will remain an active subscriber forever. Just don’t make it too expensive. I’d pay like $70 paid up-front annually, etc. I never, ever, want to lose Arc as my browser. It’s the most important part of my daily internet. The only concern I’d have is I use separate log-in’s for work and personal, so I’d like a license situation. Let us pay you.
I hope you guys or someone makes an OS with Arc's sensibilities. I'd love to see a file manager that sorts files by extension or by project with spaces like in Arc. I've learned from this company that browsers don't have to suck and would love the same treatment of an OS.
Learned about arc and switched! I was hesitant for the first few minutes after I downloaded by I am here to stay
My answer to the question of what browser I use on a device(laptop) - Brave, Brave Beta, Chromium, Firefox, Firefox Developer edition, Chrome, Min, Librewolf, WaterFox on windows. And I am on linux, so you may wanna come to the other side someday.
The 3 points he lists at the beginning are huge red flags. Data that tracks and knows everything about you, permissions to use your apps and can buy things on your behalf and is everywhere? This is a surveillance dystopia. Just make a good browser, otherwise this is just an attempt to cash in on even more intimate data you collect on people. Honestly gross to do this and pretend you are some underdog company… people should know better than to fall for this
Looking forward to you better, I will keep you every update of the expectations! Come on!
Point zero is trust. The potential is real for a digital assistant that knows everything, but you can’t hand your life over to any company. It can only be built on top of open source self-hosted foundations.
true, in order to implement an immersive adaptive user experience, should focus on operating system or other platforms that can call service for u like a browser or a super app
Can't wait to try this on all my devices. ...ALL my devices.
You can't win without Android. Keep treating it like an afterthought and you are guaranteed a loss.
You know why Chrome is king? Cause it is everywhere. It's the DOOM of browsers. It's on practically every device, every screen, runs on friggin' anything.
you woke my alexa's up...
I will donate if that's what it takes.
That's an interesting-ass office. I love The Browser Company so much, yet as a programmer Arc just doesn't do it for me, despite me adoring its design.
btw whats your favorite browser for programmer needs?
It's so slooooow!
What could Arc improve on for you and your needs? Instead of saying ‘it doesn’t do it for me’, give some critical feedback! 😊 Maybe they’ll consider adding those things for you.
I downloaded Arc, transfered all my tabs, and then lost them all ... and the customer support was like Geico ... yeah you can get rid of all my open tabs and that's how you win
The only company i would love to work for
I am enjoying these.
What if the interface of the future is not the mouse and keyboard.
I'm afraid to switch to Arc and then a year later they start to fill it with popups promoting their Pro Features
At 1:55 I was afraid that was sponsored fragment by 8sleep
i love this😭💀
I love you all!!!!!
Bring arc notes back!
Arc browser scrolling is laggy compared to Safri
you look like alan from two and a half man. please dont take away arc from us🙏🏻
Waiting for arc os ❤
Sleepyhead!!! Dang, I haven't heard that in a while.
Oh no! I use Arc, but if someone asks me which browser I use, I would probably say Chrome just because of muscle memory. :0
if you guys need someone, finishing my masters in data science ;)
Little big planet music is great
where is good similar to mac ipad arc browser or at least arc search?
Two Questions: 1. What if one of your competitors want to acquire you because of your headstart?
2. What's stopping you from bringing in those "new companies" to your team with the $15 million you mentioned in EP 0?
archbooks.. when???
