  • Built from components from a pair of 1970's vintage International Harvester Cub Cadet garden tractors, this motor grader is completely functional and fun to operate. Both rear axles drive, the front has power steering, and the hydraulics operate off the charge pump on the forward axle's hydrostatic drive. Total weight is approximately 2000 lbs with fluid filled tires. Power is supplied by a Cub Cadet's original (rebuilt) Kohler K301 12 hp single cylinder air cooled engine.

When you want to stop and go back, be sure to gently taper out any pile on the blade. Just lift the bit about a 1/2 inch and continue on foreward till the berm is gone and the bit is airborne. This way when you have to cross it again, you won't have a high spot under the bit when the steer axle climbs your burm. Once you get those high spots built in, it takes twice as much work to get them back out. I run both direct lever type and the newer type "jet" controls(joystick) for Idaho DOT and several other heavy equip. types. That little grader is amazing and perfectly sized for your application. Keep up the good work.

Tell me why you'd want one of these over, say, a blade setup on a tractor or a skid steer. Somebody has been telling me that a box set up with a laser is better in every way. Surely you can't crown a road or cut a slope with a blade setup though

I was surprised to see it actually cutting and not just scraping the top. The attention to detail on your workmanship is nothing short of spectacular! I don't have time to read all the comments, but surly someone has already recommended you patent your design before the concept of a mini-grader is copied by a large manufacturer. Doing so and then selling your patent would have yourself sitting pretty nicely financially.
I thoroughly enjoyed watching this video. Good job!

Lol this is awesome. I've run many graders and always wanted a small one for my 1/4 mile gravel driveway. That sir would be perfect! On big graders the front chevron tires are run opposite way of back normally. I was always learned it helps keep the fronts from wanting to slide out.

Good looking machine! I saw one like it outside of Goldsboro North Carolina about 10’yrs ago. The owner had a track set up for lawn mower tractor pulling and made one of these to maintain the track surface. He said he couldn’t find one in the size he wanted so he built his own. It had all the hydraulic functions of a full size grader but cut down to scale. Powered by a 16hp k series Kohler left over from one of the pulling tractors.

I wish I could do as well.
I will offer one tip from a guy who spent most of his career in farming, logging and heavy construction. If you ever intend to use it in muddy, icy or snowy conditions you'll have better steerage and control if you swap the front tires side to side so that the tread chevrons run backwards.
Those tires are designed to be used on powered axles. They will skid when pushed in the normal typical tread direction. If you turn them around they will bite in.
